Minraed Arzhel and
Tabby Lloyd Dahlings! We are back and so pumped and ready for this next season of SIFF. Dare we say that this is looking to be our biggest and best festival yet! And.. this will be the final SIFF before the release of Sims4 so we plan to make it memorable. We wanted to kick off the season with a beginner’s guide to SIFF for those who for some reason are only just hearing about us now?! Meet the staff who are here to help guide you on your SIFF journey, and get some great tips from one of the Sims’ most watched machinima masters in an exclusive interview with Johnny - the creative mastermind behind Cleverbox Pictures. We look forward to seeing you all at this year’s Fall cycle of SIFF!
As much as we would like to take full credit, SIFF doesn’t run itself. Behind the scenes are always a group of dedicated support staff. We have our crew of SIFF staffers (shown below), the A team of Anches - reporter and photographer to the stars, and Ausagi - master of disguise and character consultant. Over at the Simatography website, you can always count on someone to help you out, which is usually Ballantyne or Cloudwalker who lurk there even in the wee hours when the rest of us are slacking.

Festival Poster Challenge Every great film festival has a great poster so for each cycle of SIFF we ask creative designers from the Sims community help us by creating their SIFF poster to be put to the vote of SIFF fans.
This time around the talent blew us away! By far this was the best overall showing of graphic arts skills. We thank everyone who participated for showing their support and passion for the festival through their art. We want to be sure all of the posters are honoured so you will see them in the following pages. Congratulations to the TWO winners this time - yup, we had a tie and couldn’t bear to give up one over the other. One we will use as a promotional poster and the other will be used as our headline banner art on several of our social networking pages.

What is
and why should you join in?
SIFF started as a machinima showcase and grew into something bigger than we had ever imagined. It is now more than simply a film festival, it is a celebration of the creativity of Simmers of all kinds. Our philosophy at SIFF is not about focusing on the winners. Yes, there are contests, and there is voting by the fans, but this is not our primary goal. SIFF is about participating in a community event and showing off your talents. It is for beginners and experienced artists alike - in fact we avidly support beginners and wish that more would participate. SIFF is a series of challenges, as you will see on the following page. We have challenges and fun for photographers, paparazzi reporters, builders, graphic artists, fashionistas, bands and musicians, sims personalities and machinima makers of course. SIFF is international - we have participants and staff from around the globe. SIFF runs twice a year and has been since 2010 which means that we are now on our 8th season! Over the years we have seen this talented community grow as our simified world has evolved and we hope that more simmers will hear about us and participate in this showcase of YOUR incredible talents so please SPREAD THE WORD! star struck exclusive interviews
Every so often we come across talented machinima makers th level. These are the machinima makers that inspire us and Jo them. I had the pleasure of meeting Jonny recently and gettin him tick. Cleverbox is best known for the successful series Alone, now in it’s third season. Aside from the series you will find Sims-related gameplay and newscasts too. With new projects underway it seems that Cleverbox could easily become one of your favourite go-to places for Sims gaming updates so be sure to subscribe. https://www.youtube.com/user/CleverboxPictures

hat have taken the art of machinima and story-telling to a new onny, the creative genius behind Cleverbox Pictures, is one of ng into his head a little so that we can learn about what makes TL: Tell us a bit about your real-life self? J: My name is Jonny Simms; I am a Sims addict and have been for the past 13 years. I am currently pursuing 3D Animation & Visual Effects and aspire to one day break into the business and carve myself a fully-fledged career.
TL: What started it all for you with Sims3 machinima? J: I decided to try my hand at movie making with The Sims 3. With a superior graphics engine and animations, the game was perfect for the story I had in mind, so it wasn't long before my idea came to life. I love filmmaking, and always wanted to tell my stories in a way that emulated television shows. With The Sims 3, I can create my cast, build my sets, and bring my ideas to the small screens of people's computer monitors. TL: You recently connected with Machinima.com, what does it mean for machinima makers to partner with them? J: I wanted to start taking my work seriously, and with the backing of Machinima.com I was able to create a brand that not only showcases my machinima, but also gives me the outlet to express all my hobbies in one place. There are many other networks out there, Machinima.com are the only ones I have had experience with. TL: Do you have any tips for machinima makers that want to venture outside of the Sims community? J: If you create a machinima series, movie, or anything creative, and it only gets 1 view, it doesn't matter. If you enjoy doing it, if you are pleased with how it turned out. Then that is more important than anything else.
FL: Do you have any words of advice for new Sims machinima makers to help them improve their skills? J: I have been creating machinima for a few years now (and even before that with The Sims 2) and I have been teaching myself how to use editing suites, production software, audio software etc. There is no one tutorial to take that will teach you all of these things, but practice makes perfect. I am not perfect; I know what I'm doing when it comes to editing, and I still have so much to learn. I have a machinima series where I can create a new episode every few weeks and learn something new each time. If you want to learn about editing, writing, filming, then you have to practice. Create lots of little films, see where you are going wrong, see what feels right, looks right, see what the viewer’s think. You can't just create a machinima film and be done with it, you have to keep going. If you want to create something worthwhile, then don't give up. Sims4 is coming soon. Will you be making Sims4 machinima? Yes. Yes. And yes. :)
SIFF extends a HUGE thank you to Jonny for inspiring us and taking the time to meet with us. Be sure to stop by YouTube and subscribe.
