LIVING ART AWARD HEARST CONNECTICUT MEDIA GROUP

Barbara Roessner, Executive Editor Hearst Connecticut Media Group is the largest media organization in Connecticut -- an amalgam of eight daily newspapers, 13 weeklies and a suite of digital products across Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield and Middlesex counties. It is dedicated to independent local journalism that reflects the breadth and complexity of our communities – including the arts. Hearst CT’s Sunday Arts & Style section is unique in our region. It welds high-end photography, sophisticated arts writing and upscale magazine design to capture a vibrant local arts scene, from visual and performing arts to film, fashion, architecture and design. Executive Editor Barbara T. Roessner launched the section two years ago with the help of a talented and dedicated staff. Roessner is a Pulitzer Prizewinning editor who joined Hearst in 2012 after a distinguished career at the Hartford Courant, where she was a beat reporter, chief political writer, opinion columnist, writing coach and finally managing editor overseeing major investigations and long-form narrative projects. She has provided strategic communications for several media startups, non-profit organizations and academic institutions, including Harvard University. Roessner is a graduate of Wesleyan University, where she majored in Ancient Greek and Latin. As a Knight Fellow at Stanford University, she spent the 2003-2004 academic year studying painting with Mexican-born artist Enrique Chagoya.

LECAGY AWARD

Bill and Barbara Hilson The Legacy Award this year honors Bill and Barbara Hilson for their longstanding commitment and significant support of the Silvermine Arts Center. Bill Hilson, originally an architect, fell in love with type, then turned to graphic design and illustration for his professional focus. He’s spent most of his career living on the “burning edge” of technological innovation, and has combined technology and creativity in his design and consulting practices. Bill introduced “desktop publishing” to some of the largest ad agencies in NYC, forever transforming the creative production landscape. Presently, he heads his own design practice, specializing in corporate identity, presentation design, branding and marketing. Bill is also partnered with reknowned type designer Tony DiSpigna in their bespoke typeface design studio Thinstroke Design LLC. Bill is an adjunct professor CCE at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Communication Design Department, serving since 1991 and for eight years Bill was a group leader for the Creative Problem-Solving Institute, and is a colleague of the Creative Education Foundation. Bill is a Founding Director of The Institute for Sustainable Communication, a 501(c)-3 organization devoted to promoting sustainability practices for business and industry. He has served on the Board of the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, Connecticut as chair of the Marketing Committee. Bill has served as a faculty representative to the Development Committee for Pratt’s Board of Trustees, and has been on the Board of Trustees at Whitby School in Greenwich Connecticut. Bill is an avid photographer, motorcyclist, guitarist, scuba diver, and dabbles in amateur (ham) radio.

ARTIST EDUCATOR AWARD

Nancy McTague-Stock, MFA Nancy McTague-Stock received a coveted Fellowship for post-graduate work in Experimental Drawing at The Slade School of Art at the University of London, an MFA from the Art Institute of Boston in Visual Studies, with famed mentors Dike Blair and Judith Barry. She holds a Marketing Strategy certificate from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Metalsmithing and Textiles. Having exhibited in over ten museums, solo/group exhibitions in galleries in Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, Serbia and US, Nancy’s work is in private & public institutions worldwide, with latest acquisition of her work by the Library of Congress and the Beinecke at Yale University. Nancy has served as a Curator and Juror for academic, private and public exhibitions, including The Prince of Wales Foundation in the UK. She teaches periodic workshops, mentors grad students, artists, educators and has brought outreach to the under-served communities of artists here and abroad. My most recent work has included a portfolio of photographic works, a book of drypoints, mixed media drawings and an ongoing series of oil paintings. My preoccupation with the status of our rivers, lakes and oceans has been an ongoing project for the past ten years. Having lived on nature preserves and near the water my whole life, the health of the environment is of great importance to me.

OUTREACH PHILANTHROPY AWARD

Vivien White Vivien White and her late husband moved to Stamford in 1956, when a friend suggested they check out the area. “Stamford was such an active, interesting, diverse city then, as it is now,” says Vivien. “There were so many ways to get involved in the community that that’s what I did.” Vivien served on the Connecticut Commission of the Arts for twenty-five years, where she helped to seek out and nurture emerging artists. “I liked the breadth of their outreach to the whole state and to all disciplines in the arts,” comments Vivien. She also served as vice chair of the Stamford Cultural Development Corporation (SCDC), which offered grants and free consultations to artists and arts organizations. Vivien held leadership positions on the boards of the New England Foundation for the Arts, Stamford Community Arts Partnership Program, Urban League of Southern Connecticut—and the list goes on. “I like to say, I don’t play tennis,” chuckles Vivien, when asked how she does it all. “I’m also involved with the youth services organization Domus,” she adds. “Its charter schools here, Trailblazers and Stamford Academy, serve underprivileged kids who have a hard time making it in the Stamford public schools. As a volunteer, I’ve been finding resident artists in all disciplines to sit with the kids and help them produce art. It really enriches their lives.” In addition, Vivien is an active supporter of Silvermine Arts Center, Stamford Loft Artists Association, Treetops Chamber Music Society, The Ballet School of Stamford and Connecticut Ballet.

To our incredible mother Nancy McTague-Stock, We are so proud of you. You inspire us every day to go aer our dreams and to work hard to obtain them. As an artist, you continue to challenge yourself whether it is in painting, printmaking, photography, or jewelry. Your dedication to the arts goes far beyond your own work as your students, teachers, peers, and colleagues speak your praises daily. As your children, we are lucky enough to encounter your passion for the arts every day. You raised us to be thoughtful, creative, intelligent, and curious. As a mom, you have given us all of the tools needed to flourish and shine. Just as your artwork continues to flourish and shine. We are so grateful for everything you do for your family and your community. Congratulations on this incredible honor. You continue to raise the bar every day. We love you so much. Your Legacy Counts Here You are invited to become a Member of Silvermine’s Legacy Society. All of us are indebted to those who precede us. We share a community whose foundations we have not laid. At the same time, we are seeds of the future. The decisions we make will be known by generations we will never meet. Give the gift of the future and become a part of Silvermine forever. By making a major gift or charitable provision to the Legacy Fund you join the passionate and inspired art lovers who have chosen to leave a lasting impact making the world a better place.
