STEELCASE COMPETITION NEXT UNIVERSITY FALL 2014 / / NORFOLK, VA This project was a Steelcase Competition where the each student was given the building structure to create an educational enviornment that encouraged classmate and faculty interaction. The concept I chose was "Bringing the Outdoors In." Research indicates that nature plays a vital role in human health and wellbeing and that exterior views to nature play a big part in making that possible. I designed a healthy environment that incorporates individualized and group based learning that excites students to be there, to focus, to relax, and to learn as a team. I accomplished my concept in four ways; I first minimized visual boundaries to create an open feel, I maximized natural daylight by lowering wall heights, creating glass walls, and installing a skylight above the atrium. Lastly, I incorperated live greenery and natural materials throughout the space. ** Individual Project ** Project selected for CIDA review exhibition. 3

HEALTHCARE DESIGN NORTHCREST COMMUNITY SPRING 2014 / / AMES, IA For this project we had to research the importance of healthcare design. Facilities such as Memory care, Skilled Nursing, and Assisted Living all have specific needs for their residents. Through this project, we gained a better understanding for ADA codes and specifications. We were also held responsible for supplying a set of construction documents. Our concept was "Coastal Relaxation". We chose this because when elders retire, many of them long to move south along the coast, but in many cases elders choose not to relocate due to nearby family and close relations with their community. Thus, we decided to bring the same atmosphere of the warm coast to them.

During our research, we learned that patient recovery time is accelerated when they are provided an outdoor view of nature. Psychologically, patients become more optimistic and enlightened with such views, verses when their view is to a neighboring building. Maximizing natural light is also a necessity in healthcare design. It helps elder's emotions as well as diminishing eyesight. SKILLED NURSING

Memory Care facilities need to be secure so that the safety of every resident is never compromised. We designed this wing to have a hallway that loops. Residents with dimensia may wonder and feel lost if they come to a dead end in a hallway. The colors we used throughout the facility are mainly light and refreshing to encourage and reflect natural daylight. We also used the colors blue and coral to help ignite memory.
This wing of the facility has its own kitchen and community dining area. There are safety locks on all kitchen appliances and drawers. Staff will be present in main area at all times. The memory care ammenities include; access to an eclosed courtyard, private rooms, an assisted bathing room, laundry room, entertainment areas, a reading nook, and indoor water feature.

MACKAY OFFICE REMODEL IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FALL 2014 / / AMES, IA Iowa State University Human Sciences Extension and Outreach (HSEO) office is located in 101 MacKay Hall on campus. The goals for this remodel were to provide shorter dividers, better usage of space, create plenty of storage, create better lighting, de-clutter, and provide eight work stations. Our concept for this project was "Simplicity". Simplicity is not about deprivation, but about creating space for living, to eliminate the unnecessary. We accomplished this by designing condensed workstations, a built-in storage unit on the southern wall, and maximizing natural day light by removing the tall cubicles. We also provided multiple workstations and collaboration areas so coworkers can now engage with one another on the next level.

RETAIL DESIGN ROBY DESIGNS FALL 2013 / / ROME, ITALY For this project we partnered with a fashion design student who showed us their clothing line. We took their line and designed a flagship store for their clothing located in Rome, Italy. Our goal was to create a unique and unexpected experience for all costumers. We achieved this through dramatic lighting, unique wall coverings, and whimsical display fixtures. Roby Designs’ customers are young males and females between 14-20 years, and can be described as wild, bold and confident. Roby Designs should create a memorable experience for the customers; one that is personal and unique from any other store.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN LUXURY HOME SPRING 2012 / / WAYZETA, MN The goal of the Gustafson's home was to reflect a contemporary style influenced by Chinese design. Sculptures, pieces of art, and furniture are just a few of many aspects that were heavily influenced. There is also a hierarchy of space between private and public areas. Entertainment spaces, as well as relaxing areas, were incorporated. Axiality and symmetry are apparent in the circulation of each room and unity is the overall result of each space. While designing the home we were also influenced by a few Feng Shui characteristics, such as relationship with nature and the colors used.

RESIDENTIAL REMODEL HAND DRAFTING FALL 2012 / / CENTRAL, IA SECTION CUT
Through the renovation and remodel of the Green residence I learned what it looks like to take what you have been given and make the best of it. Needing to suite the needs of the residents, I explored different layout possibilities. Through the realm of hand rendering, I produced demolition plans, floor plans, and perspectives.

PAINTING INSPIRED INTERIOR MODEL MAKING FALL 2012 / / AMES, IA Given the painting on the left, we were to create a sculpture that invoked a related emotion and movement. After choosing a site on Iowa State's Campus, we created a space that was inspired by both the painting and the sculpture. PAINTING BY HENRI MATISSE
In this project I learned how to analyze the elements and principles of design through a painting to influence my design for a space.

CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS STUDY MODEL MAKING FALL 2013 / / AMES, IA Using specified materials, I constructed a three-dimensional scale model of a “Western Platform” wood frame building. This model-making project taught me the basics of a building's structure and how each piece is significant in the construction of a building.
