The Simi Store at Strathearn Park was modeled after the W.S. Keir general store in old town Simi. In the early 1900s, the W.S. Keir Store was located on the south side of Los Angeles Ave. at the corner of Fourth St. In the 1980s an old garage on Strathearn property was moved to the Park and repurposed as the ‘Simi Store.’ It served as the park’s Visitors Center for a time, and now serves as a store for Strathearn Historical Park & Museum.

We are very proud of the Simi Valley Chamber Tourism Alliance (SVCTA) and their efforts to increase lodging occupancy and boost business in Simi Valley’s leisure and hospitality sector. The SVCTA is focused on programs and services including filming in Simi Valley, tourist promotion activities, and marketing of special events and programs. SIMI VALLEY FAST FACTS Incorporated: October 10, 1969 City Name: It is believed that the name of the Chumash Indian Village “Shimiji” is the origin of the word “Simi” City Origin: Originally, this valley was inhabited by the Chumash Indians. They settled in two villages named Simi and Tapo. In 1795, El Rancho San Jose de Garcia de Simi was granted to Santiago Pico and Luis Pena by Governor Diego de Borica of Spanish California. This land grant, approximately 100,000 acres, was one of the largest ever made.

City Tree: Coast Live Oak. The Chumash Indians use the acorns from this tree for food. City Flower: California Wild Oak. The Chumash Indians ate vitamin-rich rosehips. Total Area: 41.7 square miles, located 45 minutes northwest of Los Angeles, in eastern Ventura County. Population: 129,426 (March 2016) Elevation: 700 to 1,000 feet.

This wonderful city has been home to my family and me for over 26 years, which is why I take everything to heart and always serve with passion. The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce is full of rich history and tradition. It has been the driving force to ensure that our local economy is strong and our community is prosperous and vibrant. It exists to support the business community and make Simi Valley “a beautiful place to live,” as the motto created in 1960 stated. The Chamber exists to build and strengthen connections amongst our members, and to create value in our community by helping businesses thrive. The strong partnership between the Chamber and the City of Simi Valley allows the Chamber to serve as the Visitor’s Center, creating a valuable resource for all things Simi Valley to benefit all those visiting, working, or living in our community. We are proud to be the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, a beautiful property for both longtime residents and first time visitors to enjoy and spend the day exploring. ABOUT THE CHAMBER The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce has been serving the business and residential communities of Simi Valley since its establishment in 1952. Membership in the Chamber continued to grow throughout the 1970s. It was during this time that the Chamber launched the concept of Shop Simi Valley to encourage residents to spend their money at local businesses, added many networking opportunities for its members, and began to sponsor the Miss Simi Valley pageant. By the 1980s Simi Valley was experiencing rapid growth of its commercial and industrial segments. To better position itself to receive these emerging industries, the Chamber began Professional, Automotive and Government Divisions. In the 1990’s, the more business that came to Simi Valley the larger the Chamber membership grew. Due to its innovative programming, such as the Transportation Management Association and a Telecommute Center, its growing membership and its adherence to strict financial policies and procedures, creative programming and communications, the Chamber applied for and was granted accreditation from the U. S. Chamber of Commerce on June 13, 1990.

It has kept up its accreditation over the years, attaining a 5-Star accreditation in 2010, the highest awarded by the U.S. Chambers of Commerce. (See “Simi Valley Chamber Holds 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce” article in this directory on page 13). The Chamber has since added the Simi Valley Chamber Tourism Alliance, which works with the local hotels and attractions to increase lodging occupancy and boost business in Simi Valley’s leisure and hospitality sector. The Simi Valley Chamber Tourism Alliance is focused on programs and services that will deliver incremental new room night sales to its members, including marketing of members, tourist promotion activities, and marketing of special events and programs.

The Chamber has been instrumental in making Simi Valley a family-oriented, business-friendly and visitor-welcoming community. There is no doubt that it has left an imprint on the community and will continue to do so for years to come.

