about me I am Sierra Honesto, a designer from Lubbock, TX. I am a graduate of Texas Tech’s Bachelor of Science Architecture program. Now I am in my second year of the dual MArch/ MBA program. Throughout my academic career I have investigated new approaches to design processes, offering range and a variety of disciplines. I appreciate the versatility in architecture and design, and challenge myself to continously try new things. Through our creativity and expression, we are capable of utilizing our disciplines to resolve issues beyond architecture. An abundance of freedom exists within this realm, so I find it importan to keep exploring, creating, and problem solve through design.

IN BETWEEN Studio VIII

In Between is a research facility for the International Center for Arid and Semiarid Land Studies. This specific research focuses on arid and semi arid environments, which have little to no productivity. Lubbock, TX is considered one of these semiarid climates, provoking the project to engage with the outside. The project develops around a continuous relationship between outside and inside. This relationship will allow the user to develop an understanding between the surrounding environment and the prominent research being conducted. 1

The given site conditions are located on Texas Tech Campus, on the engineering key. More specifically in between the Civil Engineering building and former Holden Hall. Maximizing on the relationship between outside and inside, the plans develop around the existing pathways/circulation. The ground level floor engages with the surrounding context and allows for circulation to pass through. This strategy, creates new subdivisons within the building, forming the respective placement of programs.

The remaining levels introduce new programs of research labs, offices, study areas, auditorium, and living spaces. The program progresses through three divisions: Research, Public, and Private, which are sequenced east to west respectively. Wall Section DD highlights a unique overhang of the project located on the South facade. The overhang spaces are fully open to the exterior, offering an outdoor experience on all levels. The graphic demonstrates the function and structure of the project in this location.

The elevations offer perspective of different access points to the research facility. The West entrance is open to the engineering key. This allows the research to become fully transparent to the campus and students. The East entrance of the building, is still inviting for the lower levels. However, the walls become opaque, offering privacy to the residents and staff. Section CC visually shows the program transitioning from research to public to private. This section also highlights the center core for public circulation, and the overall project engaging with its context. 4

CLUSTER HOUSING Studio VII

Located in the crater of a caprock, a community coexists with its natural enviornment, offering a variety of housing units. The units were developed around the concept of cluster housing and analyzing the absolute necessities to sustain life. This project introduces a new scale to architecture, offering a grand site located on a caprock in Post, Texas. Cluster housing was developed through three phases, each focused on a different scale: micro, mezzo, and macro. The proposal contrasts scale and the land, allowing the user to fully expereince the vastness of West, Texas. 6

Master Plan

The images consist of different views, ideas, and phases which influenced the project. The tent challenged the comprhesion of a micro 1:1 scale in relation to the site. Understanding the micro scale was a fundamental step before macro planning.

The exploded axonemetric of the master plan represents both existing and proposed development. The concept of path, point, and place is also introduced as a variety of boundaries exist within the site.

Section BB

The vignettes are developed from the proposed master plan of the site. The different views represent a variety of programs and locations on the site.

To the left are different unit plans created for various users. Further exploring path, point, and place the plans are developed through diagramming. Each unit derives from a path and offers a specific point which allows the user to see beyond the current place.

The overall design utlizes the vast space of the caprock, while allowing the community to coexist within a natural condition.

Section BB shows the sequential circulation of path, point, and place. Each cluster of units has a viewing point, which allows the users to fully experience the caprock.

03 ECOLOGICAL URBANISMS Mapping Seminar

In Collaboration

The proposal looks to expand social platforms in Medellin, Colombia, using existing biophysical infrastructures. LCLA River Project was the case study researched. The project focused on revitalizing the barren canal, which runs throughout the city of Medellin, with social platforms. After analyzing Medellin, the project unintentionally neglects the outer edges of the city, which happen to be poverty strickened areas. Our proposal utilizes the existing water system to create a new network of social platforms. Using the natural biophysical feature, radii, distances, and mapping we propsed new platforms throughout the city of Medellin, in order to increase access to the edges of the city. 9

Districts Based off Poverty with Public Programs

Directly above are a series of maps used to locate high poverty areas. These maps formed a conclusion in which we realized the high poverty districts lacked access to primary resources. After further mapping these areas, we identified an informal settlement located on the outskirts. These findings influenced our proposal to offer more social platforms for the areas deprived of access. The final proposals were developed through a series of connections from existing social spaces an utilizing averages to create a new network accessible to everyone.

