REPORT

The Herdsman Award is dedicated to the memory of the late Joe Tones, who was an active junior who participated at many Junior Simmental events. The Award is a living memory of his commitment to his kindness to his peers and the role model that he was to many young cattle enthusiasts.

Molly Hartwig was the recipient at the Simmental Queensland Junior camp and has put forward the following report:

In December 2021 I attended the Simmental Youth Camp ‘Beefing up the Next Generation’. Whilst at the camp I won the Joe Tones Memorial Champion Herdsman award. This prize included entry to the Tasmania Junior Beef Expo in February 2022. In February of this year I flew down to Deloraine in Tasmania to attend. Whilst at the camp I learnt so many new things and met many wonderful people. I learnt about how they produce, breed and show their cattle in Tasmania. It was fascinating to compare the similarities and differences in these practices. One of the most notable differences is Tasmania’s natural ability to finish grass fed cattle on improved pastures, compared to Queensland’s intensive feedlotting operations used for finishing. From this amazing opportunity I’ve learnt in-depth about breed plans and EBV’s, animal classification and assessment, production systems, pasture management, parasite management, public speaking tips and so much more! These have allowed me to gain and further my knowledge in the beef industry. But most importantly I made awesome memories meeting some wonderful people who will be long life friends.

Simmental Australia presents . . . Beefing Up the Next Generation Simmental Show 2021

By Bec Skene

First week in December, 2021, QLD Simmentals held the annual Simmental Australia presents ‘Beefing Up the Next Generation Junior Show’ at Pittsworth, QLD. The QLD branch were able to hold our biggest and one of the most well-regarded junior shows to date, with 75 participants, 25 years and under from all over QLD with cattle travelling from QLD and NSW.

Despite us facing the challenges of Covid, border restrictions and flooding, we had to cancel our industry tours due to water blocking our roads to visit feedlots and feed plant. Our seniors program kicked off with careers in feedlot industry, followed by Prime Beef Judges. With the rest of the participants joining us Friday morning with a jampacked program, with back to basics, junior judging, parader’s practise, public speaking, and a very impactful discussion with our older participants of the impacts of social media can have in the form of bullying. With the Simmental Show, semen collection, meat judging and grading, a well contested Paraders’ competition, to watching the online auction was just a few more activities that our participants got to be involved in over the few days.

With many participants receiving multiple awards, our champion herdsman heading to Tasmania Junior Beef Expo, and to end, all the hard work leads up to the main award that many of the senior participants attended the event for, was the Ambassador award. Simmental Australia, after many years became our events major sponsor, and awarded a study bursary to the lucky winner. Each participant, was to be a junior member to be able to have a chance at winning the bursary towards a study of Simmentals. With our participants, being aged 15 and over to compete, they had to compete in all competitions, sit a relevant Simmental Exam, an interview and complete a specially picked scenario, adjust to how they would like to run a program and present it to our panel judges, with all the scores tallied together to get our Ambassador winner. A massive congratulations to Charlie Salter for winning this. Thank you to Simmental Australia, for helping our committee revamp this award and sponsoring.

To all our cattle donors that donate cattle year in year out, the judges, herdsman judges, helpers, caterers and to our valuable sponsors, without you all our event would not be possible and be the success it is.

Our next event is on the 1st-4th December 2022 at Pittsworth Showgrounds.
