Disadvantages of Home Schooling

I am writing to tell you that I enjoyed your summer issue. I enjoyed everything except for the article on the negative aspects of homeschooling. I home school my children and, while it is an endeavor not to be taken lightly, I feel it is the best choice when considering education options for children. I disagree with the article mentioning that social issues are a negative aspect of homeschooling. My children are very social. They have the benefit of not being confined to a classroom with 25 same-age peers for 8 hours a day. They are able to visit the library, parks and retail stores where they interact with people of all ages. My kids have no trouble interacting with others at church or playgroups. I think one of the most misunderstood factors of homeschooling is this socialization issue. People are mislead if they believe that public school 10

is the ideal social situation. Kids are grouped together by age and subjected to myriads of negative influences. The homeschooling family has made the choice to put their children and their education first. I hope that future issues will discuss both sides of the education debate. -Thanks, Corinna S. Thank you so much Corinna for your response. SilverSpoon doesn’t take a stance on whether or not home schooling is advantageous or a disadvantage. The article was written from the viewpoint of the writer.

For us it was harder to get our daughter to potty train. I did find that a potty chart helped us with potty training though. We made a chart for the month and made it like a calendar and when the kids went the whole day with out accidents they got to get a sticker. I even let them pick out their sticker for the day and put it on the chart by themselves and it seemed to work for our kids. -Jennifer C.

I commend you for your pursuit to home school your children. As mentioned in the first paragraph there are many advantages to doing so. We will make sure in our upcoming issues we dedicate an article to the advantages of home schooling as we know there are many. -SilverSpoon Magazine

Potty training is usually based on the child and their interest in the potty. Some have tried cheerios for their son, and mothers say their daughter wanted to be just like them. Kids also love to be rewarded for their accomplishments. Huggies.com recommends holding a potty celebration. They also offer potty training DVDs and treats for successfully trained potty trainees. -SilverSpoon Magazine

Potty Training Tips

Drop That Pacifier

To me it’s all on the child.I let my grandson walk around without a pamper and tell him to tell me when he has to use potty. It worked. -Adrienne W.

We asked our Readers: How do you aid in transition of ending the pacifier? We put them in the kids stocking and Santa exchanged them

SILVERSPOON SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER2010

for big kid stuff and took the pacifiers to the babies. (It worked really well! Even a week before Christmas. -Kelly A. My kids never really used pacifiers but I have heard one of my friends say that they put all of them into a bag and told them that they were a big kid now, and would give them to baby (insert name here) so that way they would have some pacifiers because they needed them. -Kristi R. None of my children indulge on a pacifier, but like Krysti, I’ve heard many stories about the transition stage. I heard it’s like breastfeeding (which I did) you gradually take it away from them....so you don’t bring upon them anxiety separation. Maybe if they’re old enough to understand have a going away ceremony for the pacifier, I did that when trying to transition from a bottle to a cup... exclusively. More on the resistance aspect of it, they will resist (no one is ever comfortable with change) but it’s how you deal with their resistance determines the outcome. I fully and completely agree with a “snuggle session”, lots and lots of hugs/kisses, embrace them as often as you can....exclusive me and you time works magic.... Kenderecia S. Well I didn’t have a problem with the pacifier since my son never had one, but I do have the thumb problem. I breastfed for six months straight no bottle and once I decided to stop I just stopped and

gave him an bottle. Same with the change from bottle to cup once my son turned 1. I took the bottle away, no weaning and he didn’t have a problem but every child is different. My son handles change well… I never really babied him when it came to things like that. If he fell he got back up on his own (unless it was a really bad fall). That’s why my baby is so brave. Sometimes the pacifier becomes more about habit then comfort I have seen kids chewing on the pacifier just because they was use to it being in there mouth. No one really likes change especially certain children. So there is no real way to deal with resistance besides to deal either the child will handle it or they will cry till their lungs hurt, but as a parent you cannot give in since you know best. -Joyce L. I have 3 children and they all used pacifiers. The “take away” age was a little different for each one, as there is no perfect age for anything, but my process was the same. I would gradually limit the usage and cut it down to naps and then just bedtime, PRAISE them for being a big kid and giving the paci up as often as possible, as well as find other things for them to self-comfort with. Another useful tactic was when my children tried to talk I would say something like “Take that thing out, I can’t understand you” or “What? I can’t hear you with that paci in your mouth.” Since my children are very talkative, they had to take it out a lot! As far as resistance, you have to

