Situated in the hills above the Beautiful North Wales Coast Line, Silver Birch Golf Club or Betws Yn Rhos Golf Club offers a picturesque 18 hole golf course created by owners Bryn and Menna Jones, who established Silver Birch, a friendly Golf Club that welcomes visiting golfers of all abilities. Designed by Stewart Finney and officially opened in 1995, Silver Birch filled a definite gap in the region for a 'Pay & Play' Golf Club where players of all abilities could play golf to their hearts content, without feeling intimidated by their lack of knowledge or the rules, or etiquette.
In 2002 Menna and Bryn created the back-9 holes and whilst also being designed by Stewart Finney, this 9-hole course is very different to the original 9-holes; with the front-9 located on open pasture land and the back-9 having 6000 trees planted throughout all 9 greens, thereby defining the fairways and making it a more challenging course. The result is a unique 18hole course that players of all abilities will enjoy. At 3235 yds Par-59, Silver Birch is excellent for improving your short game, as well as being ideal for the more mature Golfer who finds the full length championship courses too long for them.
les......... ice is Yours!
You don't need to hold a handicap certificate to visit SILVER BIRCH GOLF CLUB; whether you are a beginner or an accomplished player....... everyone is welcome! What sets Silver Birch aside from other golf clubs is that you can choose to play the Front 9 or the Back 9 or combine both for a full 18 holes of Golf! As you would expect from such a qualityconscious club, Silver Birch boasts an experienced PGA professional Rhodri Lloyd Jones, who is available to give tuition to complete beginners through to scratch golfers looking to improve their game. Silver Birch Golf Club has built up an impressive reputation for the warm welcome it gives to visiting Golf Societies, whose members will be able to take advantage of the modern facilities, including changing facilities, locker rooms, a golf shop and a snack bar, that will be available in Silver Birch's new Clubhouse, which is currently under construction.
The friendly team at Silver Birch would be happy to discuss your individual requirements for a GolďŹ ng Weekend or Mid-Week Get-Away Packages for 2015. Silver Birch's short but challenging course usually takes a 4-ball 3.5hrs approximately and therefore can be played in a morning or afternoon session, leaving you plenty of time to explore this beautiful part of Wales. The team at Silver Birch can put you in touch with a wide choice of accommodation from camping and caravan sites through to Guest Houses and Hotels.

Introducing the Award-winning;
Clwb Golff Abersoch Golf Club It's no wonder the members and staff at Abersoch Golf Club are smiling as the Club has not only been voted in the top 10 courses in the UK to play under 6,000 yards but also, Abersoch has been singled out as the NUMBER ONE GOLF COURSE IN WALES by the Golf Yearbook Online. The senior management team at the Golf Yearbook Online were recently delighted to announce Abersoch Golf Club as the deserving recipients of the Welsh Golf Club of the Year Award for 2015. The Award reflects, not only the outstanding golf course at Abersoch, but the fantastic facilities that can be enjoyed by members and visiting golfing parties alike.
“W m ih ha m -n ibr u, n iie , Arso Gl C i frot ," Dai Davies.
On receiving the Golf Yearbook Online, Club Manager, Dai Davies commented: “We are delighted to receive the 'Welsh Golf Club of the Year Award' from Golf Yearbook Online. It does not only recognise the club's course and facilities but our developments in social media which has pushed Abersoch to the forefront of visiting golfers to-do-lists.”
"Societies are more than welcome here at Abersoch Golf Club and we are happy to tailor almost any package you require including food, accommodation, play on other courses, transport etc. We appreciate that many society golfers will be coming to this part of the world to play a number of our courses, so we have teamed up with our neighbouring clubs to offer packaged discounted green fee rates," Dai went on to say. "For many societies we can offer a discounted Bar card, enabling you to enjoy a reduction on the bar prices and we can also arrange minibus or coach transfers so that nobody is stuck having to drive." Located on the beautiful Llyn Peninsula in Snowdonia, North Wales, it comes as no surprise to learn the Club has been described by some visitors as “The friendliest golf course in Wales”; “a jewel on the Welsh Riviera” and “a fantastic golf course with stunning views”.
If you are organising a day for your Golf Society in 2015, Abersoch should definitely come top on your North Wales golfing list. Visitors are sure of a warm Welsh welcome at Abersoch and the Club's friendly team will ensure visitors experience such a truly memorable day they will want to come back again and again. Offering a challenging mix of 18 holes on traditional links and parkland, the course is a must for golfers of all abilities, as Dai explained in a recent interview: "Whatever your golfing ability our well-maintained course will test your skills. Take for example the signature 246 yard par 3, 3rd hole with elevated tee and panoramic views requiring an accurate drive downhill over both gorse and a water hazard to a sloping green with a bunker waiting at the back. Follow that with links holes hugging the coastline and contoured over a century ago through huge, natural sand dunes, accuracy is key here as wayward drives can be punished."

