THE PRESENT The optimum method and the most professional way of installing wood floors, is using elastic adhesives. Sika® created this concept of elastic wood floor bonding in the early 1990’s and it had its origins in the marine ship building industry. Teak boarded decks are used and preferred on various types of yachts, leisure cruisers and ocean liners. Many of these are bonded and caulked with Sika Marine elastic adhesive systems, which has now been done successfully for over thirty years. ADVANTAGES OF SIKA® AND EVERBUILD ELASTIC ADHESIVES FOR WOOD FLOORS Sound Dampening ■■ Reduces transmitted and airborne sound ■■ Improved walking comfort, better for our joints Even Stress Distribution ■■ Minimized perimeter joints ■■ Larger surface areas without joints ■■ Installation is possible in difficult areas (e. g. wet rooms) ■■ Accommodates differential movement between wood and substrate ■■ Secure and durable adhesive bonding Additional Advantages of Sika Elastic Adhesives Adhesives bond to all woods and a very wide range of substrates ■■ Also suitable for problematic wood species such as teak, maple, beech and bamboo ■■ Primer-less application system ■■ Fast curing ■■ EC-1+-classified products ■■

BREEAM Many of Sika’s adhesives contribute towards achieving Building Research Establishments Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM). Credits are awarded in BREEAM for the use of construction products that have a low environmental impact and are responsibly sourced.

GUN APPLIED

HISTORY The installation of wood floors began with mechanical fixings (boards nailed or stapled down) and by bedding in and bonding with bituminous compounds. Later, came rigid wood adhesives and additionally many wood floors and laminates installed with no fixings to the subfloor, also known as ‘floating systems’. All of these installation methods have significant disadvantages. For example , mechanically fixed floors will creak, floating floors increase reflected noise and feel springy giving the ‘trampoline effect’, plus rigid adhesives can damage the sub floor, caused by stress transfer.

Full Surface Elastic Bonding System

Sika® AcouBond System consists of high quality PE-foam mats, 3mm thick, with symmetrically placed cutouts in which to apply the SikaBond® elastic adhesive.

A technically advanced elastic bonded system is ideal where very high movement and long term, durable adhesion is required. Using a full surface of Sika’s elastic adhesive, applied by trowel or dispenser is an excellent way of bonding wood flooring. This system is ideal for use when ambient and impact sound reduction or underfloor heating efficiency are important. Suitable for all wood flooring types, including problematic woods like beech, maple and bamboo, used in residential or commercial buildings and areas of high foot traffic.

Walking Comfort The Sika® AcouBond system allows the floor to slightly compress at every footfall and therefore cushion every step.

Sound Reduced Radiation The PE-foam mat ensures an optimal adhesive thickness and fills the hollow space between wood floor and substrate. Compared with a conventional floating installation, this system reduces sound radiation by up to 10dB, which means halving of the audibility level to the human ear. (airborne)

FULL SURFACE RIGID PARQUET ADHESIVES

SikaBond® MS Wood Floor

Soft Floor Covering Adhesives

The Importance Of Correct Site Assessment An Experts View

Soft floor coverings like carpet, lino, and vinyl can be applied using two different types of adhesive: Wet and dry. (Dry is also known as pressure-sensitive). Wet Adhesives Possess shorter flash-off and installation times. The flooring coverings have to be installed immediately after the specified waiting time, typically at least 30 minutes after the application of the adhesive. We currently offer a DIY example of this type of adhesive used for bonding carpets. Dry Adhesives (Pressure Sensitive) Longer flash-off and installation times. Remain tacky even after complete evaporation of the emulsion carrier contained within the adhesive. We currently offer a DIY example of this type of adhesive used for bonding carpets.

Mammoth Carpet Spray

SOFT FLOOR COVERING ADHESIVES

Sprayable medium duty glue which fixes P.U. and foam backed carpets, carpet tiles, underlay, paper felt and cork to most common substrates. Economical and time saving. Foaming formula gives low soak into substrates.