www.silverspoonmag.com

teach your children like everything else… consistency and not giving up. As a parent you know best and even though the resistance is tough you have to be tougher… this too shall pass right! Just another thought...pacifiers are sometimes, not always but sometimes, used to “hush children” when we are busy. I’d be willing to bet that many children would give up their paci for say, a snuggle session and a bedtime story, or a few minutes of exclusive you and me playtime. If we slow down and find the time to use ourselves as the pacifier more often, that might really help both parent and child!! -Cyndi G. SilverSpoon spoke with a children’s dentist and he suggested putting a hole in the pacifier. He said the comfort comes from the sucking of the pacifier and if there is a hole in it the sucking sensation disappears and they will no longer want that one. He then suggests when they throw that one away no matter how much they beg for it DO NOT purchase another one. -SilverSpoon Magazine

Protection From Child Predators O

ne of the great qualities of children is also a cause for concern for parents and loved ones. Children tend to develop a natural trust for others, especially adults. As a parent it can be difficult to balance their trust and personal safety. Kids are dependent on us for protection and to teach them how to handle dangerous situations. Unfortunately, we live in a society where certain individuals prey on our youth. These predators present a very real danger. Child predators wait for an opportunity to exploit children. This exploitation can result in kidnapping, molestation or even murder. The U.S. Department of Justice, puts out annual statistics on crimes committed against children. Below are real statistics that should serve as a “wake up call” to every parent or guardian of a child under 18. Nearly 800,000 children under the age of 18 are reported missing each year. That is an average of 2,185 missing children reported each day. Over 200,000 children are the victims of family abductions, while nearly 60,000 are victims of non-family abductions. It takes almost no time; you become distracted for a short while and they could be gone. A baby snatched from the mall parking lot, while the mother was putting the older sister into the car. Toddler is taken from a park. Youth reported missing after wandering away from father at a department store. 18

Young girl abducted from her neighborhood by sexual predator. These are just a few examples of how it could happen. Here are some personal security tips to teach your children. Never Walk Alone: Children should never be allowed to walk alone. Parental supervision can help prevent disaster. Get to know your neighbors and other parents. Consider putting together a calendar to ensure that at least one adult is watching the kids at all times. School bus stops are one of the favorite places that child predators frequent. Teach kids to utilize the “buddy system” with groups of at least three being ideal. Scream: Your children should know that in an emergency, they should scream at the top of their lungs for help. The louder the better. Yelling “FIRE” or “HELP ME” will get the needed attention. May I Visit: Child predators often attempt to get a victim go in a car or into a house with to promise of gifts, food and/or candy. Teach your kids to never go anywhere if a stranger. A stranger should be defined as someone that parents have not “approved” Guard: Consider investing in a perimeter fence to for safety and personal security. In addition, many large dog breeds can make excellent

watch dogs. Both are excellent deterrents and make abductions more difficult. Get involved: Should you suspect a crime is taking place, get involved; don’t sit back and watch. They need you to get involved. You can help by recording the license plate number and recording a good description. Call 911 for help right away. Fight Back: Learn to defend yourself, while teaching your child self defense to keep them safe and secure. Children should be taught and even encouraged to fight back should someone grab you. Run: If you can get to safety, run there and stay put until help arrives. Teach Children to: +Use the telephone properly in case of emergencies and practice +Memorize their name, address (including city and state), and phone number (including area code), and your work number. +Walk confidently and stay alert to what’s going on around them. +Know where to go to in an emergency. +Tell a trusted adult immediately if anyone, even a teacher or close relative, touches or speaks to them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Why Parents are Choosing Montessori Charter Public Schools

