PARADISE W alt Whitman’s famous poem “Song of Myself” contains the oft-quoted refrain, “Do I contradict myself?/Very well then I contradict myself/(I am large, I contain multitudes).” He could have been writing about the state of Florida.

Ask any number of people their idealized vision of Florida and you’ll receive just

as many incarnations. They will all be correct—paradise comes in an infinite amount of forms.

Florida is a state full of variety and wonderful contradictions. In fact, Florida is more than a single

state, but rather several states, states of mind, a conglomeration of physical, psychological and romantic terrain. The wooded northern parts of Florida identify more with the conservative Dixie temperament of south Georgia and Alabama than with South Florida, where the hot, high-frequency, high-net worth lifestyle is seasoned liberally with international salt. Somewhere in between is the central region, land of citrus groves and open space, sand ridges and lakes, moderate in both weather and outlook. “There’s a cultural change taking place across Miami-Dade and Broward counties,” he says. “There are new performing arts centers, there are new museums, new restaurants, as well as people coming from all around the world who are now calling Miami their home.” As star architects such as Zaha Hadid and Piero Lissoni—whom de la Vega calls “starchitects”—create bold new additions to the Miami skyline, the area’s cool factor is hitting critical mass. Miami has long been known for a strong Latin American and European presence but the rising cultural and economic temperature is inspiring younger émigrés, particularly from South America, to move here to begin their careers. The influx is driving demand in the condominium market, especially in stalwart destinations like Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Downtown and Brickell, known for its glamorous high-rise buildings overlooking Biscayne Bay. Fort Lauderdale, too, is experiencing growth from the South American demographic, though it still draws a strong Northeast and Canadian contingent. Communities like the Middle River neighborhood are increasingly attractive, as are classic, waterfront East Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods like Las Olas Isles with estates located on canals and harbors. Times are good. “People aren’t just coming to Miami and Fort Lauderdale now to go to the beach and party for three nights and leave,” de la Vega says. “They’re coming and they’re laying down roots, and it’s because of all these really great cultural changes that didn’t take place in the last boom.”
