COOLIDGE SQUARE

STUDIO 5 - TERON SCHOLARSHIP & BUILDING 22 NOMINATION Coolidge Corner at Beacon and Harvard is a dense urban fabric. As a result, there is no large public gathering space for community events. The project Coolidge Square proposes a new public square near Coolidge corner. A new recreation center and hub office space will be introduced into the area, drawing in the community. Welcome to Coolidge Square.

CREATING

By splitting the functions into two separate buildings and closing off the street, the buildings create the edges of a new public square.

ENTERING

The form is cut to provide access into the square from residents in the community.

CONNECTING

In order to connect the programs while reinforcing the square, connections will made above ground.

DUPLICATING

The buildings become microcosms of the square; gathering spaces are created within.

THE DANCING COLUMNS STUDIO 3

Paper has a unique characteristic that when it is folded over a curved crease, it has the ability to create elegant forms. The project - a music bookstore - uses these forms as a column facade. These columns will have shelves embedded in them, or allow people to walk into it to access books inside. The forms also gives emphasis to the artistic program of the building, similar to the shaping of an instrument from wood. The project also includes a residential unit above the store for the store owner and their Bernese Mountain dog.

GATES OF WESTBORO STUDIO 5 - SIMBA MAI & LARISSA RODRIGUEZ

Gateways reveal an entrance into a district. Gates of Westboro seeks to complete the missing edge condition of Westboro Village in Ottawa. The project proposes to take three elements from the good site - the gateway, program, and sunlight and introduce them into the bad site. This creates a new major entrance for Westboro, bringing new retail and people to the area, and allows the site to fully take advantage of its exposure to sunlight.

THE ‘DELOREAN’ STUDIO 4 - SIMBA MAI, DANIEL KASSEL, JAKE MURRAY, SAM SMALLWOOD The “DeLorean” is a collapsible display case that was designed to fit in a 1 m3 volume, but open up to display models and drawings. The shape came from discovering that three identical pyramids could fit in a cube, and that these pyramids could in turn fold into a table. From that table form, the opening of the doors by pneumatic pistons is the final gesture that would provide the viewing space for the drawings and models.

One of the requirements was that it could not weigh more than 55 lbs. In order to achieve that, wood was chosen as the material and a truss-like system was designed in order to provide a minimal weight and retain its strength.
