K1 - KNIGHTSBRIDGE ESTATE, KINGHTSBRIDGE, LONDON FLETCHER PRIEST ARCHITECTS K1 is a major mixed use redevelopment at the heart of one of London’s most prestigious shopping district. It will see the corner of Brompton Road and Sloane Street restored as the gateway to Knightsbridge. This design seeks to restore this key London city block by unlocking space for contemporary retail, offices and new apartments grouped around a sheltered open roof garden. Public realm improvements include wider pavements along Brompton Road with a new improved entrance to Knightsbridge Underground Station. Along the Brompton Road the ground floors of buildings will be restored so that individual gabled ‘houses’ are reconnected to the street. A new 100,000sq ft office building will be created with an entrance on Hoopers Court. A landscaped pocket square off Hooper’s Court will be home to an additional step-free access to the tube station that brings back to life redundant London Underground infrastructure. K1 introduces an oasis of calm to the heart of the development – a formal garden around which are grouped 35 new apartments. Above, there will be a rooftop restaurant masked by a series of perforated, angled shutters that are designed to act as a screen to protect the privacy of residents and angle the diners’ views towards the sunset over Harrods rooftops to the west.

THE BRUNEL BUILDING, PADDINGTON, LONDON FLETCHER PRIEST ARCHITECTS Brunel Building is an innovative new workplace located on the Grand Union Canal opposite Paddington Station. The scheme includes significant improvements to the public realm, and when complete will create a new section of canal towpath to link the Paddington Basin with Little Venice. Below ground constraints have generated a unique external structure that produces 3.5m high columnfree space throughout, while the shade from the structure allows large windows that give panoramic views from each floor. The industrial material palette celebrates stripped back, authentic materials including fair-faced concrete, saw-milled timber and salvaged light fittings. The structure rises above roof level to create glazed, wind sheltered gardens at the 14th and 16th floor levels. The building will exceed statutory environmental standards. The reception spaces and restaurants open onto the new south-facing public tow path with giant motorized doors.

AL - RAYYAN STADIUM FOR FIFA WORLD CUP 2022 - DOHA , QATAR PATTERN DESIGN _ 2015 Al Rayyan Stadium and Precinct is one of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The project includes 40,000 sits stadium, indoor training pitches and master planner for the precinct. The client theme for the site is Desert. This translates into a master plan concept of a caravan or journey in the desert landscape configured using a circle packing geometry. Evoking the idea of a gathering, the stadium is a contemporary tent set in a metaphoric dune landscape. A key feature of the stadium is its elegant, ornate façade: a contemporary interpretation of traditional Naquish patterns specific to Qatari culture. The stadium’s distinctive façade was created using cutting-edge parametric design so that the facade also plays an important role in cooling the building. The result is a landmark for Qatar that works effectively both as a world-stage for sport and something that is genuinely meaningful and welcoming locally.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING FOR 27 APARTMENTS | GRENOBLE - FRANCE ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION | WINNING PRIZE AKTIS ARCHITECTURE & URBANISM _ 2012 The project of 27 residential units is located in the south of Grenoble. The plot is on the intersection of two roads and it marks the entrance of the ‘Chatelet’ district. On the north side of the plot there is a school with three storey buildings, and on the south there are small pavilion residential units. The geometry of the terrain is very advantageous as the long side is oriented south with a road running along. The building is separated in two volumes, through the opening between you can see the inner yard containing a small garden. On the ground floor, there are commercial activities in one block, and a parking space in the other. All the apartments have a double orientation, north and south. The south façade has big openings and terraces in order to capture the sun; whereas the north façade is dedicated to the passageways that lead to the apartments. This arrangement prevents to a maximum the visual contact between the two blocks, assuring an intimacy for the residents but at the same time it ensures a cross ventilation of rooms. The south facade is coated with perforated white metallic sheets. The interior of the terraces and the two apartments blocks on the top of the south building are coated with wood. The facade includes an indentation in order to mark the two entrances, one for the shop on the ground floor and another for the apartments hall.

