MAY the Fun be With YOU!
By Michele E. Buttelman Signal Staff Writer
May is nearly here and so are many of our favorite May celebrations including Stars Wars Day and Cinco de Mayo.
Stars Wars Day is celebrated on May 4. The date originated from the pun “May the Fourth be with you,” a variant of the Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force be with you.”
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for May the Fifth, the date that celebrates Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The best part of Cinco de Mayo in the Santa Clarita Valley is the numerous restaurants where you can celebrate the day eating tacos and drinking margaritas.
May is also the month to attend the Los Angeles County Fair and the California Strawberry Festival. Viva May!

Best Sports For Older Adults, According To Experts
By Robby Brumberg Forbes Health
The joy of playing sports may seem like a young person’s game. But why should they have all the fun—not to mention all the health benefits — that can be unlocked by athletics?
According to research conducted at a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research center, older adults can reap an array of rewards from physical activity, ranging from improved physical, emotional and social health scores to a decreased risk of hospitalization.
Thankfully, your athletic glory days don’t have to end as you age. In fact, here are some of the best sports and athletic endeavors for older adults to enjoy according to experts, science and data.
Why Staying Active Is Essential
Exercise is crucial for the mind, body and soul, according to Rachel Tavel, a doctor of physical therapy and Forbes Health Advisory Board member.
“Staying active as we age is incredibly important for a number of mental, physical and emotional reasons,” she says. Participating in sports, whether individually or as part of a club, group or team, is a terrific way to provide a consistent spark of motivation to stay moving. That movement is especially important as we get older and our bodies start losing muscle and bone, says Dr. Tavel.
“Sports can provide a great way for aging adults to improve their cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal strength and even coordination and balance. Not to mention, it’s a great opportunity to be social.”
Recommended Sports to Try
Pickleball
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. — and for good reason. The tennis/ping-pong hybrid sport is fun, fast-paced and highly social, and it can be enjoyed at just about any age or skill level. The “all are welcome” nature of pickleball is a big draw as well — especially for older adults.
Research backs the benefits of this paddle-powered sport. A study of 153 older adults in the journal Leisure Studies found playing pickleball to be associated with lower levels of depression. It also confirmed that pickleball can support better handeye coordination, increase agility and coordination, and boost muscle strength and function.
Golf
For millions around the world, golf is much more than a game. It’s a refuge, a passion and an indispensable mental health outlet. It’s also conduit for meaningful social connectivity.
As a study in the Golf Science Journal found, playing golf is associated with improved physical health and mental well-being, which can potentially contribute to increased life expectancy[3].
Another nice aspect of golf is that you can choose
to walk or ride in a cart, depending on how much exercise or exertion you’re after.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a duffer, terrible putter or serial slicer. The beauty of golf is in spending time outdoors, hitting a few nice shots and getting a bit of exercise, all while enjoying the pleasure of good (and hopefully patient) company.
Swimming
Swimming is great for cardiovascular health and can be easier on the joints than high-impact sports, as it provides a sense of buoyancy, says Dr. Tavel. However, there is a possible downside.
“This buoyancy can also work against some people by reducing the stress needed to load the musculoskeletal system enough to maintain and increase bone strength,” explains Dr. Tavel.
With that said, swimming is generally a terrific sport for older adults. It can provide a broad array of physical and mental health benefits, from protecting mental health to lowering your risk of early death.
Exercise Classes
Don’t underestimate the power of group aerobic activity. A study conducted by the University of Washington’s Health Promotion Research Center state found older adults who participated in a program called EnhanceFitness at least once a week experienced significantly fewer hospitalizations and lower health care costs than those who didn’t participate.”
Researchers from the same institution compared an exercise class group with a cohort of non-attendees and found the exercise classes led to significantly better health statuses for the exercise group by a range of 10% to 30%.
Whether you prefer yoga, pilates, Jazzercise, tai chi or something else entirely, you can find a class or group that sparks your interest and benefits your health.
Lower Mobility Options
Those with limited mobility may have to modify their sport participation or perhaps seek training prior to getting involved. Another option may be to try different variations of more common sports. For example, sports like walking soccer and walking basketball (which are played the same as soccer and basketball, respectively, just with no running allowed) are gaining momentum.
Even if you don’t feel up to joining an official club or team, you can still work with a physical therapist or personal trainer to address your limitations and options that may best suit you, says Dr. Tavel. She notes stationary cycling, seated resistance exercises and even simple movements like getting up and down from a chair or going for long walks as valuable forms of exercise that can help people stay active and socially independent. Shuffleboard, darts, billiards, bocce ball and fishing are lots of fun, too.
Focus on Social Bonds
Whatever activity you choose to pursue, it’s smart to focus on the communal and social aspects of sports, according to Sarah Lock, senior vice president of policy at AARP.
“Our experts recommended choosing a simple, achievable goal you think you might enjoy,” she says. “If your goal is to become more physically active, for example, if you hate running but like to dance, look for a dance class you can join instead of signing up for a 5K. Think about choosing an activity you can do with another person so you can be each other’s ‘accountability buddy,’ which can help you each sustain the activity and provide social engagement.”
Communities and caring individuals can help get older adults in the game and continue forging strong social bonds, too.

