A shape of a square is orientated in the surroundings

The shape is formed by an excisting pond...

The contour of the building is being kept.

The volume is adapted into the surroundings.

Crematorium is an innovative, highly sceptical seen by the public and Catholic Church for its burial function, building. The novelty of a newly projected building is in its unconventional function in Lithuania and the thought of how mourning architecture should look like. Crematorium is not proposed as a decorative, willingly to shock or surprise, but rather as a highly literary architectural object. In modern and continuously changing world, the processes of funeral traditions are changing in a very fast pace. Often the architectural spaces of a farewell halls are full of psichologically disturbing mood and therefore, the architecture of a crematorium must remain neutral and give a refuge for a visitor: after all, the situation of a lost is already full of shocks. Mourning architecture is orientated to a person: he is not visiting here voluntarily, he comes here without debate - this is not an open invitation, so architecture has to be easily seen and read.

The construction of a roof

The volume is open to the surroundings...

...and lets a person to decide: to open to the forest...

...or to close from it using the louvers.

The projected crematorium is created to close from the unwanting and to open to the surrounding forest: from the farewell halls the ability to create wanted intimacy is suggested. The mourners choose to open to the forest and search for the refuge in it, for the peace and calmness. From the street the volume is closed and only the path and the changing of the volume next by the pond can indicate that the entering is there. The chosen material for the facades is concrete which changes during the years and adapts even more to the surroundings: the roof will overgrow with moss and become the part of th nature that surrounds it.

The main aim of a freshly renovated building is to invite visitors to a newly reborn cultural center. The new extension of a building invites to look to the art through the narrow opening in order to increase interest of Lithuanian and foreign artists’ works. The chain of a visual connection to the church and the formerly built factory is being created and the hidden art is being exhibited in the territory. The current volume is being closed off, therefore some parts of it are destroyed and the inner yard for the visitors and art viewers is created. The demolished parts are modernized and the fasade element, as matte glass, constructs the integrity between the old and the new. The matte glass creates a feeling of decomposition for the people inside the gallery. It creates an interest to others outside to come in and meet the art.

The building is 3 storey and divided into two parts: the new extention part and the former building functions though the floor. The newly developed extention performs the function of exposition halls. It contains a lot of open space and easily transformed walls. The old building keeps the old functions in it through floors: the theather hall in the second and third floors. Therefore, it changes in the first floor : the walls are demolished permanently and a lot of open space for the reception and cafe is left. Third floor: - cinema/theather hall - transformed conference rooms

Prof. Saulius Pamerneckis / saulius.pamerneckis@vgtu.lt Award: “GERAS” award The place for a newly projected multi-storey residential housing with commercial use was chosen in the heart of Vilnius in the newly reborn district of Šnipiškes. The plot is surrounded by different urban arrangements, buildings of different height and typology. On the East side, residential buildings are arranged, while on the West, a building of Soviet modernism, a part of cultural herritage can be seen. The area is near the Neris river and faces some beautiful visual connections to the Gediminas Castleand the nature on top of Mountains’ Park nature. 14

All three buildings are projected 5 storey which contain both living and commercial use. The ground floor is adapted for public needs, while the other storeys serve a residential. The underground floor is fitted with three main function: a parking lot for 62 cars, areas for technical facilities and storage rooms for the use of residents. The technical project of the building contains three parts: architectural, constructional and engineering. During the course, the understanding of the design process of a building, whilst learning the basic knowledge about mechanical stability, structural systems and materials, fire safety, building energy and HVAC systems was achieved.

The buildings are constructed by the latest energy saving class regulations in Lithuania. Since 2014 all new-built objects must meet regulations for A+, A++ or A+++ energy saving class. Due to this, the chosen material to protect the building from losing more energy and to avoid fire possibilities is rockwool (from PAROC manufacturer).

Sculpture shaped concrete ceiling

The falling water reflects artificial light and creates a rippling light that falls on the sides of the ceiling

The chapel is located inside the newly projected crematorium in Vilnius, which is situated in a forest. Surrounded by the lobby, the chapel stands out by the spreading sound of falling water. The sound is a reminder of the nature the building is enclosed by and gives an overall feeling of peace in the place where people are highly affected by their emotions. The glass cover with two portals around the chapel becomes the barrier between the vibrant sound and the silent inner space. The natural light falls through the skylight and directs the look to the altar. The furniture is as simple as the volume, created from natural materials. Due to this, the attention is directed to the emotions, and the space itself calms the visitor. Nevertheless, the artificial lights reflected from the falling water creates rippling light and make the space vivid.

THE GREE N L INE SIELMINGEN INDUSTRY AREA URBAN AND QUALITY DEVELOPMENT

Project type: Urban Planning Institution: Stuttgart Universität Date: Apr. - Jul. 2016 Location: Filderstadt, Stuttgart, Germany Proffesor: Vertr.-Prof. Daniel Schönle / daniel.schoenle@si.uni-stuttgart.de Collaboration: Ugnė Stankaitytė, Melanie Kupferschmid Connections Companies are run by people and the biggest goal for a successful future is to make a new working place motivating, flexible and attractive. The tomorrow’s industrial park is created to be an inspiring working place for thousands of talented individuals. It is home for freelancers and fresh-minded start-up’ers, CEO’s and workers: everyone motivated to become the icons of the future. The future vision of the territory brings the concept of a high quality greenery inside the area. The new S-Bahn line is developed to continue the greenery throughout the territory. As the metro goes undergrown where the edges are highly afforested, it creates a mistical feeling of being in a small forest. Another important axis is created vertically through the Sielmingen industrial park connecting the north and the south. One of the most important rules of urbanistical development is that habitation should be supplied with fresh air. On the east side corridor of fresh air is left and urbanistical development is refused.

In order to follow up, we have to understand, that new and unused industrial territories in the cities must be addapted no longer as logistical centers and factories only, but also as want-to-be and want-to-work-in places. The high quality architecture and attractive public spaces become very important and creates the value of the area itself. The new S-Bahn line and the new stop in Sielmingen will bring all the possibilities for private investors and public managers to work in a new motivating industrial park of tomorrow.