HEALTH & WELLNESS The Health & Wellness Committee provides programs, seminars and events to educate members on health, wellness and fitness. LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY FORUM The Legislative Advocacy Forum (LAF) reviews City, County, State and Federal legislation, analyzes its impact on business and advocates on behalf of the business community.

AMBASSADORS COMMITTEE The Ambassadors Committee is the welcoming arm of the Chamber and is the force behind special events, ribbon cuttings, grand openings and mixers. Ambassadors also serve as “mentors” to new members and dedicate countless hours of serving the entire Chamber membership by promoting the Chamber’s message and mission to fellow business professionals with our community. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The Economic Development Committee (EDC) works on business attraction and retention with the City. Speakers provide information and materials regarding business resources in the City.

LEADERSHIP SIMI VALLEY Focused on personal and professional growth, this 10-month program offers opportunities for community members to experience a behind the scenes look at Simi Valley. Strong, energetic and ethical leadership is the key to any successful community. Since its incorporation in 1969, the City of Simi Valley has been fortunate to have dedicated, responsible leadership. As a community group, the need for additional leadership became apparent. Leadership Simi Valley prepares the next generation of men and women who will assume leadership roles in the Simi Valley community. Both seasoned leaders and those aspiring to be leaders will benefit from the Leadership Simi Valley program. The ten month program sets the stage for positive momentum and change in our community through a series of programs designed to inform and cultivate participant’s abilities. The strong alumni make evident the impact of what they have learned from the program by their involvement in the community. Every Leadership Simi Valley class begins with a dynamic retreat where the concept of leadership is discussed, explored and experienced. The participants discover more about themselves and also learn and bond with their fellow class members during the series of monthly sessions. Following the retreat in September, class members meet one Friday a month from October through June, culminating in a graduation ceremony. The full day meetings involve visitations and hands on participation in a variety of informative sessions. EMERGING LEADERS The Emerging Leaders program is designed to promote networking and professional growth among entrepreneurs between the ages of 21 and 40. BUSINESS SHOWCASE The Business Showcase program provides the opportunity for members to host an event or workshop at the Chamber’s office to promote their products or services.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Accreditation Program The U.S. Chamber’s accreditation program, the only one of its kind in the country, was established to provide chambers a way to track their growth and development, and assess their objectives and resources, program of work, procedures, and achievements. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce distinctions begin with “Accredited” and then graduate to 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star. Chambers must apply to be considered for these distinctions.

PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE AWARD

The Chamber sends a delegation to Sacramento each year to lobby for business and meet with our State representatives. In May 2018 representatives from the Chamber attended the CalChamber Legislative Summit where they heard about current issues affecting business and were awarded the President’s Circle Award. This award recognizes chambers for excellence in business advocacy and helping their members comply with California employment law. The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce has received this honor each year since 2009.

Simi Valley Chamber Holds 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce If you thought the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce was outstanding, you’re in good company. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce agrees, so much so that they gave the Chamber a 5-Star Accreditation rating in 2010 and 2015. The Chamber had received its original 20-year general accreditation in 1990. The 5-Star Accreditation is the highest of several recognitions that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards to chambers nationwide. The Simi Valley Chamber is one of only 126 chambers in the United States to have a 5-Star accreditation. That’s quite a feat when you realize that of the approximately 7000 Chambers in the U.S. only 211 carry any of the accreditations. More than 850 chambers have participated in the program since its creation in 1964.

Each application is sent to a review board comprised of U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board Members, who review a chamber’s planning and performance, looking specifically at its programming, organization procedures and communications. The extensive review process can take between six and nine months to complete.

It opened in early November, 1995 as the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center featuring a performance by Rita Moreno. Take some time to soak up the elegance of this neo-classic building with stained glass windows, ornate columns and some original lighting fixtures. The venue has been used for film shoots, recitals, meetings and private parties.

Go back in time and visit the Santa Susana Depot Museum and Model Railroad built in 1903 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Take a tour of a classic passenger waiting room. The Depot is the current home of the Rancho Simi Foundation and the Santa Susana Pacific Model Railroad Club.

