Waiheke Island Walking Festival 27 Oct - 4 Nov 2012

WHETHER YOU’RE INTO WANDERING, STROLLING, HIKING, TRAMPING or just plain walking - you’re in good company. Throughout the ages walking has inspired writers and poets. Its rhythm is therapeutic and a form of meditation-in-motion, unlocking creativity, solving problems and just ‘getting your head together’. Why not get together this spring with fellow walkers from all over the country and beyond, on the annual Waiheke Walking Festival. Never ones to stand still, the organisers have kept many of the popular routes from previous years and have added some exciting new trails. Over nine days, the festival is the perfect excuse to come to Waiheke, stay over You’ll return home knowing you’ve had the best fun, seen some of the country’s most beautiful scenery, and made many new friends; and there won’t be the need to ‘walk There is no danger of being bored on these walks with trails named: The Friends of Dorothy Walk (a yellow brick road?), Nordic Walking, Wild Weed Walks (purely medicinal Page 10

One way to make the most of the island is to take advantage of the Fullers bike racks on the front of most of the Waiheke Island buses. Bikes are carried for free and extends as far as Onetangi. So by using the bus one-way you’ll have more time to swim, dine or visit a vineyard. And with all bicycles carried free on the Fullers ferries this is a popular option! If you yearn for then your best bet is to check out the Waiheke tracks around the Onetangi Sports Park. The friendly guys and girls at the Club are holding their annual 4hr Mountain Bike Challenge soon - and you can add to the fun by getting a team together. (Details over page).
