Boys ’ Basketball Program 2014-15 Season Preview
The motto for Sierra Canyon School’s 2014-15 Boys’ Basketball Team is “The Hard Way,” referring to how we practice, how we play, how we train, and how we work in the classroom. We begin the preseason nationally ranked in the Top 25 by several publications, including MaxPreps and USA Today. According to some insiders, we have the toughest schedule in the country, which I believe should prepare our team for league play in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section, and the State Tournament. Our non-league schedule is a mixture of prestigious tournaments and showcases as we face state, regional, and nationally ranked programs including Trinity Catholic (KY), Oak Hill (VA), Corona del Sol (AZ), Dematha (MD), and Fairfax (CA). We are honored to play in the City of Palms Classic (Fort Myers, FL), the MaxPreps Holiday Classic (Palm Springs, CA), the State Preview (Fairfax), and the Nike Extravaganza (Santa Ana, CA). We return four starters from last year’s 29-4 team including 5-foot-10 junior point guard, Devearl Ramsey, two time gold medalist for Team USA’s U-17 division. This year, Ramsey should become the fourth player in Sierra Canyon’s young history to surpass 1,000 total points. Remy Martin, a highly recruited 5-foot-11 sophomore transfer will share guard duties with Ramsey. Cody Riley, a 6-foot-8 sophomore was last year’s MaxPreps Freshman of the Year will partner with 6-foot-8 Ira Lee, a freshman All-American to anchor the post position. 6-foot-3 sophomore Adam Seiko, with his soft touch from the outside, will start at wing. This year’s bench gives us flexibility at every position. Terrance McBride, a 6-foot-2 sophomore and Captain Juwan Trotter, 5-foot-10 senior, are expected to see significant minutes at the guard position. The Feinberg brothers, 6-foot-3 freshman Michael, and 6-foot-4 senior Robbie are combo guard/forward and forward/post respectively, and provide valuable versatility. Rounding out our team are seniors Zach Pierre, Ben Messinger, Adin Goldenberg, and junior Kohl Hollinquest. Sophomores Chasen Pender and Miles Robbins, along with freshman Joseph Wallace are expected to split duties between the Varsity and JV teams. By the end of the season we hope to join the boys football team and the girls basketball team (back-to-back) by putting up a State Championship banner in our gym. I want to thank everyone for their support and we are looking forward to an exciting season and doing it the “Hard Way,” we wouldn’t have it any other way. Go Trailblazers! Ty Nichols, Head Coach During the 2013-14, Ty Nichols guided Sierra Canyon to an overall record of 294, with appearances in the prestigious California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Open Division Southern Section playoffs and the CIF State Division IV playoffs. He led the Trailblazers to their first Open Division Consolation Championship with victories over eventual CIF State Champion Bishop Montgomery, and Division III State Champion Chaminade High School. Under Coach Nichols’ careful guidance, the young Trailblazers squad recorded an undefeated record of 10-0 in the distinguished Alpha League. Early in the 2013-14 campaign, the Trailblazers began to receive national awareness with victories over state power house Bishop O’Dowd, and powerful Chino Hills. As a result of these wins, the Trailblazers broke into USA Today’s illustrious Top 25 High School Poll and were ranked #17 nationally for the first time in school history. Coach Nichols guided the team to twelve consecutive victories, a school record, before losing to eventual tournament champion Loyola in the prestigious Torrey Pines Tournament in San Diego. Nichols’ 29 wins set a new school record for most wins in a single season, and provided Sierra Canyon with its second league championship in school history. Nichols began his coaching career at the early age of 22 where he was selected to head the varsity program at Vista High School, San Diego, CA. Nichols simultaneously served as Vice-President of High Five America, one of the largest youth basketball programs in the country. Coach Nichols also ran the first ever Nike National Championships, featuring sixteen of the top Nike grass roots basketball programs from across the country. Nichols also directed the first ever Nike Top 150 Camp, a program for the best incoming freshman and sophomores nationwide. After his tenure in San Diego, Nichols left the high school ranks to become an assistant coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA from 1998-2002. During his time at Liberty, Nichols was able to help recruit classes ranked between 20th and 43rd by four major recruiting publications, making it the best-ranked recruiting class in school history and in the Big South Conference. This year, Coach Nichols’ third with Sierra Canyon, finds his young squad sitting in three different national polls, ranked in the Top 25, Top 10, and Top 5 respectively. For the first time in school history, Sierra Canyon is embarking on a national schedule with fourteen of their first fifteen games against highly regarded programs, including several nationally ranked Top 25 high school teams. “I am excited about the possibilities in front of us this season. Even though we are very young, as a program we believe that we are ready to experience the rigors of a national schedule. It is my hope that playing such a tough schedule will prepare us for the incredibly demanding and ultra-competitive California Southern Section and State Playoffs,” Nichols said.
Coach Nichols’ Profile Hometown: San Diego, CA
College: California State University, San Marcos Position played: Point Guard Years Coaching at Sierra Canyon: 3 Total Years Coaching: 21 Favorite part of coaching at Sierra Canyon: Being involved with an administration, staff and players who are committed to pursuing excellence. Greatest accomplishment from last year: Going undefeated in league 10-0; Winning Open Division Consolation Championship; Receiving the schools first top 25 national ranking; maintaing unity and brotherhood in the locker room throughout the season. Opportunity on which to build this coming year: This year we play the toughest schedule in the school’s history. This an opportunity to compete against the best the country has to offer. Expectation for this year: We expect to take “The Hard Way” - always. Goal in life: To be the best husband I can be to my wife, the best father I can be to my son, and to help the young men in my care become all that God has created them to be.

A Word from Jim Skrumbis,
19 miles from
Downtown Los Angeles
We have 1,000 students who reflect our global society and the diversity of greater Los Angeles. International students come to Sierra Canyon from five different countries, and our students graduate with an average SAT score of 1850. 98% of our graduates go on to a 4-year college or university. Student athletes understand that winning games will get them only so far in life. They spend 2 hours a day on the court in practice, and on average another 15 hours a week on homework. In today’s ever-changing global society, I know all of our students are well prepared for whatever they encounter as members of society. Our Athletic Program has won state titles in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) for Girls’ Basketball (2012 and 2013), Football (2011), and Girls’ Soccer (2011), and sectional titles in Football, Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ Basketball, and Girls’ Soccer. As this media guide goes to press, this year’s football team was heading into the CIF Southern Section playoffs. I hope you enjoy watching our teams play this season, and look forward to welcoming you to our 35-acre campus in the San Fernando Valley so you can see first hand the value of a Sierra Canyon education.