Here, Mick Hooper, Wood Floor Bonding Key Account Manager for Sika, with 30 years’ experience in flooring and Sika products specifically, looks at the importance of surface preparation to avoid costly errors and how self-levelling compounds can really help to make the end process as straight forward as possible. Before starting any project, special attention must be paid to the current state of the floor to assess what work is required. In doing so, it is possible to ensure that the subfloor will be compatible with the chosen flooring product, be it wood, carpet or vinyl, and will not cause any damage to these materials - in many cases, wood, for example, can cup or buckle if too much moisture is present in the finished subfloor, so care must be taken to ensure that this primary stage is correct, regardless of the floor selected.

however, it is important to first identify the areas in which dips and valleys occur so that the compound can be poured accordingly. Using a straight edge, such as a level, it is easy to see where these occur and can be marked accordingly so that these areas can be worked on first to bring the room to an even level. Working in this way, it is possible to keep waste to a minimum, which can further help to keep costs down. Once the compound has been applied it should be left to dry completely before being opened to traffic, otherwise the resulting pressure may cause cracks and holes to appear which will affect the strength and stability of the floor. The next stage in the process is to lay the chosen flooring material. However, it is incredibly important to test the moisture levels in the floor to ensure it is dry enough to take the chosen flooring material. By definition, a dry reading should be below 75% RH or 2.0% CM (carbide method) moisture content by weight depending on the type of test carried out. Depending on the project in question, the measurement can be carried out using one ensure that costly of four different methods.

Through such diligence, it is possible to repairs will not be required further down the line, leaving professionals with complete peace of mind that the finished project will meet demands and will continue to last for many years to come. Before any levelling compound materials are applied, the floor itself must be thoroughly cleaned and free from dust and debris. Surfaces which are especially friable or dusty must first be primed with an acrylic/water solution to help consolidate and seal the surface – ultimately, this will reduce the amount of imperfections in the cured levelling material. Similarly, any old bituminous layers or existing adhesives must be completely removed to ensure that the best possible bond is achieved with the parent substrate and provide a finished surface that is flat, even and free of defects throughout the room. The use of a self levelling compound is one way of ensuring that subfloors can be quickly and professionally prepared and are in a fit state to accept the chosen flooring product once dry and fully cured. Delivering a smooth, even surface that is free from cracks and bumps, a self-levelling compound provides the ideal surface onto which a new floor can be laid – especially when the use of flooring adhesives is also involved.

If the moisture readings are deemed too high, a suitable liquid damp proof membrane, such as SikaBond Rapid DPM, must be applied prior to the application of any floor finishes. By adhering to these simple procedures, it is possible to ensure flooring projects become error free – a point which can not only be costly to resolve, but also incredibly time consuming if the problem itself stems from the initial preparation and levelling stages. If this is the case, the project will need to be completely re-traced, going back through each stage to assess where the problem may have occurred.

To help make the process as straight forward as possible, the use of a specially designed self-levelling compound, such as those available from Sika, can really help to speed things up whilst providing reassurance all round, both to the professional and the end user, that the floor will take the loading pressures placed upon it, without any adverse effect further down the line.

Supplied as a powder in easy to manage bags, selflevelling compounds can be mixed with water to make the exact amount required before simply being poured onto the subfloor surface. From a practicality perspective

The founder and director of Gazelli had visited the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea and had liked the compelling effect of employing large, long Dinesen Douglas fir boards installed using Sika’s Primer MB and Acoubond® products, in a gallery context.

Accessories Sika and Everbuild supply a number of accessories that are an important tool when installing wood flooring The installation of wood flooring should not be carried out unless the moisture content of a substrate and the wood flooring has been checked. The Tramex Moisture Meter is an essential tool for any installer to have in their toolbox, and can prevent costly damage from warping if there is too much moisture in either surface. The Tramex Hygrometer also assists in this by measuring the moisture content in the atmosphere which in turn can affect the curing time of an adhesive.

Quartz Sand

Sika® Tramex Hygrometer A light coloured kiln dried graded quartz sand for use with Sika coatings and membranes to provide a mechanical key for subsequent levelling materials. Available in three grain sizes:

This pocket sized Digital Hygrometer provides fast and accurate measurement of relative humidity, ambient temperature and dew point of the environment.