Now is the Time to Plant Those Summer Flowers
By Michele E. Buttelman Signal Staff Writer
April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. Years of unceasing drought brought many a perennial flower garden to its knees in the Santa Clarita Valley. But the past few years of bountiful rain makes one’s gardening heart flutter with possibilities.
However, before going too crazy and risking gardening disappointment, it’s important to remember that the normal climate in the SCV is considered to be a Mediterranean climate, approaching a semi-arid climate, with hot, dry summers.
With the ever-present threat of drought and constant messages to conserve water, even in “moist” years, how can you balance conservation and a beautiful garden?
So, that begs the question, what should you plant for beautiful summer blooms?
Wildflowers
With all the recent rain it is likely your gardens still have a healthy moist water reserve several inches deep. If you throw a handful of wildflower seeds into your gardens, for example California poppies, you still have a high probability of being rewarded with sprouts in just a few weeks and if nurtured they should bloom within 60 days, if not sooner.
They will die back fairly quickly with the approaching summer weather but are joyful to experience, even if it only for a few weeks.
Weather will determine the success of this project. If the mild spring continues you will be glad you took a chance of bringing these beautiful blooms to your garden. If the fierce summer temps make an early appearance, it might all be for nought.
Seed packets of mixed wildflowers can be found at most garden stores or online.
Classic Perennials
There are some classic “old-fashioned” perennials you can plant that seem to enjoy the dry, harsh summers that the SCV experiences in a normal year.
If you baby them through their first summer there is a good chance you will be rewarded with perennial summer blooms for years to come with little maintenance.
Here is a list of suggested hardy perennials:
Santa Barbara Daisy
If you want a multitude of showstopping blooms this summer the Santa Barbara Daisy is a vigorous, no-maintenance garden plant with gray-green leaves and profusions of yellow-center flowers.
The Santa Barbara Daisy blooms profusely from spring through fall and attracts butterflies and beneficial insects.
The petals start out as white but then fade into pink or purple.
Matilija Poppy
The perfect addition to a no-maintenance garden is the Matilija Poppy. This not really a shrub, not just a flower grows riotous foliage and is one of the largest and showiest California poppies. Large white petals with a crinkled texture surround yellow centers, giving this poppy a cheerful appearance. Its flowers, which can be as large as seven inches across, are attractive to bees and butterflies.
Lily of the Nile
A native to Africa Lily of the Nile is a low-maintenance perennial perfect for warm climates. Blooming in late summer they grow large spherical flower clusters atop long stalks. The flowers are funnel-shaped and typically blue, purple or white. The attractive, thick, dark green leaves are sword-shaped. Lily of the Nile is a great container flower.
African Iris
The African Iris is an easy-maintenance plant perfect for planting along a walkway. This this summer bloomer loves hard-to-grow spots, bearing dozens of white flowers from spring through summer. The African Iris has a long season of flowering from spring through fall. The plant thrives in full sunlight and is very drought-tolerant.
California Fuchsia
Everyone loves beautiful fuchsias. Fuchsias can bring bold color to a drab landscape. A long bloomer and heat-resistant the California fuchsia offers intense hot-red or orange flowers all summer. California fuchsia flowers are perfect for hummingbird pollination. The flowers provide an important nectar source for many pollinator species, including bees and hummingbirds. This is a hardy wildflower with trumpet-like blooms, different than many hothouse fuchsias, but no less lovely.
Bird of Paradise
Bird of Paradise adds a tropical flair to any no-maintenance garden with glowing orange blooms. Plant one, or plant a group, to give your garden a dramatic centerpiece. It is a classic for traditional drought-tolerant gardens.
Kangaroo Paw
Another tropical-inspired perennial, the Kangaroo Paw is a slender bloomer that can grow five-foot branches which add height to your summer garden. It produces delicate flowers that are tubular and resemble a cute kangaroo’s paw, from which it gets its name. Flowers from spring to mid-summer.
Bear’s Breeches
Bear’s Breeches is a funny name for what is a tall and beautiful flowering perennial. These easy-maintenance plants can shoot up flower spikes in summer up to 4 feet high. Bear’s Breeches is also distinctive for its huge, coarse leaves which adds an interesting “texture” to garden plantings.
Blue Passionflower
The Blue Passionflower is a hardy vine that likes full sun. Plant along a trellis, fence, or arbor and watch it climb. Or let it sprawl unsupported as a ground cover. It has large flowers that bloom all summer. Flowers are extremely showy and colorful, including a mix of white, purple, green and burgundy red. The blooms are also sweetly fragrant and attractive to butterflies.
Indian Paintbrush
Indian Paintbrush is a native wildflower that can be grown from seed in the home garden. It is perfect for a hummingbird or butterfly garden. Tubular flowers bloom in the summer with bright red, orange and yellow clusters atop tall stems. This plant actually prefers to grow in rocky or sandy soil and is found growing naturally along bluffs, hillsides and other dry places. Indian paintbrush is the larval host plant for several species of butterflies and moths.

