Sometimes, Moms Need a Time Out
Are you still looking for a way to spice up Mother’s Day? How about a timeout? “What?” you say.
Time-outs may be torturous for young children eager to get up and go, but alone time may sound like paradise to busy mothers. Moms who need a break during or after a long day (like Mother’s Day), may find such breaks restful and reenergizing.
You don’t need much time
A break doesn’t need to be extensive to be effective. Schedule around 30 minutes for the timeout. That’s just enough time to watch a sitcom, read a chapter in a book or enjoy a nice, steamy bath.

A National Restaurant Association survey finds that 40% of adults will use a restaurant to treat mom to a special Mother’s Day meal.
Mother’s Day was enshrined as a National Day of Observance in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that the second Sunday in May would be known Mother’s Day, making May 10, 1914 the first national Mother’s Day. This year is the 110th anniversary of national Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day brunch is a favorite way to treat mom to a special meal with entire families gathered to celebrate mom. What says Mother’s Day more than moms and mimosas?
However, post-pandemic prices, a shortage of help and the closure of numerous restaurants have only increased the pressure on restaurants to deliver memorable Mother’s Day brunches.
The National Restaurant Association urges dinners to pack patience and consideration when celebrating Mother’s Day at her favorite restaurant. Diners are urged to

Men’s Shorts
Men’s shorts have been named this summer’s most sought-after menswear item, with 17,7442 average monthly searches across the country. California, New York and Florida are searching for men’s shorts the most — with 21,958 searches in California; 15,508 in New York; and 12,233 in Florida per month.
Nobody wears men’s shorts better than Pedro Pascal. The beloved actor graced the Met Gala 2023 red carpet in a pair of black Valentino shorts styled with a blazing red trench coat and attention-grabbing black combat boots. In fact, as a result, searches for ‘men’s black shorts’ increased by 61% during the week of the Met Gala 2023, meaning that men’s black shorts could be the optimal style choice for this season.
Men’s bracelets
Men’s bracelets are the second most searched for menswear item. The accessory has 15,0893 average monthly searches across America.
Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are among the states searching for men’s bracelets the most. Illinois is searching for this item 6,567 times a month; New Jersey 5,708 times a month; and Pennsylvania 5,608 times a month.
Timothée Chalamet is one of the most fashionable men in Hollywood. So, it’s not surprising to have seen the world-famous actor wearing two beaded bracelets at Paris Fashion Week 2023, with searches for ‘men’s bracelets’ increasing by 122% in the same week. Chalamet styled two beaded bracelets alongside a leather-accented black bomber jacket and relaxed navy-blue joggers. This summer, people can wear men’s bracelets with similarly casual outfits, as well as accessorizing tailored suits for formal occasions.
Men’s Sunglasses
Men’s sunglasses take a bronze medal as the third most in-demand menswear item, with 14,4597 average monthly searches nationally.
Georgia, Michigan and Arizona show some of the highest interest men’s sunglasses — with 5,208 monthly searches in Georgia; 4,058 monthly searches in Michigan; and 3,050 monthly searches in Arizona.
Sunglasses are a summertime staple. Trending styles grace menswear outlets every year, so the trick is to find your favorites and stand out from the crowd. And in true rock ‘n’ roll style, Lenny Kravitz made a statement at the 2023 Oscars with his chunky, eye-catching black Saint Laurent shades.
Men’s Earrings
Men’s earrings are this summer’s fourth most sought-after menswear item. On average, this accessory is searched for 13,9767 times per month.
Among the states looking up men’s earrings the most; Ohio has 4,208 monthly searches; North Car-
olina has 4,067 monthly searches; and Virginia has 3,458 monthly searches.
Famous for their bold, fierce fashion statements, Lil Nas X captured the whole world’s attention at the Pre-Grammy Gala 2023. The academy award winning artist owned the red carpet by accessorizing a pink illusion suit with a pair diamond encrusted, heart shaped earrings.
Men’s Sandals
Lastly, men’s sandals are the fifth most searched for menswear item. The summertime shoe has 10,2978 average monthly searches across America. Massachusetts, Washington and Tennessee are among the states searching for men’s sandal the most — with 2,773 monthly searches in Massachusetts; 2,050 monthly searches in Washington; and 1,992 monthly searches in Tennessee. Sandals are perfect for the warmer weather. Comfortable and versatile, these shoes suit both smart and casual outfits, as well as everything in-between.
Tyler, The Creator wore pair of sports sandals while performing at Coachella 2023, styled with white socks, green cargo shorts, and a pink graphic shirt — and online searches for ‘socks and sandals’ increased by 270% one week later.
The States Most Interested in Men’s Fashion
The new research also uncovered the states most interested in men’s fashion by analyzing the search data in each state, comparing it against the population, and revealing the rate of searches per 100,000 residents.
New York is searching for men’s fashion the most, with 559 average monthly searches for menswear items per 100,000 residents.
In second place is New Jersey. On average, this northeastern state is searching for men’s fashion items 493 times a month per 100,000 residents.
This is followed by Massachusetts (460 average monthly searches), California (444 average monthly searches), and Illinois (437 average monthly searches).
A spokesperson at boohooMAN has commented: “The new study has highlighted the most popular menswear items of this summer by analyzing online search data. In turn, consumers will know what to expect this season. Men’s shorts are the most sought-after menswear item, with the majority of states searching for this item the most, followed by bracelets, sunglasses, earrings, and sandals.
“These trending styles can be influenced by upcoming events, such as red carpets and music festivals with flared silhouettes and bright colors taking center stage this season.”