W

hile the Montessori Method has been quite popular in early education, more and more public charter schools from kindergarten through middle school are adopting Maria Montessori’s philosophies as well. In fact, there are more than 300 public schools in the United States that currently utilize the Montessori Method, and specifically, there are 150 Montessori charter schools. In an age of standardized tests and intense academic pressure, it seems that a growing group of parents and children are turning towards the Montessori Method. WHAT IS THE MONTESSORI METHOD? In a stark contrast to our traditional education model, the Montessori philosophy is a more holistic, individualized approach that places an emphasis on “following the child.” Oneage classrooms are replaced by multi-age environments, and the prevalence of paper and textbooks is traded for multi-sensory educational tools. Instead of adhering to strict lesson plans, children are allowed to select their curriculum, spending as much time as needed in mastering the subject matter. In addition, unlike traditional schools, Montessori schools do not believe in issuing report cards with numbers or grades, as outlined by the North American Montessori Teachers’ Association (NAMTA). Progress is not measured through quantified numbers, but rather through a “reporting and record keeping system” that details observations made throughout the quarter. Rather than seeing an “A” grade for math or a “B” for science, parents of Montessori students will see qualitative evaluations on the report cards for variables including attitude, sense of order, curiosity, concentration, persistence, decision-making skills, and self-discipline. www.silverspoonmag.com

By Grace Chen

While the average private Montessori school may charge anywhere from $5,000 to $11,000 annually for tuition, public Montessori charter schools give students the same educational philosophy for free. Like their private counterparts, many Montessori public schools supplement the academic curriculum with music and art classes, language courses, and nature-based lessons. HOW ARE MONTESSORI CHARTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS PERFORMING? While every Montessori charter public school is measured by its own state’s standardized tests, research on Montessori student performance is quite promising. According to the Association Montessori International (AMI), children who learn under the Montessori Method perform quite well academically and on standardized tests. In an AMI research study evaluating the progress of 201 Milwaukee public school students who had been educated in Montessori schools from preschool through 5th grade, the results were quite positive. In fact, according to the report’s findings, “…attending a Montessori program from the approximate ages of three to eleven predicts significantly higher mathematics and science standardized test scores in high school.” In addition, the research finds that the benefits of a Montessori education extend beyond better science and math scores. In a study that compared inner-city Montessori students with inner-city traditional students, those who attended Montessori schools developed “better social and academic skills” and “superior outcomes” as reported in the academic journal Science. At the kindergarten level, Montessori students obtained better scores in reading and match, displayed more developmentally SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 SILVERSPOON

advanced control and social understanding, as well as played more positively with their peers. At the elementary school level, the Montessori students had a stronger grasp of complex sentence structures and a better understanding of social dilemmas. In a study sponsored by the North American Montessori Teachers’ Association (NAMTA), the impact of a Montessori education at the middle school level was substantial in improving the “quality of experience” for the students. Dr. Rathunde compared the perceptions between Montessori middle school students and those enrolled in traditional middle schools, and the Montessori students reported “a significantly better quality of experience in their academic work than did traditional students.” The Montessori students also felt their schools were more positive learning environments that cultivated active learning, rather than passive or rote learning. Other research has found that Montessori students enjoy social, emotional, and academic benefits from their education. From demonstrating greater responsibility to a deep enthusiasm for learning, as well as increased abilities to adjust to new situations and utilize life skills, Montessori children appear to be more well-rounded than their traditional school counterparts. The future may certainly see more Montessoriinspired public charter schools, especially in light of the Obama administration’s support for charter institutions through the “Race to the Top” grants. With all the benefits the Montessori Method can bring, it is no wonder that more and more parents are subscribing to the “follow the child” philosophy.

The Benefits of Educational Wooden Toys for

Toddlers By Romary Marquez

Modern technology has improved many aspects of our lives. Electronic gadgets, appliances and computers are just some of the basic necessities for the citizens of the contemporary world. Even children have been influenced with the sudden shift of technological advancement we are experiencing today. Toddlers enjoy functional electronic toys, video games and sophisticated remote control cars that could be really fun and exciting to play with. Toys greatly affect children, especially those who are in their early stage of growth and development. Most children have different perception and understanding when it comes to playtime. Some children tend to easily lose their interests while others can be so intrusive that they can easily damage or destroy their toys without even knowing why. Some parents have the misconception of providing electronic video games to young kids thinking it will provide them with amusement and leisure. But apart from this, electronic toys

