2022 SIMMENTAL YOUTH BURSARY
In 2022, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Simmental in Australia, the ASBA were pleased to award two youth bursaries. The bursaries were offered to Simmental Youth Members to attend a Royal Show, to develop their cattle skills and undertake a new experience within the Simmental breed.
Indy Smith, WA and Micquella Grima, NSW, were the deserving recipients of the bursaries. Both young ladies chose to attend the Royal Melbourne Show in October.
Indy, whose registered stud is Valkyrie Cattle Co., has a passion for traditional Simmentals. Indy is currently studying a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, with a view to moving into Veterinary Science in the near future. Indy worked with experienced Simmental breeders, Peter and Vanessa Wenn, Pinaroo Hills Simmentals, at Melbourne Show.
Indy commented, “The wisdom and knowledge I have gained at the Show expanded over not only the Simmental industry, but also every aspect of showing, from coat work and products to fitting and clipping. I also had the opportunity to meet the most amazing group of industry experts and Simmental enthusiasts who further cemented my passion for showing cattle and desire to breed Simmentals.”
partner Adam, and has been involved in showing Simmentals for 10 years. Micquella is studying a Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Business through the University of New England. Micquella worked with both St Pauls Genetics, and Brewer Beef at Melbourne Show. Micquella was impressed with the inclusion of Simmental Percentage classes in the Melbourne Royal schedule and was pleased to have the opportunity to be involved in this area of the showing. Micquella said, “Personally, the bursary meant more than just being provided with the financial capability to attend Melbourne Royal Show, it solidified for me that industry professionals do believe that I have the potential to contribute to the Australian beef industry and in particular the Simmental beef industry. Since having the opportunity to meet and speak with a number of individuals in the field of artificial insemination and genetics at the show, I have decided to enrol in an Artificial Insemination course to be able to greater utilise the genetic potential available to my herd in the future.”
ASBA congratulate and thank both ladies for representing Simmental Youth with such enthusiasm and professionalism. Following the success of this year’s bursary program, the ASBA Youth Committee are hoping to continue the initiative in following years.
