Mengyao Hou Date of Birth: 12.04.1991 Telephone: +46 737323597 E-mail: houmengyao0412@gmail.com I believe that architecture is not only about space, structure and materials, but also about how people live their life. There are many approaches to architectural design, while the task of architect is to find out the best way for both now and the future.

“A Web of Care” Future Healthcare Building in Gothenburg Area
The purpose of this Master Thesis is to formulate a building network of healthcare within a community in the near future to find a better way for cooperation between different facilities as well as dealing with people’s health problem, especially for elderly people. It aims to develop future scenarios for reflection of how healthcare may evolve and what future needs of elderly people and various building types are for healthcare.

[ Research ] I did both literature studies and case studies, to explore how the healthcare system is in Sweden now, and how it will be in the future, as well as some relevant practical examples. The aim is to formulate the future healthcare system diagram and what architectural elements I would like to emphasize in the building design.
The new prototype is an integrated building combined with different functions related to healthcare. Not only provide all people user spaces, but also offer workspace for healthcare staffs of all kinds. Focus on primary care, but more than that.
Compared with previous diagram of healthcare system in Sweden, I formulate a new system of healthcare in Sweden which can be realized in 30 years:
Fot the building itself, there are five elements that i’d like to emhpases. Sunlight, home-like atmosphere, integrated, common space and smooth cooperation. The main idea is to create a building with different functions inside, but all parts have been united into one integrated building. For each unit, they have their own circulation, and for the whole building, there will be a publice circulation connected them all. There are also common space for each part and a public space for the whole building. Everywhere people can get to, there is daylight and also possibliy nature in their view.
[ Form ]
In the future, primary care will mostly move to people’s own home and take up a less propotion in the whole healthcare system, while home care or self-care become more important. So, the healthcare mall can be regarded as a transition when this change happen. For the large scale, links between healthcare facilities are still out there, but there will also be invisible links via digital tools that connect all communities and healthcare facilities.

1. Spcae for parking and main entrance to the building
2. Different height of building parts according to sun path
3. Function connections fit into the site
4. Spcae distribution for different functions according to connections in former diagram
5. Height of different building parts following the pattern of surrounding buildings
6. Create a welcoming entrance
7. Outside courtyard of greenry for the whole building and inside couryards of daylight for each unit
8. Lift one side of roof to create slope roofs, which is easier for rain and snow
9. Completed form of building

For the location, I chose Frihamnen area, and it aims to be a mixed city for everyone. The development of Frihamnen will not be fully planned. Instead it will be a test arena for innovative urban development, which means that the municipality intend to dare to test new untried methods in order to create a compact, sustainable and modern city district. So, it is suitable for my kind of project. In the future, around 15,000 people will live here, and an equal number will work here. The future planning make Frimannen area a modern community. Most buildings are apartments of 4 to 15 f loors, but the detailed building planning is not settled. So, there are not too many restriction regarding my Master Thesis project.

[ Flexibility ] These are different areas of room space according to the program. I listed room functions with relation to healthcare space, staff space and support space, which will be the main space in the building. This means most rooms are flexible and can be further reformed if needed. Flexibility is an important issue in future healthcare facilities. As the main function space can fit into the same or similar area, transformation will be made through moving some furnitures or removing/adding walls, as well as changing equipments and technical installations. In the future, primary care will mostly move to people’s own homes. That is to say, for healthcare staffs, the healthcare facility is mainly a place to work but not meet patients that often. They will work here and have virtual communication with their patients as well as remote meeting with other colleages. For visitors (both patients and healthy people), they go to the facility to have ezamination or treatment as well as regular health condition check/assessment, after having virtual care at home through digital tools with their doctors.

Gamla Gibraltarvallen
First we wanted to make the project to be in small scale, maybe many small buildings. We also wanted to design it so that you could reach all the common spaces without the need of going outside. Contradictory maybe but we created one large single unit and with some clever design ideas we could break down the scale and create a feeling of many smaller buildings. A third conceptual idea we had in mind was that we wanted to frame Gibraltargatan and make it more of a city-like street. This is the reason behind the long heavy building facing Gibraltargatan. It also functions as a shield for the courtyard making it a quieter place.

The idea of moving to a trygghetsboende is to get the benefits of a community where the architecture makes it easier to socialize with your neighbours. Gamla Gibraltarvallen provides the residents with a lot of possibilities for recreation with the shared dining room, hobby room, organized activities, green houses, rooftop garden, gym and spa.

Tranquility & Brightness Wedding Pavilion in Gรถteborg Western Coastline Type: Culture / Competition Tutor: Sten Gromark Time: 05.2016 - 06.2016 (1 months) Location: Heden, Gรถteborg, Sverige Category: Academic / Group work (partner: Qiaoyi Tong)
This wedding pavilion is for ceremonies only and has a strong sense of memory. The site is located on the western coastline of Gothenburg, calmly standing on the hill and facing the sea. People stepped into this area can be touched deeply by the quiet, peaceful and timeless atmosphere. Therefore, our aim is using our design to strengthen the tranquility and brightness brought by the environment. 23 | 24

To achieve tranquility, we choose simple axisymmetric form without redundant details and decorations. This kind of abstract geometric shape have strong memorial quality and weaken the effect of time to reach a kind of timelessness. When you meet this building, you can focus on your mind, thoughts or memories without any disturbances. To achieve brightness, we use large glass curtain wall to bring the light and view in. In the distance, the great ocean stretches away to meet the sky, and the sky full of light jump down into the ocean.
When analyses the environment, there is an axis connected the city and the sea, which is a critical part of the design. One of the main quality of city is rumbustious, so the sea is serene. Also, we can regard the city as reality then the sea as ideality. In this way, when the bride and the groom walk into this wedding pavilion, they come from the city to the sea, thereupon they put the rumbustious and passionate love down for a moment to embrace the serene love of marriage. Then finally they are announced to be together in front of their families and friends, they face to the reality of life but also keep the ideality of love in their mind.

No.4 Dimension
This station design is located in a medium city. When it comes to a passenger station, I came up with the word "movie" in my mind, because I regarded the individuals' movements in the passenger station as a series of spots in a movie. So I focused on not only space but also the relationship between space and time in this design, and the NO.4 dimension here is "time". Accounting to individuals' movements I saperated the space into different types and it's just like the space changed with time went by and with passengers moving.

The curved surface is twisted almost ninty degree so that it would be hard to build. The first step is to devide this surface into a grid and then connect each point to make a mash, after which the curtain wall is able to construct. The final outcome is a space truss structure. SECTION A

This is a commercial renovation project I have particpated during my internship in RSAA (Beijing), where I worked as a design team number to express my thought and formulate different proposals. Located in the new district of Tianjin, this building would be developed into a appealling commercial center of this area. The original architecture were two seperate buildings and we made them into one building with an atrium as the core space for public. [ Concept ]
It was a very interesting experience to work with two professional English carpenters along with other students. The Bee-Connected project is designed by White Arkitekter, cooperated with Chalmers. We assembled the units in workshop at Chalmers, then painted them with different yellow colours, and finally built the whole thing on site. The exhibition started from 4th June, 2016, on the Avenyn near Valand, then it scheduled to be moved to other cities in Sweden. [ Photos During Work ]