26

can limit or hold back a child’s ability to think beyond the rules of these electronic devices. Children consider their toys to be one of their most prized possessions and it is important to offer them toys that promotes valuable learning and at the same time enhances their gross motor skills to help them achieve their optimum level of development. Educational wooden toys are especially designed for children who are at the peak of their curiosity and inquisitiveness. Aside from the fact that wooden toys are traditionally equipped to last for a long period of time, it is safer and more practical to use because it is made out of natural materials that are free from synthetic chemicals that could be harmful to your child’s health.

play, problem solving skills, basic shape and color recognition and hand- eye coordination that will contribute to their cognitive and logical development. It also allows your kids to learn how to become more independence and self reliant which is essential in building strong, emotional stability to cope with the world around them. Kid’s would love wooden toys as presents especially when it has the sentiments of their parents as young toddlers and they learn the value of these toys as they grow older and becomes the family heirloom for many generations. Educational wooden toys never get old and it will always be part of our childhood today, tomorrow and the years to come.

Variety of educational wooden toys could bring out the creativity and imagination of your child. From simple building blocks, jigsaw puzzles and board games to push-around toys, tricycles and bikes, wooden toys surely stimulates imaginative

Tips For Setting Boundaries For Your Children By Tom Hunt

T

o be a good parent, one has to know where to draw the line from time to time. From the cradle to the grave, human beings have to learn to live within a set of limits- be it physical or social and psychological. Children need boundaries to keep them safe and to teach them the social norms of the society they live in. We set limits on nearly every aspect of daily life, from geographic boundaries to restrictions on TV shows and, latterly, Internet sites. Children need boundaries to be set on their physical movements and limits set upon their behavior. An infant needs to learn not to go near a boiling saucepan or pick up sharp knives. We set boundaries in the form of guards and obstructions for babies as soon as they are able to move independently. The young infant often struggles to understand these restrictions are there for their own protection. This is in part due 28

to the fact that we are programmed be a mixture of negotiation and to learn from experience- trial and orders. As they child matures, these error. negotiations will become more complex and involve a greater As the child grows older, and they number of themes. begin to interact within a wider social network, we impose more Setting limits is a process of give sophisticated restrictions on their and take - what you take away behavior. can visit next door or the park across the road but they must let you know when they are changing locations and they must first show you they have road sense before being allowed to cross the road on their own. Remember to give clarification about your reasons for imposing a boundary at all times. Rules are best made when they involve the children in question together. Being a part of the rulesetting process helps them understand the rules and consequences better. Of course, you also need to make sure that once a rule has been established, it is enforced consistently and with authority. When the rule is violated, remind the child of the consequence and make it happen. No matter what, consistent application gives the child a feeling of security in knowing that your word is real and that you expect hers to be the same. Rule setting is an art rather than a science when exercised properly, limits show love, caring and understanding. Work with your children and not only will you keep them safe, but you will also earn their respect.

his is my favorite section of the magazine because it allows us to educate our readers on how to be more eco-friendly by becoming consumers of eco-friendly companies. Many parents have taken great “green” strides by utilizing cloth diapers but then we are forced to retract all of that hard work when it is time to potty train. Potty’s have become more and more extravagant in features which include: singing, talking, flashing lights, and more. Though these features will help keep our children engaged and possibly interested in potty training, we probably don’t think about the disposal of the potty being a “non-green” move.

is the first and only eco-friendly potty on the market. The bECOpotty is made from rice husks, a waste product of rice farming and is not only 100% sustainable to produce but also biodegradable once finished with. It is as tough and durable and will last in the home just as long as a plastic potty. The big difference is that once it is disposed of in a landfill or a compost heap, the bECOpotty will break down naturally within 3-5 years. The bECOpotty looks and feels very similar to its conventional counterpart and is comfortable and easy to use. The high back offers extra support, while the large splash-guard helps keep potty training hygienic.

Well despair not as bECOthings, an eco friendly product design company, has recognized the problem of 17 million potties worldwide that end up in a landfill each year. They have come up with a sustainable design that has minimal environmental impact called the bECOpotty. Winner of the Best New Innovation Silver award at the Mother & Baby Awards 2009, bECOpotty

bECOthings suggest once potty training has been complete, let your newly potty-trained little person take their potty out to the garden to bury it. That will definitely give them something to look forward to.

