The Banger
This a variation of the Hoover by Niklaus Bauer which I call the banger. I use different materials (Fosfori hair and Goat hair) purely because I'm unable to easily obtain big fly fibre. This is a fantastic cross over fly and can be tied in numerous colour combinations and sizes depending on the target species whether in Fresh water or salt.
Wrap some cotton half way down the hook shaft just behind the hook point. Then take a pencil thick clump of bucktail and tie onto the hook allowing to spin around the hook shaft. Trim excess, and place a dab of head cement over it.
Depending on how long you want the fly to be will depend on the next step. Cut a length of big fly fiber‌.here I used fosfori hair 250 mm long and tie on directly over the bucktail. Spread the material around the top half of the hook. Trim excess and add a dab of head cement. If you don't have either materials then Party wig hair will suffice.
Now take 8 - 10 strands Pearl FFF Flash and taper the ends. Tie on in the middle slightly to one side of the hook shaft. Bend back over itself and tie on the other side of the hook shaft. This will splay the FFF Flash slightly.
Take a second clump of bucktail and tie on top of the hook shaft. Allow to splay out.
Add a second thin clump of big fly fiber (Here I used goat hair) - 180 mm long. Spread the material around the top half of the hook shaft.
Take a second clump 10 strands pearl tinsel and fold in half and snip. Taper edges out then tie on top of the hook shaft slightly to one side. Then fold over and tie secure on the other side.
Take one marabou hairline feather and tie onto the hook shaft ready for palmering. Superglue the vein of the feather and let set before snipping excess away.
Palmer marabou feather around the hook shaft. One could use a dubbing loop here instead.
Add 5 peacock hurl feathers for lateral lines. Place feathers between scissors and finger and slide along the feathers. This will curl the feathers to the desired profile.
Here I used Olive Polar chenille but one could vary the head to your own specifications. Either stick eyes on and bug-bond or one could wrap a contrasting colour of chenille around to make a head then stick a couple of eyes on. Whip finish and add a decent blob of head cement.