For a more off-the-beaten path experience take a ride to see Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village. The art project was started in 1956 by Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey, who was 60 years of age at the time. She began transforming her third acre rural lot into what is today Bottle Village. Prisbrey created a fantasyland of shrines, wishing wells, walkways, fountains, follies, plus 15 structures to house her collections, constructed with tens of thousands of bottles that she found at the local dumpsite. In 1979, the property was purchased by Preserve Bottle Village, a non-profit organization. The village has four designations. It is a California Historical Landmark, a Ventura County Cultural Landmark, a City of Simi Valley Cultural Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you have an active family and you haven’t been to Berylwood Park yet, it’s worth a visit. Whether their interest is in hoops (there’s a half court kid’s basketball court), softball or baseball (it has a ball diamond), volleyball (there’s a sand volleyball court) or just playing around (playgrounds, multipurpose room, hopscotch and open areas), it covers all the bases. There are also covered picnic tables, barbecues, a recreation building, and restrooms.

Big Sky Park

2151 Los Canyons Dr. Home of the Simi Valley Girls Softball league, Big Sky Park features four lighted softball diamonds replete with bullpens, dugouts, shaded bleachers and concession stands. The park also has picnic tables, benches, a barbecue, a pre-teen play area with swings, half-court basketball court, drinking fountains. Sitting above the ball fields is Simi Dog Park.

Challenger Field 298 First St.

Challenger Field is a baseball field designed for youth with special needs. It offers wheelchair access anywhere on the field. There are also handicap accessible restrooms, a water fountain, four uncovered picnic tables, shaded dugouts and bleachers with room for wheelchairs. Permission is needed from the District for access to the park. Parking can be found on Blackstock Ave. and in a parking lot across the street. Chumash Park 3200 Flanagan Dr.

This sprawling 52.7-acre park is located on the east end of Simi Valley and features sandstone rock formations, gorgeous vistas of the surrounding area and caves. The park offers a half-court basketball court, adult fitness area, tot lot, pre-teen play area, walkways, interpretive signage, a grassy area, parking lot, benches and picnic tables and lots of space to explore.

In the mood for a walk in the park? Visit Citrus Grove Park near the corner of Los Angeles Ave. and Erringer Rd. Features include a walking path, play equipment, a tot lot, uncovered picnic tables and a barbecue area.

Corriganville Park 7001 Smith Rd.

movies, television programs, and commercials. Comic actor Bob Hope purchased the property in 1965 and renamed it Hopetown. In 1988 the property was purchased by Rancho Simi Open Space Conservation and is now owned and operated by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District.

Coyote Hills Park 275 Valley Gate Rd.

You like to hike, but your kids want to ride horses, and your spouse just wants to hang out. Where can you go to get it all? Coyote Hills Park. The park’s amenities include hiking trails, equestrian trails, a barbecue area, basketball court, gazebo, covered and open picnic tables, a pre-teen play area, tot lot, turf area, drinking fountains and a bike rack.

Darrah Volunteer Park 3700 Royal Ave.

If you have the next Cody Bellinger at home, you’ll want to bring him or her to Darrah Volunteer Park, home of the Simi Valley Baseball League. With four baseball diamonds, four batting cages, concession stands, dugouts, bleachers, picnic tables and restrooms, you’re set to take the family out to a baseball game or for a little batting practice. The park also has access to the Arroyo Simi Bike Path.

Foothill Park

1850 Ardenwood Ave. A smaller, neighborhood park, Foothill Park has something for everyone. There’s a tot lot and a grassy area for the little ones to play in, a half-court basketball court for pre-teens

and teenage and a hiking trail for you and the kids that leads to Corriganville Park. Just go through the gate behind the basketball court. Barbecue at the park or bring your own food and enjoy it at the park’s picnic tables and benches.

Frontier Park 2163 Elizondo Ave.

If you have a young family and want to visit a small park with accessibility to a bike trail (Arroyo Simi Bike Path), Frontier Park may be a good choice for you.

Houghton-Schreiber Park 4333 Township Ave.