Tackling Temper

Tantrums in Toddlers

By Justina Wang

S

ometimes when your toddler throws horrible temper tantrums, you just wish you can bury your head like an ostrich! It is awfully embarrassing for a parent. Outburst crying, stamping, kicking or throwing herself down are common signs of a temper tantrum. Well, it is not anything new because we have all seen it. It happens at home, school, or in public, this little fellow does not seem to care where or when he/she throws a tantrum. I would definitely have to say that parents or caregivers play the big role in parenting them. Some tantrums can be avoided, others can be solved. The responsibilities lie in us. UNDERSTAND WHY TODDLERS THROW THEM Here are just a few common reasons: 1.Expressing themselves They are impulsive. They simply express themselves without reservation because they have no judgment about consequences. Toddlers would not be shy or shameful about their explosive tantrums because they have yet to learn about how others might think about them. 2. Self-centered Yes, the whole world belongs to them and must go their way. Everything a toddler views will be from his or her own perspective and advantage. Otherwise…they throw the big T again! 3. Tiredness, hungry or overstimulated Although they may master a few words, they may not know how to put them into good use yet. Should they be tired after some outdoor activity, they would not have the ability to request to go home and rest. So, they simply throw temper tantrum again. 34

4. Jealousy It is extremely common for toddlers to have a younger sibling that their mommy cares for. When feeling belittled, they will seek attention and express it incorrectly by making a big fuss. 5. Battling for independence Our little friends are learning everyday and gradually wants to take control. Although we felt as much that we should decide about where to go, what to do, what to eat, and what to wear, little toddler would like to have a mind on her own. TIPS TO TACKLE TODDLER TANTRUMS They can be difficult but manageable. You know your child’s character so use preventive steps to avoid tantrums instead. 1. Express themselves Help your child to use words or new words to express themselves instead of negative behavior. Being a caregiver, it is easy for you to predict what she wants and introduce new words to help her express herself. Focus on the issue and not the child. Distracting them helps a lot too. For example if both of you are shopping and she spotted the soft toy which you cannot afford, distract her with someone else’s pretty pink dress while walking away. Talk for a minute and she will simply forget about the soft toy. 2. Self-centered This time you teach them concepts like taking turns, sharing, and caring. Make them aware that others interest should be considered too. Use simple 2-3 words to explain like ‘please wait’ and ‘take turns’. Be prepared to explain a few times before she gets the message.

3.Tired, hungry, or over-stimulated The question comes back to you again as a caregiver. When you go for an outing, always keep up with the time and be aware of when toddler will be hungry. Besides, they do not know the limit of when they will get tired or over-stimulated but you do. Time your outing. When it is time to go – it is time to go. 4. Jealousy Ensure your child that you love her just as much and will spend time with her after you attend to crying baby. As a caregiver – prioritize and try not to give unnecessary attention to the younger one. Checking baby’s diaper every minute will simply cause jealousy. Spend some time with little toddler too! 5. Battling for independence Yes, if she sees that pretty Dora swim suit, she may insist to wear it even though you’re shopping! Avoid the incident altogether by hiding it away. For food, she may struggle wanting to self feed but you will be worried about the spillage. In that case, give her another set of bowl and spoon with little food in it while you can feed her from the actual bowl. So next time if your toddler throws a tantrum, think about what you should do to ease the situation. After all – kids will be kids!

On the Night You Were Born By Nancy Tillman

The birth of a baby-”the one and only ever you”causes jubilation throughout creation in this quietly celebratory picture book from newcomer Tillman. Polar bears dance, giraffes weave to the sound of brass horns, and “the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered `Life will never be the same.’” Tillman successfully sidesteps the soft-focus sappiness that can accompany this genre. Her writing has the authenticity of whispered conversation; occasionally, she pauses in her exaltations of the baby to address the subject directly: “I think I’ll count to three so you can wiggle your toes for me.” Her strong, assured paintings truly set this book apart. The pictures subtly radiate golden glints of moonlight, and her almost sculptural rendering style gives her characters a hefty physicality that counterbalances the ethereal sentiments being expressed. Although one suspects that grown-ups will be most taken with the topic and treatment, this is one of those rare baby books that should make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy. All ages.

