Welcome to Silvermine’s 4th Annual Living Art Awards Benefit and 97th Anniversary Have you ever asked: “Why is ART important?” It is a question I ponder, with simple response: The human spirit compels Expression : ART is expression. Without language, ART is voice; All alone, ART is soul; With others, ART is contact. ART flows through time revealing the hearts and minds of those who precede us and those who surround us, while leaving our mark for those who follow us. Silvermine is committed to enriching lives with the transformative power of ART. Through partnerships, our community extends to those living with disabilities, struggling with emotional challenges or addiction, and to youth in under-served schools. Tonight, we recognize Visionaries for Art who made their mark insuring ART is vibrant in our community. Each honoree played a principal role in Silvermine’s triumphs and partners today in forging our future. Please join me in honoring this year’s recipients: Diageo - Living Art Award Corporate Honoree – for philanthropic commitment to the community and generous support of Silvermine. Pamela Davis - Legacy Award - for steadfast leadership as Executive Director, abounding generosity and artistic accomplishment as a member of the Guild. Fran Meehan - Artist Award – for strategic leadership as Chair, Board of Trustees, munificent support and artistic excellence as a member of the Guild. Lyman & Diana Delano - Philanthropy Award – for philanthropic commitment to Silvermine especially the School of Art and the ceramics studio. This year’s Living Art Awards Benefit is made possible by the dedication of co-chairs: David Dunlop, Stephanie Joyce and their committee. And YoU! Your generosity and ardor are the cornerstone of Silvermine’s next century. The board and I are deeply grateful. Have a wonderful evening knowing it is YOU that makes it all possible. Sincerely, Rose-Marie Fox Board Chair

Dear friends and neighbors,

Welcome to the Fourth Annual Silvermine Arts Center Living Art Awards Benefit at the Stamford Yacht Club. Tonight, achievement and talent will be celebrated with various awards. Congratulations to all of tonight’s Visionaries for Art honorees: Diageo, Living Art Award; Pamela Davis, Legacy Award; Fran Meehan, Artist Award; and Lyman and Diana Delano, Philanthropy Award. Silvermine Arts Center has been a presence in the community for 96 years. Thousands of people of all ages have learned and enjoyed the arts thanks to them. Its galleries and community programming are shining examples of how an organization can enhance and expand learning through the arts. A majority of youth who benefitted from Silvermine’s Outreach Education Programs are from Norwalk. I am appreciative that they can have that experience because of Silvermine Arts Center. On behalf of the City of Norwalk, I want to extend appreciation to the Silvermine Arts Center Staff and Board of Trustees for what you do every day. Thank you for your tireless work, dedication, and involvement in our communities. Best wishes for a successful event and have a wonderful evening.

LEGACY AWARD

Pamela Davis Silvermine has been a center of creative learning for me over the past 15 years. I’ve witnessed artistic growth and joy in so many students – young and not so young. The buildings burst with energy, the faculty is unparalleled, and staff is undeniably committed to Silvermine. I am so fortunate to be part of this unique institution.” Pam Davis came to painting later in life after a career in finance. She began her studies with Vijay Kumar at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. She now studies with David Dunlop at the Silvermine Arts Center. Her prints and landscapes have received a number of awards from the Rowayton Arts Center. She is a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists. After serving as the Executive Director of the Silvermine Arts Center, Pam returned to painting with a renewed passion and a change of medium from watercolor to acrylics. Pam’s landscapes embody a dynamic sense of place. The basic elements are classical, yet the result is contemporary. Her work uses a number of tools and techniques to achieve a layering of images that are at once vibrant, yet serene. The human mark is evident throughout her creations. Pam’s art reflects the influence of her teachers, the old masters, Moti, Richter, and Turner, among others. Her work can be found in private collections in Aspen, Atlanta, Boston, Fairfield County, Jackson Hole, Newburyport and New York City.

ARTIST AWARD

Fran Meehan "Silvermine is a gem in the woods. Everything I was looking for was right here," she reflected. "The classes and instructors are wonderful, while the community of artists provides a place where people can talk and share their interests. It's a special place where you can truly express yourself." Fran is a painter and printmaker who specializes in art that is inspired by objects and personal experiences she encounters in her everyday life. Be it a fringed jacket, a sunny seascape, or something as mundane as a plastic bag, Fran transforms the ordinary into works of fantasy and ethereal beauty. A native of Long Island, her passion for art has been decades in the making, winning her first Best in Show award at the young age of 19 while still a graphic design student at New York City's renowned Parsons School of Design. After spending a lengthy hiatus raising her family in Connecticut, Fran found herself longing to reconnect with the art world. She walked through the doors of the Silvermine Arts Center in 1991 and never left. As a way to give back to the community she loves, Fran has co-chaired several annual Print Shows and has also served on the Board of Trustees for seven years, including terms as Vice Chair and Chair. She is also an active member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists and the Monotype Guild of New England. Fran's work has been displayed in dozens of galleries, shows and juried exhibitions throughout the Northeast . Several commissioned pieces reside in private collections, while others are on display in corporate collections including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, The Bank of Ireland and St. Joseph's Hospital, both in Stamford, CT.

PHILANTHROPY AWARD

Lyman and Diana Delano “Lyman Delano was one of the very first students I had when I started my job at Silvermine four years ago. His kindness and support of fellow students helped establish my love for the school. Lyman is one of the most even keeled, kind, gentle men I have met. When I began managing the pottery studio at Silvermine, the Soda Kiln project had barely started; only the foundation and one layer of firebrick had been built. With Lyman’s encouragement, a letter was sent to all pottery students asking for donations to move the project forward. Lyman made the initial investment, which then spurred other students to donate. We ultimately accumulated $10,000 in total funds. His long continued support of the school and the pottery studio is deeply felt.” Jon Puzzuoli Faculty Member Pottery Studio Manager Silvermine honors Diana and Lyman Delano for their long-term commitment and significant support of the Silvermine Arts Center.

Congratulations to our honorees and thanks to Silvermine for enriching our community with the arts.