Celebrate Arbor and Earth Day
By Ken Striplin Santa Clarita City Manager
“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” – John Muir
As we transition into a new season, I am honored to share our community’s ongoing efforts to seek innovative ways to protect and beautify our environment. This year we will celebrate both National Arbor Day and Earth Day with our annual Neighborhood Cleanup event on Saturday, April 27.
The annual Neighborhood Cleanup provides an opportunity for our community to unite and make a positive impact by cleaning up right where we live, a much-anticipated tradition each year. During registration, volunteers will have the option to select one of three drive-through locations to visit, between the hours of 8 and 11 a.m., to collect bags and gloves for their cleanup efforts on the day of the event.
The act of community members coming together to pick up litter and clean their local environ-
ment demonstrates collective responsibility and care for the planet. This cleanup event not only results in immediate improvements in the aesthetics of our neighborhoods, but also fosters a sense of unity and pride among our residents. Engaging in community clean-ups can raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage sustainable practices, such as recycling and waste reduction. All of these factors help contribute to a cleaner and greener City for all residents to enjoy.
In light of Santa Clarita’s extraordinary dedication to environmental conservation, we are thrilled to announce our receipt of the Tree City USA award for an impressive 34 consecutive years. To commemorate Arbor Day and our beautiful trees, participants of the Neighborhood Cleanup will receive a free bag of mulch and a 1-gallon drought-resistant plant, while supplies last. Additionally, we will host a ceremonial tree planting at Valencia Heritage Park at 10 a.m.
Another exciting event on the horizon is the 20th Annual Bike to Work Challenge, happening from Monday, May 13, through Friday, May 17. I encourage all of our local businesses to motivate their employees to join this eco-friendly commute. Participants will have the opportunity to win fantastic raffle prizes, including gift cards and even a brand-
new bike! Businesses with the highest participation percentage in their size category will win a free lunch for all who joined in on the fun. Join us at the pit stops on Thursday, May 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. for refreshments and camaraderie.
These events are just a glimpse of our ongoing efforts to maintain Santa Clarita’s picturesque environment. I encourage you to explore everything Green Santa Clarita has to offer by visiting GreenSantaClarita.com or following us on Facebook and now on Instagram @GreenSantaClarita. Interested in participating in the Bike to Work Challenge or the Neighborhood Cleanup community event? Find more information at GreenSantaClarita.com/ Events. Together, let’s continue to make Santa Clarita a vibrant and sustainable community.

e’re told Guy Ritchie’s slam-bang WWII thriller “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is “based on recently declassified files of the British War Department, and inspired by true events,” and there’s further confirmation of that when we see black-andwhite photos of the real-life heroes portrayed in the story. All well and terrific.
Still, I’m going to go out on a particularly sturdy limb and guess that the actual ultra-secret combat group
brought to cinematic glory by some of the most attractive humans on the planet, including Eiza Gonzalez, Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson and Henry Golding, were most likely not offering constant comedic banter while they were pulling off a mission so insanely unconventional, so incredibly daring, so madcap in its madcappery (I know that’s not a word but it SHOULD be), that they could make a movie about it. This is a Guy Ritchie action-comedy through and through, which means it’s going to be a stylish, cartoonishly violent, slick and relatively mindless popcorn movie. We’ll take it.

Adapted from Damien Lewis’ book “Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of World War II” and featuring stunning visuals from location shooting in the beautiful city of Antalya, Turkey, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is a fantastic blending of some basic facts and a whole lot of fictionalization, including shuffling of the timeline.
In the “Ministry” world, a beleaguered Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) approves an off-the-books Naval Intelligence operation designed to sink the cargo ships that are providing essential supplies to the German U-boats that are destroying the Brits, controlling the North Atlantic and essentially blocking the Americans from joining the Allied Forces at sea. Dubbed “Operation Postmaster,” it’s so risky and so outside the normal rules of warfare that if the recruits for the mission are caught, they’re going to prison.
The Naval Intelligence division is headed by Brigadier Gubbins, aka “M” (Cary Elwes), who is aided by Freddie Fox’s Ian Fleming — yes, THAT Ian Fleming. They enlist the services of the notorious and quite dangerous Gus March-Phillipps (Cavill), who assembles a squad that includes the actress-singer-markswoman Marjorie Stewart (Gonzalez); the Nazi-despising, one-man wrecking crew Anders Lassen, aka “The Danish Hammer” (Ritchson); the Irish sailor Henry Hayes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin); the crafty master planner Geoffrey Appleyard (Alex Pettyfer) and the demolitions expert Freddy Alvarez (Golding).
Off they go on their “Mission: Impossible” a la “Inglorious Basterds,” which lands them in the Spanish port of Fernando Po, off West Africa, where the Italian supply ship Duchessa is moored. That’s the target. In Fernando Po, we meet the undercover comms expert Richard Heron (Babs Olusanmokun), who runs the casino where all are welcome (name-check to “Casablanca”), and the obligatory Sweating Sneering Loathsome Nazi Commandant, one Heinrich Luhr (Til Schweiger). It’s a terrific cast, and everyone seems to be having a great time assuming cliched but quite entertaining roles.
With a justified running time of two hours, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” finds room for just about everyone in the ensemble to have a showcase moment. One highlight is when Marjorie slips into a femme fatale dress and sings a sultry version of “Mack the Knife” in both English and German to keep the Nazis occupied while her colleagues are running all over the harbor and executing their ridiculously complicated plan.
Of course, complications ensue, and there’s a call to abort the mission, but these wisecracking rogues aren’t about to start taking orders, right? They’re having too much fun blowing things up and dispatching Nazis in creatively gruesome fashion. It’s ungentlemanly, but also quite heroic, and devilishly good fun.