4 RESIDENTIAL BULDING WITH 74 APARTMENTS IN SEYSSIN - FRANCE AKTIS ARCHITECTURE & URBANISM _ 2012 This project of 74 residential units is located in Seyssin ,a community at the south eastern of France near Grenoble. This project makes part of a bigger residential development. The developer’s demands were constraining on this project because of two different investors in the same plot. Four different blocks are created that have two sharing car park on the ground floor, semi- buried in the natural landscape. The priority was to assure the maximum visual contact with the nature as the site is located in a remarkable natural environment. The shape of the floor plan is a pentagon, creating this way five elevations, maximizing the views towards the natural landscape. The terraces are placed on the angles of the pentagon volume, preserving the intimacy between the residents. All the apartments have double orientation. The blocks are white with the banisters encircling the construction made by perforated white metal. The car park is made of exposed concrete.

URBAN RENEWAL OF THE CITY OF BRIANCON _ BRIANCON, FRANCE AKTIS ARCHITECTURE & URBANISM The aim of this competition was to redesign entirely the centre of Briancon by rehabilitating the ancient military barracks, which are of great architectural and aesthetic interest and creating 800 residential units. The main characteristics of the city: the natural environment and the infrastructure where the main guidelines for the new conception. The spine of this project is the pedestrian walk and cycle path that run along the city centre from the city entrance “la bouclet” up to the sports facilities. A thick band of planting accompanies the track. On this urban promenade one discovers the square of the barracks, the new residential ecodistrict, and the commercial area of the city ending to the sports facilities. The residential project has a design that revaluates the relationship between urban and nature. The new buildings are aligned with the old conserved barracks. Bands of planting alternate with the new housing units penetrating this way into the urban grid. Every building has a North-South orientation. Their height and width are designed in a way that the shadows don’t impact the nearby buildings, this diminishes the energetics needs and favours the natural lighting of every residence. The ‘stripes’ of both the built and the planting create places of exchange, pedestrian walks, private and public gardens. The nature takes different forms in the urban landscape, meadows, playground areas, kitchen gardens, tree planted areas etc.

INTERSTITIAL ITERATIONS - INTERTWINING SYSTEMS FOR THE CONCEPTION OF THICK CONCRETE SHELLS S. SIFAKIS, I. KUZU, C. ZACCAGNINI | UCL, THE BARTLETT _ 2014 The question about the definition of the interstitial space is introduced into the conceptual reflection on concrete shells. The in-between space is no longer considered a residue – an inevitable consequence of other interactions. Gordon Pask notes in “The Architectural Relevance of Cybernetics” that earlier pure architecture was descriptive (a taxonomy of buildings and methods) and prescriptive (as in the preparation of plans) but it did little to predict or explain. In contrast, the cybernetic theory has an appreciable predictive power. This predictive and explanatory power leads the investigations and the experiments for the creation of a thick concrete shell. The thick concrete shell is the result of the combination of existing and innovative systems. Controlling systems shape the space configuration according to variable architectural requirements, defining the size and geometry through a parametric highly controlled procedure. Controlled systems formulate the void, carving away material from the concrete volume, resulting in a new material topology this of a reticulated three - dimensional concrete lattice. These entwining systems inject new methodologies to the design of concrete shells fuelling the process in an architectural and material level.

STITCHING THE CITY SCAPE WITH THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE SALT LAKES IN LARNAKA DIPLOMA PROJECT S. SIFAKIS, S. SAVVA | NTUA _ 2011 The diploma project was a reflection on the landscape of the salt lakes in Larnaca, Cyprus. The relationship between the salt lakes and the city of Larnaca, which extends to the borders of its Natura limits, has always been problematic and in the process of definition. The ecological balance of the environment around the salt lake is endangered and polluted by the airport located at the south, the highway that follows the limit of the protected Natura area and the uncontrolled growth of the city from the north. The design intention is to prevent the city growth towards the salt lake. The concept is to bring the natural environment towards the city, so a ‘juncture’ between the two is introduced. An urban public space that connects the urban landscape to the nature restructuring the passage from the urban to the green. A main path guides you from the city centre to the Natura area. On this path is located an information point at the entrance of the Natura perimeter and an environmental information and education centre. Both are castrated into the natural topography. The buildings are designed in a way that they adjust to the existing landscape, melting into the natural relief. At the south façade of the information point frames of louvered shutters are used in order to ensure light control. For the environmental educational centre on the North West façade the same frames of louvered shutters are oriented towards the north in order to assure a stable lighting of the exhibition hall. The walls are “rammed earth” using the local soil , this contributes to the bioclimatic functioning of the building. The cross - ventilation is assured with dormers. The finishes of the roof is made by soil cement: a melange of cement and soil, the same material is used the long of the path. The structural walls are concrete an are exposed.
