4 IBA PROJECTS questionary

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT DURATION OF THE PROJECT LOCATION INVOLVED COLLABORATORS FINANCIAL ASPECTS OUTCOME RELATION TO AGRICULTURE RELATION TO “BEE-ING WILHELMSBURG “ PROJECT RELATIONSHIP TO THE LEGACY OF THE IBA

PARKWERK gGMBH evaluation

RELATION TO AGRICULTURE

The project does not relate to agriculture in its pure form, but to gardening and landscaping. The “Parkwerk gGmbH” is a project with a pioneering role - locals would have been integrated in maintaining a public space. The maintenance of the park - be it cutting the lawn, cleaning the ponds or arranging flowers - would have offered a lot of outdoor activities.

RELATION TO „BEE-PROJECT“

Although the project is not (yet) implemented, there are several components we would like to incorporate in the “Bee-Ing Wilhelmsburg” project. The involvement of locals in a longterm employment scheme seems like a great opportunity to do something against the high unemployment rate on the island. All kinds of locals would be welcomed in the project - youngsters as well as disabled residents. Also children would be invited to be a part of the project, namely by the educational trainings. This focus on embedding locals in a local project seems promising and helps residents to become entrenched with their immediate surroundings. We would like to incorporate the design of the planter boxes. The surrounding step is perfect for children, to get closer to the plants & detect details.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE LEGACY OF THE IBA

The project started out well and tried to included the locals into the maintenance of a public space. Unfortunately the project has not (yet) been developped further. Concrete information is not available.

CONSPIRATIONAL KITCHEN CONCERTS evaluation

RELATION TO AGRICULTURE

This project was analyzed because of its connection to food. Of the numerous events, one event hosted Gereon Krebber and “Das Gemüseorchester” (The Vegetable Orchestra). The “orchestra” used the vegetables themselves to make music, which was accompanied by vegetable soup. However, no further relationship with agriculture or agricultural products was found.

RELATION TO „BEE-PROJECT“

This project served as art, entertainment, and publicity for the IBA. There was no connection to the agricultural tradition of the island. However, it emphasizes the importance of the kitchen as a place for discussion and as a way to bring people together. The project also offers an example of innovative art/entertainment, which garners the interest of the creative class and serves as publicity for the IBA. Perhaps an event such as this could serve as a kick-off to the Beekeeping project.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE LEGACY OF THE IBA

Regarding the architectural/physical dimension, the IBA did not contribute to the creation of a new space for these events. Instead, it used an existing and multifunctional space, operating as both a home and an event space. The space was also given a “make-over” by an artist for each event. Regarding the socio-economic dimension, the project seems to attract the creative middle class and regarding the organizational dimension, the project was meant to be temporal as no plans were made beyond its three year duration.

JOHANNA BAKERY evaluation

RELATION TO AGRICULTURE

The windmill Johanna is a landmark for the 200 year long baking tradition on the island. It was established in 1875 and since 1941 it is a registered cultural monument. The windmill represents substantial heritage for the island, which was shaped by agricultural activities. The refurbishing of the mill and the construction of the new baking house helped to revitalise the landmark for agricultural activities.

RELATION TO „BEE-PROJECT“

First of all, we would like to incorporate a close relation with the windmill Johanna. The produced honey could be sold at baking days and the baked goods could use the honey as an ingredient. Next to the windmill we would like to build an information kiosk, which explains the whole „Bee-Ing Wilhelmsburg“ project. We like the fact, that the project is supported by locals. Several associations support the project and keep it running. It is a firmly established element of Wilhelmsburg.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE LEGACY OF THE IBA

The idea and concept for revitalising the windmill Johanna has been a long process. The organisational committee needed more than 10 years, to get all the necessary approvals. It seems, that the windmill is frequently used. This is mainly based on the fact, that the whole project is strongly supported by several associations, such as the country women or the low German group. However, thanks to the fincancial support by the IBA and others, the project could be implemented and is now running on its own.

MONEY GROWS ON TREES evaluation

RELATION TO AGRICULTURE

The project definitely relates to agriculture. It manages the productivity of the landscape, the use of available - but not harvested - resources (apples) in private gardens and public spaces in Hamburg.

RELATION TO „BEE-PROJECT“

The “Money grows on Trees-Project” seems to very successful in combining various elements: taking advantage of naturally available resources - the apples - and the integrating of marginalised groups. With the addition of a second bussiness activity, they extend their circle of customers and might get more apples to harvest. We definitely like the fact, that they use of a variety of apples, which are native to the region. Like this, old strains do not vanish but stay an important element of our surroundins. Furthermore, 100% of the proceeds reflow into the company and is used to pay the employees wages.

RELATIONSHIP TO THE LEGACY OF THE IBA

The “Money grows on Trees-Project” was already implemented before the IBA became part of the collaborators. The financial support surely helped to project get establish and to get some publicity. Although the IBA finished some month ago, the project is still successfully running.
