Education + Co-worker: Derya Yapıcıoğlu As our thesis project of the bachelor’s degree, we presented a research on how to approach to the problem of a regeneration process of soon-to-be massive urban void Ataturk Airport of Istanbul. For more than 40 years, this airport has served as the main civilian international gate of Republic of Turkey, which played an enormous role on the economy and urbanization of the district citof Istanbul throughout many problematic development phases.

The 11 km² void that the moving of Atatürk International Airport will create in this central area is a valuable yet tricky opportunity to give back what İstanbul lost over the years for community commons as in recreational spaces, green areas and natural habitats for local fauna.

It is crucial to approach this design problem in a way to create spaces that both work in efficiency and are actually living properly. To create these living spaces, we decided to create a core area that feed the site with the user traffic it needs as using the great amount of building stock and transportation infrastructure on the airport buildings area to re-purpose this place as an educational infrastructure for İstanbul and surrounding cities.

Library & Exhibition Center

It is thought that the library, which is the most important unit of the education research center, is constructed in old domestic flight building. This area will also be used for public exhibitions where researches are exhibited.

Avitation Museum The area where the aviation museum is located has been redesigned to increase public spaces. Concrete floors were used for museum buildings and exhibition areas.

Istanbul University Faculty of Architecture Co-worker: Ege Balıbek The project was designing an architecture faculty building for Istanbul University in Vezneciler region. Regarding this, detailed historical analysis of historical peninsula region was carried out. At the same time, the concept of how the architectural education should be was questioned. These research and analyses determined the theme and design process of the project.

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

faculty of architecture

The Faculty of Architecture of Istanbul University is comprised of craft workshops, classrooms, studio structure and student center constructions.

Many masters and craftsmen such as wooden masters, glass masters, ceramic artists are located in the ateliers. In this case, students have the opportunity to be in contact with the material, to understand the technique of the material and to observe the production stages.

classes and staffrooms

The open-studio decision has been adopted in this building where architectural studios are located. The building where the classrooms are located separately from the studios.

There is a student center in the faculty where students can conduct social activities. In this structure, it connects directly to the square.

Wooden material is used without bonding material. In this project exploring the experience of different postures and two different joint details were used and the relationship with light was emphasized. The project was produced on anon-to-one scale using a CNC machine.

While the designing process we deformed the two sections of triangles on the x, y, z coordinats. After the deformation our macroform was created.

We combined our sections with the method of dovetail joint. Also we used a screw when we combined the sections that touches each other. For the other sections we used a screw called allen.

We compounded our macroforms with two tie rods from down. Thus with our variational macroform the flatness of tie rods disappeared on the top. Also for aesthetic purposes we used bamboo pieces on these screws. We aimed a good visual relationship between wood join and bamboos.

4th İstanbul Design Biennial The School of Earthquaqe Diplomacy

Navine G. Khan-Dossos - 14-15 September 2018 - arter

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), the biennial brought together old and new knowledge, academic and amateur, professional and personal, engaging multigenerational, transdisciplinary practitioners from Turkey and abroad. Looking at the 1999 earthquakes in Greece and Turkey, The School of Earthquake Diplomacy takes its name from the exchange of mutual aid and public empathy when both countries were hit by earthquakes within weeks of each other. It was a very particular moment, at both political and geological levels, one that brought about mutual coordination of resources, and ongoing shared research to prepare for future earthquakes. Many people have memories of that time, and the project aims to engage these memories in the creation of a new work. The School is one that focuses on meditation rather than mediation as a creative strategy. A series of artist-led workshops in Athens and Istanbul aim to explore the subject through painting based on international symbols used in public space to denote the threat of earthquakes in the local vicinity

Mesudiye Landscape Workshop

Location: Muğla Datça Mesudiye Village Participants: Mesudiye residents and university students Date: 2015

On August 8-13, 2015, we carried out a landscape workshop in the village of Mesudiye in Datça with 5 HiM members, thirteen university students, villagers, and volunteers who were involved. We worked in groups as alternating teams for simultaneous advancement of applications. Tires, pallets, etc. collected from the village with an announcement we made before, are used to experiment to create seating units and tables to be used in the school garden. At the same time, we created a connecting element for the one and a half meter height difference that divides the garden into two. The old stone school nearby, which has a longer history than the converted school, with one-room, no roof and no chimneys is also dealt within the workshop. It is cleaned and organized to create an open-air usage.