DELUGE Studio V

This project was located along the Triana river, in Seville Spain. It was clear the site offered many valuable strategies that inspired this proposal. The building offers an extreme condition that requires excavating the site, which will allow the river to flood the existing property. Flipping the condition of land and water inspired this design. In order to shape the form of a building regulating lines were pulled from the site along with a grid formed from the given property line. This grid formed the spaces and established two strong relationships present in the design: Public/Private and Static/Moveable. Deluge seperates while also connecting the different spaces. It is open to both public and private users but offers different experiences for each. The static spaces are available to everyone along with boatlike spaces which the user can experience out on the river. Deluge floods the site and creates new relationships to form throughout the building, and allows the user to fully experience the river. 11

DRAWING EARTH, PEOPLE, AND CONFLICT MEDIA COURSE

The overall research is focused on Earth, people, and conflict over the years. The course was set up on a weekly schedule with new topics covered each week. This covered research from when Earth was formed into today’s conflicts and environmental issues. The topics were covered in scale , in the beginning it was the Earth and the Universe’s entirety, but topics slowly became narrowed down to personal human scaled conlficts, which then relfected back on the rest of the worls. The research is also in drawing representation. The course was focused on new ways of thinking and expression in drawings. It challenged us as achitects to use architectural drawings in a new way and how can they be manipulated to inform and represent broader issues beyond architectural dilemmas.

HADEAN EARTH 4.6-3.8 Billion Years Ago In Collaboration

The representation works as a general timeline of Earth during this specific time period. Earth is created from a series of hot rocks colliding at a fast and powerful rate. Earth is in the Hadean period at this point until The Great Impact Hypothesis takes place. This is when a planetesimal, known as Theia, collided with the Hadean eon in order create the moon and its orbit. As a result of the collision the moon is formed and Earth begins to cool/ harden. Towards the end of the period all of the molten cools and land begins to form on the Earth’s crust. The drawing is a collage of photo realistic scenes. These moments are organized on a timeline, which explains Earth’s formation, along with the Moon’s.

LIFE

1000-1250 A.D. In Collaboration

The drawing is composed of specific countries in axonometric view. All of the countries are connected to a chunk of Earth being exploded from the map. Each piece of land has different scenes, representing historical events, inventions, and human impact on the environment. The drawing is mostly focused on Chinese Dynasties, because they had most of the influence during this time. The drawing moves from right to left, to represent the influence extending to the Western World over the years. This composition uses exploded axonometrics to reveal what major events were occuring. There is also movement throughout the drawing to encourage the reading from right to left.

PRAGMATIC 1960’S-1980’S In Collaboration

Pragmatic uses architectural representation to shine light on some of Earth’s historic events in the 1960’s-1980’s. The drawing is composed of two separate drawings, which can stand alone, or come together to create a transition between the two decades. Each drawing cuts through spaces, both in plan and section to reveal a series of scenes that track important events each year. The overall drawing appears chaotic but is made up of chronological events that occurred in the 1960’s-1980’s time period. Pragmatic manipulates architectural elements to represent Earth’s trials and tribulations in what appears to be a disarray, but is delicately arranged.

SOCIAL CONFLICT GLOBAL WATER CRISIS

Earth’s surface is made up mostly of water, it actually makes up about 70% of the Earth. However, only a scarce amount of water is available around the globe, less than 4% is fresh useable water. More than 80% of the world lives in high risk areas. Many countries are faced with these devastating conditions. These conditions only worsen over time and lock these countries into poverty. Canada and the U.S. are some of the countries least at risk. However, the lack of resources around the globe is alarming and important. The drawing is a 2D creation of a Rube Goldberg Machine that runs water throughout it. There are some blockages and interruptions along the way that effect some of the flowers (high-risk countries) that rely on the water to survive. The composition reveals a literal trickle effect of the Earth’s scarce fresh water supply.

EXTINCTION SNOW LEOPARD

Snow Leopards are at risk of becoming extinct. These majestic cats have been endangered for over the past few years. The main contributing factors are habitat loss, and death by humans. Climate change has effected a variety of environments, including the Himalayan Mountains in Asia. Other animals have been effected, decreasing the prey for Snow Leopards, making it difficult to find food. This leads to the leopards hunting on livestock, resulting in retaliatory killings. Snow leopards are also being hunted for their beautiful coats. Humans are also playing a role in habitat loss, due to salt mining. Snow leopards continue to be at risk, and are hard to find, which makes these creatures so mysterious. The drawing uses multiple perspectives to create a “find me” game, because these big cats are so rarely seen. The piece is also congested with human/ environmental impacts which pose risk to snow leopards. This makes it difficult to find them throughout the composition.

NATURAL DISASTERS

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES

Most wildfires are caused by humans, but they spread easily due to existing natural circumstances. Dry heat, wind, and fuel (trees) create the perfect triangle for a wildifre. Climate change worsens these conditions by increasing the heat and drought, which causes the fire to spread quicker. The drawing is a visual representation which uses imagery to show the effects of wildfires. Human impact/ dwelling is seen at a larger scale, but animals and the environment are visible at a micro scale in the drawing. Each square on the faded grid represents 4 sqmi making up the total 2,191 sqmi of land burned in the Top 10 California Wildfires. The drawing was created from a head on perspective which transitions into an aerial view of the fires. The bottom
