(Singapore) SIFA on Demand 5 — 12 Jun

MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR The world has changed dramatically in the last year. This is an extraordinary time for artists, where we have been asking ourselves: how can we still bring you great art and recreate the magic of the live experience? This is an enormous challenge, one which requires creativity, boldness and determination. With over 60 productions and over 300 performances, SIFA 2021 has been curated as a direct response to the here and now. It is a response to the care and compassion we need for ourselves, our community and our environment. It features exceptional artistes and companies who have learnt to adapt and present work that can reach audiences around the world, using a variety of technologies. And it will feature a record number of Singaporean commissions and collaborations. Besides shows that will take place in theatres and unique spaces around Singapore, SIFA 2021 will allow you to interact with artists “live” from around the world. There won’t be any shows that you watch passively on a screen. You can also expect the return of festival favourites such as our popular film offering, Singular Screens, as well as Festival House – the epicentre of the festival. It’s been an honour to helm our national festival and see it grow in stature, both at home and internationally, over the past four years. None of this would have been possible without the support of the incredible team at Arts House Ltd who have worked tirelessly to make this happen, and especially their Herculean efforts of mounting a festival of this scale during a pandemic. In a time where most of us can’t travel, SIFA looks forward to bringing the world to you, and Singaporean artists to the world. See you at SIFA 2021.

Gaurav Kripalani Festival Director

PROGRAMME NOTES Chinese Chamber Quintet 华乐室内乐五重奏 Isskimmer 冰景静心怡 Composed by Koh Bee Tuan Joyce 许美端 曲 Isskimmer, “shimmering ice” in Swedish, is a collection of six movements ranging from 20 seconds to 2 minutes. The creative impulse is to combine specific tone colours of the five instruments to produce distinct sonic characters. Along the compositional process, the visual imagery of different ice states revealed itself. The tranquil chords from the sheng and the guzheng with the resonance of the da luo are suggestive of ice shards in movements 1, 3, and 6. The resultant timbre of the membrane of the hua pen gu and the pizzicato of the double bass is evocative of the crackling sound of walking on hardened snow in movement 2. Coloured by the fluttering whispers in the wind gong, the tumbling figure of the yangqin is reminiscent of the downward trail of a sledge in the snow in movement 4. The shimmering rhythmic cymbal underlaid by an unsuspecting talea in the yangqin is expressive of the frosted ground in movement 5.

Liuqin, Sheng, Cello Trio with Chinese Chamber Ensemble 柳琴、笙、大提琴三重奏与华乐室内乐 Memory 忆 Composed by Benjamin Lim 林亿 曲 Personal memory, collective and social memories construct themselves in and around us. It allows us to understand whom we are, where we came from, where we might be headed. It binds and yet fragments, haunts yet spurs, remembers yet forgets. Memories waft up in the least unexpected of moments, disparate and often time disjunct to our current frame of thought, emotion or occasion. Do we suppress it or do we indulge? Do we forget or do we reminisce?

Chinese Chamber Dectet 华乐室内乐十重奏 Zen Thoughts 禅思 Composed by Chow Junyi 赵俊毅 曲 Although Zen is the heritage of ancient wisdom, it is also a source of bliss for the modern generation. In the frenetic pace of modern living, immense pressure is heaped on the individual. But if we practise Zen, we would have less worries as much of life’s contradictions would be resolved when we truly appreciate the meaning of Zen. The Buddhist song Zen Thoughts, refers to the idea of Zen and combines the distinct timbre of the various instruments to purify our souls.

Chinese Chamber Ensemble 华乐室内乐 Compassion 慈问 Composed by Luo Mai Shuo 罗麦朔 曲 Although no one can reverse the tide of time, love and faith are constants which would endure forever. 2020 is a special year. What can a composer bring to the people? Perhaps, music can unite people and bring forth a sense of care, love, faith and hope.

Chinese Chamber Ensemble 华乐室内乐 Bodhi 菩提 Composed by Wang Yun Fei 王云飞 曲 “Great awakening, Exceptional enlightenment, Nirvana rebirth, Supreme Bodhi.” “Mankind is suffering, but Dharma is boundless, turn to Bodhi and transcend worldliness.” “The world is in chaos, but Dharma is boundless, turn to Bodhi and be purified.”
