Master thesis Project Type: Emergency architecture Location: South Italy Date: 2016 More Info: https://issuu.com/silvia.pusceddu/docs/thesis_1
Nowadays there are several emergencies to overcome; natural disasters, wars, informal settlements, migration and so on. This thesis seeks to investigate a well-established reality: the housing conditions of seasonal migrant workers in southern Italy.
to the context.
The agricultural workforce in Italy is mostly made up of Africans and Eastern Europeans, ready to work hard to send some money to their families. They live and work in precarious conditions below minimum standards of human dignity. They are called “invisible” because few people know their difficult reality.
The space and the formal aspect of the architecture designed involve a large number of workers. They can live in a healthy, pleasant and functional environment,withhigh-energy performance.
Following the proposed solutions, the design challenge is to ensure maximum density, flexibility and to reach the living comfort by considering the environmental, architectural and social point of views.
The architectural choices are targeted in order to involve different actors: the inhabitants of the “ghettos”, who Underpaid and exploited, their work are inserted in a participatory process situation negatively affects their housing and have the chance develop a sense conditions. of belonging; public bodies, who are In fact they are forced to live in informal provided with the opportunity to make settlements without basic services. the reception not only as a charitable Their dwellings are shacks made out of action but also as an investment and a waste materials. resource for the site. NEW CHILDREN’S LAND
A New Kindergarten for the Um al Nasser Community
14
Professional work Project Type: Humanitarian architecture Location: Um al Nasser, Gaza Strip Date: 2016 More Info: http://www.ar-co.org/
The new children’s land is a kindergarten for the Um al Nasser community designed by Arcò and promoted by Vento di Terra NGO. The project is built using local matirials, low tech and low cost solutions. The walls are made of compressed earth blocks and plastered with mud. Key element of this project is the Nubian Vault, an ancient technique that rappresents an innovative solution for the Gaza Strip. As the walls, it is realized with compressed earth blocks. The building satisfies the criteria of bioclimatic architecture. The goal of this project isn’t only a environmental sustainability but also a social sustainability. For this reason Arcò realized an instruction manual to passing new technical knowledge on the local comunity.
I worked in the executive phase of this project and in drafting instruction manual of the Nubian Vault.

WINE CULTURAL CENTRE Cantina Valpolicella Negrar
22
NEGRAR VALPOLICELLA CANTINA
YAC competition Project Type: Wine Cultural Center Location: Verona, Italy Date: July, 2014
Valpolicella is one of the oldest wine producing areas in Italy. The Cantina Valpolicella Negrar is a cooperative located just a few kilometers from Verona, near Lake Garda. Since 1933, people here have shown high dedication to the production of quality wines, a true and sincere expression of the land from which they were born. The winery excels in producing classical wines and the top label is Amarone. The redesigned Cantina Valpolicella Negrar is a new architectural manifesto - carrier of quality. Wine production area is not extensively modified and can be accessed in several parts by the visitor. In particular, the visitor has the opportunity to appreciate some critical aspects of the Amarone’s making process with a dedicated passageway. After the reception area, the visitor can have a look at the fruit storehouse, at

the heart of the Amarone production process, and later on taste a glass of wine in a marvelous large terrace, with a very nice view of the vineyards. The visitor then moves to the grape pressing section, the bottling area, the storehouse and finally ends the tour in the wine shop. The visitor can eventually appreciate some of the typical foods of the Valpolicella area in a charming restaurant, with a view of wooden vats. The winery is redesigned in a contemporary prospective, in which wine production is associated with other promotional, recreational, interactive and cultural activities. The architecture is simple and linear and well integrates in the vineyard texture. The street-side view is appealing and stimulates the curiosity of visitors who want to know more on prestigious wines of the Valpolicella area.

BARGELLINO
An urban reactivation for a Ghost Town
26
Academic work Project Type: Urban Reactivation Location: Bargellino, Italy Date: July, 2013
The Bargellino is a post-industrial area located between Bologna and Calderara di Reno. It is situated in a strategic position near the airport, a perfect location for its future extension. This area is currently a ghost town; there aren’t people around, there aren’t places where people can meet and live well like cinemas, theatres, restaurants, parks, ect. The idea is to regenerate the Bargellino area with the propose to creating a dynamic and adaptable metropolitan area. Young entrepreneurs, businessmen, students and visitors will be attracted by this place where they will find innovative activities, job opportunities and leisure spaces. The generation of a new commercial, residential, tertiary and leisure area becomes a catalyst that triggers the interest of a vibrant community. In short, the Bargellino is planned to be a recognizable landmark within the whole urban landscape between Bologna and its airport.

Ulysses, the traveler, is the cross-cultural hero in search of the authentic self. Ulysses is also human, he summarizes the merits and defects of the common man. He is the man of all time. Here it tells the adventure of the Sirens, an adventure made of seduction, of a need for knowledge, of an irresistible impulse to the meeting with perdition. The hero par excellence, as a human being is completely overwhelmed by temptation and, while tied, he nevertheless tries to escape. The sirens, elegant women with long hair, sing a bewitching melody that seduced all men who had first met.