There’s family fun for everyone at Houghton-Schreiber Park. Featuring a half-court basketball court, volleyball courts, and four baseball diamonds—it’s the home of Santa Susana Baseball. The park also has barbecues, picnic tables, play areas for pre-teens and tots, a multipurpose room with a kitchen, a grassy area and restrooms.

Knolls Park

1300 W. Katherine Rd. Knolls Park is adjacent to the former Knolls Fire Station, which has been renovated. The park has a ball diamond, concession stand, picnic tables, park benches, tot lot, pre-teen play area, and drinking fountains. It is also the satellite home of Simi Youth Baseball, which plays on its ball diamond and uses its concession stand.

Knolls Station 1262 Cypress St.

Knolls Station, formerly the Old Knolls Fire Station has been renovated as a community facility and is available as a rental for parties and other events. The station includes a full kitchen, two restrooms, and a large outdoor area in back. It is next to Knolls Park.

Lincoln Park 1215 First St.

A neighborhood park, Lincoln Park has a walking trail that leads you past a beautiful flower bed. The park includes lots of open space, a fitness circuit, 1/2 court basketball, uncovered picnic tables and a tot lot.

Mayfair Park 2550 Caldwell Ave.

Do you have a budding Indiana Jones in your family? Or maybe you or your kids love sports? Then Mayfair Park is a great choice for a family outing. Want to visit a park with amenities galore? If so, Rancho Madera Community Park should be on your list. Located in the Wood Ranch area of Simi Valley it has something for everyone! Unique features include an amphitheater, a lighted walking path, basketball courts, ball diamond, barbeques, picnic areas, three gazebos, restrooms, a tot lot playground, teen playground, tennis courts, soccer field and a sand volleyball court. The ball diamond, soccer field, tennis courts, and pavilions can all be reserved. Rancho Madera Community Park is also home to the annual Snowfest event.

Rancho Santa Susana Community Park and Community Center

Featuring five full-sized soccer fields, Rancho Santa Susana Community Park and Community Center is the community’s nexus for adult and children’s soccer. The park also includes three lighted softball fields, a walking path, horseshoe pits, equestrian trails, picnic tables and a playground area. Rancho Santa Susana Community Park is also the setting for Simi’s Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza, the Rotary’s Cajun and Blues Festival and the Rotary Gator Run. The Rancho Santa Susana Community Center, located on the park’s grounds, holds the annual Youth Halloween Carnival.

Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park

Rancho Simi Community Park, also known as Duck Pond Park, was the first community park in Simi. The park highlights a lagoon and an Olympic-size pool with two diving boards. Other amenities including an amphitheater, lighted basketball courts, horseshoe pits, a handicap accessible play area, shuffleboard courts, a soccer field, tennis courts, a pre-teen play area, tot lot, uncovered picnic tables, barbecues, and restrooms. The pool and amphitheater can be reserved for private events by community members.

Known as “the Rock Park” or “Old Santa Su”, Santa Susana Pass State Historical Park is a must-see. Sitting next to the Historic Train Depot, it is filled with beautiful vistas of the Simi Valley and is near Corriganville Park. The park offers visitors a baseball diamond, basketball court, volleyball court, 16 uncovered picnic tables and a covered pavilion (available as a rental) with even more! There are bleachers, a tot lot, preteen play area, drinking fountains, and restrooms.

The 4800 acres of Rocky Pointe Natural Park is full of beautiful sandstone outcroppings, including Knolls Rock, a county designated landmark. The park includes a vernal pool seasonal wetland, oak woodlands, and two converging streams. The property is also a nesting habitat for white-throated swifts, violet-green swallow, and cliff swallows. The area is also home to the Santa Susana Tarplant, a rare plant and lichen flora which grows on and near the boulders and rocky knolls.

Tapo Canyon Regional Park sits north of Simi Valley in the Santa Susana Mountains. There’s a playground for the kids and an equestrian arena. Or if you’re taking your RV on the road, reserve a spot at their RV camping area.

This pocket park connects to the Arroyo Simi Bike Path. If biking or hiking isn’t on your list of things to do, take in the view while relaxing on a bench or at a picnic table.