QWhatever happened to the actress who starred in “Cold Case”? I haven’t seen her in anything since it ended.
— H.C.
AThe CBS crime-proceduraldrama series “Cold Case” had a very successful seven-season run from 2003-2010. It didn’t spawn off any “Cold Case” franchises — like “CSI,” “Law & Order” and the “Chicago” shows have — but it might be returning with a new cast and a new setting. The original series was set in Philadelphia and starred Kathryn Morris and Danny Pino, but the new version could be set in the Southwestern United States.
Morris has been working steadily ever since the series ended, just not

in anything as long-running. Her last regular series was “Reverie,” a sci-fi drama that only lasted one season on NBC. She recently starred in the comedy film “Hayseed,” which you can find on Amazon Prime Video. But next up for her is the thriller “From Embers,” an indie film co-starring Matthew Morrison (“Glee”) and Kara Wang (“Top Gun: Maverick”).
QAre they really bringing back
“Melrose Place” with Heather
BookTrib’s Bites
Locklear? How is she doing since her troubles from a few years back?
—J.F.
AIt’s still in the development stages, but yes, another reboot of “Melrose Place” is on the way. According to Entertainment Weekly, “when one of their dearest friends dies suddenly, the OG residents of ‘Melrose Place’ gather to honor the deceased.” But once the reunion kicks off, it “uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances … and reveals new secrets.”
You might remember that there was another attempted reboot of the show back in 2009, but it was canceled after one season. It had a mostly new cast of twentysomethings and starred Katie Cassidy, but this new reboot reunites members of the original cast. Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton and Daphne Zuniga are all reportedly returning, with more likely on the way.
As for Locklear, there were articles last July that stated she was reentering rehab for alcohol abuse, but there’s been no negative press since then. The fact that CBS Studios is willing to employ her for this new project means she’s likely back on her feet again.

Have you ever made an important decision with total confidence, only to see it become a complete disaster? Why do we frequently make crucial decisions based on false confidence and wishful thinking? —S.A.
AThe “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off “Station 19,” which follows first responders in Seattle, actually has great ratings for its new, later time slot. So, it’s surprising that it’s being canceled after its current seventh season. Fans and critics alike are saying that it’s thriving under new showrunners Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige.
There’s no word on it being shopped around to streaming platforms, but many shows have been saved this way. Could it be another “Lucifer” or”Manifest”? Both are examples of series that were given the boot by their original networks due to low ratings, only to thrive when scooped up by the streaming giant Netflix.
“Station 19” executive producer Shonda Rhimes also has a development deal with Netflix, so this theory is not far-fetched. Keep your fingers crossed that it happens!

Frankenstein
By Daniel A. Olivas
The latest novel from critically acclaimed author (and attorney) Daniel A. Olivas is a thought-provoking retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic. Olivas’s protagonist, known only as the man, has been brought back to life to work as a paralegal in a futuristic world plagued By labor shortages. He doesn’t remember his past. The man’s search for identity intensifies as he falls for Faustina, a partner at a Pasadena law firm.
Author Orlando Ortega-Medina said: “This important novel is at once frightening and humorous, and I found myself laughing out loud more than once as Olivas cleverly delivered his cautionary message, served with a basket of fresh baked pan dulce.” Actor Thom Rivera narrates the audiobook. What is Parkinson’s disease?
Who hasn’t tapped fingers on a desk with anxiety or shook a leg under a table awaiting some sort of news? These motor impulses may seem involuntary, but they largely are under the control of the individual. For a portion of the population, fidgeting and tremors are out of their control, and are hallmarks of a movement disorder called Parkinson’s disease.
The Parkinson’s Foundation says Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects 10 million people worldwide. It is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects the dopamine-producing neurons in an area of the brain called the substantial nigra.
Since PD affects the nervous system, various parts of the body controlled by nerves can be impacted by the disease. Symptoms often start slowly and may be virtually undetectable to the average person. The Mayo Clinic says the first symptoms may be a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. Stiffness or slowing of movement also can be an early marker of the disease. Some people with PD may begin to have expressionless faces and speech may become soft or slurred. Symptoms worsen as the condition progresses.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke identify these four primary symptoms of PD, though it should be noted that everyone experiences symptoms differently.
Tremor Shaking often begins in a hand, although a foot or the jaw may be first affected. One tremor characteristic of PD is a rhythmic back-and-forth motion that may involve the thumb and forefinger and appear as “pill rolling.” It is most obvious when the hand is at rest.
Rigidity Muscle stiffness and resistance to movement affects many people with PD. The muscles remain constantly tense and contracted so that a person aches or feels stiff. This rigidity can become obvious when another person tries to move the individual’s arm, which will only
move in short, jerky movements known as “cogwheel.”
Bradykinesia This is a slowing down of spontaneous and automatic movement. Activities that were once easily performed now take much longer. There often is a decrease in facial expression, called “masked face.” A person with PD may not move his or her arms while walking.
Postural instability This impaired balance and change in posture can increase the risk of falls. Postural instability also may affect walking gait. Someone with PD may appear to be shuffling.
The cause of PD remains unknown. Scientists believe a combination of genetic and environmental factors are at the root of the disease. There is no cure for PD, although there are treatment options that may help alleviate some symptoms. Currently there is no treatment to slow the progression of PD.
The Mayo Clinic says changes occur in the brains of people with PD. Notably there is the presence of clumps of substances called Lewy bodies. These Lewy bodies often show a widespread protein called alpha-synuclein, which cells can’t break down. Researchers have found alpha-synuclein in the spinal fluid of people who later develop PD.
The Parkinson’s Foundation says people with PD take domaminergic medications to replace missing dopamine in the brain. This helps to treat various symptoms. Ongoing research into PD has led researchers to find ways to identify biomarkers for PD that can lead to earlier diagnoses and more tailored treatments.
Various conditions can produce symptoms similar to PD. It is best to discuss any concerns with a doctor.
A consultation with a neurologist likely will be recommended. With the right treatment and support, someone with PD can still live a quality life for years after diagnosis. (MC)

