Silvia Giachetti 2018
My name is Silvia Giachetti. I'm a recent graduate in Architectural Design from Rome. I'm a curious person and usually I try to catch any occasion to learn. I believe that today's reality is governed by an infinite number of variables and that architecture as well has to be a system of different disciplines. Among these variables I would like to deepen the uses of the A.I. in the construction and urban planning sector to better respond to the needs of the present and future society. This portfolio contains a collection of academic, extracurricular and professional works that I've done throughout these past years. Thank you for your kind attention. P.S. The resolution of this portfolio has been strongly reduced to be able to sent via mail.

Re-balance an interrupted district Master thesis in in Architectural Design, Urban design and Mobility Strategies // Prof. M. Beccu, Prof. M. Cerasoli, Arch. M. Merlo january 2018 - september 2018 Hinge district between different quadrants of the city, the Appio Latino is daily crossed by the commuting flows that are badly absorbed by roman Public Transport network. The thesis aims to re-balance the double interruption of the district: on one hand there is a physical fracture due to the presence of the railway, on the other the interruption is dictated by the amount of traffic that travels daily in the district's streets. This fracture is exacerbated around Zama square, where the presence of a barracks moves away the city's edge, already divided by the railway tracks.

Urban analysis - Demand and supply of Public Transport
The genesis of the flows that affect the Appio Latino resides in the morphology and distribution of residential and tertiary areas. The Source-Destination Map of the flows was elaborated starting from the ISTAT's Commuting database, from which the main lines of the commuter flows are highlighted.
Source-Destination Map A comparison between the urban structure, the road network and the public transport network, highlights the lack of a transversal east-south link that can coexist with the untouchable presence of the Appia Antica Park. The flows, which lie on this line, convey to the only existing passages that are consequently constantly congested.

Impact of commuting flows on the Appio Latino
In the specific case of the Appio-Latino, the commuting flows of private transport take on two different physiognomies, "the funnel effect" and "the corridor effect". These two effects generate critical issues on the continuity of the urban fabric, forming traffic blocks at their intersections. corridor effect

Mobility planning as a tool for urban regeneration
The new mobility structure has is basis on a new hierarchy of mobility, which sees public transportation at first place. Two new corridors of Public Transport are identified: this system together with the railway and the underground forms a Public Transport grid. Two strategic nodes are identified: the first is located between the Tuscolana Station and the Ponte Lungo underground stop, the second one regards Zama square. On the latter node, the new railway station is expected to be installed and a new central site will be formed. Public Transport grid

Urban Node in Zama Square
Zama Square is located exactly between the two interruptions identified: the continuation of Tangenziale and the railway. The remaining fronts that border it are in line with the heterogeneity that distinguishes the district: high buildings and inaccessible areas alternate to form an incoherent urban fabric. The complexity of the area required to adopt multiple strategies to elaborate the requalification of the urban fabric in question. From back to front
Implement existing pedestrian routes
Form a continuous and diversified public space
The main objective of the project is to build a central place, composed by transversal and longitudinal pedestrian paths and able to reach the Appia Antica Park. It develops a concatenation of public spaces along the margins of the railway to reconstitutes a sense of urbanity and habitability. The project starts from the analysis of the existing city and it proposes to extend it with new buildings that implement the activities and accompany the citizens through the railway and the adjacent urban fabric.

Zama Railway Station
The railway station is the cardinal point of the new urban node. It consists in two bridges: one widens the existing bridge and the other continues the main front of the square. The docks are accissible through the two bridges while the main gates of the station are located on the two remaining sides. The pedestrian bridges maintain a public paths which is outside the station: these paths are strengthened by the presence of shops located within the station's structure.

Insurance Building Lab. of Architectural design 2M // Prof. M. Furnari march 2015 - june 2015 collaboration: Valeria Micara Ludovica Sodomaco Lately the Ostiense neighbourhood has been consistently growing. This led to even more investments by private and public companies in the area. One of those is a known insurance company that decided to locate its headquarters on the main street. The head office's main features are its visibility and recognisability. Nonetheless our project wanted to provide the citizens with a public space far from traffic for the citizens.

The building next to project's lot is occupied by housing movement
The project has to mediate the railway's presence in the city
Via Ostiense is the main road and it's congested
Via del Porto Fluviale is trendy street and an important front
Concept
The projects is divided into three distinct functional blocks: a travertine base, glass boxes and an over-standing volume. An atrium connects the three volumes. Over the base there's a public open space in which the different external surfaces are clearly visible.

Re-connecting the city Lab. of Urban design 3M // Prof. M. Furnari september 2015 - february 2016 collaboration: Livia Lozzi, Alessandra Scaccia Ilaria Mancini, Federica Natella Eleonora Velluto The Ostiense-Marconi area is located south west from the center of Rome. During the past centuries, the area has been a subject of transformations that left signs that are still visible nowadays. In the first decades of the past century, the area became an industrial site. From the second half of the century, the city expanded and the factories have been incorporated in the urban fabric and then abandoned. These subareas points out today's fracture in the urban fabric.