It's not just the challenging course that attracts visitors to Abersoch Golf Club, it is also the excellent facilities the club provides to members and visitors alike. These include a welcoming clubhouse, which provides the perfect relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a couple of drinks and a snack or meal, whilst contemplating one's round, either in the comfortable bar or patio area – ideal for for al fresco dining in the summer months. The club's Pro Shop enables visitors to browse a wide range of golfing equipment, accessories and clothing from leading manufacturers all of which is available at discount prices. Dai also explained that the green-keeping team at Abersoch is constantly improving the course with continued investment in new bunkers, machinery and drainage. Current drainage enables players to enjoy the golf course 365 days a year without the need for temporary greens or tee boxes. He explained that 'Abersoch offers a perfect blend of links and parkland holes with interesting and varied par three’s; tough, risk & reward par 4’s and a couple of par 5’s that need to be negotiated to get any decent score out of them.' “We may be slightly in the shade of our more wellknown neighbours but, once visited, Abersoch Golf Club is never forgotten," he concluded.

LINKS & INLAND LINKS GOLF COURSES: Linksland golf courses are typically characterised by dunes, an undulating surface and sandy soil unsuitable for arable farming but which supports the various indigenous browntop bents and red fescue grasses. The firm turf of links golf courses encourages players to adopt a 'running game'. The term, 'links' is commonly associated with coastal golf courses, often amid dunes with very few water hazards and trees. A links course requires a considerably different style of play than on other type of golf course; the nature of course features uneven fairways, large undulating greens, thick rough and small, deep 'pot' bunkers, whilst the lack of trees leaves the golf course open to the elements and many links golf courses experience extremely windy playing conditions. The ability to play low accurate shots is a must, enabling the player to cope with opposite wind patterns in each half of their round. Whilst an outward nine may require short irons, players may need to hit longer shots to cover the same distance during the inward loop of nine. Link greens are not often protected by front bunkers, encouraging players to play low, running shots into the large greens for the best results. Links golf course are most common in Great Britain and Ireland, especially in Scotland. The Open Championship is always played on links courses – the main feature which differentiates from the other three Major tournaments held in the United States. On the other hand, some courses located hundreds of miles from a coast can have all of the characteristics of a seaside links except for proximity to water; these are known as inland links golf courses.
HEATHLAND COURSES : Heathland golf courses are interior courses that are well manicured but lean more toward grass-and-shrub than tree-lined. The courses which are commonly associated with England feature gentle, rolling fairways; a prominent feature of some of the oldest golf courses in the UK, including past Ryder Cup venues.

MOORLAND COURSES :
Moorland golf courses feature tough grasses and heather plus gorse. The fairways and greens are set on peaty soils and the rough generally consists of heath or coarse grass with gorse. In recent decades, the replanting of moorland areas with coniferous woodland has changed the general scenic setting of many moorland golf courses.
Located in Brentwood, Essex; Bentley Golf Club was established in 1972. Designed by the Swan family who have designed a number of golf courses in the eastern region of England; Bentley is ranked as one of the premier golf clubs in the country and achieved a Silver rating in the HSBC Regional Course Rankings. The challenging par 72 golf course at Bentley Golf Club meanders through undulating terrain dotted with a wealth of mature trees and water features. Offering a challenge to the most apt of golfer, Bentley's magnificence is optimised by the course's signature hole, 16 – a par 4 acute dogleg to the right which leaves the player with two options for their shot to the green; to take on the long carry across the lake that fully protects the green or, alternatively to lay up and rely on a pitch and a putt to achieve par. Aside from the wonderfully appointed golf course at Bentley, the Essex golf club also features a thoughtfully designed practice ground for one to touch up on all aspects of their game pre or post round. In this day and age, it's refreshing to find a family-run business that still holds fast to traditional values such as honesty, integrity and good value for money. Yet this is exactly what you will receive from MacLeonard Golf; a forward-thinking company backed by highly experienced staff and modern support services. Originally run as a web-based company from the Channel Islands; MacLeonard Golf is now in the capable hands of Director, James Robert Berwick, who took over the reigns of the company 3 years ago when his grandfather retired. A GCA certified club repairer and custom club fitter/ builder, as well as being a Member of the Professional Club-Building Society, James is 'perpetually in pursuit of excellence'. ffer to all levels of golfer be it, the tour professional or the club amateur. MacLeonard golf grips are supplied by Golf Pride, whilst the company also provide numerous shaft adapters to fit Taylor Made, Callaway, Titleist, Cobra and more. All heads, shafts and grips can be custom-built to personal requirements and the equipment providers also stock 2nd chance golf balls from Titleist, Bridgestone and Taylor Made Penta. Shafts are supplied by Fujikata or tour preferred, UST Mamiya TSPX model; Nippon steel shafts from Japan and True Temper steel shafts which have a trusted reputation on tour, are also popular among customers. MacLeonard Golf sources components from some of the most reliable OEMs including Nakashima Golf and Sukira Golf who build great drivers, fairways woods and irons.
MacLeonard are also leaders in the field with producing Long Drive Clubs, many of which have been successfully campaigned to win both European and world long drive championships. Such competitors as Scott Smith with his record breaking 539 yard drive (on a fairway not runway) or Michael Lindblom - European long drive champion, not forgetting Adam Stacy - a home grown boy who was ranked 3rd in the world when using our Bang-o-Matic drivers.
Utilising such quality components and experience in Long Drive Clubs has enabled the company to create the MacLeonard Stealth Driver.
When asked what advantages there were to having a custom-built Golf Club, James told us: " Past experience has shown that it is far better to buy equipment which can then be expertly tuned into your swing and style, rather than the other way round. The best chance a golfer has to improve their game, and maximise their ability, is to have genuine custom built or fitted golf clubs.
So, what does it take to make an expert club maker? "Most PGA professionals are not professional club-makers, they usually have a good sound knowledge of how certain clubs perform and a rudimental knowledge of how to fit someone, but they are not the same as Professional clubmakers. Real custom fitting is a complex and scientific knowledge, requiring precise measurements, individual swing and physical parameters, he continued.