PATHS Arroyo Simi Bike Path The Arroyo Simi Bike Path runs in an east-west direction through a large portion of Simi Valley. Several multi-use paths, used by joggers, walkers, runners, and those on bicycles, skateboards, and horseback, can be found on both sides of the Arroyo Simi Flood Control Channel that begins just west of Stearns St. and extends all the way to Stargaze Pl. at the west end. Portions of the path have been upgraded with improved entrances located at Sequoia Ave., Royal Ave., Sycamore Dr., Erringer Rd., and Madera Rd.

TRAILS Corriganville Trails Visitors will enjoy the choice of hiking trails throughout the park. Depending on your hiking abilities and your preferences there are five trails--the Loop Trail, Wildlife Corridor Trail, Stagecoach Trail, Hummingbird Connector Trail and Interpretive Trail--to choose from, several interconnecting with one another. Loop Trail: For those who aren’t avid hikers but just want to take a nice walk surrounded by the beauty of Mother Nature, then Corriganvile Park’s Loop trail is a great starting point. The one-hour, low-maintenance hike takes you past sandstone rock formations, remnants of Corriganville’s movie set days and an oak-shaded park area. Trailhead: Can be accessed from anywhere in the park.

Wildlife Corridor Trail To get an aerial view of the park, you may want to hike along Corriganville’s Wildlife Corridor Trail. With an elevation change of 900 feet, this trail meets up with Rocky Peak Trail. Trailhead: take the Loop Trail until you see markers for the half-mile Wildlife Corridor Trail.

Stagecoach Trail An easy hike, the Stagecoach Trail takes you on the east side of Simi Valley. The mile-long trail gives you a glimpse of the vegetation that grows in the area, as it follows the old Butterfield Stage Lines Trail. Stagecoaches carried mail and passengers over the Butterfield trail from 1858 to 1861. Service to the area was rerouted to the Santa Susanna Pass at the outbreak of the Civil War. Trailhead: Access the trail on the eastern end of Lilac off Santa Susanna Pass Rd.

Hummingbird Connector Trail Called a connector trail for a reason, Hummingbird connects the northwestern tip of the Loop Trail and Foothill Neighborhood Park. Trailhead: Take Kuehner Dr. off the 118 Fwy. Just north you’ll see a park area, and that’s where you’ll find the bottom of the Hummingbird Connector Trail.

Chumash Trail

Rocky Peak Fire Road Trail

The 2.5-mile Chumash Trail extends from Flanagan Drive to about 1.3 miles past Rocky Peak. It is a moderate trail used by many hikers, bikers, and runners. Trailhead: North of the 118 Fwy on Yosemite Ave to Flanagan. The park is at the top of Flanagan Drive.

The 6.1-mile Rocky Peak Fire Road trail has some rugged terrain and should only be taken by experienced hikers or bikers. Following an old fire road, the trail ends north of Blind Canyon in Las Llajas Canyon. It also intersects with the Chumash Trail on the south end. Trailhead: Located at the end of the Rocky Peak Rd. off-ramp along Route 118.

Las Llajas Canyon Trail This 9.3-mile loop trail which has an elevation gain of 1722 feet, provides amazing views of Simi Valley and the surrounding hills, but is not for the faint-hearted. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but must be on a leash. Trailhead: Access the trail from the Chumash Trail. The Las Llajas Canyon Trail ends on Evening Sky Dr.

Long Canyon Trail The 2.35-mile trail which extends along the ridge south of Long Canyon Village features views of Wood Ranch and Simi Valley. It’s a great trail for all levels including children and leashed dogs. The trail ends where it joins the eastern end of Long Canyon Road. You can then turn around or use Long Canyon Rd., which will add about 1.25 miles to your hike. Trailhead: Access the trail on the north side of Long Canyon Rd., a few hundred feet east of Wood Ranch Parkway.

