elcome to the first issue of signature Caribbean wedding magazine. My fascination with weddings began when I was a child; my mom was involved with planning weddings for family and friends. As far back as I can remember. I was a flower girl in more weddings than I can count. Growing in up rural St. Andrew, Jamaica, West Indies; weddings were much more traditional at that time. What sparked my interest was the special way wedding cakes were prepared, kept and handle, before the wedding day, like it was a precious gift to the bride and groom. After moving to New York, my parents started a limousine business in 1983, of course weddings were a major part of our bookings. After getting married in 1984 my husband and I became partners in the business. In 1988 after taking over the business we adadded tuxedo rentals and bridal accessories to the business, which we still currently own. In 1989, we also opened a high fashion shoe store, followed by a specialty boutique a year later. Its a great pleasure to be part of the wedding industry.

My enthusiasm as a child and experience as a business woman has given me the inspiration to start Signature Caribbean Wedding Magazine. With weddings being the grandest celebration of all, we will bring insight and inspiration. Whether it is country style weddings or small beach aairs, Caribbean Signature Wedding will bring the latest trends, ideas, and traditions of near and far. We welcome you to Signature Caribbean Wedding. To Share Dreams, Love, And Life, Johniest Wiltshire Daley.

Blazing New Trails, Setting New Traditions Shemeka Kim Peters, MSEd. CLPC

I

t was a long wait but I was finally engaged to my fiancé during Thanksgiving weekend last fall. As seen on TV, the first thing I knew I had to do was call my mom. I didn’t get the response that I was expecting. Not an automatic congratulations, I am so happy for you, etc…but “Did you bless the ring?.. Are you with the preacher now?” With the most important announcement in my life, the only thing that matter at the moment was whether or not I had followed the West Indian tradition of blessing the ring. I knew then that I needed to blaze new trails and set new traditions for myself and my new family. Not only for the wedding, but the new legacy we were building.

I presented this idea to my family and it was an insult. This was their opportunity to have a grand time. It was a hard battle but a compromise had to be made. If they wanted the big traditional wedding, then they would have to pay for it! With all the things that I had to balance, organize and manage during this time, the most challenging thing was dealing with my family. I knew what I was getting into when I agree to let them pay for the wedding: the expensive dress, large guest list, and don’t forget the black cake with the icing. It is important however for newly engaged couples to set the boundaries as to how much they are willing to compromise with family members in order to follow tradition. This is a time for you and your future spouse to paint the picture of how you want your future to look; a future so bright that you have to put on shades. ♥

Growing up Trinidadian-American, I have grown to love and respect the culture in which my family came from. At the same time, I am empowered by the knowledge, resources, and system that I have as an American. I am determined to live the American dream by having a family and financial freedom. My fiancé and I wanted not to only focus on a wedding day, but a marriage life. Our main goal was to have a “simple” wedding ceremony in order for us to save funds to purchase our first home. A destination wedding would be romantic and intimate to a close few selected individuals.
