In 2008, Indonesia’s Kaimana Regency in West Papua declared more than 2,300 square miles of Triton Bay as a Marine Protected Area, and Conservation International maintains a field station here – all with good reason: the staggering marine biodiversity is truly second to none, home to the tiniest pygmy seahorses, nesting turtles, graceful whale sharks and a population of coastal Bryde’s whales.