Mt. McCoy Trail Mt. McCoy, on the western end of Simi Valley, is known as the hill with the large cross at the top. Mt. McCoy offers panoramic views of the Valley and the Channel Islands. The trail leading to the top is 1.3 miles and climbs 500-600 feet. This gentle hike is great for all ages. At the top, a dirt track extends south toward the Presidential Library and north to connect with Tierra Rejada Road. Trailhead: Access the trailhead on the western end of Washburn St. To reach it take Royal Ave and make a right at the “T” intersection onto Acapulco Ave. Make a left on Washburn St. The trailhead begins where Washburn St. curves and becomes Los Amigos Ave. This trailhead will lead you to the white cross on Mt. McCoy.

Rocky Peak Trail Open to hikers, bicyclists, and dogs, this trail, located in the Santa Susana Mountains sits between Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The 4.75-mile trail (roundtrip) takes about an hour and a half to complete and has an elevation of 2714 feet. For a shorter hike, try taking Rocky Peak Trail from Rocky Peak Rd. through Rocky Peak Park. Trailhead: Access the trailhead off Rocky Peak Rd.

GOLF COURSES Simi Hills Golf Course 5031 Alamo St.

Owned by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, the18-hole course was designed by Ted Robinson. The par 71 championship golf source, voted the Reader’s Choice Winner by the Ventura County Star and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest as a top place to play. Offering challenges to golfers of all levels, Simi Hills Golf Course has more than 50 bunkers and hazards on eight holes. It provides golfers with practice facilities, a lighted driving range, and a practice putting green.

Sinaloa Golf Course 980 Madera Rd.

This nine-hole, public golf course has been open to the public since 1958. It has a par 27 layout that plays 1088 yards from the back tees. Beginning to more experienced golfers will enjoy that course which has bunkers on seven of the nine holes. Golf lessons from professional, certified instructors are also available.

SIMI VALLEY FILM HISTORY How the Film Industry Helped Shape Simi Valley Before retail stores and industry moved into town and planned communities were still a glimmer of an idea in a land speculator’s eye, Hollywood discovered the wide-open expanse and craggy rock formations of Simi Valley, using it as a frequent backdrop for television and film projects. One of the earliest movie ranches in Simi was Corriganville, which morphed into Hopetown for a short time before its demise in the 1980s. Tapo Ranch rose up in the 1940s and eventually became Big Sky. In the last 15 or so years, Allied Studios and Hummingbird Nest have also been added to the mix. Like their cousins in San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, the Simi ranches all lie in what is known as the Studio Zone, an estimated 30-mile radius from the intersection of Western and Beverly Blvds. and North La Cienega Blvd. The productions that have been and are being filmed in Simi today have helped shape the economic structure and culture of the community.

Corriganville (Hopetown) Corriganville Movie Ranch, located in the foothills of the Santa Susana Pass, was once the pride and joy of Ray “Crash” Corrigan, a former Hollywood stuntman, who began creating a variety of movie sets on his ranch after his retirement from the entertainment business. Corrigan purchased the property in 1937 and began constructing movie sets shortly after that. The ranch would eventually include Silvertown, a western fort, a Mexican village, Western Town, a church/schoolhouse (it was a church on the west side of the building and a school on the east side), and Robin Hood Lake among other sets. Between 1937 and 1965, approximately 3,500 movies, television shows, and commercials were filmed at Corriganville. During the height of its popularity with the studios, the ranch served as a backdrop for “The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” as well as the Roy Rogers’, Gene Autry’s, Cisco Kid’s, Wyatt Earp’s serials, “Gunsmoke,” “Have Gun Will Travel,” the Robin Hood series, “Perils of Nyoka”, the “Three Musketeers”, ”Fort Apache” and many others. The very first movie filmed there was an RKO Studios production starring George O'Brien. The ranch also attracted other movie studios such as Columbia, Republic, Spectrum, Monogram, and Grand National. And, although some major studios used the ranch, they were not as frequent customers as were their smaller counterparts. In 1949, Corrigan had the idea to open the ranch to the public on weekends and holidays as a western-style amusement park with some staged shoot-em up shows, rodeo exhibitions, and stagecoach rides. His shows became so popular that he often drew in 15,000 guests during a weekend.

