O’luv Rodriguez needs no introduction. This seasoned and versatile pop sensation is recognized world over for being the Ambassador who made known Konkani to the global audience. While singers come and singers go, here is one singer whose groovy voice carves a niche into every heart and etches deeply into every listener’s mind as an unforgettable wonder. His enigmatic stage presence and interactive singing never fails to leave audiences screaming for more. A Chris Perry protégé, O’luv surpasses all expectations and only gets progressive with every album and is definitely instrumental to carry the Perry torch forward. In short, he’s an entertainer with the X-factor. He appreciates constructive criticism which only compels him to outdo himself. His stint at the Jazz festival in Amersfoort last year was a huge success followed by his star guest appearance in Qatar for the World Goa Day, left an unforgettable impact on every Goan that attended the event. A similar turnout was experienced during his maiden Live launch in Mumbai last December where he was given a standing ovation by the music frenzy crowd and the Guest of Honour herself, Mrs. Rita Rose, wife of the legendary Late Alfred Rose, who complemented Rodriguez for his spectacular performance and contribution to Konkani music. It was apparently the first time ever in the history of Mumbai that a ‘houseful’ crowd was experienced for a Konkani Concert outdoors!’ These were a few memorable reviews of his several successful shows last year. When queried about his future musical plans, he reveals that he wants to accomplish what no Goan has ever done before, Konkani will soon be experienced in a foot tapping, mind-blowing blend of fusion, and prefers to not disclose too much about his ongoing project which is currently in the pipeline. He also reveals that he has been approached to do a Konkani fusion with American singer K’loni Sky, talks of which are still underway. He also speaks about his Bollywood movie, Damaad Ke Intezaar Mein, starring the beautiful Rati Agnihotri in the main character lead amongst others, where he had lent his voice to all the songs in the movie under the guidance of music director Joaquim De Souza, and acted in it as well. The movie is directed by Shankar Madkekar and is produced by Aditya Creative Filmmakers. He hopes to see DKIM’s release soon. His calm intellect compels me to ask him what he intends to venture into, Konkani movies, perhaps? He impishly smiles, and is quick to retort, “And why not? I would love to attempt movies should an interesting script and a role of substance comes my way! All In A Day’s Wok, a name conceived by co-Administrator, Charmaine Fernandes, turned out to be a boon to many Goans outstretched across the world and is also now a household name. Time To Bell The Bleddy Bandicoot By Godfrey Pereira gpereira420@hotmail.com And now that Goa has a new Chief Minister, it is time to bell the bandicoot who has been borrowing into Goa's heart for so many years. It is time to Dig Under Kamat and bury him. Put Digambar Kamat on the stand and fry him in iron ore dust. Ask him how much iron ore went to China, a country that is India's economic competition. That is treason, almost... Ask him about all those illegal mines and the slippery twists and ugly turns of legal mining. The mining companies were given permits by the State of Goa aided and abetted by bloated power brokers in New Delhi. Who was the last Chief Minister? Who held the portfolio on mining? Whose hand was on the steering wheel of Goa? As {Past} Chief Minister he has to ultimately hold the buck. And big bucks he is holding, in his pocket. You can bet your bottom rupee on that. If Kamat says he did not know what was happening in Goa and tries to blame mining irregularities on his minions, well then he was not fit to be Chief Minister. I mean, what about accountability? Who should hang for this? And finally, if the Congress is pondering their loss, all they have to do is take the Goa example and examine it. A Company or Party is reflected in the strength or weakness of its personnel and what they do or do not do. Surely Congress movers and shakers squatting in New Delhi were aware of the audacity with which Digambar Kamat ran the mining operations in Goa. They had to have known of the collective Goan dissatisfaction, but they sat back and watched, because they believed that their power made them invincible and Digambar Dada was filling the Congress war chest with rich Goan blood. This man must pay for what he has done to Goa and its people. If the Congress party has any moral spine it should admit that this corrupt politician has hurt the party. But they will not because that would advertise their own compliance. The Goans are not stupid. They know what Digambar Kamat was doing, and although for years, the Goans did nothing radical to stop this fascist. Goa's new Chief Minister seems to have picked on the universal vibe in Goa. Shangri-la Goa is the last work of Gonzaga Coutinho, a musical document of folk songs and traditional Goa. At the concert that brings the Orient Museum, the musician has a set of tunes happy and serene, with a touch of Portuguese cultural tradition that is still felt in Goa. These are songs that have remained timeless and Gonzaga decided to write a musical dress up to date, while keeping the original root. The musical themes are sung in Konkani, Goan dialect, and was attended Gonzaga of Ram Kyao, William Carlos, Susana Brito, Group d EKVAT Casa de Goa, and an excellent group of musicians. This work was published by Anglo-American publishing ARC MUSIC and distributed to 60 countries. It is the third discographic work of Gonzaga, who has recorded with Rui Veloso, Ivan Lins, Dany Silva, Olaf Bilaspur, Sofia Vitória and other recognized national artists.

