A San Antonio Icon Evolves through History

Settled along the banks of the San Antonio River, just two miles north of downtown, is the Pearl Brewery, a site rich with history and architectural interest. Putting Texas on the map as a thriving mecca for beer production, “Pearl” as the locals call it, was a staple in industry and economy. Founded in 1881, as the J.B. Behloradsky Brewery, it soon became known as the City Brewery. Struggling under poor management, in 1883 a group of local businessmen formed the San Antonio Brewing Association and took over the business still under the City Brewery name. Working with the Kaiser Beck Brewery in Bremen, Germany, the iconic brew that would eventually make its mark on South Texas was discovered. In 1886, the brewery, now under the San Antonio Brewing Association name, sent its first bottles and wooden kegs of Pearl beer into local taprooms. The name Pearl came from that same German brew master who described the bubbles in a freshly poured glass of beer as a “perle,” the German word for pearl. In 1902, an executive at the successful Lone Star Brewery right down the road, Otto Khoeler, became president of the San Antonio Brewing Association. His first duty was to take this beloved local brew to a national level. Increasing the size of the brewery and the production capabilities, the San Antonio Brewing Association soon began national distribution of Pearl Beer. After his death, Otto’s wife Emma, a woman with keen business insight, took the helm. By 1911, the brewery was producing 110,000 kegs of beer annually, making the San Antonio Brewing Company the largest brewery in Texas. 4

I’ve concluded that all the things we build around ourselves — our homes, our collections, our interiors — are only the stage where we experience moments of luxury. I believe that true luxury is family, friends, hospitality and laughter.
Named to the AD 100, Architectural Digest’s list of the World’s Top Designers and Architects, Bill Stubbs is president of William W. Stubbs and Associates, a 25-year-old international interior design firm whose recent projects have taken Bill around the world to Kiev, Moscow, London, Hawaii, Acapulco, Palm Beach and Houston. His award-winning designs have included renovations of historical buildings, private homes and estates, vacation retreats, commercial multi-family properties, community housing projects for the elderly and most recently, the interior design of a large corporate jet. Stubbs is also host of Emmy-nominated Moment of Luxury, a lifestyle series that premiered on PBS in April 2008, where he brings his artistic eye, adventurous spirit and extensive knowledge that has made him one of the world’s leading interior designers.

The furnishings may be formal, but the ambiance is comfortable elegance. The tall circa ~ 1820 impressionist painting above the mantel is titled, The Path, and is unsigned. ABOVE TOP: My sister and brother-in-law wanted to build a house that will stand for many generations and pay homage to the typical architecture of San Antonio, starting with the extra-thick limestone and stucco walls. The style of the house blends the traditional Mexican hacienda with the architecture of Tuscany and the French Mediterranean. We collaborated on the project with Brit Perkins and Tammy Hodgson of EDI Architecture.
