FROM THE GRAND PRESIDENT
S
eeing my son return to the Chapel Hill campus and North Carolina Delta this fall, I couldnโt help but reflect on how different college is today than when I was in school 30 years ago. Courses are taught online, freshman dorms rival corporate housing in their amenities, and the pressures and challenges students face in a hyper-connected, global community would have been completely foreign to any of my Indiana chapter brothers in 1984. Yet, much has stayed the same. Students and their campuses still need leadership, and they still need SigEp โฆ perhaps now more than ever. Your support ensures SigEpโs continued role as a critical and valued partner in higher education. Because of you, the 2014 fiscal year was one of significant progress and unprecedented success, and Iโm excited to share with you our 2014 Annual Report. By the end of the 2013-2014 school year, SigEp was supporting the growth and development of 15,286 menโmaking us the largest national fraternity. Our continued success and relevance among college males is driven by our brand-defining Balanced Man Program. Undergraduates spend 90 percent of college outside of a classroom, and the Balanced Man Program helps brothers use that time to develop skills and experiences they need to succeed in college and beyond. Our brothers are Rhodes and Marshall Scholars, varsity athletes, and student body presidents. Collectively, they achieved the highest GPA in our Fraternityโs history last year with a 3.14. We have continued to invest in volunteers and university partnerships. Last year, 149 SigEp faculty fellows made academic support a central piece of the chapter experience, and a new property management service was developed to allow volunteers to shift their focus from addressing housing issues to mentoring our undergraduates. Last year also saw the accreditation of two new Residential Learning Communities, bringing our total to 48, and we expect to see further growth in the coming semesters. Our nationally acclaimed series of leadership events continued to give brothers the chance to develop the leadership and life skills they need to make a difference in their chapters, campuses and communities. Enrollment in our leadership events reached an all-time high of 7,911 in the 2013-2014 school year, giving more students access to leadership programs than any other fraternity.

SIGEP ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | SIGEP.ORG
Preparing our brothers to succeed upon graduation has become a major focus for SigEp. Our newest leadership event, Life After College, has touched the lives of 658 men since it first launched in 2013, and career preparedness education was added to Carlson Leadership Academies, Conclave and EDGE last year. None of this would have been possible without your support. Undergraduate success is the product of a better SigEp experience, and weโve been able to make these strides because you stood with us last year. In our 2014 fiscal year, brothers and friends gave 2.5 million dollars in support of SigEp. 1,011,587 of those dollars came in the form of unrestricted gifts critical to supporting the chapter programs, leadership events and scholarships that give SigEp our competitive edgeโan 8 percent growth in giving since last year. We also welcomed 496 new brothers and friends to our donor family. Since Conclave, our Educational Foundationโs Board of Trustees has focused their efforts on providing outstanding fiduciary oversight of Foundation assets. Under the leadership of President Dr. Edward Hammond, Emporia State โ66, our Trustees have worked tirelessly to ensure that Foundation practices exceed industry standards and your expectations as a donor. Hammond, President Emeritus of Fort Hays State University and the longest-serving college leader in the Kansas regents system, brings 48 years of experience to an already talented board. Under their guidance, our endowed funds grew by 15 percent in 2014 to reach 12.96 million by June 30, 2014. This year has given us so much to celebrate. It has also reminded us that we have work ahead. Undergraduate fees still provide funding for 80 percent of the SigEp experienceโa dependence that limits the reach of our programs, events and scholarships each year. I am confident that with your continued support we will soon be able to give every deserving brother access to the best SigEp experience. Thank you for believing in SigEp. Your support makes our Fraternity the most empowering and transformative part of college for our brothers. Fraternally, Phillip A. Cox Grand President

T
oday, 90 percent of the college experience takes place outside the walls of a classroom, and SigEp has the ability to forever change the lives of those who spend that 90 percent with us. With your support, we are able to do more each year, to innovate and to serve as a valued partner in higher education. Our brothers enjoy an experience defined by chapter programs that support their daily growth, leadership events that equip them with the skills they need to lead their chapters and communities, and scholarships that keep academic success at the forefront of their minds.