Possible Causes of Low Energy in Dogs
Many dog breeds love to get outdoors and run. Dogs’ love of activity endears them to millions of animal lovers, and it’s one of the first distinctions people make between canines and other popular pets, such as cats.
It’s not uncommon for dogs to look for a place to lay down and relax after a play session. And certain dog breeds, such as English bulldogs, tend to be less physically active than others. However, low energy levels throughout much of the day and an unwillingness to get up and run around could be signs of something serious in dogs that typically embrace physical activity.
The United Kingdom-based People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals notes that lethargy in dogs may indicate a host of problems. Identifying the cause of low energy in dogs can be the first step toward helping man’s best friend get back to being his or
her energetic self.
Potential Causes of Lethargy
The PDSA notes that various medical conditions can contribute to low energy in dogs. A veterinarian should be consulted immediately if a dog’s energy levels suddenly dip. That’s because certain issues that compromise canine’s energy levels could prove fatal if left untreated.
Infections are a potential cause of lethargy in dogs. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, canine distemper is a serious disease caused by infection with the canine distemper virus. Vaccination
can prevent canine distemper, but dogs that are not vaccinated can suffer a range of symptoms, including lethargy, if they are infected with the virus.

Flower Essence Remedy Saves Your Pet From Summer Stress
Does your pet race for the nearest corner, or hide under the bed when a thunderstorm strikes? Does he or she panic when it’s time to get in the car, or when home alone for an extended time? Weather, travel, and separation are just a few of the possible causes of stress in pets.
Pet stress is a common problem that leaves many pet owners puzzled and searching for solutions. However, homeopathic products that relieve stress in people can have a similar effect in pets. In a survey conducted by Wakefield Research, well over half say they would use a natural, herbal or homeopathic product to relieve their own stress, and more than half of them say they would offer such products to their pets, while 44% said they would use natural remedies for themselves and their pets.
Bach Rescue Remedy Pet drops are a safe, simple option for relieving many types of stress in pets. The homeopathic formula is designed for use before, during and after a potentially stressful event, such as thunderstorms, fireworks, visits to the vet and groomer or a trip on an airplane.
Bach Rescue Remedy Pet contains a blend of five
flower essences selected for their stress-relieving properties:
Cherry Plum for composure & holding back on impulses
Clematis for livelier, focused behavior when inattentive
Impatiens for calm & composure when lacking self-control
Rock Rose for courage during times of panic or terror
Star of Bethlehem for easing after effects of trauma or mistreatment
Formulated with just flower essences, vegetable glycerin, and water, Bach Rescue Remedy Pet drops are free of sedatives, CBD/hemp, sugar and artificial flavors and colors. One dose (four drops) can be given with food, treats or water as often as needed, and used alongside other pet health and wellness products including prescription medications.
“It’s important to anticipate the stress your pets may feel in certain situations and get out ahead of it,” says Cathy Madson, a pet expert at Preventive Vet and spokesperson for Bach Rescue Remedy Pet.
“We all know what will be happening the evening of July 4th, which means we can be proactive in reducing noise-related stress. I recommend offering Bach Rescue Remedy Pet starting several days in advance in your pet’s water, on treats or directly in the mouth to begin the calming effect before the fireworks ever begin,” she advises.
“This also holds true for preparing for an impending thunderstorm, grooming or vet visit, leaving them home alone or while traveling.”

Pets and Mental Health
Pets generally may seem like carefree animals with nary a worry, but the truth is that companion animals may suffer from many of the same mental health issues that affect humans.
ASPCA® Pet Insurance says that pets experience certain mental health issues, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behaviors and fears or phobias. Some pets also experience depression, with similar symptoms of social withdrawal, lethargy, loss of interest in food or activities and more. Some animals are predisposed to mental health conditions. For exam-
ple, small dog breeds generally are more inclined to exhibit signs of anxiety. Other pets develop mental health issues over time.
Compulsive behaviors may start out as a way for an animal to self-soothe during a fearful event or trauma, such as licking a toy or at paws. But these behaviors can become harmful, repetitive actions that may cause physical health problems.
If a pet is acting out of character or is displaying behaviors that are concerning, pet owners should seek the advice of the animal’s veterinarian. (MC)

Sweet Doggie Dreams?
It can be disconcerting to new dog owners when they discover their pooches whimpering, shaking or seemingly crying in their sleep. Although there may be some rare instances when this behavior is linked to pain and distress, by and large it is a natural response in many animals when they doze off. Although there is no exact way to measure what is going on in the pup’s mind, experts like Dr. Bonnie V.G. Beaver, DVM, author of Canine Behavior Insights, says the main reason that dogs produce noises in their sleep is that they are probably dreaming during the REM phases in their sleep cycles.
Dogs, just like humans, have the potential for vivid dreams while sleeping, as evidenced by looking at dogs’ brain waves during REM sleep. During these phases, dogs may show movement like wagging their tails, twitching their paws, fluttering their jowels, or making noises like whimpers. In some cases, dogs also may
bark while sleeping, says PetMD. Pet owners should rest assured that very likely these vocalizations and movements are completely normal. However, if they are new behaviors, it could be worth a discussion with a veterinarian. Also, new pet owners should know that a dog who makes noise while napping, may also do so during the night, and should not be overly concerned if they are woken from bed by pet noises. The general consensus is to simply let the pooch be as he or she works through those REM stages. (MC)

