maintaining balance for ultimate health

When we hear the word “healthy,” most of the time we think about getting exercise and eating the right foods. But what about the other aspects of our health? Social/emotional health as well as mental health are just as important as your cholesterol levels and making sure you get up and moving every day. We can make sure we have a balance of the three aspects of our overall health by taking a look at the health triangle. Physical. The first aspect of the triangle is our physical health. Making sure we are eating a balanced diet, getting in at least 20-30 minutes of exercise daily and getting enough sleep are good ways to start. Maintaining our dental health, going for annual physicals, and keeping open communication with your doctor is also a great way to stay on top of your physical health. Social. Our social health can be kept strong by volunteering in the community or planning some social time with your friends and family. 2

With so much stress at our jobs and in the world in general, we need to make time to have healthy interactions with other people in a happy environment. Mental & Emotional. Taking some time for yourself, reading a book, meditation, etc. can help with your mental health. Keeping open lines of communication with your loved ones also helps with this aspect. If you feel you are depressed or have anxiety, therapy may be a good way for coping with your mental-health imbalance. It’s a great idea once in a while to really think about how you’re keeping yourself happy and healthy by asking yourself—which part of the triangle do I need to work on? Which is my strongest? Always take time to take care of yourself so you can have the best quality of life possible. Nikki Lian is the owner of CKO Kickboxing in Simi Valley.

Recipes that are made SO RIGHT, but taste SO WRONG

2 INGREDIENT STRAWBERRY POPSICLES Ingredients: 2 cups Strawberry Coconut Juice (16 oz) 1 lb fresh strawberries, cored and roughly chopped

Directions:  Spray two popsicle molds lightly with olive oil spray.  Add the strawberry apple coconut juice and strawberries to a blender. Blend until mostly smooth or completely smooth if you do not want any chunks of strawberries.  Pour the mixture among the molds. You will only fill up 2-4 popsicles on the second mold.  Place the molds in the freezer and freeze until firm, about 4 hours. To remove the popsicles run the mold under hot water for 10 seconds and then pull the popsicles out of the molds. Source: Half Baked Harvest, www.halfbakedharvest.com

SWEET POTATO BROWNIES Ingredients: 3/4 cup sweet potato puree 1 cup peanut or almond butter 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. flour 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips 2/3 cup granulated sugar of choice 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. cocoa powder 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/8 tsp salt Source: Chocolate Covered Katie www.chocolatecoveredkatie.com

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 F. Line an 8-inch pan with parchment paper or grease well. Gently heat your nut butter until easily stir-able. Then whisk it together with the sweet potato and vanilla extract in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, stir together all remaining ingredients – make sure that baking soda is evenly incorporated! Pour dry into wet (not the other way around), and smooth into the prepared pan, scooping out all traces of batter and using a second sheet of parchment to really smooth it down evenly. Bake on the center oven rack for 20 minutes. It will look a little underdone, but will firm up as it cools.

It might be due to the darkness that accompanies shorter days, or the invasion of warmer, comfier clothes into the winter workplace, but now is the time when long hours, slouching, slumping, and straining dominate the office. Clean up your act around the computer, before bad habits lead to poor health. Here are five ways to make sure your computer desk doesn’t become the death of you. 1. Give your monitor a second look. If your screen is planted directly on your desktop, it’s time to ask management for a raise - for your computer’s display. The top of your screen should be level with your eyes. If your screen is too low, your head points down, causing neck and back aches. 2. Poor posture? Take it on the chin. Poor posture is something that every office-based employee should consider throughout their day. Most people sitting at a computer get drawn into the screen, which means they crane their necks forward. The imbalance puts strain on the neck and spine. Chin retractions, or making a double chin, is recommended to keep the neck and spine lined up underneath. 3. Stand up for yourself. The modern workplace was built around the concept of sitting, but humans’ ability to stand goes back millions of years. Sit-stand workshops helped workers place 25 percent of their sitting time standing up, which can increase their sense of wellbeing and decrease their fatigue and appetite. 4. Move it or lose it. Why stand when you could walk? Many offices around the country are getting wise to treadmill desks, which can help workers burn 100 calories more per hour over sitting. 5. Pace Yourself. All work and no play makes Jack a bad employee. Whether it’s on their phone in the bathroom or on the computer or in their cube, everyone takes sanity breaks to check their Facebook or read some news. The Pomodoro Technique even encourages this kind of behavior by breaking tasks into “pomodoros,” intense 25 minute work bursts, followed by five-minute breaks. Contributed by: Chris Noell, Home Care Consultant Home Instead Senior Care Fall prevention has become the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. One-fourth of Americans aged 65+ falls each year, and more than 2.8 million injuries are treated in emergency departments annually. The financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 billion by 2020. Whether a fall results in injury or not, it carries a heavy quality of life impact. Many seniors fear falling and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. The good news is that falls can be prevented. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Prevent these falls with simple fall-prevention measures, from reviewing your medications to hazard-proofing your homes. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Keep electrical cords out of walking paths. Securely fasten carpet, rugs and carpet runners to the floor. Keep walkways and stairways free of clutter. Use nonslip mats in the bathtub and shower. Keep moving - daily exercise can greatly improve balance and strength 6. Increase lighting throughout the house, especially at the top and bottom of the stairs. 7. Repair or remove tripping hazards By incorporating these small tasks into daily life, you can minimize the risk of a fall!

Contributed by: Kaitlin Berezowsky Owner, Epic Fitness It’s no surprise that obesity is on the rise with terrifying statistics year after year. However, what might be surprising is one of the culprits contributing to this horrible epidemic. In recent studies, sitting has been identified as one of the biggest factors at keeping America obese and significantly increasing the risk for diabetes, heart disease, and physical pain. Busy schedules and the increase in technology play a big role in peoples’ inability to stay active. As experts in the health and fitness industry, we are able to recommend a few simple steps to stay fit at a desk job. Our personal mission as local business owners is to put Simi Valley on the map for being the healthiest city in Southern California. By implementing these steps into your daily routine, you will help grow that mission to contribute to a healthier and happier Simi Valley! Up Your Activity: Activity trackers make it easy to keep tabs on your daily steps. Week after week, try to increase your daily average. If you drive to work, park at the furthest spot and walk. Take the stairs whenever it’s an option, instead of the elevator. If possible, get out of your chair about every 30 minutes to make a phone call or talk to a coworker. Use the lunch hour to get in a quick workout at a fitness center.

Stretch It Out: Checking your posture throughout the day is crucial to help improve or prevent shoulder and back pain. Avoid slouching over your desk or computer. While seated, you can roll your neck, ankles, wrist, and shoulders every hour or so. In addition, you can also tighten and release abdominal muscles. While standing, you can use office furniture to prop up your foot and stretch your hamstrings.

Nutrition Matters: Save your waistline and your wallet by packing your own lunch and healthy snacks. Stay away from the breakroom and vending machines to avoid unnecessary grazing. By reducing your restaurant intake, you minimize your temptation to make poor food choices.

Make It Social: Chances are if you work in an office, you aren’t the only one who could use some activity. Find a colleague or small office group to take regular exercise breaks with to keep each other motivated. Results are proven to be better in groups.
