French Polynesia is a collective of more than 100 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, including Tahiti, the Marquesas and the Society Islands. THE KIMBERLEY

The world’s biggest island has some of the smallest scattered off its west coast, as if crumbs of Australia have been blown across the Indian Ocean on a sea breeze. These are the spectacular specks that even Australians haven’t heard of – Abrolhos, Dirk Hartog, Montebello, Lacepedes, the Buccaneer Archipelago – and yet these fascinating bastions of wilderness and wildlife are all explored on a Silversea expedition cruise.

Indeed, one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers, Western Australia’s Kimberley is an explorer’s dream come true. In addition to its fascinating offshore islands, this primordial land remains pristine and relatively untouched. Rife with a complex network of dramatic gorges, majestic canyons, limestone cliffs, and intriguing horizontal falls, it’s also home to deep Aboriginal culture and rock art dating back at least 40,000 years. In fact, so old is this land you can also spot fossil footprints formed by dinosaurs over 120 million years ago just off the coast of Broome. Quintessentially Australian, the Kimberley is home to prolific wildlife including rock wallabies, white-bellied sea eagles, mangrove herons and more.