How to Tackle Spring Cleaning, Even When You Have Pets
The idea of giving your home a thorough cleaning each spring is very appealing, but can also be overwhelming. It may even seem impossible, given today's busy lifestyles, active children — and especially pets. You may love your pets, but the fur and sftains they leave behind make it even more challenging to keep your home as clean as you'd like.
To get you started, the experts at Libman Company, manufacturer of household cleaning products made in the U.S.A. since 1896, offer these helpful spring cleaning tips that can even conquer the messes your beloved pets may create.
1. Plan first
To avoid feeling overwhelmed, develop a plan that takes into account the time, energy and tools you need to get the job done.
Consider setting aside a weekend or two, so you'll have plenty of time. Di-
vide your home into zones, addressing the most frequently used areas of your home first, like the entryway, kitchen or bathrooms. Make sure to enlist help from your family!
Pro tip For multi-story homes, have a set of cleaning supplies/equipment on each floor, saving you from lugging mops and brooms up and down stairs.
2. Use the best tools
Trying to clean with old, worn-out brooms or mops adds time and frustration to your task. Instead, make cleaning easier with tools expertly made for the job.
For example, Libman's PetPlus Angle Broom with Dustpan is specially designed to tackle pet hair, dander, litter box dust and tracked-in dirt. The all-surface broom fibers remove over 99% of dust, dirt and hair in one sweep, with over 137,000 6-inch-long split-tip fibers that attract and hold pet hair. Together with the 12.5-inch wide dustpan with 1.5-inch built-in
"teeth" to help remove hair, dirt and debris from broom fibers, this is the perfect combo to help you clean up after pets.
For carpeted floors and upholstered furniture, use a vacuum cleaner designed for pet hair. Make sure to frequently empty the canister or change the bag, as fur quickly clogs up any vacuum, making it less effective.
3. Do a quick de-clutter
It's easier to address chores like mopping and dusting after clearing away miscellaneous items. Walk through target areas with trash/recycling bags first, removing items that need to be discarded. Then use a box or basket to collect things that belong in other rooms. Kids can help with this task, looking for items that belong in their rooms. Before you know it, your surfaces will be clearer and ready for deep cleaning.
4. Start high
Start cleaning at the top - otherwise you could dislodge dust, pet hair and cobwebs to dirty your newly cleaned floors. For each room, tackle ceiling fans or light fixtures before walls or windows. Then clean horizontal sur-

Bach Rescue Remedy Pet drops can be used by dogs, cats, horses, birds, rabbits and lizards of all ages, weights and breeds. The duration of stress relief depends on the pet and the situation. Stress relief for sudden situations, such as neighborhood fireworks, may be immediate, while relief from separation anxiety may take longer. For extended
faces like tables and shelves, saving floors for last.
Once you get to the floors, you'll be ready to put your new Libman broom and mop to work to easily remove pet hair and other debris.
5. Set yourself up for success
To preserve your newly cleaned rooms and floors, consider adding high-quality mats for inside and outside entries, easy-to-access waste bins or recycling containers and/or a basket system for items that need relocating. Planning ahead will make next season's cleaning that much easier!
Pro tip: Designate an area for regular pet brushing (or visit a groomer), especially during shedding seasons. This can reduce the fur ending up all over your house, and will keep your pets looking and feeling great.
With a solid plan and effective tools, spring cleaning can be a pleasure, and your whole family — including the four-legged memberswill enjoy the results even more.

LOW ENERGY
Continued from page 13
Obesity is another potential cause of lethargy in dogs. The PDSA notes that overweight dogs tend to move around less, so pet owners may need to alter pets’ diets and exercise routines to help them lose weight and become more physically active. Overweight dogs are at an elevated risk of developing diabetes, which the PDSA notes is one of a handful of hormonal issues, including Cushing’s disease and hypothyroidism, that also can cause low energy in dogs. Each issue is serious and dog owners are urged to work with their veterinarians to help dogs lose weight.
Dogs also can suffer from heart disease, which can cause low energy. PetMD notes that many dogs develop heart disease as they age. The most common forms of heart disease in dogs are heart valve disease, myodcardial (heart muscle) disease, heartworm disease, and arrhythmia.
Heart disease in dogs affects blood flow and makes it hard for the heart to pump blood, which can make dogs tired.
Additional causes of low energy in dogs include anemia, kidney disease and liver disease. Certain medications also can cause low energy in dogs, so it’s vital that pet owners discuss potential side effects of any medicine prescribed to their dogs.
Low energy in dogs can be a warning sign of various issues. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarians immediately if dogs exhibit signs of low energy. (MC)

