This Spring I am graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. I have over a year of professional experience from architecture firms in New York City, Berkeley, California, and Columbus, Ohio. Originally driven by my passion for art as an adolescent, I chose to study architecture to pursue my creative interests. I have a passion for the environment and strong interest in practicing sustainable architecture. Through my collegiate career, I discovered my love for architecture not only lies in the artistic aspects, but the immense impact architecture can have on an individual, a community, and the world. The following are educational, personal, and professional works that I have completed over the last four years. -Sierra Goetz

row house Present Studio, Mid Semester, Spring 2018 Documents Produced using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and SketchUp Located in Covington, Kentucky, the Row House is designed to facilitate a professional rowing team. The building program consisted of an office space, boat storage, boat launch, row tank, training area, and an indoor and outdoor observation deck. Emphasis on mass to ground, water and air were a primary focus in the composition of the building’s massing. Rendering style was intended to illustrate these components in the design.

Inversion of mass to ground
Early work from the semester started with a concrete casted model that included the forms illustrated above. I began thinking of the form as a spatial and experiential condition. The component was later carried out in my final building proposal. Process exploration directly generated the inverse relationship between the building mass, the land, and the water, which is illustrated in the sectional drawing below.

Perspective on the Water, North Facing
Impactful and direct circulation through the spaces and to the Observation Deck was a main focus. Entry to the building site includes a descent from on top of the levy to below the water level. During one’s promenade from entry to destination, occupants move through forced perspective space while one is transitioned from below water level to high above the water level and into the air. This provides occupants and observers with optimal views in both entry and from the Observation Deck where there are optimal views down onto the water and out towards The Ohio River.

nest housing Present Studio, Mid Semester, Spring 2018 Documents Produced using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and SketchUp For the forth year capstone studio, our studio joined “Nest, a community redevelopment corporation in Northside, a neighborhood of Cincinnati. As a studio, we created the housing matrix on the left, which formulated a series of components and sets of attributes for our residential housing designs. The matrix on the left is divided into four quadrants. The cross-hairs of these provide the studio with assigned design attributes. Randomly pulling numbers, I was assigned #1 of 17 and was required to integrate these components into my design while maintaining baseline constraints of affordability, sustainability, and visitability.

The combination of diagramming programmatic relationships, and rating them based on how well these relationships met my matrix components, aided me in distilling four programmatic models to work with. These four illustrated all assigned matrix components. In need to distill just one model, I repeated the process of rating which of these models best displayed each constraint by diagramming out their successes and failures. The Component Diagram to the right illustrates this process.

The single parent component was judged on possible views from living, kitchen, and parent bedroom. Ability to have view outside from all these spaces in order to monitor a child as well as an approaching visitor was a necessity.
The infill and North facing component was judged on the viability and quality of East light.
The ventilation component was judged on the amount of areas where cross and stack ventilation could take place on the South and North cross-section.
The square footage and glazing ratio component was judged on the amount of square footage (assuming the smaller square footage the more affordable) and the opportunity for glazing on North and East.

relationship and massing while also acquiring the massing that provided the best condition to complete the matrix components. Upon reviewing the plan, sectional, and 3D relationships, I was able to distill the specific conditions that made the matrix components possible. By combining the two top models, I generated my final building proposal.

Glazing and square footage component was acquired by keeping the square footage at 600 SF and keeping minimal glazing on the South and West faces. The infill component was acquired by pulling the building away from the neighboring building on the East. The ventilation component was acquired by having South facing apertures that would allow for stack ventilation working in conjunction with the light well The single parent component was acquired by breaking up the building footprint to allow for an outdoor play space in which a parent would have many views to from the interior spaces. A semitransparent fence would enclose this outdoor space for site security and containment of a child.

beekman st. market Fall 2017 Documents Produced using Revit, Rhino, V-Ray, AutoCAD, and Photoshop Working directly with community members, leaders, and the non-profit organization, Working in Neighborhoods, this studio focused on improving physical and mental health in South Cumminsville, Ohio. Since community members had no access to fresh produce, my project aimed at providing the neighborhood of South Cumminsville with healthy food options while furthering a sense of community and togetherness. Following the cooperative grocery store model of to-be-built Apple Street Market in Northside, Ohio, Beekman Street Market would operate in conjunction with this business and be entirely community owned and operated.

My proposal for the Athenaeum was produced through site analysis, and iterating concepts and form. Spatial qualities I aimed to illustrate are forced perspective and stark contrast between the dark, monolithic exterior and light interior conditions. The entrance, wedged between the two heavy, tactile masses, offers a sense of compression and release.

The Body Mantel Fall 2014 Comprised solely of zip ties The Body Mantel was a project to be created from at least 100 of a like object, which would be fastened together using one method. The final project was to be worn on the body at a DAAPwide fashion show. Through material explorations, I discovered black zip ties in large quantities had a light reflecting and spatial quality. They could also be zipped onto one another easily and numerous ways. Using varying lengths of zip ties and layering them one over another, I crafted a large neck-piece that moved freely with the body, but also independently creating a meticulous and distinct form.