THE BALANCED MAN PROGRAM Throughout my years in college, I know I have been made better as a result of the Balanced Man Program and Sigma Phi Epsilon. At first, I didnโt want to go Greek, but then I realized that SigEp was different, and its core values were essentially an extension of those on which I was raised. The Balanced Man Program promoted those values through its principles of equal rights and responsibilities for every member and its focus on being excellent physically and intellectually. As a result, I feel more prepared to take on life after college.โ โWill Menas, Alabama โ15

SIGEP ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | SIGEP.ORG
Some of the most important lessons from college are learned outside of a classroom. Ninety percent of college takes place outside of classroom walls. Itโs in this part of the college experienceโthe unplanned, unstructured hoursโthat students discover their passions and plan for their futures. For our brothers, much of this time is spent with their chaptersโitโs where they learn how to communicate and work with others, to lead and speak in front of a crowd. The Balanced Man Program is the centerpiece of their SigEp chapter experience. The program is designed to provide the structure, support and guidance that is typically lacking in college. Alumni-volunteers, faculty and mentors provide personal and professional guidance through a program focused on scholarship, leadership and life skills. The refinement of these crucial skills helps our brothers succeed upon graduation and prepares them to achieve balance in every aspect of their lives.

residential learning communities SigEpโs Residential Learning Community
program expands upon traditional residential college models from Oxford and Cambridge to provide brothers with a living-learning environment where they are surrounded by high-achieving peers and university faculty. Faculty fellows and graduate students serving as resident scholars teach classes, host office hours and facilitate discussions, all within the chapterโs home. Brothers at RLC chapters have higher grades, are more engaged in campus activities, and are more likely to spend their time outside of the classroom developing life skills they need to succeed after graduation. Today, 48 chapters are accredited through a rigorous RLC application process, but the elements of this program can be found at any SigEp chapter. Gifts from alumni and friends support the four core areas of these living-learning communities: consistently productive Balanced Man Program experiences, university partnerships supported by faculty fellows, strong networks of volunteer support, and physical environments conducive to academic success.

While the house is the heart of our RLC program, brothers have fostered an environment of living and learning that extends beyond the house. The Residential Learning Community program truly sets SigEp apart. Over the past four years, I have been impressed time and again with how undergraduate members take advantage of the unique space to excel academically, socially and developmentally. They emerge from this program not only as accomplished students and scholars, but as future leaders and confident, balanced young men. Working with the exceptional men of SigEp has been very personally rewarding. รข€? รข€”Christine Probett, San Diego State Faculty Fellow

VOLUNTEERS I had the opportunity to meet so many highly talented and experienced volunteers from chapters in our region. Hearing them readily share both their successes and shortcomings was invaluable as a new volunteer. I left invigorated to improve my chapterโs AVC, and all of the advice I received that weekend has helped us immensely. We have since created a new LinkedIn group to connect with brothers around the country and plan on starting a mentoring program between undergraduates and alumni, an idea I got from Carlson.โ โDylan Heart, St. Maryโs โ12

VOLUNTEERS EDUCATED AT CARLSON
VOLUNTEERS EDUCATED AT CONCLAVE
Volunteers serving at the local, regional and national levels are a huge part of SigEpโs success. Many of SigEpโs volunteers are alumni who stay involved to give back. Others are members of the universityโs faculty and staff as well as parents and community leaders who volunteer because they believe in SigEpโs ideals and want to make an impact on the lives of undergraduate men. Their involvement means that our brothers are supported by strong mentors and role models. Each year, volunteers have opportunities to hone their skills and connect with peers and mentors at SigEpโs leadership events. In our 2014 fiscal year, Carlson Leadership Academies and the Grand Chapter Conclave offered expanded opportunities for volunteer education.