How to Determine How Much House You Need
Potential home buyers typically have lists of requirements they would like to find in a new home. Although there are many features that are universally appreciated, certain elements may appeal to particular buyers more than others. For example, a swimming pool may be coveted by active families, but may not be as desirable to retirees looking for less upkeep.
Size is consideration that merits significant attention. The mantra “bigger is better” is well known, but homes with significant square footage may not be ideal for all buyers. “How much home do I really need?” is an important question for buyers to ask themselves before they embark on their home-buying journeys.
Here’s how buyers can identify how much house they need.
How many occupants will be living in the home?
The first consideration in home size is the number of residents. Rocket Mortgage says a good rule of thumb is to give each person 600 square feet of space. So that means a family of four would ideally live in a home that is 2,400-square feet, while a couple may be fine in a 1,200-square foot-home.
Number of Rooms
Generally speaking, the more rooms in a home, the larger the house. Potential buyers should identify rooms they feel are essential. While formal dining rooms once were de rigueur, they largely fell out of favor in recent years in lieu of open floor plans. The more rooms you need, the larger a home should be.
Potential Life Changes
It’s important to consider life changes on the horizon, and buyers should decide if they want to move as a result of those changes or if they want to set down strong roots and stay in one home. For example, a starter home may be perfect for newlyweds, but the space may be too tight when kids come along. Also, those who anticipate caring for a parent in the future may want a home that will accommodate an extra resident in the years ahead.
Tiny House Movement
The trend to live in very small houses has gained popularity in recent years. Many people have chosen to live with less and downsize to diminutive homes. Most “tiny” homes are less than 400-square
feet and are not much bigger than some owner’s suites in larger homes. There are merits to small homes, and that includes a small environmental impact, less clutter, financial advantages, and other perks like spending more time outdoors.
Housing Budget
Sometimes how much house a person needs comes down to how much he or she can afford. Small homes tend to be less expensive than large ones. However, even small homes in urban areas or those close to the water or other attractive amenities could still cost quite a bit.
Housing size is a personal preference that potential buyers must consider when they are shopping around. (MC)
Understanding the Basics of Fertilizing a Lawn
Spring marks the return of lawn and garden season. Lawns often bear the brunt of winter’s wrath, so spring is a great time to nurse them back to health, and fertilizing can be an essential component of that process. Fertilizing a lawn can be intimidat-
ing. An array of fertilizers, with each seemingly designed to address a different issue, can make homeowners’ heads spin when visiting their local lawn and garden center. However, fertilizing is a very simple task that any homeowner can tackle. In fact, fears about fertilizing are often unfounded and can be overcome with some basic knowledge of the process.
the lawn is important because that will indicate when to fertilize.
fit their lawns.
Water before fertilizing The experts at Scotts® recommend a good watering a few days prior to fertilizing a lawn. Such an approach ensures the soil is ready to accept the fertilizer once it’s applied.
Survey the lawn to identify which spreader to use A small yard or a thriving lawn with only a few bald or unsightly patches may not need a full application of fertilizer. In such instances, a hand spreader can suffice. For larger lawns and areas, a broadcast spreader is the ideal option. Spreaders have multiple settings, and the fertilizer package will indicate which setting to utilize when using the product.
Identify which type of grass is in the yard The home improvement experts at HGTV note that turfgrass is divided into two categories: cool-season grass and warm-season grass. A local lawn and garden center can help homeowners identify which type of grass is in the yard, and this often depends on location. Fescue, bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are some examples of cool-season grasses, while Bermuda, bahia, St. Augustine, and zoysia are considered warm-season grasses. Identifying which type of grass is in
Test the soil prior to buying fertilizer The lawn experts at Pennington¨ note that a simple soil test can reveal soil pH and phosphorous and potassium levels. Soil tests can be purchased at most home improvement stores and lawn and garden centers, and they can help homeowners determine which fertilizer will most bene-
Follow the instructions carefully Detailed instructions are typically provided on fertilizer product packaging. Once homeowners have identified and purchased the product they need, they can simply follow the instructions on the packaging, including how and when to water after application, which can make fertilizing less intimidating.
Fertilizing in spring can help a lawn recover from the previous summer and winter, ensuring it’s lush and green when summer entertaining season arrives. (MC)

Few medical conditions can be as uncomfortable as radiculopathy, commonly referred to as a pinched nerve. Anyone can suffer from a pinched nerve, which is why it behooves people from all walks of life to understand this painful yet often preventable condition.

The medical experts at Cedars Sinai note that the spine is made up of bones called vertebrae. The spinal cord runs downward through the center of these bones, and nerve roots branch off the cord and go between each vertebra. A pinched nerve occurs when problems affect those nerve roots.
Where do pinched nerves occur?
Cedars Sinai notes that a pinched nerve is most likely to occur in the lower back. However, pinched nerves can affect other areas of the body, including the neck, arms and legs.
What are the symptoms of a pinched nerve?
People who have experienced radiculopathy may identify pain as the most notable symptom of a pinched nerve. Cedars Sinai notes such pain may manifest in different ways depending on which part of the body is affected. Pain-related signs of a
pinched nerve in the lower back include:
• Sharp pain in the back that may travel down to the feet
• Pain that worsens when sitting or coughing
• A pinched nerve in the neck may produce:
• Sharp pain in the arm
• Pain in the shoulder
• Feelings of numbers or pins and needles in the arm
• Worsening pain when the neck moves or the head turns
Additional symptoms of a pinched nerve include numbness of the skin and weakness in the leg or arm.
What are the risk factors?
Though anyone can experience a pinched nerve, various conditions can increase a person’s risk for radiculopathy. Such factors include, but are not limited to:
• Poor posture
• Poor body position: Crossing the legs when seated can pressure the spine and increase risk for a pinched nerve
• Herniated disc
• Slipped disc
• Arthritis in the spine: Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis can contribute to a narrowing of nerve openings and stiffness in the spine. Each of those conditions can increase pressure on the nerves, potentially leading to a pinched nerve
• Weight gain
• Pregnancy
• Post-surgery scar tissue: People who have previously had spinal injury might be at greater risk for a pinched nerve due to the formation of scar tissue that affects a nerve root along the spinal cord. Pinched nerves are painful but treatable. Individuals who suspect they are experiencing a pinched nerve are urged to contact a physician immediately. (MC)

