The 2014 Interior Architecture and Design Graduation Project challenges the notion of existing building structures which operate on a large scale. Infrastructures such as an abandoned warehouse, a disused tube station and other derelict buildings are now revitalised through a consistent process of spatial experimentation.
The results of the Project reveal an array of design proposals and encompass a variety of solutions for different users: from Panopticon-shaped prison inmates to children with autism, and from Waldorf-educated children to cyclists. The intention throughout the process has been to discover, emphasise and expose the intimate idiosyncracies of each location in order to allow the new design to stand out from its original context.

River Colne Prison - Jess Willdigg My design brief is to convert the Gasholder site in Watford, into a prison, with rehabilitation facilities to help reform the prisoners and enable them to move back into society and remain in a non-offending lifestyle. The gasholder will become an important architectural substance within Watford, acting as the role of justice in imprisonment and rehabilitation. The prison will relieve a bit of pres-
sure on the already overcrowded prisons in England. The design of the prison should show the beauty of the gasholder, material and structure whilst, conserving its shape as the gasholder. The industrial materials and structure are going to play a huge part in the project, influencing the materials for the design.

The Timber Network - Antoine Proust This project called “The Timber Network is about giving a new interpretation to an old 1940 workshop, creating and growing connections between the users, the public and the existing landscape. The original building is an old factory that will be transformed to bring it a new life and a new skin creating a landmark. Playing with honest materials, the building will be improved in term of light, structure and space, creating a confortable work place with direct view onto the canal. The transformation of the interior will result in series of small
box offices for freelance designers cohabiting in a collective space. The existing roof deck evolves into a second floor accessible to the public giving the opportunity to enjoy the view onto the Regents canal and the Victoria Park. A bridge will be erected to facilitate the connection between both sides of the canal giving pedestrians a direct access to the building. The project can be seen as a result about how to connect natural elements, human activity and architectural elements together.

Aldwych Underground Hotel and Spa - Paige Evans The design Brief is to convert Aldwych Underground Station into a Hotel experience full of comfort and contrast. The Hotel will be used by tourists, London history/train enthusiasts and public. The purpose of this hotel is to provide the many tourists of London with an unexpected experience, while preserving the history of the tube station. The design and layout of the station will show original
features whilst transforming the atmosphere of the underground corridors and platform area. There will be a novel aspect to the design where the carriages of a tube train make individual rooms, however the elegant nature of the design will eliminate elements of pastiche and triviality.

Pipe Line - Ben Lott Pipeline is a response to the globalisation of the brewing industry. Over the years transnational corporations have become overpowering and now dominate the brewing industry. Mass produced beer is associated with a number of issues, including use of unnecessary preservatives and flavourings, loss of specialities and styles, unnecessary transportation imposed products. Pipeline looks to address these problems by positioning
a small scale craft brewery at the centre of the community. To ensure maximum public exposure to the brewery and bar, pipeline is located in an area of public interest, a leisure park in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

The Complexity Centre - Zainab Mohamedali The Complexity Centre is designed to enhance interaction between the community in Walthmastow. The structure of the building allows the users to re-engage indirectly with each other whilst enjoying the space around them. The void in the centre of the building is a mutual space that encourages indirect contact between the users on
the first floor. The overall objective of this scheme is to bring vitality back into the town of Walthamstow. The main goal is to cherish the rich heritage of this wonderful building while also ensuring it can work exceptionally well as a contemporary entertainment and sociable venue.

Gillette Corner, Isleworth - Harneen Kundi The concept of using concrete blocks is to celebrate a sense of ‘free space in the city’; being in one of the world’s busiest cities, residents of London rarely get the chance to really appreciate the grace of the city. The blocks represent the foundations of the city; the art work or sculptures that are then displayed on them reflect the expression of people from that city. Art work will be sourced from local artists and local community. exhibits will refreshed every 3
months. The second floor is the most creative out of all three floors and offers creative working stations. Here the block has both a top and bottom level. Top level is for more of an independent study and offers large tables for maximum productivity, individual work areas which are divided with a unique concrete shape that splits the top floor into several sized areas. Additional features are design equipment positioned in several points on the floor.

Spider Park - Ong Wei Shen The brief for this project is to create a new spider park in Welwyn Garden City. This new facility will give a unique experience about spiders. There are always crowds in the surroundings of the site due to the ideal location in the heart of WGC. The spider Park is designed for the use of humans
and spiders. It consists of cafe and shops in order to improve the business opportunities of the programme. The exterior of the site will be improved with welcoming ambience. Create stronger relationship between the bridge linking from the railway station and the site.

Saint Olave’s 8 Hotel - Viinc Yew This project is to convert a listed building located in one of the most preferred location in London into the most luxurious hotel in the world. As the hotel would be the new icon of London, their requirement is to create the most luxurious, and most expensive hotel brand in the world, which is also aimed to be the first and only 8-star hotel in the world. The Government of UK requires the design to be very unique from the
façade to its interior as it would become one of the iconic building of London. Besides, the design will need to preserve the historical aspects of the building while adding in the modern and high-tech elements. The design will also need to be partially or almost 100% sustainable and self-efficient.

Play Zone - Zhi Qin Tan The aim of the project is to create a space that combines 2 different category of spaces into 1. The design will facilitate the theme of “different perspective, different image”. The two main spaces in the project are “Productive space” where adults get productive either in their work or business; and “Play Zone” where children can have fun. After several assessment, the building structure was completely remade due to cost,
usability, and practicality. The aim of the overall structure is to create a practical, cost-effective, efficient which visually stands out.The challenge of the site location is the contrast of both adjacent buildings: old-school designs and contemporary designs. The building have to harmonize the huge contrast in design styles while maintaining its characteristics.

Mediatheque - Nicole Tang Ying Sin The building is located between the corner of Tooley Street and Berondsey Street. It is situated in as commercial area with office block surrounding building and within walking distance from London Bridge underground station. The concept of the building focuses on the contrast and transition
of light from darkness to brightness by using the reference of Pixelated. The design of the light well and side facade allow light and shadow changing throughout the day depending on the day and the angle of the sun.