Urban analysis
These sub-areas points out today's fracture in the urban fabric. This is visible in the analysis that we made, where we underlined the districts, edges, landmarks, paths and the main nodes. Overlapping these schemes, the three sub-areas obstruct the connection between the neighborhoods.
Sanity and instruction's private services
Creative companies' private services
Urban fabric’s fracture
The Qgis's analysis outlined that the sub-areas's presence influenced the activities's distribution. There is a minimum number of business and residences so people don't walk through this space and there is less security. This situation facilitates the neighborhoods's introversion although these areas are densely inhabited and rich of commercial services. These parts of the city have the potential to be able to contribute to new public and private investments with a new urban structure.
Strengthen transversal footpaths
Supply new activities recovering the industrial buildings
Provide a new structure for future open areas
Buondary
Our project is based on realizing a mesh of quality public spaces around the subareas and inside them where is possible. The path will tell the story of the subareas to the city, but will be a part of the city. In this way, the path will work as a diaphragm between the surrounding city and the real content of the inaccessible areas.
Finding identity
Starting from the effects that industry had on the zone, we outlined for each subarea a prevailing feature. These are the countryside, the industry and the city. These features are connected with an historic age: pre-industrial, industrial and post-industrial. In each sub-area there will be a presence of the three features simultaneously. They are spatially developed as typologies as: parks, gardens, playgrounds, sporting areas, squares and boulevards.

Zoom - Montemartini Area
In the Montemartini area we designed a continuous public space that wants to connect directly Via Ostiense to the river Tiber. We have divided the area in three portions: the first is an opening from via ostiense to a web of public spaces, the second is a void in front of the Montemartini museum and the third is a square and a terrace on the Tiber. This last part is connected to the Gazometer area by a path and the perspective space between the buildings of the square leads the people to the river.
Temporary citizens Lab. of Architectural design 3 // Prof. L. Montuori march 2013 - june 2013 collaboration: Maria Giulia Contarino In Rome, during the last decades, the housing request had varied in both the number and the typoligies. Homes are a reflection of the way we live although they not always satisfy today's needs for this period is characterized by continuous mutations. The city around the project is densely inhabited and rich of public services. The project is designed to include temporary residences, working and common areas and an efficient access to the railway station nearby the lot.

The faรงade
The external faรงade is designed keeping the sun path and the views in mind. The building's faรงade changes depending on the landscape exposition. Travertino marble and glass will be predominant on the northern southern side, while the materials melt into one another in the cruces.
Ostiense Library Lab. of Architectural design 2 // Prof. M. Panizza september 2011 - february 2012 collaboration: Agnese Lanciaprima This library is planned to be in the south area of the city, more precisely in between Via Ostiense and the Garbatella neighbourhood. The urban space is fragmented. There are densely populated residential areas and other sections that are mainly intended to be service areas. The railway is another disconnecting factor. The project interacts with the surrounding context thus adjusting the inharmonious proportions. The peculiarity of the structure serves the purpose of being the next landmark of the neighbourhood.
Concept
Project is inspired by the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. The differently levelled surface is placed on both the library and the external space. Here the structure forms fountains, flowerbeds and playgrounds. The connections between the building and the public space is stronger and the lot is perceived as a whole.
Plans and 3D view
Relationship with the context
The extension of the building goes through all the length of the lot and it's mainly developed on one floor. The main path goes parallel with the facade and it will be always populated thanks to the different opening hours of the stores in it. The entrances are the only openings on the front and they're pointed out by the presence of secondary paths. Recalling the concept of the coast, the edifice is introverted: air and light enter only though the internal courtyards.
The internal space
The coast's concept is applied indoors through thematic halls placed on different levels. These halls face the central open space and an internal path leads to the architectural ateliers on the top of the building.

Intorno alle Mura di Roma Awareness on the degradation of the Aurelian Walls // Comitato Mura Latine september 2017 - present The Aurelian Walls represent a unique historical and cultural heritage, yet they are in neglected and degraded: they are an inert patrimony not integrated into the urban system. With the project Intorno alle Mura di Roma we want to bring the attention of citizens, institutions, public and private operators on an extraordinary resource, which should be rediscovered as a common good and re-proposed as a great urban project capable of interpreting and redeveloping the relationships between the city center and its first expansion. Walks, conferences, seminars and meetings with institutions are the first step towards a wishful participated project.

Ferrovie della cultura Promotion of strategic railway stations for the Appia Antica Park // Comitato Mura Latine march 2017 - today The project aims to promote a strategic mobility, for the Appia Antica Park and its surroundings, to citizens, public institutions and the companies involved. The stations promoted, Zama and Torricola, insist on existing railway tracks and want to form the backbone for the fruition of Regina Viarum Park. With this objective, several public and private meeting formulas have been organized up to the construction of a regional work table.