Graduation Season
We are coming up on graduation season. According to a Young America’s Foundation commencement speaker survey, most speakers at college graduation ceremonies in 2023 had a “liberal perspective.” Out of 100 schools surveyed, an overwhelming 60 liberal speakers were identified, while only a single conservative voice made its way to the podium.
These are your people, Gary Horton, Lois Eisenberg and Thomas Oatway. You must be proud that our young people are getting such a well-rounded education.
How proud are you of the pro-Hamas liberal Democratic crowd that blocked bridges and chanted, “Death to Israel, Death to America?” Of course, these are almost exclusively young people. Where did they get their deranged, hateful ideas at such a young age?
First place I would look would be at the almost 100% liberal faculty at the colleges they attend. These are the professors who teach that America is divided into the oppressors and the oppressed, and has been that way since our Founding Fathers created our Constitution.
That, of course, is complete liberal nonsense. These same professors are saying that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. We know that is a vile lie and couldn’t be further from the truth. Israel is fighting for its very existence with the Palestinian-backed Hamas.
I will guarantee you that there were no MAGA supporters on those bridges chanting, “Death to Israel, Death to America.” MAGA supporters love our country and what it stands for. They won’t be in Chicago this summer causing violence at the Democratic National Convention. I will also guarantee you that the pro-Hamas demonstrators will be there en masse chanting their hateful chants and wreaking havoc on the Windy City.
How do I feel about these pro-Hamas demonstrators who held up emergency vehicles and prevented people from making their airline flights on time, while chanting their vile chants?
My first reaction was, “Throw them off the bridge.” Then I realized that solution was a bit harsh. Soon I had an epiphany: Arrest all of them. If they are here on a foreign visa, deport them immediately. If they are American citizens, give them a choice of jail time for sedition and treason, or send them to a Middle Eastern country of their choice where they will be praised for their anti-American, pro-Hamas stance.
This is not “America, Love it or Leave It.” This is, “If you hate America so much that you want it to die, find a better place and go there.”

ETHICALLY SPEAKING
Competition to Collaboration
By David Hegg
As Americans, we thrive on competition. Our economy is built on it, our love for sport demands it, and our addiction to winning depends on it. We compete for business, resources, attention, and even the best parking space. Cut us, and we bleed competition, so it is no wonder that we’ve foolishly come to allow competition to get out of hand in so many ways, in so many arenas, with so many devastating results.
I love to compete. In my younger years, I lived for athletic contests. Striving to win became a passion of mine. Yet, while I support competition as a foundational concept in our country, I believe that we are watching a new form of competition take hold all around us, withering our collective soul.
I’m talking about a kind of competition that tries to win the contest and ruin and destroy the opponent. Of course, we see this up close and personal in the political arena. It isn’t enough to win the vote and occupy the office. We also have to vilify the other side as a pre-emptive strike against the possibility that they may succeed in future elections. This makes the business of politics essentially an ongoing set of actions designed not to make America better but to continue the victory celebration. In the current political environment, winning means gaining an advantage in upcoming contests. But it surely ought to mean more than that.
In his book “The 17 Essential Qualities of a Team Player,” best-selling leadership guru John C. Maxwell describes three ways that people engage. First, there is competition. When we compete, we’re actually working against one another. There is active engagement to thwart our opponent’s efforts. In this kind of engagement, there is only one winner. When competition is the primary activity, we are in a win-lose situation.
The next level of engagement is cooperation. This exists when two or more people are involved in a common pursuit and realize they both gain if they work together. Maxwell describes this as “working alongside one another agreeably.” Such cooperation is essential in so many areas of life, including marriage and family, the workplace, and even on the freeway. We can make it a “win-win” situation when we cooperate rather than compete.
Most Americans would love to see cooperation become more widespread. We’d like to see our political leaders cooperate, our civic leaders dialogue more with community groups and businesses, and,
just generally, more cooperation than competition in finding solutions to society’s challenges.
However, as good as cooperation sounds, it is another way to define compromise. Cooperation doesn’t demand that I change my core beliefs; it only means finding a way to agree with my opponents. And while this may make for more courtesy and civil discourse, it only sometimes means the best solutions are found and implemented. Maxwell defines the best level of collaboration as “working with one another aggressively.” In competition, you or I win. In cooperation, you and I each win a little. But in collaboration, you win, and I win, and most importantly, the whole team or society wins.
Collaboration is an aggressive and intentional action that puts the best interests of the many above my own and may involve sacrifice. It demands that the mission take priority over personal ambition and recognition. Collaboration says, “What is best for the people is best, regardless of how it may affect my standing or that of my party.”
Collaboration prizes the idea that the person with the best idea wins. Collaboration is the best way for ideas to be brought to the surface and implemented well and quickly. But collaboration at its very core demands the twin virtues of humility and sacrifice.
Winning is the foundation of competition, but we all appreciate those who have learned the value of remaining humble in victory.
Collaboration demands humility. It does away with individual statistics and places value only on the final score. True collaborators enter the arena with the view that their ideas and solutions can be improved by the insights of others who share their desire for the best outcome. Further, they are ready to support the best idea regardless of who offers it or what it may take. This demands strong character, intentional humility, and a radical commitment to sacrifice anything that might keep the team from accomplishing its mission.
Let’s demand that our leaders become humble and self-sacrificing collaborators. Let’s demand that we take that path ourselves. Let’s make it a competition and see if we can award the victory wreath to those demonstrating the most significant collaboration ability. Then, we’ll all win.