Jack and Jill Lived Really Lavish...

by: Essence Clark

66

SILVERSPOON SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER2010

www.silverspoonmag.com

J

ack and Jill did more than tumble down the hill… Just ask Sherri Blum, Certified Interior Designer and owner of Jack & Jill Interiors, Cyber Designs, and Sherri Blum Designs. Sherri has always been the artistic type and she loves putting her talents to work by designing beautiful rooms and paintings for her clients. Cyber Design allows everyone, in spite of location, the opportunity to have a celebrity style nursery or child’s room. All you have to do is complete the detailed questionnaire on the website and submit the required photos of the existing room- via email or fax. Sherri then will design a personalized room for you including a designer storyboard with a complete visual design package full of 20+ swatches, photos, list of products, prices, links to where the items can be purchased, and more. Sherri’s designs are more than breathtaking… I was interested in learning more about her background and vision for Jack and Jill Interiors: How did the concept of Jack and Jill come to life? In the late 90’s I began building Bare Walls Design Co. through which I was hired to decorate all rooms of the home. I was hired most frequently for dining rooms and living rooms at that time. However on a few occasions, I was hired to decorate a nursery or child’s room and quickly realized that it was these projects that most excited me. I would have so many whimsical ideas running through my head day and night that I could barely get to sleep at night! I loved painting on canvases, but loved painting on walls even more so. Children give us the excuse to be more whimsical and colorful than most clients are comfortable with in the rest of their homes. I’m a very whimsical and colorful person and so decorating for kids was a perfect job for me. I also absolutely love children. I enjoy interacting with kids to draw out their likes and dislikes and to see what is going on within their imaginations. When decorating for a child, I want to make the space magical and reflective of the great little person who will be living there. So I turned the focus of the company to children’s spaces and later changed the company name to Jack and Jill Interiors.

Were there any setbacks? I realized that by changing my business to include only children’s spaces that I would reduce my potential for income by eliminating the majority of the rooms for which designers were being hired at that time. But I also realized that back in 2000 there were only one or two designers specializing in nurseries so I could build my company with little competition and really make it work. It was a matter of good advertising and convincing clients that their children’s spaces were worth their investment. In many cases, the kids’ rooms were an afterthought. I believe that because a child has only one room in the home in which they can really claim their space and call it their own, that this space should be safe, comfortable and reflective of the child’s likes and dreams. Once this was pointed out to a few parents, they realized the value in investing their dollars in special spaces for their kids. And the rewards for parent and child were great! In the end, through our design process, the clients had often learned something about their child that they previously did not know and it gave the child/parents an opportunity to work on something together- it gave them quality time! My concept worked and it all came together for Jack and Jill Interiors. I’ve found a way to make a living while doing something that excites me every day! What was your overall vision? Has it changed? My vision was to decorate for children of all ages…I didn’t want the company name to be too nursery or baby related as to narrow the focus too much to only nurseries. I enjoyed decorating with toddlers and teens, too! However through the years, it’s become obvious that nursery design is where parents are most likely to invest their money. They are so excited about their new baby’s birth and very concerned about

www.silverspoonmag.com

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 SILVERSPOON

67

safety and warmth for the baby as first time parents, that they will hire a designer to create this space for them. The majority of my jobs really are nurseries afterall. What separates Jack & Jill from other children’s interior design companies? I was really a pioneer in the field. When I started, I believe there were only one or two other established companies focusing on nurseries and they were located on the west coast, where I am east coast based. In the past couple of years, the field has exploded. I receive emails and phone calls daily from women asking my advice on how to begin a children’s interior design company! I’m grateful that I got into this early enough to establish a reputation before this recent influx of nursery designers. My experience and established reputation, will hopefully continue to keep me in business over the years regardless of the new competition! I also believe that I’m one of only a few nursery designers who also have a product line to market. I have a second company, Sherri Blum Designs, which grew out of Jack and Jill Interiors. As I was suggesting murals to my design clients, they often expressed concern over painting these permanently on the walls. Maybe they were planning on moving in a year or two, or wanted to switch bedrooms when the next baby arrived. So I started painting large-scale wall hangings as a mural substitute. These canvas murals could easily be rolled up and moved to a new home or simply to a different room of the house. Some will even be passed down through the generations. My clients loved these and began telling me that I should reproduce and sell them. After some online exploration, there were very few options out there for children’s wall art. So in 2002 I started offering a few 68

