The New Year gets off to a great start with the welcome introduction of LG’s technically advanced and stylish new range of LED Displays. Available in 42" and 47" formats, the SL9000 range utilises single layer technology and side-lit LEDs to produce a frameless streamlined TV that is just 2.9cm deep. For easy sharing, integrated Bluetooth technology enables images and music to be streamed wirelessly to the screen.

Screens for fixed installations For permanent installations, we offer both manually operated and motorised screens. Whether ceiling or wall‑mounted, these versatile, stylish and durable screens are easily installed and will enhance any presentation environment. Manually operated ‘pull-down’ screens are available in both standard and wide formats. In addition to a standard drop-down screen, our motorised range offers a twin motor drop-down screen enabling the entire screen to be lowered and then retracted by up to 5 metres – ideal for use with very high ceilings, or in theatre settings where permanent positioning could compromise stage lighting. Providing further flexibility, a floor-standing ‘rise-up’ screen offers the opportunity for concealed mounting within a display system – in front, for example, of a plasma or LCD screen, in a home cinema suite. For greater visual impact and flexibility, video walls can be angled up to 40°. And for creating seamless video walls using MagicInfo Pro D.S. PF1/FL1 Flat Wall Mounts  Amongst the most compatible and robust flat panel wall mounts currently available, the PF1 and FL1 are manufactured from high grade steel and feature a unique universal mounting ensuring a perfect fit and compatibility with most medium and large screens. Multiple fixing points on the back plate ensure a secure installation onto solid or stud walls while a twin locking mechanism provides safety and security for your display. Tilt versions (PT1/FT1) and extra-large versions (PF2/PT2) are also available.

APM1 The Raw APM1 is a robust, fully-automated, wall mount for 37"-52" flat screens – a remote control provides comprehensive tilt, swivel and reach adjustment. When the power is switched on the screen can be positioned using directional arrow keys on the remote control, or by choosing one of the programmable presets, to ensure you always have the perfect view. When not in use, the device’s inbuilt memory will return the screen to the ‘home’ position – flush against the wall. The front plates’ universal design ensures that screens can be easily mounted.

TRS1 A moveable trolley for flat screens featuring four unidirectional wheels with a locking function to secure the mount once positioned, the TRS1 is ideal for use in corporate or retail environments. A universal mounting system allows all screens in the specified size range to be fitted to the front plates, while a locking system keeps the screen secure but facilitates easy removal when required for storage and maintenance. Also available, the TRS2 features an integrated shelf for AV equipment, including laptops and DVD players.

You might have thought that projection technology had gone about as far as it could but then along came Pico, LED and 3D. Recent technological development in these three areas has brought forth new categories of projection devices, new light sources for use within them and new, immersive forms of content to view with 3D ready hardware.

The development of miniaturised projection engines no bigger than a sugar cube by Texas Instruments (TI) and 3M has spawned a new strand of handheld ‘pocket’ projection products. The engine is either integrated into a device like a mobile phone, digital camera or media player, or, forms the base of a standalone miniature projector that can be hooked up to display content from a device such as a media-player, mobile, digital camera or laptop.

LED has been teamed with standard-sized TI chips to produce small desktop projectors no bigger than a paperback book like those from Samsung, Acer, BenQ and Toshiba. The LED/ TI combination is also going into high-end, high-ticket, home cinema projectors, such as those from Projectiondesign, Digital Projection, SIM2, Vivitek and Runco.

The last of these three projection technology developments is 3D. We see slightly different views with each eye and our brains combine the images into one, creating the perception of depth. A variety of techniques exist for re-creating the visual experience of depth – all using special glasses. It is not the techniques that are driving 3D however, but the content and the key driver is Hollywood, which appears to have fallen in love - once again - with movies in 3D.

This is a young but potentially high-volume market; PMA predicts 17 million pico projectors by 2012. CES 2010, one of the world’s leading consumer electronics fairs held annually in January in Las Vegas, is expected to be packed with new pico projectors and integrated pico projection device from familiar consumer electronics brands, gadget and toy makers and start-ups and entrepreneurs attracted by the technology’s potential.

LED is an ‘instant-on/off’ technology so there’s no need to warm-up or cool-down and the LED’s long life span of anything from 20,000 to 100,000 hours also means there is no longer any need for customers to buy replacement lamps. LED’s major restriction is brightness. While the technology is – in the right hands – delivering good saturated colour and dynamic contrast, it simply cannot provide the high levels of brightness produced by conventional mercury-based lamps. There is ongoing development of LED-based displays so we can expect to see ongoing improvements and enhancements to LED projection technology.

Last year saw a whole host of 3D movies from animations like Coraline and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs to James Cameron’s $230-million Avatar, has taken more than $1-billion at the box office since it opened before Christmas – a feat achieved by only five films to date. All the big brands are working on 3D television technology but 3D projection-based home cinema is already here. InfoComm 2009 was packed with 3D projection offerings from the likes of Projectiondesign, Digital Projection ViewSonic and Mitsubishi and InfoComm 2010 in June is likely to feature yet further brands and models.