EDGE EDGE IS WHERE I saw the kind of family I had chosen to belong to for the rest of my life. The second I met the first brother from a different chapter, I realized I was a part of something bigger. I discovered teamwork, character building, trust and the true essence of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. More importantly, I discovered that I will always have someone to catch me if I fall.โ โParker Maddox, Virginia Commonwealth โ17

CARLSON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY I LOVE CARLSON BECAUSE itโs not what you get in a typical classroom. Itโs full of higher level questions and concepts that help us really think strategically about how to improve our chapters. Carlson Leadership Academies continued to offer more brothers an opportunity to develop their leadership skills in 2014. Contributing to the growing demand for this program are aspiring chapter officers who seek out the leadership education offered at these academies. More brothers find leadership through Carlson
2014
Carlson Leadership Academies provided hands-on leadership training to 2,701 undergraduates and volunteers this year. New officers, volunteers and rising chapter leaders gathered in five cities across the country for training in team development, goal setting and officer roles. Recent additions to this program include tracks focused on helping chapters implement the Balanced Man Program and recruitment best practices. This yearโs Carlsons also added a session on how chapter officers can develop habits and experiences that translate to the workplace. These academies are named for Brother Curtis L. Carlson, Minnesota โ37, founder and chairman of the Carlson Companies. Brother Carlsonโs philanthropic support and leadership helped expand this program from previously smaller leadership academies. Today, the Carlson Leadership Academies are supported by gifts to SigEpโs Annual Fund.

LIFE AFTER COLLEGE Securing a dream job right out of college is no easy task, but SigEp is giving our brothers the power to take control of their post-collegiate lives. Life After College is a two-day leadership event designed to give SigEp undergraduates the life skills and career insights they need for post-collegiate success. Alumni, volunteers, local business leaders and human resource professionals lead group coaching and one-on-one mentoring sessions. The weekend wraps up with a SigEpexclusive career fair where brothers have the chance to put all of their networking skills into action, learn about specific industries and company cultures, and meet with potential employers.

For me, Life After College was one of those moments IN COLLEGE when you know that what youโre learning NOW will be directly applicable to your future success. I found that the interview portion of the program was especially helpful when I started interviewing for jobs. Successful alumni and SigEp staff grilled participants with questions and then offered advice on how to improve. This experience proved invaluable when I was sitting across the table from potential employers. I have no doubt that the knowledge and skills gained from Life After College are the reasons I was able to secure a job as a management consultant for an energy company in Houston, Texas.โ โNathan Irby, Louisiana State โ14

grand chapter conclave CONCLAVE SHOWED ME JUST WHAT IT IS THAT MAKES OUR FRATERNITY SO GREAT. As I
witnessed the presentation of the Honor of Philias, and later applauded recipients of the Order of the Golden Heart, I realized that the brotherly love in this Fraternity can go so much deeper and further than I had ever imagined. Throughout those events, I felt like I had witnessed the true meaning of Sigma Phi Epsilon.โ

SIGEP ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | SIGEP.ORG
Since 1903, brothers from every chapter and from every corner of the world have gathered to honor the past, celebrate the present and plan for the future through this biennial gathering. The 53rd Grand Chapter Conclave in Dallas, Texas was host to more than 1,400 attendees and gave undergraduates an opportunity to put their leadership skills into practice. Policy was set, national leaders were elected, and new skills were developed. Conclave also offered undergraduates an expanded educational curriculum including recruitment workshops, lessons on leadership and professional development programming.
SigEp places significant voting power in the hands of our undergraduate brothers. At our 53rd Conclave, delegates adopted several BIG changes that will make a lasting impact on the Fraternity. The following are some of the most significant and memorable pieces of legislation.
Expanding the quality and reach of programs. More undergraduates learn essential life skills from SigEp than ever before, but a lack of funding restricts access to Fraternity programs for thousands of brothers each year. To expand the quality and reach of these vital programs, delegates voted to raise undergraduate fees and called for a renewed focus on fundraising, noting the rising cost of higher education and mounting student debt. New minimum GPA set at 2.6. To help SigEp further its culture of academic excellence, a new minimum eligibility standard was adopted. Undergraduates wishing to join SigEp must now have at least a 2.6 college GPA or a 2.7 high school GPA. Once a brother, he must maintain a 2.6 GPA each term. A single philanthropic and service learning partner. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was named as SigEpรข€™s single national philanthropic and service learning partner. This partnership provides opportunities for undergraduates to engage with their communities while making a positive impact on the lives of young men across the country.