designs online under the Jack and Jill Interiors name (My Topiary Letter Design was my very first to market, with my Storybook and Always Kiss Me Goodnight soon to follow) and it took off like lightening! I was being contacted by online stores and brick and mortar boutiques to carry the line. It quickly became so time consuming to hand paint each order, that I had to find a factory to reproduce my artwork and rent a warehouse space! I decided that I should separate the product line from the interior design company and named the new company/ product line Sherri Blum Designs. I was selling to over 200 boutiques internationally, as well as Sears, and had three showroom locations across the country- all within 3 years! My product line had grown to include wall art of all themes and sizes, clocks, lamps, rugs, pillows, bedding and wooden signs. Running a wholesale company began consuming the majority of my time and I found myself accepting fewer interior design projects due to time restrictions. Therefore, when approached in 2009 by Dish and Spoon Productions to license my designs, I took the plunge. I still create the original artwork, but they took over all the “headaches” of the wholesale business for me. They market, manufacture, warehouse and ship all of the goods for my brand. Now I have more time to focus on interior design and that makes me most happy! Do you have store locations? If not is that a desire of yours? Will there be a New York, Los Angeles, or Atlanta store? I have always dreamed of a Jack and Jill Interiors storefront! I have worked in retail and would love to combine my love of retail and design into a beautiful little storefront! I have even registered the trademark for Jack and Jill Interiors in the hope that I might even have the option

SILVERSPOON SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER2010

to make it into a franchise one day. I simply haven’t had the time or disposable income to explore the option yet. But I’m always dreaming and hope that it might happen one day. In the meanwhile, I’m thrilled that my products are being sold to consumers throughout the world in boutiques owned by others. How do you fit work in with your family life? I have a wonderfully supportive husband and four understanding children! Early on, I made the mistake of taking on more than I could handle (don’t we all?!) and had to force myself to set work aside at a reasonable hour and focus more on my family. My family really enjoys helping, too. My husband helped me with accounting and inventory work and my children would often be found packaging the artwork for me back when I ran the wholesale side of the business myself. With their help, I was able to take time to play. Now, the kids love helping me to come up with new designs for the artwork. In fact my boys practically designed the “Boys Toys” rug all themselves. I asked them to go to their rooms and bring me all the crazy little things that I’ve found in their jeans pockets over the years. They had a blast pulling out the little toy cars and snakes and then watching their own toys become incorporated into the rug design. It’s truly been a family affair! Now that I’ve licensed Sherri Blum Designs and have more time to refocus on the interior design company again, I’m able to handle most aspects of the businesses while the kids are in school. I make great use of my time from 9am-2pm and try to get the majority of my work done during that time. Many of my colleagues are on west coast time however, so I do have to conduct some business later in the day. But my children understand and I’m able- for the most part- to set www.silverspoonmag.com

my own hours enough that I can run them all to their practices, camps, sleep-overs and games. The dust bunnies might be breeding under the sofas due to a lack of leftover time for housekeeping, but we’re all happy and spending quality time together and that’s what really matters! Any suggestions or advice for aspiring entrepreneurial mothers like yourself who may feel discourages to pursue their dream because of their family responsibilities? Yes! I’ve followed my dreams and hope that each woman will find the courage to do the same. My best advice is to take baby steps and set realistic goals throughout. Don’t try to do it all yourself, nor all at once, either. Ask for help from friends and family and certainly ask for advice from those who have been down that road. You will save yourself much time and money by doing so. I was fortunate in that I had a friend willing to train me to handle my own bookkeeping and inventory. My closest girlfriends would often help me too. (I do believe their end goal however was to free me up for a shopping trip or a girls’ night out, but I appreciated the help, nonetheless!) When I found that I was burning the candle at both ends and I couldn’t deny that I needed more help, I looked at all the various aspects of the business and thought about what aspect I could most easily give up and hire out. It’s difficult handing any part of your “baby” over to another- so I chose to hire a housekeeper to help at home, instead. But just the relief of knowing that once a week my family home was spotless, was a great load off my mind. The housekeeper allowed me to have time for the family in the evenings rather than trying to fit in the cleaning, too. Later, when the wholesale business had become unmanageable for just my husband and myself, I decided to license my designs. It was a tough decision because it meant trusting another with this company that I had invested so much of myself in over the years. It also meant a reduction in income during the transition period. But I knew that my family and my health would suffer if I continued at that pace. I signed the licensing agreement and have no regrets with the exception of having to give up the housekeeper! Now I’m able to have my products on the market and also have much more free time for my family and time to take on new interior design clients. I’m thrilled! In the long run, I’m proof that you can follow your dreams, but you must always keep your priorities on track. Family must come first. When I started these companies, my oldest child was only seven years old. Now he’s seventeen and beginning his senior year in high school. Those ten years feel like they flew by

