July 14 – August 25, 2018
Silvermine Arts Center – 68th Art of the Northeast Summer 2018 The job posed to the art juror is both an impossible prospect and a welcome challenge. As a contemporary art curator, having the opportunity to look at several hundred new works of art in a few sittings is a great pleasure. This charge is truly the best part of the job. On the other hand, as a firm believer that art should be experienced in person, having to select an exhibition based on digital images viewed on a laptop proved to be a difficult task. Still, the high quality of submissions across all media shone through—390 artists each submitted as many as five works for consideration. In the end, 44 artists were selected for the 2018 Art of the Northeast exhibition. The final selection must be understood as the opinion and eye of one individual. A different juror would have chosen an entirely different show. My subjective decisions were grounded in objective criteria—a balance of creative and formal elements. Color, technique, and composition weighed equally with subject, concept, and individual style. A strong and diverse range of work emerged. From abstract to representational, these various offerings cut across categories and mediums: painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, print, collage, and ceramic art. This vast and impressive range of work speaks to the many individual voices creating contemporary art today. In selecting the award winners, I placed emphasis on the unique voice and signature style of the individual artist. I find this particular combination is among the greatest challenges for artists working today. There are many artists who are excellent technicians. However, the more rare artist mines new territory, presents a singular vision, and delivers a surprising experience that captures one’s attention and interest. I had many captivating moments in reviewing the submissions for the Silvermine Arts Center’s 68th Art of the Northeast. Art makes you look. Great art makes you look again.
