About

About With the desire to create high-quality products made from the finest natural materials, Silkeborg Uldspinderi was established in 1987. The tradition of working with nature’s goods dates to the 1940s, where the family’s first wool spinning mill was founded. Since the beginning, raw wool has been the focus of Silkeborg Uldspinderi, and the fascination with wool as a unique natural material has remained intact over the years. We have since fallen in love with the alpaca’s beautiful fibers, of which we are now also experts. We have created a specific design language that focuses on good craftmanship and elegant colors through years of experience and a deep understanding of a material’s properties and possibilities. We collaborate with designers who share a passion for natural materials and new creative perspectives on Scandinavian design. The nature, the colors, the raw materials, and the tactility are interpreted into beautiful designs that are tailored and perfected by hand and speak to all your senses and invite you to touch, feel and fall in love. It is all translated into functional and long-lasting products designed to stand the test of time.

Materials

Materials The natural way

For many years we have been known for our throws made from the unique Gotland wool, and we have been working with wool for three generations. We have traveled the world to find the best raw materials and as the world keeps changing, we will continue looking to be able to always produce the best possible products. We get the best alpaca fibers in Peru – here, the alpaca lives in great herds in the Andes Mountains. Introducing alpaca into our products has made it possible to work with one of nature’s best materials. We believe in creating natural living conditions for the animals. We reduce our environmental impact by letting the sheep and alpacas live in the most natural environment throughout their lives. It is of the highest priority for us that our animals live in a sustainable, free-range, and natural habitat with space to ensure that the animals live out their inherent behavior. The animals are only gathered when they must be sheared - and then returned to the wild afterward.

WOOL

Wool is our foundation. Wool is a unique natural material that provides insulation against both heat and cold, is naturally dirt-repellent, can hold lots of moisture without feeling wet, and has antibacterial properties. Wool has endless possibilities because its nature varies depending on the geographical origins and the individual sheep. In addition, the spinning, the dying, the weaving, and the processing that follows, allow for a wide range of possibilities when creating beautiful and lasting products. The natural nuances of the wool, white, grey, and brown, are defining components in our collections, and the wool is carefully sorted right after shearing.

Materials

Materials Alpaca

We work with alpaca from Peru, where the fibers have adapted to the Andes’ harsh climate. The beautiful and thick coat provides insulation against both heat and cold. The skills of local artisans have been refined down through generations, thus enabling the raw fibers into beautiful textiles of exceptional quality. Alpaca is available in several grades, but we have chosen to work only with the finest qualities: Baby alpaca and premium baby alpaca. The names do not refer to the alpaca’s age but only describe the delicate and thin quality. We have chosen to produce our alpaca products exclusively in Peru.

Pure craftmanship – since 1987 Working together

Craftmanship

We have a great, long-lasting relationship with our suppliers who give us a fresh perspective on the production and sustained efficiency. For us, a good relationship means ethical and honest behavior and regular and effective communication for a constant, continual improvement of our operations. Our production takes place in Lithuania and Peru, where we have our own offices, as it is essential for us to have long-term and stable collaborations based on mutual trust. We know our suppliers, and they know our values. That ensures that our production and working conditions are well-functioning, which is crucial as we operate in three different countries with different traditions and structures. Since Jesper Castillo Olsen took over the company in 2017, it was with the vision of combining our unique knowledge of wool with a new approach to design and textiles among skilled textile designers. Knowledge and professionalism about textiles must flourish at a high international level. Now and forever.

What we do We want to create a moment of joyfulness, capturing the feeling of being surrounded by comfort and warmth - that we do through high-quality throws, cushions, and scarves made in a combination between uncompromising quality and appealing design.

What we do

We want to share our genuine love for the material. Raw wool has always been the focal point for us, while the fascination with wool as a unique natural material has remained intact over the years. Wool has endless possibilities as it differs depending on which sheep it is from and where it originates on the planet. In addition, processes such as spinning the yarn, weaving, and finishing all enable a world of possibilities in creating attractive and high-quality products that last a lifetime.

Design collaborations We have worked with wool for three generations, from the raw fiber to the finished product. We have always focused on good raw material, knowledgeable processing, and high quality. Managing the heritage is about persistently insisting that a product from Silkeborg Uldspinderi is based on expert knowledge of fibers and processing and close and lasting relationships with producers and subcontractors. The development as we advance is about making crafts and design equal components in product development. This means letting the two parts go hand in hand and lift each other and the company. Ten years ago, we initiated a collaboration with textile designer Tina Ratzer. This collaboration opened new doors for us, and there is no doubt that additional collaborations are the way forward. That is why we have invited new designers on board – all of which hold knowledge about textiles, experience, and deep respect for the material. We are pleased that Tina Ratzer, Karin Carlander, Margrethe Oddgaard the design duo Witek & Golik, Susanne Rützou, and Stilleben duo each have contributed with their designs and views on textures, materials, and colors.

Our Design collaborations Susanne Rützou Susanne Rützou was a clothing designer, and her experience in designing and styling is implied when she, with few but effective grips, leaves her imprint on new scarves under the name of Silkeborg Uldspinderi. “To me, Silkeborg Uldspinderi stands for a loving and a nerdy approach towards the material that leads to a devoted approach to doing something that will last for many years.”

Stilleben The designers Ditte Reckweg and Jelena Schou Nordentoft both graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. They are the founders of the famous design shop ‘Stilleben’ in Copenhagen and shares a passion for good craftsmanship and peculiar object. They see it as their most delicate job to create stories and aesthetic expressions that reflect our time live. The collaboration between Silkeborg Uldspinderi and Stilleben has arisen through a common respect for each other’s craftsmanship. It has resulted in ‘The Sweater Collection’ consisting of 4 wool throws in fresh pastel colors.

Margrethe Odgaard After graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2005, Margrethe worked as a textile designer in Philadelphia and later in Paris before setting up a design studio in Copenhagen in 2013. Margrethe has managed to work herself into an award-winning Danish designer driven by a stubborn and persistent exploration of colors. In the collaboration between Margrethe Odgaad and Silkeborg Uldspinderi, Margrethe wanted to create a playful and cheerful element for the home, which would add a lovely touch to the many cozy corners in the house. It resulted in a traditional and unexpected expression called ‘Franja’.

Witek & Golik Sisse Witek and Martyna Golik are international in their approach to design. Their signature does not lean towards a Scandinavian design heritage— no tight minimalism – rather fabulous decadence. Witek & Golik is a breath of fresh air in the collection. They stand as representatives of a new generation of textile designers with an international footprint. They both have a deep respect for the craft that forms the basis of their profession.

Tina Ratzer Tina Ratzer is a textile designer educated at Kolding Arts and Crafts School in 1999. Tina Ratzer’s works are based on solid values of beauty, durability, and function. A modern graphic and geometric expression characterizes her design, which stands out from the crowd despite a simple design idiom and highlights her courage as a craftswoman.

Karin Carlander Located in a large bright room at the former knife factory in Raadvad north of Copenhagen, Karin Carlander runs the company, Karin Carlander. Karin Carlander is a weaver with a big W. Itis her job, lifestyle, and mission to protect the craft. She finds it deeply meaningful to create valuable textiles. She does this on her own in the company named Textile No by Karin Carlander.