GOLFERS ARE SURE OF A WARM ‘C The fact that pop superstar Olly Murs has recently started playing golf goes to highlight the modern game of golf is no longer a sport enjoyed by the 'older generation' but today attracts enthusiasts of all ages, from all walks of life. It is generally accepted that golf has its roots in Scotland, where it was first played in the Middle Ages. Yet the game of golf as we know it today was very nearly 'snuffed out' before it had begun and it certainly had to struggle to be accepted, faced with so much opposition. This is highlighted by the various legislations put in place to make it unlawful to play golf. These include the 1457 Act of the Scottish Parliament, an edict issued by King James II of Scotland, prohibiting the playing of the games of gowf (golf) and football as these were considered a distraction from archery practice for military purposes. Bans were again imposed in Acts of 1471 and 1491, with golf being described as 'an unprofitable sport'.
Today, golf enthusiasts worldwide can choose from a wide spectrum of excellent golf courses throughout the UK. Whilst it may be just 170 miles long and 60 miles wide Wales boasts some 200 challenging golf courses, so you’re never far from your next game. And there’s quality to match the choice. Bounded on three sides by 870 miles of windswept coastline, it’s hardly surprising that Wales is famous for its inspirational links courses. From the Open Qualifying Conwy in the north to Royal Porthcawl in the south, a journey along Wales’ coast is a pilgrimage no links-loving golfer should miss.
The one thing all Golf Clubs in Wales have in common is the tr as it should be’ which means you’ll always get a warm welcom of the Welsh Golf Clubs........but you can expect a relaxed and

CROESO’, OR WELCOME IN WALES Along the way, you’ll find the iconic Nefyn & District. Set on a narrow strip of land projecting into the Irish Sea, it’s often likened to playing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Watched over by the imposing edifice of Harlech Castle, the rugged links of Royal St Davids never lack for drama. Other highlights include Aberdovey – beloved of legendary sports writer Bernard Darwin – and Pennard’s famous ‘links in the sky’. But links are only part of the story. Our golfing menu is packed with flavours to suit every taste. At mountainous Cradoc, mature-tree-lined parkland combines with soaring views over the Brecon Beacons National Park’s highest peaks. Straddling the border between Wales and England, hilltop Llanymynech uniquely allows golfers to play in two countries in a single round. It’s also where Ryder Cup legend Ian Woosnam cut his golfing teeth.
Laid out along the banks of the River Dee, challenging Vale of Llangollen is one of the country’s finest inland courses. In the south, Pyle & Kenfig blends nine parkland holes with nine of dune-studded links for the ultimate in hybrid golf experiences. The fact that, following Royal Porthcawl’s successful staging of the 2014 Senior Open Championship competition, this Welsh Club has been chosen to host the competition again in 2017 and the world-famous Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, was chosen as the venue for the unforgettable 2010 Ryder Cup, highlights the high esteem in which Welsh Golf Clubs are held within the sector.

