Code of Practice for Florists Introduction Although there are many factors which can influence the success and profitability of a retail florist there are two key factors which can significantly affect this;i. The artistic ability of the florist ii. The active incorporation of a structured approach in buying, handling and selling flowers or; “code of practice”

1. Selecting your Flowers • When buying your flowers make sure that they are not immature. Such young flower stems will not open consistently and in addition unripe flowers such as rose buds will suffer dehydration with a high possibility of bent neck for example. • In order for the florist to be able to guarantee a vase life to the customer make sure that the flowers purchased will be able to achieve the sales period including days up to the point of sale as well as the consumer vase life guaranteed. • Check with your supplier as to whether your flowers have received a post harvest treatment. The difference in lasting ability and performance between non-pre-treated and pre-treated flowers is substantial.

2. Hygiene • Ensure that all work areas, surfaces and utensils such as knives and scissors are frequently cleaned to prevent the build up of bacteria and spread of disease. This should be conducted on a daily basis. • Remove dead leaves and flowers which should never be left on work benches and floors as this can encourage Botrytis. • Clean all flower containers thoroughly with a proprietary cleaner such as Chrysal Professional Cleaner after use and before restocking with new flowers. A bespoke formulation such as Chrysal Cleaner is extremely effective and will not harm flowers if residues are left. If bleach is used it can be detrimental to certain flower species as well being corrosive and staining clothing etc if spilt. • Don’t forget to run the cleaner through the Dosing Unit to maintain hygiene and prevent blockage on a regular basis. NB: Metallic containers should not be used in conjunction with any flower food product due to adverse chemical reactions. These reactions significantly impair flower quality and erode the metal of the containers. If you choose to use these types of container use a plastic liner or bucket inside.

3. Flower Storage • Ideally keep flowers in a cold store at between 5oC and 10oC with the humidity set between 80 and 95%. • Avoid opening the doors too often causing temperature changes as this will also help avoid problems with Botrytis. • Keep this area spotlessly clean. • Flowers should not be kept with high ethylene producing produce such as tomatoes and fruit as this will rapidly reduce the flowering potential. • Temperature sensitive flowers such as orchid species, Euphorbia fulgens or Anthuriums are best kept at 12 – 15oC. • In promoting air circulation leave a gap between stored product and the wall of the cold store • Ideally incorporate a fan for efficient circulation • Disinfect cold store walls and floors regularly • Try to ensure that floors are kept as dry as possible.

4. Display • Arrange displays by flower and colour • Make sure there’s at least 10cm of water in the flower buckets and they are evenly displayed and not tilted • Avoid draughts • Top up with Chrysal Clear Professional 2 where necessary • Never mix old and new flowers. Operate a FIFO stock management system i.e. first in first out and try to limit storage time to one day • Remove wilting flowers. • Clean the display area daily 6

5. Conditioning Flowers • It is important to re-hydrate all dry-pack flowers for a minimum of 4 hours before placing on sale preferably in a cool environment. • Re-cut stems with a sharp knife removing all foliage that will sit beneath the water line • Never scrape, bash or hammer the stem as this will cause damage and stimulate bacterial infection, reducing vase life. • Avoid removing thorns where at all practical as similarly this will provide a “wound” where bacteria can develop. • If a mechanical defoliator is used, it is important to keep a check on the condition of the “brushes”. • Place flowers into containers with a bespoke conditioner such as Chrysal Clear Professional 2 Processing Solution. • Professional 2 contains 70% less food than bulk flower food products, providing just enough food to “hold” the flower and quality without “blowing”. It also contains additional active ingredients to aid water uptake and rapid re-hydration of the flowers. • In trials of 150 florists, the use of Professional 2 reduced flower wastage, labour, and water consumption each by an average of 50%. • Always use fresh tap water. • Do not mix “old” solution with fresh ones • Accurate dosing is important. If too much is used it is a waste of money. If too little is used, the benefits of the conditioner will be significantly reduced. • The best method of dosing accurately is to use a Dosing Unit. Although there are various models available the Chrysal Dosing Unit is ideal. It works on water pressure alone and is “guaranteed for life” by Chrysal. • Whatever conditioner is used, ask the producer to check your dose rate. Reputable companies will be pleased to offer this service should you require it. Chrysal offer this service free of charge – should you require a sample to be tested contact the Chrysal Office on 0113 3074050 or send a sample to Chrysal UK Ltd, Ardsley Mills, Bradford Road, East Ardsley, Leeds, WF3 2DW.

6. Point of Sale • Floral foam should be soaked in Chrysal Clear Professional 3. Professional 3 is the bulk form of the flower food sachet providing “full load” food to the foam arrangement to maximise longevity and performance. • Always add a sachet or stick pack of Chrysal Clear Cut Flower Food to all flower sales along with care advice. As well as helping the flowers and buds fully develop in size, colour and scent, the flower food dissolves clearly making it perfect in all glass and crystal containers. • Although a sachet for 1/2 litre of solution is generally sufficient for small bunches (e.g. pinks or short stemmed roses), most bouquets require at least a sachet for one litre of solution. Consider the size of the bouquet and the vase it is likely to be placed in. Larger arrangements will require several sachets. • Chrysal also produce speciality flower foods such as Rose and Bulb, developed to further enhance vase life performance and maintain leaf colour. The additional additives do not adversely affect mixed bouquets and this type of flower food should be used when roses or bulb flowers predominate. • Although the flower food sachet is viewed by many to be a “give-away”, don’t forget to cost this in to your make-up costs. The “few pence” cost of the sachet will more than justify itself given the substantial beneficial effect achieved. • Finally either by word of mouth or care leaflet, remind your customer to use their flower food!

Final few thoughts on careful conditioning of your flowers... There are many myths surround alternatives to commercially produced flower food: here are just a few: Bleach: The disinfectants do keep bacteria at bay, but can also damage flower as it oxidises stem tissues. Copper coins: Many people still believe that the copper from coins is beneficial to flowers, but this has no visible effect on the flowers’ performance in addition to the fact that very few coins these days actually contain copper! Pins: This is a traditional method of straightening a tulip. However this serves no benefit to the flower and only creates an opening wound giving bacteria an easy access point. To conclude, stay loyal to the commercially manufactured flower food which has been specifically developed to do that job!