Inspired by the ancient Greek ideals of Sound Mind and Sound Body, the Tragos Quest to Greece gives sixteen scholars the chance to explore Greek culture and contemplate the origins of SigEpโs values. NATIONAL COMPETITION SCHOLARSHIPS Each year the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation awards 20 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to SigEp undergraduates who have distinguished themselves through academic, campus, community and Fraternity accomplishments. National Competition Scholarship recipients represent the best of SigEpโs commitment to be a valued partner in higher education. These scholarships are made possible by Annual Fund donors and endowed gifts.
My SigEp experience, more than anything, has taught me the great importance of having a loyal group of brothers that will support you in any situation. I really tried to prevent financial burdens from getting in the way of staying active at school. During my last two years this became a challenge as tuition increased and most of my high school scholarships ended. The Zollinger Scholarship made it possible for me to maintain balance in my life and never have to consider leaving the organizations I cared about to have more time to work. I am very thankful that the incredible contributions of another brother in my chapter could help me succeed.โ โSeth Koch, Michigan โ14
ZOLLINGER SCHOLARSHIPS Each year, the Zollinger Senior Award is presented to an outstanding senior in each of SigEpโs 26 districts for scholastic and extracurricular excellence. In turn, their chapter is able to award a Zollinger Scholarship to a rising leader during his junior and senior years. Recipients of Zollinger Scholarships are sophomore brothers who possess special potential for future leadership roles in their chapter and on campus. Scholars receive a $500 scholarship in their junior year and another $500 scholarship in their senior year.

HICKS SCHOLARShips As a sophomore in college, Thomas 0. Hicks, Texas-Austin โ68 was motivated by the Texas Alpha Chapter to get serious about his grades, which had suffered during his freshman year. He improved his GPA significantly that year and kept it up, eventually obtaining a masters degree at Southern California. In funding this special scholarship program, Brother Hicks recognizes and rewards brothers who get on track with their grades after a poor start. These scholarships go to SigEp juniors who have significantly improved their GPA since their freshman year. Brother Hicks is a Life Trustee of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, has been the owner of the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars, and is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hicks Holdings LLC, a private investment firm based in Dallas, Texas.
2014 HICKS scholars Chris Hughes Northern Kentucky โ15 Art Education, 3.1 GPA Historian Joseph Choi Carnegie Mellon โ15 Computer Science, 3.46 GPA VP of Recruitment & Balanced Man Scholarship Chairman Adrian Vinas Florida International โ15 Finance, 2.86 GPA Chaplain Jeremy Nafus Lawrence Tech โ15 Information Technology, 3.67 GPA VP of Finance
The Hicks Scholarship means more than just financial aid to me. As a freshman, I fell behind on my coursework and earned some pretty tough grades. Getting my act together and working toward improvement has been a personal journey, so itโs encouraging and awesome to receive this acknowledgement from my Fraternity. Iโd like to thank all of my brothers who have supported me along the way and Thomas O. Hicks for encouraging our entire brotherhood to always keep striving for excellence.โ โJoseph Choi, Carnegie Mellon โ15

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS Created by an anonymous donor with an appreciation for the lessons learned through studying abroad, this scholarship helps deserving brothers fund their study abroad experience. Each year, a single recipient is selected from a competitive pool of applicants based on demonstrated academic success, campus involvement and chapter leadership. The recipient receives a $1,000 scholarship.
This scholarship allowed me to gain an experience that was life changing. As a biomedical engineering student pursuing the medical field within low-resource countries, the perspective I gained during my trip will stay with me for years to come. This generous scholarship has allowed me to pursue my passion and get that much closer to making a real impact on the world.โ โDaniel Hageman, Case Western โ14

SigEp donors provide our brothers with unique and invaluable opportunities to develop as leaders and balanced men. It is no coincidence that chapters taking advantage of these opportunities outperform their peers. The following report card provides a snapshot of each active chapterโs participation in SigEp programs and leadership events. Also displayed are measures of performance seen through GPA, recruitment and retention of members, and Buchanan Cup awards for chapter excellence.

Named after SigEpโs Hoop of Steel Senior Charge, the Hoop of Steel Society celebrates undergraduate brothers and the bonds theyโve formed through SigEp. Undergraduates make symbolic contributions to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, with many making their gifts in honor of mentors who have helped define their SigEp experience.

