CYA Pedestrian Corridor New Orleans, Louisiana 2014 NoMA Competition
Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
The development of the Ponchartrain Expressway in 1960 was a keystone for the future development of New Orleans. As the city has expanded, the highway overpass has become a main connection corridor between the Misssissippi River. However, the space underneath this corridor has been left dormant since the ďŹ nished development, now serving as a social barrier inundated with concrete parking spaces. Our proposal aims to create a cultural pedestrian corridor that responds to public necessity while connecting important civic landmarks within the city.

The upper and lower topography of the site is manipulated to create both grand and intimate social experiences throughout. Irregular forms reveal key components of the site progressively while framing historic buildings along the walkway. Performative and gallery spaces are located along edges within each block for pedestrian experience and ttrafďŹ c calming. Primary connections to the site are located along rail, bus, and existing pedestrian corridors.

002 The Joneses Reimagining Residency Decatur, Georgia 2014 Suburbia Transformed 3.0 Entry Design Team: Nathan Metzger, Kylie Aguar The Suburbia Transformed Competition aims to explore the aesthetics of landscape experience in an age of sustainability. Our proposal focused on four site issues to be addressed through this lens. The project site’s original condition included expansive concrete paving and primarily unmaintained front and back lawns. We designed to increase the performative aesthetics of the site, decreasing site runoff, utilizing on-site materials, and direct user interaction with the surrounding environment and plant material.

003 Layered Connections Riverfront Development Athens, Georgia Athens, Georgia has a pedestrian-centric view within the university campus and historic downtown districts. However, the large vehicular corridors that connect the outlying development areas have created a spatial disconnect from its natural resources. This concept utilizes the development boundary to the west of the North Oconee River as an access point for pedestrian connectivity to downtown Athens. This link between new and historic boundaries is realized through the redevelopment of old rail lines that travel through the city’s center.

The connections through the site are broken down into spatial and experiential zones. The bridge itself links the uppermost topography of the site and provides a point of destination for users experience. The connections along the North Oconee River serve as access points for pedestrians from each of the main road boundaries to the North and South . These connections set up space for active and passive recreation within the site. The determination of place links lower and upper topography and provides unique experiences through previously unused industrial inďŹ ll.

Woodland Run The experience of place within the Woodland Run moves users from the flat topography of the riverfront towards the road corridor to the site’s North. Development is limited to the boardwalk installation and invasive species mitigation to highlight the natural setting of the canopy trees and it’s tributary.
Floodplain Boardwalk The boardwalk is an experience of space and provides multiple views and linkages to the North Oconee River. The divisions between each walkway function as detention areas for floodplain control while developing specific spatial experiences in close proximity to one another.
Overlook The Overlook is a connection of space to the proposed urban infill site, located to the northwest of the project boundary. This access point runs along the imagined pedestrian axis of the urban infill, creating a point of discovery that brings users into the site’s southeastern connection to the river.

Bridge Connection
River Boardwalk Connection The bridge form borrows from a historic pedestrian bridge running parallel to the site’s north. The connections between the greenway and the city’s riverfront connect at two levels: one at the bridge level and one at Dudley Park. Both bridges offer access points to different circulation paths within the development.

004 Gradient Pedestrian Corridor Athens, Georgia College Avenue is the connector between two major roadways in downtown Athens, Georgia. It’s axis is the bridge between the university campus and it’s city. This plan design explores the transformation of this space into a pedestrian corridor. It’s focus is to blend materials from the historic commercial buildings to generate a new pattern of communication for its users.

This construction documentation focused on materiality as privacy, and how that can form a design strategy for public spaces. This patio extends from a commercial building, with parking south of the site. The specific material focused on is a copper composite, which is used to wrap and partially enclose the patio while providing visual definition between public and private spaces.