Set in the stunning Carmarthenshire countryside, just 3 miles from Carmarthen Town centre, Carmarthen Golf Club is regarded as one of the finest golf courses in Wales. No surprise then it was recently voted Welsh Golf Club of the Year 2011. Established in 1907, the Club is no stranger when it comes to receiving commendations, having this year been awarded a ranking for the first time in Wales's elite course guide, as Darren Griffiths, the Club's Director of Golf explained to us: "We were delighted to be ranked as the 34th Best Course in Wales by the Top 100 Course Website, one of only a few websites that rate all the best known courses across the world. This high ranking would not have been possible were it not for the dedication and hard work of the Club's staff and members." Golf Societies and Corporate bookings are welcome at the Club every day throughout the year. Whether your Golf Society is looking for a brilliant Day Out or you are planning a Corporate Function, visitors are sure of a warm Welsh welcome at Carmarthen Golf Club, which offers a challenging course; carved through the Gwili Valley it offers a parkland layout that will challenge you and excite you at the same time. NORTHOP GOLF CLUB Gains Recognition with Prestigious Accolade
WELSH GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD 2015.
Most golf club members are proud of their club and none more so than the Members of Flintshire-based Northop Golf Club, who have combined their resources to secure a deal ensuring the future of the Club and its' challenging 250-acre course is in the hands of its' membership. Now running as a Members' Club, the new owners are already making their mark, as evident in the improved facilities now available in the Club and condition of the course, as Tony Godden, the Club's President, explained in a recent interview: "A tremendous amount of work has been carried out to improve the condition of the course and whilst a great deal of this was undertaken by our Members, outside contractors were also engaged to clear ditches and fill bunkers, thereby giving our Green Keepers more time to do what they do best - improve the quality of our greens. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that Northop Golf Club has been selected as the recipient of the
WELSH GOLF CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD 2015.
Sponsored by Golf Yearbook Online, this independent Award Scheme was established to highlight those Golf Clubs that have proven an ability to 'go that extra mile' to not only meet but in many cases exceed the expectations of the Club's members and visitors alike. Designed in 1994 by former Ryder Cup player and renowned golf coach John Jacobs, Northop's testing course offers a challenge to golfers of all abilities. A sign of the high esteem in which it is held within the golfing community is evident in that Northop has had the honour to be chosen to host the Welsh PGA championship, the
British PGA championship and the first ever European Challenge Tour Event to be held in Wales. Set in 247 acres of spectacular Welsh countryside, Awardwinning Northop's course still has all the ingredients that brought about this success; USPGA greens that result in 365 day a year 18-hole golf, championship tees that provide a stern challenge of the golfers abilities, whilst also being able to accommodate golfers of a lesser ability, because of the wide array of tee choices.
After years of turmoil, there has never been a better time to join this Award-winning championship Golf Club or bring your Golf Society for a day out they will remember for all the right reasons!
When asked why he believed the members would bring a rosier future to the club, Matt Pritchard Northops' PGA professional, said: “I think most golfers would agree that members who play on a regular basis are best placed to identify the changes needed on a golf course to ensure that it is both an enjoyable and challenging test of golf.” Adding with a smile, “Obviously with the input of the professional and green keepers!”
The new Clubhouse will also be home to the Club's Pro-Shop where visitors and members alike can buy golfing equipment, accessories and clothing from leading brands at a realistic price. Whilst the members have already identified the changes required to bring back the good times to Northop, I asked Tony if they had the business ‘nous’ to arrange the funding to bring about the changes? " Our members have used their knowledge and dynamism to both secure funding and adopt a robust business plan to push through the necessary improvements which include a great new Clubhouse, which will be up and running on Sunday 14th December, when we are holding a Golf Competition for Members but the official opening of the Clubhouse will be taking place in April/May 2015 when we will be hosting an exciting Pro-Am event.
In presenting this Award, the team at Golf Yearbook Online were particularly impressed with excellent facilities now available at Northop including its' stunning new Clubhouse. Nearing completion, this offers the first class Changing Rooms, a well-stocked Bar and comfortable Lounge, together with fully equipped Kitchen and Office.
On receiving this accolade, Tony commented: (Comments in here please)
When asked if the Club welcomes visiting Golf Societies, Tony replied: "We now have an extensive range of discounts and offers open to members, visitors and societies. Thanks to the excellent facilities in our new Clubhouse we can cater for 30 - 40 visitors and would welcome the opportunity to show visiting Golf Societies some true Welsh hospitality." Thanks to the new ownership, Members and visitors will also be able to take advantage of the Club's impressive new Driving Range which is due to be launched before January 2015.