Celebrate 45 Years of Santa Clarita Dodger Day!

As a longtime Dodger fan, some of my favorite memories have been taking my family to Chavez Ravine to enjoy a game. From the sound of the thousands of fans cheering in the stadium, to enjoying garlic fries and a Dodger Dog, baseball in Los Angeles will always be one of my favorite summer activities.
This year, Santa Clarita Dodger Day is celebrating its 45th year and residents can cheer on the boys in blue as they take on the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, June 1, at 7:10 p.m. Whether you are an avid Dodger fan or it’s your first game, this is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a night out with friends and family, especially after the Dodger lineup has added baseball greats like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
This game is also very important to our community, as it is Tyler Glasnow Bobblehead Night. Glasnow was born and raised in Santa Clarita, and
was a star player on the Hart High School baseball team. The right-handed pitcher was drafted out of high school in 2011 to the Pittsburgh Pirates, before eventually making it back home to be a starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a tightknit community, I am proud that our residents can come together to celebrate our local Santa Clarita native, as he plays among the best baseball players in the world.
To make sure our attendees can get one of the Tyler Glasnow bobblehead giveaways, the City is offering residents a ride to the game by taking one of our Santa Clarita Transit buses. The Santa Clarita Dodger Day Shuttle will pick up residents from two locations in Santa Clarita. The pick
up locations will be the McBean Regional Transit Center, located at 24375 Valencia Boulevard, with a departure time of 4 p.m., and the Via Princessa Metrolink Station, located at 19201 Via Princessa, with a departure time of 4:20 p.m.
The buses will depart Dodger Stadium to return to Santa Clarita 45-minutes after the game concludes. Tickets for the bus can be purchased for $3 per person and can be paid for in cash, with a TAP card or through the Token Transit mobile app upon boarding the bus.
With each game ticket purchased, attendees will also receive a Santa Clarita Dodger Day foam finger, sponsored by Henry Rodriguez State Farm Insurance Agent. Residents can bring these to the game, where they sit will fellow community members in the stands cheering on the boys in blue!

Travolta Clearly Still Has Some Star Power in the Tank

We’re nearly 50 years out from John Travolta’s meteoric rise to from sitcom player to movie stardom with “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease” and “Urban Cowboy” in the 1970s, and just a week ago we saw Travolta reuniting with Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and other cast members to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction,” and while Travolta may never again reach the heights of those eras, he keeps on working and remains a compelling screen presence.
At 70, Travolta still exudes a cer-
tain movie-star twinkle in the heist thriller “Cash Out,” which plays like
a solid B-movie riff on “The Thomas Crown Affair,” with Travolta and Kristin Davis turning in fine work playing lovers who are on opposite sides of the law — or are they? No need to oversell what we have here. Directed in solid fashion by someone listed only as “Ives,” with a zippy, if at times preposterous, script from Dipo Oseni and Doug Richardson that might not totally hold up under scrutiny, “Cash Out” has a certain undeniable style, as personified by the use of Frank Sinatra’s “You Go to My Head” over the opening credits.
In what amounts to a prologue, Travolta’s Mason Goddard and Davis’ Amelia Deckard pose as a husband and wife who, along with Mason’s regular crew, pull off a daring heist of a $20 million sports car. All goes according to plan — until it’s revealed Amelia is actually undercover with the FBI. Mason and his gang barely escape, and Mason says