People in attendance were Linda D'Souza of Viva Panjim,Sylvester D'Souza of Sheela Restaurant in Vasco, Michael Mascarenhas of Flying Dolphin in Calangute, Peter Fernandes of o'Coqueiro in Porvorim and Edia Cotta of Spice Studio in Majorda. Representatives from different parts of Goa which we hope to build on in the coming meetings. Salient points discussed by Odette and Joe co- founder members of the Goan Culinary club: 1. Aims and objectives of the club were spelt out and explained. 2. Commitment and perseverance to actively promote Goan cuisine and raise the level of professionalism to showcase authentic Goan food. 3. All the participants were very proud that this initiative has been taken and want to contribute to making Goan cuisine world class related to the aims and objectives of the club. 4. Ideas were discussed and the conversation was enthusiastic and very informative with all sharing their vast knowledge and experience. 5. The next meeting would be held at O'Coqueiro on the 18th April, 2012 at 4.00 PM. 6. Informed them about the World Goan week in August 10th- 20th Aug,2012 and their initiatives during that period. Ideas and suggestions to be implemented: 1.Based on the aims and objective through cookery classes: Sylvester proposed cookery classes to teach the youth of Goa as he strongly believes that they are the future, to which both Linda and Peter volunteered to do demonstrations on Goan food.
2. To evaluate the authenticity of flavours used in Goan masalasit was agreed that samples of different masalas would undergo ‘blind tasting’ where in knowlegable members of the Goan community would be invited to give their views on the same. Reichade masala is the flavor for the next meeting. 3. To ensure that old traditions of Goan cuisine are recorded for posterity the members will research and discuss Grandmother’s preparations in the meeting to follow. Regards Joe Mascarenhas
GOANKAR OWN ACADEMY recollection day by Diana Joseph A most befitting manner to celebrate the Lenten Season was thought by the Executive Management Committee of the Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) on the 3rd of March 2012 to visit St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Akhtar Colony and spend time in prayer collectively as a community. The journey started from Our Lady of Fatima Parish/St. Patrick’s Parish at the designated pick-up points arriving at St. Anthony’s Church where the Parishioners from St. Anthony’s assembled to embark on this most looked forward to trip. There were 2 busses full of ladies and a few gents of diverse age and background, you could even find 3 generations together there as Grand moms, daughters and granddaughter came together to attend this spiritual experience along with some team building activities. Diana led the group in the Cantt Bus in prayers while the other Bus prayers were led by Elizabeth Goveas as we started to move towards our destination. As soon as the bus started moving we were treated to breakfast of fresh delicious Sandwiches Chutney & Egg and Juice packs. The excitement of the participants on arrival at the St. Peter’s Church premises increased when they entered this amazing church which was so beautifully built in the heart of Akhtar Colony. It is an extended wing of the St. Paul’s Parish, Mehmoodabad which exists for over 40-45 years back seeing some very distinguished Parish Priests among which were Fr. Lybarius, Fr. Wink, Fr. Louis Andrew and many many more who worked very hard to establish and further expand this parish. The participants were very impressed by the interior of the Church which gave a majestic appearance. The exterior was also as impressive with its 4 domes and large crucifix’s on each dome standing high in grandiose and splendor. Before we could all settle down to a day of Recollection, there was a session of photographs which was so enthusiastically taken by all to capture the beautiful church in their memories. The Blessed Sacrament was exposed in a separate room with an alter built