Dave Calderon and wife Dina, both SigEp volunteers, with California-Riverside brothers and Chapter Counselor Kevin Fleming, Loyola Marymount โ00.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS
The Board of Governors celebrates the generosity of alumni, spouses, parents, volunteers, staff and friends who contribute $1,200 or more each year in unrestricted gifts. Also recognized are undergraduates and donors under 30 who contribute $600 or more through the Beacon Society. The leadership these donors demonstrate with their gifts allows SigEp to expand the quality and reach of chapter programs, regional and national leadership events, and academic scholarships annually.

SIGEP ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | SIGEP.ORG
I had a truly transformative experience as an undergraduate, and itโs that experience that I still value today โฆ itโs the reason why I give back. Annual giving is the part of the fabric of what we should do as SigEps. Your lifelong commitment to SigEp is to give your time, talent and treasure. Carlson, Conclave, Ruck, Tragos, EDGE โ those programs donโt exist without funding from alumni like myself and others.โ โDave Calderon, CalPoly-Pomona โ88

I donate to Sigma Phi Epsilon as a small token of appreciation for everything this Fraternity did for me as an undergraduate, and everything it continues to do for me to this day. SigEp provided me with once in a lifetime opportunities like Ruck and the Tragos Quest to Greece, and the experiences Iโve had, along with the knowledge Iโve gained along the way, could never be qualified with any amount of money. Even as a young professional with limited disposable income, I find a way to help give back to the Fraternity that has given me so much. With donations like mine, I hope that SigEp can continue to provide opportunities to undergraduates for many generations to come.โ โDaniel McCaulley, Arkansas Tech โ11 To learn more, visit sigep.org/boardofgovernors

Early in my college years at NC State University, SigEp invited me to become a member. That occasion turned out to be one of the most treasured steps of my life. I say one, since the best was to pursue and capture that real love of my life, Callie Anne. Over the years we have been blessed to experience countless personal and business experiences. Along the way we have been blessed to share our fortune with various organizations such as SigEp, colleges, churches, museums and other organizations. Underlying all this, I frequently realize that SigEp and the things it taught me have been invaluable. Qualities such as honesty, integrity, ambition, loyalty, and fraternity have always been an integral part of my life.โ โW. H. Clark, North Carolina State โ56

The generosity of W. H. and Callie Anne Clarkโs planned gift will allow them to pass on these values to young SigEps for generations to come.

WAYS TO GIVE
ONLINE
You can make online gifts quickly and securely with a credit or debit card at sigep.org/give.
RECURRING GIFTS
You can ensure that your record of generous giving continues uninterrupted by establishing a recurring gift. Many of SigEpรข€™s most loyal donors set up monthly, quarterly or annual gifts online at sigep.org/give or by phone at 804.353.1901.
CASH OR CHECK
You can mail a check, cash or credit card gift to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation at 310 South Boulevard, Richmond, Va. 23220.
STOCKS Our donors are united in their belief that a SigEp experience can be truly transformational. As a public charity and a 501(c)(3) corporation, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation provides brothers and friends with a variety of ways to impact the lives of our youngest brothers and support the programs, events and scholarships that define their undergraduate years.
Gifts of stocks or mutual funds are great ways to support SigEp and often provide significant tax benefits for donors. Our Headquarters staff can help you or your financial advisor make these gifts, or you can read more online at sigep.org/givestock.
CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS
Many companies will match their employeesรข€™ contributions to nonprofits like the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation. Some even match gifts made by retirees and spouses. Visit sigep.org/match to learn more and see if your company will match your gift.
HONOR AND MEMORIAL GIFTS
Making a gift in honor or in memory of a brother, family member or friend is a great way to pay tribute to those who have made an impact in your life. Our Headquarters staff will inform honorees (or living relatives) of your generosity.

ENDOWMENTS AND NAMED GIFTS
Named gifts allow donors to make a leadership level impact on the lives of our brothers, while endowed funds ensure that impact continues in perpetuity. Donors can establish endowments and named gifts for specific use such as chapter programs, leadership events, scholarships, faculty fellows or study abroad. The Foundation works with each donor to prepare guidelines for the administration of endowed and named funds.
PLANNED GIFTS
Planned gifts allow you to leave a legacy by making a gift for the future that costs you nothing today. You can make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation as a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. Donors with documented planned gifts on file with our Educational Foundation are honored through the Legacy Society.