that’s it, he’s out of the game for good and ready to enjoy a few beers and a quiet retirement.
That all changes when Mason’s idiot younger brother Shawn (played by 48-year-old Lukas Haas, so I guess Shawn is Mason’s MUCH younger brother) comes up with an ill-conceived plan to rob a bank — a plan that seems destined to result in the capture or deaths of Shawn and the rest of the crew, which includes the amiable Anton (played by the rapper Quavo), the hot-headed Hector (Noel Gugliemi) and the obligatory computer hacker, known as Link (played by Natali Yura, who gives off major Aubrey Plaza vibes).
Mason arrives on the scene just a little too late to put a stop to Shawn’s scheme, as the crew has taken hostages while Shawn is forcing the smarmy bank manager, Georgios (Swen Temmel), to open the vault so he can access a very specific safe deposit box containing … well, you know, containing one of those Incredibly Valuable MacGuffins that will fetch tens of millions for Shawn and the crew.

Turns out Shawn has picked the wrong person to rob, which results in the feds swarming on the scene, with none other than Amelia as the lead negotiator, which is going to be kind of awkward, given Mason and Amelia still clearly have feelings for one another. We settle in for a standard-issue heist movie, with graphics chronicling the passing hours, and a number of complications ensuing.
“Cash Out” is at its best when Travolta’s Mason is puzzling out the latest developments and trying to figure out a way to keep himself, his goofball brother and his beloved crew from being arrested or worse. The man who gave us Tony Manero, Danny Zuko, Vincent Vega and Chili Palmer still has some star power left in the tank.

1 medium red onion, halved, sliced lengthwise into 1/2”-thick wedges

In a small saucepan over medium heat, cook garlic and oil, stirring occasionally, until garlic is fragrant and softened, 5 to 7 minutes. Let cool slightly.

How to Erase Negative Self-Talk and Feel Better
It’s been four years since the collective trauma of the pandemic created widespread grief, anxiety and isolation, but the psychological wounds of this period have not fully healed.
The American Psychological Association reports continued elevated rates of anxiety and depression among Americans, and mental health experts say that negative self-talk plays a large role in these conditions and other psychological issues. The good news? Individuals can work on subtracting a harmful inner monologue from the equation.
“Simple tools can help people break the cycle of negative self-talk and find some inner peace,” says Elizabeth Scott, PhD, a wellness coach, health educator and author of “8 Keys to Stress Management.”
That’s why Pilot Corporation of America (Pilot Pen) is supporting the Erase Self-Negativity Initiative in partnership with key mental health and wellness experts, including Dr. Scott, and with guidance from America’s largest grassroots mental health organization, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
As part of the initiative, Dr. Scott and NAMI have created a guided exercise to help individuals begin their journey toward erasing the disempowering influence that negative selftalk has on their lives. The exercises include writing down the negative beliefs one holds about themself and then destroying or erasing the writing, a practice that has been found by research to be helpful in minimizing those beliefs.
“Simply externalizing these nega-
tive thoughts empowers us to rewrite our narrative and opens the door to giving ourselves more grace,” says Dr. Scott.
Dr. Scott stresses that similar to maintaining physical health, consistency is key with mental health. This is why every April 10 is recognized as National Erase Self-Negativity Day and the initiative will use the 10th of each month, as a day to start or revisit the writing exercise and reflect on personal progress.

Although we can possibly experience more cloud cover and maybe even a surprise shower, it’s likely we are done with the measurable rainfall so it’s time to start conserving water and getting the most out of every drop. Sunshine will be growing stronger, so now is also the best time to get swimming pools and water features into top shape for the coming heat.

Sprinklers don’t need to be as active as they will in a month or two, so check your timers and adjust them as the weather changes. Then, rather than leaving water times on longer, add more short-watering periods following a rest of at least 15 to 20 minutes between so the first watering has time to penetrate into the soil.
The idea is to allow water to sink down. And getting projects built now before the summer means you will be ready for the heat to the bottom of plant root systems, not just wet the surface of the soil.

There’s nothing that can’t be planted at this time of year except maybe some of the cool season vegetables. Artichokes are starting to crop and early strawberries are fruiting. Get those peppers, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, corn, squash, eggplant and other warm-season plants into the ground now so you can start harvesting in a month or two.
You can plant pumpkin seeds starting now and during the next month. They should be the last seeds to go in the garden if you want to harvest them closer to Halloween rather than in August or September.
This is the end of the best season for planting California native plants. However, you will have to give even the tough natives plenty of water over the summer until they can establish drought-resistant root systems.
✓ If you have compost from your own pile, this is a good time to dig it into the soil. You can also top dress your soil with compost as a moisture-holding barrier that will help roots stay cooler in heat.
If you are buying it in bags, you might want to consider buying or building a compost bin so you can make your own for free. Locate it far enough from the house that you won’t be attracting rodents to any structures, but close enough that you’ll still be willing to walk the distance to use it.