in honor of the Blessed Sacrament with a very quite environment to reflect and pray. The Stations of the Cross was very solemnly recited along with hymns in Konkani. The mass intentions were also read out by Rev Fr. Mario. Participants offered masses for deceased members of the family and friends as well as thanksgiving for various favors received. Holy mass was presided over by Rev Fr. Mario Rodrigues and readings were done by Melba Pinto and Claudette Santamaria. The intentions were done by Elizabeth Goveas. After the mass there was a mingling of participants as we all had to gather in the community hall which is a part of the St. Peter’s church where a very beautiful Gorroto is made in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. Many people took photographs at the Gorroto. A token of thanks was presented to Fr. Mario for facilitating our group in this beautiful church for Recollection Day. Coupons for lunch and snacks along with a crossword puzzle was distributed to all the participants to stimulate their brains and also reflect on the Lenten season. The words given in the crossword puzzle were all relevant to Lent. It was truly a very good exercise. The speakers on the occasion were Deborah Santamaria President and Marshal Fernandes Vice President, Goinkars Own Academy. We were informed about the upcoming events and the BLOG created for the Goinakrs own Academy was introduced to us. We were then directed to make a queue for collecting our sumptuous lunch of White rice, delicious daal and superb fry fish and papardums along side salad and pickle. Everything was so superbly planned and thought of. Post lunch we had another very stimulating activity which was known as the Chinese Whispers. It was a lesson in communication, to see how well we use our listening skills and passing on the correct information. By far only one team came up with the correct message the others were hilarious which left the entire group in splits of laughter sweet packets were distributed to all the groups. Lucky draw was held in which many people were accommodated, the first lucky draw prize was won by Mrs. Rita D’Souza and many more followed, among whom was Mrs. T. C. Jacobs who really enjoyed the Recollection Day. We once again made a queue and were treated to yummy tea and snacks. We ended with prayers and hymns in honor of our Lady at the Grotto. We all reached our destination in no time by the Grace of God and were refreshed with the spiritual awakening and stimulating activities of the Recollection Day organized by the Goinkars Own Academy. Kudos to Debbie and her team for arranging the whole event in a most apt manner with every little detail taken care of. Português Baçaím (Vasai) The Roman Catholic Diocese of Baçaím (Vasai) (Latin: Vasaien(sis)) is a diocese located in the city of Baçaím (Vasai) in the Ecclesiastical province of Bombay in India. Baçaím was the capital of Provincia do Norte of the Portuguese Índia. It was one of the Richest Colonies of the Portuguese Empire. Baçaim was the most important settlement of the Portuguese in the Western Índia. As Baçaim prospered under the Portuguese, it came to be known as Corte do Norte ( Court of the North). It became a resort to The Fidalgos ( Portuguese noblemen ) and The richest Merchants of Portuguese India. Baçaim became so famous that a great Portuguese man of Baçaim would be called Fidalgo ou Cavalheiro de Baçaim ( Nobleman of Baçaim) Goa lying farther to the south in many ways Baçaim was Velha Goa's(Old Goa) rival in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for its beautiful churches, Buildings & Universities. The decline of the Portuguese power in Orient and the transfer of Bombaim (Bombay) to the British in 1665, weakened Baçaim, the city was attacked many times by the Marathas. In February 1739, the Marathas attacked Baçaim, and after a desperate resistance, on 16 May 1739, the last Portuguese upholders, signed the surrender. The Portuguese, left Baçaim on 23 May 1739. The Glory of Baçaim was Lost Forever.