Corrigan owned the ranch until 1965 when his then ex-wife, Rita Jane Corrigan Stiltz, purchased the property from him. She sold it to Edwin Gottlieb, who in turn sold it to comedian and property speculator Bob Hope. Hope rebranded the property as Hopetown. He ran it for a year before closing the ranch to the public but held onto the property for several years after that. As the years went on, fewer film crews used the location. One of the last movies filmed on site was Vigilante Force (1976). Corriganvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heyday as a movie ranch may have been over, but the property did become a popular venue for an annual two-day motorcycle race that ran from the late 1960's into the mid or late 1970s. No longer in the Hollywood floodlights, the park is now a haven for walkers, runners and hikers who frequent its five trailheads. (See page 20 for more information on these hiking trails.) Only remnants of what was once the home to many B-westerns are visible today. Fires in 1971 and 1979 ravaged many of the sets. Today a concrete lake once used in underwater scenes is still visible, as are the foundations of the western town. In 1982 the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board designated the ranch a historical point of interest. In 1995 it was redesignated as a historical landmark. Hope sold the ranch to Griffin Homes, a developer in 1986, which hoped to build on the section of the property once known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Silvertown.â&#x20AC;? But just two years later Griffin sold 225-acres to the city of Simi Valley to create a regional park. They named it Corriganville Park, after the man who originally made it famous.

Big Sky Movie Ranch Joins the Mix Big Sky Movie Ranch is currently the oldest functioning movie ranch in the area. The property dates back to 1903 when the Patterson Ranch Co. purchased 12,500 acres for the production of grain and livestock (hogs, cattle, and sheep). During the 1930s oil magnate J. Paul Getty bought the property and renamed it Tapo Ranch. The studios discovered Tapo in the 1950s and ’60s. They were entranced by its rolling hills, sweeping valleys, secluded meadows and canyons, and its spectacular vistas, using it for many westerns, including “Rawhide” and “Bonanza.” The ranch was also a location for productions such as "Little House on the Prairie," "Father Murphy," "The Thorn Birds," "The Gambler," "The Beastmaster," "Bonanza", "Dallas," "Gunsmoke, "Quantum Leap," "Rawhide," "Sidekicks" and "Flicka." For the most part, the studios filmed on the south side of the property where the majority of the sets and other structures were located. In late 2003, a wildfire swept through the ranch, decimating the area. In 1981 the 6,000+-acre ranch, the biggest movie ranch in the country, was in new hands again when Big Sky Ranch Co. and Watt Enterprises purchased it. Since then, Big Sky has continued to bring Hollywood to Simi Valley as the location for many television shows and films, including "The Office," "Saving Mr. Banks," "Captain America," "Django Unchained," "Agents of SHIELD," "Hail Caesar," "The Revenant" and "WESTWORLD."

The New Kids on the Block The emergence of Allied Studios and Hummingbird Nest are assurance that the movie business will continue to grace Simi Valley.

Allied Studios Allied Studios is the Millennial child of the movie ranches in the area. It came on the scene in 2003-2004, working with the Hallmark Channel and Pixl TV Movie Channel, to name a few. Since then, the studio has expanded its property at 6,800 Smith Road to include 70,000 square feet of finished stages with 6,000 square feet of stages under construction, plus a business district back lot and an open back lot on an adjacent 9.1-acre parcel of land. In May of 2018, Allied negotiated a lease with Waste Management for one-third of its 3,000-acre property in an unincorporated area of Simi, to be used as an open lot for filming.

Hummingbird Nest Another studio venue is in the area is Hummingbird Nest. The 130-acre property, which also sits in the studio zone, includes a brick ranch house, a Spanish colonial villa, a horse barn, lake, grassy fields, paved roads as well as dirt roads and trails, rocky terrain, sweeping vistas and much more. Over the years these ranches have helped make Simi a destination for the television and film industry. The next time you hear someone refer to Simi as a sleepy bedroom community, remind them how fundamental the city's natural settings, pristine landscapes, and tax incentives have been for the film and television industries.