If you have asthma, you know that symptoms can come on quickly, then worsen. The things that make them do that are called triggers. An important part of managing asthma is knowing your triggers at home, work, school or while you’re outdoors.
A health care provider can help you figure that out, then you can take steps to avoid those triggers and breathe easier.
At Home
Because asthma is usually due to allergies, triggers are often allergens, or things that cause allergic reactions. Allergens such as pet dander, dust mites, pests and smoke can make asthma symptoms worse in some people, and for others, even trigger an asthma attack.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) suggests that it may be helpful to combine a few different strategies to help reduce exposure to triggers.
People sensitive to dust can clean with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration vacuum and use mattress and pillow covers that prevent exposure to dust mites. If you’re sensitive to pests like cockroaches and rodents, consider integrated pest management, which involves removing and controlling pests through methods such as traps or poison. Avoiding tobacco smoke, including
secondhand smoke, can be especially helpful for some people with asthma.

Asthma is one of the leading reasons children miss school. At school, kids may be exposed to dust mites, pests and mold, which may be asthma triggers for some children.
Because children spend lots of time at school, it can be helpful for teachers, school nurses or coaches to know what to do if your child’s symptoms flare up. Team up with a health care provider to develop an asthma action plan and share it with trusted adults at your child’s school.

To Those Who Are Dealing in Death

But the one element that continues to afflict me in these protests is the news that American citizens are now shamelessly shouting “Death to America.”
“Death to America?” Really? I can only assume these men and women have no idea what that would actually mean. “Death to America?” Is it really their studied belief and ethical conviction that putting things right in this world will only come about with the annihilation of the United States of America?
I could go on to repeat the cogent argument that our country’s financial climate and freedoms have enabled them to attend their prestigious, expensive institutions and wage the protests that have, in some cases, shut down their campuses and canceled their graduation celebrations. But I have something else to say.
Those who wish death on anyone or any country don’t understand what they’re demanding because they don’t understand death. Death is a robber. It is a vile, wicked terrorist that comes to annihilate what is alive and precious. We all have experienced death’s treachery. Death has come and destroyed families by taking something we love too early, by sometimes ending life violently, and sometimes laughingly making certain we know that what we once had, held, loved and needed would never be ours again.
“Death to America” is not a cry for us to do better. It is not a request that we reconsider our ways. It is not meant to garner massive support to wage a campaign using the means set forth in our Constitution to make changes, institute reforms, bring justice to those in the wrong, or in some way amend and correct areas where
Those who proudly and boisterously call for “Death to America” ought to be ashamed and publicly shamed. While there may be reasons to protest, calling for the death of those you hold responsible is utterly irresponsible. I could never, in good conscience, call for the death of someone with whom I disagreed. Neither could I advocate for the death of a nation knowing that only a complete imbecile would consider that a group all thought and believed in lockstep.
I know what you’re thinking. “C’mon, Hegg, they were just using hyperbole to call attention to America’s role internationally.” Really? If that were the case, I would expect the students of Ivy League universities to have a better understanding of international relations and certainly better solutions to offer that might actually have merit.
I know the easiest thing to do when someone hurts my feelings, acts in a disrespectful or dangerous way, or disagrees with me is simply to cancel them. Right? But the easy way is never the most useful way to deal with differences. We are seeing the “cancel culture” everywhere. We’re seeing cancellation rather than meaningful confrontation, collaboration, and, eventually, cooperation.
“Death to America” is the easy way out. And the easy way, when it comes to the great complexity of our world, will never bring about a workable solution to our problems.
So, what is the solution? First, it is not to cancel these students or the necessity of higher education. In my business, I believe no one is beyond redemption. Second, when these students head home in a few weeks there will be some strong parents ready to correct their erroneous thinking and behavior. Second, I’m hoping that the names and activities of the students shouting “Death to America” find their way to those interviewing them for their first jobs. Nothing like consequences to change one’s ideology.
Lastly, I pray that Americans think carefully about how each of us is contributing to our future and do whatever to make sure Lincoln’s hope will be fulfilled, “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.”