Our lady of remedios, remedy 1576 The parish of Our Lady of Remedy was the second parish to be separated from the mother of parish ST. Thomas, Sandor. Fr. Lobo Cardozo started the work on the church at Remedy towards the end of 1576. It was completed during the term of Dom Luis d'Athaide who was the governor from 15771581. The main benefactress of the church was Donna Anna Ortiz about whom nothing much is known. The Dominicans founded the church dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies outside the fort. Vasai was invaded by Moghuls, Arabs and the Marathas; they looted the churches of St. Thomas and Our lady of Grace, but left the church of Our Lady of Remedies untouched. However, in 1690 Kakaji, an invader pillaged Vasai and the Dominicans had to leave. The first secular priest was the Vicar of Holy Cross, Nirmal. The present church was rebuilt in 1939. A fire burnt down its beautiful main altar and the present altar was transferred to this church from the Bhuleshwar Cathedral of Bombay, when the latter was closed down in1941. The parish celebrated its fourth centenary in October 1977. The church was later extended with North and South wings. Hara Bara Kebabs Recipe Indian Cooking Recipe: Hara Bara Kebabs The following are the instructions on how to cook delicious Indian food: Hara Bara Kebabs Ingredients: a. cup Grated cheese 2. 4 cups Chopped Spinach a. cups Water b. slices Bread c. teaspoon Green chilli paste 3. 1/2 teaspoon Garlic paste a. teaspoon Ginger paste 4. Oil 5. Salt Method of Preparation: Wash the spinach leaves. Drain. Add 2 cups water and cook uncovered in a pan for about 5 minutes. Add the spinach in a bowl of ice cold water, keep for 5 minutes and remove squeezing out all the water. Soak the bread slices in water for 4-5 minutes, squeeze out the water and mash. Combine the spinach, cottage cheese, mashed bread, green chilli, ginger-garlic paste and salt. Make a smooth mixture without adding any water. Cover and refrigerate for 30-40 minutes. Divide the mixture into 12 equal portions. Shape them into kebabs with oily palms. Heat oil in a frying pan. When the oil smokes, add 2-3 kebabs and deep fry till golden brown. Serve hot with chutney or ketchup.
GOAN DISH Goan Egg Curry Recipe Indian Cooking Recipe: Goan Egg Curry The following are the instructions on how to cook delicious Indian food: Goan Egg Curry Ingredients: A 6 no: Eggs-full boiled and shelled 1. ½ cup: Coconut cream 2. ¾ cup: Coconut-grated a. cups: Grated tomatoes 3. 6 cloves: Garlic a. tsp: Chopped ginger 4. 2 cups: Grated onions 5. 2-3 no: Green chilliesslit 6. 2 tbsp: Chopped coriander leaves, for garnish 7. 2 tbsp: Cumin-roasted a. tbsp: Tamarind paste 8. 2-4 no: Whole dried red peppers-roasted a. tbsp: Coriander seeds-roasted b. tbsp: Poppy seeds-roasted 9. 8-10 no: Curry leaves a. tsp: Garam masala b. tsp: Turmeric 10. ¼ cup: Oil a. ½ tbsp: Salt Method of Preparation: Grind the coconut, garlic, ginger, and the roasted ingredients to a fine paste. Heat oil, add onions and curry leaves and stir fry, till the onions are a golden color. Add the tomatoes and stir fry till fat separates, and add the ground paste, garam masala, turmeric and salt, and stir fry till fat separates again. Add about 2 cups: water and mix well. When it comes to a boil, lower heat and simmers8-10 minutes. Add coconut cream and tamarind bring to a boil, and then simmer 2-3 minutes. Add eggs and serve hot garnished with the coriander leaves.
PORTUGUESE CUISINE 1 cup onions 1 tsp olive oil ADD TO SHOPPING LIST 1/2 lb ground beef 2 tsp cumin 2 tsp wine vinegar 1 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 11 oz Thin-crust pizza dough DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 400°F. Saute 1 cup onions in 1 tsp olive oil over medium-high heat, 3 minutes. Add 1/2 lb ground beef and brown, 5 minutes. Take off heat. Stir in 2 tsp cumin, 2 tsp wine vinegar, 1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper. Stretch an 11 oz package of dough to form a 16" x 12" rectangle. Cut into 8 equal pieces. Spoon beef mixture on top of each piece. Fold in half diagonally and crimp edges to seal. Put on a greased baking sheet. Coat with cooking spray, poke with a fork, and bake 10 minutes.