in a blink. I’m making sure to put time with the kids first, as they will be grown before you know it. I don’t want to have any regrets there. If you had a chance to do it all over again, what would you do differently? Hind sight is 20/20 for sure, but I don’t have many regrets. I had never seen myself, the “artsy fartsy” type, as a business woman. I learned so much about business through all of this and grew personally and intellectually. I can’t complain about that. If I could change anything though, it would be that I would not have allowed the wholesale business to take over to the point where I had to turn down interior design clients. Interior design is my love- not running a wholesale company! I would definitely have licensed my artwork much sooner. So now that I’ve signed on with my licensing partner, Dish and Spoon Productions, I’m so much happier getting back to interior design. My days are now full of time spent creating- creating new wall art or clock designs for licensing, and creating whimsical and magical spaces for children through Jack and Jill Interiors. I’m doing what I love and have found a way to earn a living while doing so. That, combined with a healthy, happy family and the loving support of my husband Eric, makes me one very blessed woman!

Teaching your Kids About Money: 5 Simple Tips by: Cornie Herring

You may get a surprise answer when you tell your kids that you have no money to buy something. They probably will tell you to charge on your credit card. For most of kids, money is for spending. Kids have this miss interpretation about money because most of us do not start talking about money with our children early enough. Kids need to understand more about money, they need to learn up the value of saving and investing, and it’s not just for spending.

with $30 than at 33 with $30,000. The experts recommend giving a dollar amount to match their ages. So a 10-year-old kid would get $10 and so on. This is money just for being part of the family and taking care of basics, such as picking up toys, making beds and not leaving towels on the bathroom floor. Give kids total control over how they spend their allowance. The whole point is to let them learn from their mistakes.

So, how to get start to teach your kids about the value of money? It is never too early for your kids to learn about the value of money and how to budget and save. To make thing simple, here are 10 simple ways which will help you to educate your children about personal finance and managing money:

4. Create opportunities for your kid to earn money Create opportunities for older children to earn additional money with jobs such as washing the car and mowing the lawn. This is the time to instill appreciation for a job well done and getting paid for your efforts. Teach them that they can get what they want through hard work, not because they are entitled to it.

1. As soon as children can count, introduce them to money. Take an active role in providing them with information about money. Take whatever opportunities come up to teach kids about money. Take them grocery shopping and encourage them to read the prices and explain to them why you want to buy things on sales and why you shop at a discount store & etc. Observation and repetition are two important ways children learn. So, you take whatever opportunities come to teach you kids about money and let them learn over and over again. 2. Learning by example Teaching children about money does not mean sitting them down every Saturday morning to a lecture on the vagaries of stock markets. In the main it means including them in the daily running of the household. This includes involving them in planning the household budget, explaining the differences between needs and wants, telling them why you have life assurance, and why you need a retirement plan. You also need to set a good example by creating a spending plan with your family. Show to your kids that setting up a budget doesn’t have to be complicated.

5. Teach them about budgeting & credit card Before your teenagers heads off for college, they need to learn before hand on budgeting and credit card which will help them to avoid plastic problems. College’s teenagers are the most favorite market for credit card companies. College’s teenagers will start to get pre-approved credit card applications in mail and email. You may want your kids to go off to school with a debt card instead of credit card. So that they can’t spend more than what they go in their account. Kids need to understand about money and how you get it into your hands as adults. Take whatever opportunities come up to teach your kids about money so that they understand that money is not just for spending and the consequences of over uses of money by withdrawing cash advance and charge everything to credit card can lead them to trap into financial crisis.

3. Give Your Kids Allowance Most experts agree that giving kids an allowance helps them to build money awareness. It’s better to make mistakes at 13
