Fireworks laws Illegal fireworks can be a felony Fireworks stands are open in Madera City and Madera County, however, state law and county ordinance prohibits the use of fireworks in Eastern Madera County and Mariposa County. Safe and Sane fireworks are the only fireworks that are allowed to be sold in Madera County. All “Safe and Sane” fireworks have the State Fire Marshal seal stamped on them. Any fireworks that explode, move about the ground or shoot into the sky are dangerous and illegal in California. Parents may be held liable for any fire damage or injury caused by their children using illegal fireworks. Anyone caught with illegal fireworks or any fire-

Fourth of July Weekend Celebration
Summer fun safety tips Practice Boat Safety With the July 4th weekend at hand, all boaters should be reminded of the three C’s of boating safety. Boaters should use caution when operating their vessel, be courteous to other boaters on the water and use common sense. All boaters should: Have a sober operator: Don’t operate a boat under the influence of drugs and/ or alcohol. Alcohol and drugs affect judgment, vision, balance and coordination. The marine environment — motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and water spray — accelerates a drinker’s impairment; and decreases coordination, judgment and reaction time. Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket or personal floatation device at all times. The law requires
you to have a PFD on-board for each passenger; all occupants in a boat should wear a PFD at all times. The worse time to look for a PFD or life jacket is when you are already in distress.
Campfire Tips While camping, keep a shovel and bucket of water nearby to extinguish the campfire and clear all flammable vegetation at least 10 feet in all directions. How to Build an Open Campfire 8 Select a level, shaded location away from heavy fuels such as logs, brush or decaying leaves and needles. 8 Use a shovel to clear an area at least 10 feet in diameter. 8 Scoop a depression in the center of the cleared area in which to build the fire and put a ring of rocks
around it. 8 Fire must never be left unattended and the fire must be extinguished completely before everyone leaves camp. Fire Liability Liability for Damage. Any person, who personally or allows another person to willfully or negligently set fire to, or allows a fire kindled or attended by him to escape to the property of another, is liable to the property owner for any damages caused by the fire.

Stay safe before, during fire With fire season at hand, it’s always important to do everything possible to prevent fire. In case of a fire, always know the appropriate steps to take. What to do before a wildland fire: 8 Create defensible space to separate homes from flammable vegetation and materials with a minimum of 100 feet. 8 Adhere to all local fire and building codes and weed abatement ordinances. 8 Keep all trees and shrub limbs trimmed so they do not come into contact with electrical wires or overhang chimneys. Individuals should not trim around live power lines — call a professional. 8 Prune all lower branches 8 feet from the ground. 8 Keep trees adjacent
to buildings free of dead or dying branches. 8 Stack firewood away from homes and other buildings and keep clearance around piles. 8 Keep roof surfaces clear of pine needles, leaves and debris at all times. 8 Install spark arresters for each chimney. 8 Clean chimneys and check and maintain spark arresters twice a year. 8 Keep rain gutters clear of debris at all times. 8 Use approved fire resistant materials when building, renovating or retrofitting structures. 8 Install electrical lines underground if possible. 8 Be sure house numbers show clearly from the street, both day and night. 8 Store combustible or flammable materials in approved containers.

Always keep 100 ft. of defensible space A defensible space of 100 feet around your home is required by law — that includes dry grass, brush and timber covered land clean-up. The goal is to protect your home while providing a safe area for firefighters.
8 Create horizontal and vertical spacing between plants. The amount of space will depend on how steep the slope is and the size of the plants. 8 Large trees do not have to be cut and removed as long as all of the plants beneath them are removed. This eliminates a vertical “fire ladder.”
Lean, Clean and Green Zone Clearing an area of 30 feet immediately When clearing vegetation, use care surrounding your home is critical. This when operating equipment such as area requires the greatest reduction in lawnmowers. flammable vegetation. One small spark may start a fire; a string trimmer is much safer. Reduced Fuel Zone The fuel reduction zone in the remaining 70 feet (or to property line) will depend on the steepness of your property and the vegetation. Spacing between plants improves the chance of stopping a wildfire before it destroys your home. You have two options in this area:
Remove all build-up of needles and leaves from your roof and gutters. Keep tree limbs trimmed at least 10 feet from any chimneys and remove dead limbs that hang over your home or garage. The law also requires a screen over your chimney outlet of not more than 1/2 inch mesh. —Submitted by Cal Fire
kindling have already been ignited, and never use any flammable or combustible liquid other than charcoal starter fluid to get the fire going. Propane Grills •Check the propane cylinder hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. A light soap and water solution applied to the hose will reveal escaping propane quickly by releasing bubbles. •If you determined your grill has a gas leak by smell or the soapy bubble test and there is no flame: 8 Turn off the propane tank and grill. 8 If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. •Never store propane cylinders in buildings or garages. If you store a gas grill inside during the winter, disconnect the cylinder and

Children and Fires Children playing with fire cause hundreds of deaths and injuries each year. Preschoolers and kindergartners are most likely to start these fires, typically by playing with matches and lighters. 8 In 2006, children playing with fire started an estimated 14,500 structure fires that were reported to U.S. fire departments, causing an estimated 130 civilian deaths, 810 civilian injuries and $328 million in direct property damage. 8 Nearly two-thirds, 63%, of all fatal victims of fires by playing are children 5-years-old and younger. 8 Nearly two out of every three child-playing fires — and four out of five associated deaths and injuries — involve matches or

Did you know that more accidents occur during the warm weather months than any other time of year? As people head outdoors and enjoy what summer has to offer, they’re not always the most careful. Here are six potential dangers. Sunburn: Failure to apply — and reapply — sunblock can result in a nasty burn. Not only can it be painful, it could lead to dangerous skin cancer. Dehydration: Couple hot weather with outdoor exertion and a person can quickly get thirsty. Failure to replenish liquid lost through sweating and activity can result in dehydration. Fainting, feeling nauseous and headaches can occur. Food poisoning: Hot weather and improperly stored food can result in food poisoning. If you’ll be eating outdoors, cold foods
must remain cold and hot foods should be kept warm to prevent spoilage. Don’t eat any food that has been sitting outside for more than an hour. Insects: Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, spiders and all of the other winged and multi-legged creatures come out from their roosts when the temperature climbs. It’s more common for people to come in contact with potentially poisonous or bothersome insects. Water: Drownings in pools, lakes and rivers definitely increase as the weather gets warmer. Always practice the utmost care in and around water. Safety vests are essential. Vehicles: With more cars on the road during summer months, vehicular accidents can increase, primarily when alcohol is involved. —Metro Creative Services
FIRE SAFETY

Six Common Summertime Dangers
CLEAR YOUR WAY TO
THIS SUMMER BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE 1. Keep fresh batteries in home smoke detectors to maximize potential escape time. 2. Always make note of where fire exits are located when entering any building. 3. If your clothing catches on fire, roll back and forth on the floor to put it out.
8 Store matches and lighters out of children's reach and sight, up high, preferably in a locked cabinet. 8 Never use lighters or matches as a source of amusement for children; they may imitate you. 8 If your child expresses curiosity about fire or has been playing with fire, calmly but firmly explain that matches and lighters are tools for adults only. 8 Teach young children and school-age children to tell an adult if they see matches or lighters. 8 If you suspect your child is intentionally setting fires or unduly fascinated with fire, get help. Your local fire department, school, or community counseling agency can put you in touch with trained experts. Source: National Fire Prevention Association
