Henry Christy returned to England from Constantinople with a sample of looped pile fabric, which was new to the Western World. His brother, Richard Christy analysed how to mechanically reproduce the loop pole, and patented a machine to produce terry towelling on a large scale.
The first terry towel was in production and in 1851 this was shown at the Great Exhibition. Her Majesty, Queen Victoria was presented with a set of these, she immediately ordered more and from then on, demand for towels was high. Christy still holds the letter received from the royal household ordering ‘six dozen’ for the Queen.
Christy replaced hand looms and installed power looms for the manufacture of their towels which enabled much higher quantities of production due to faster speed of production.
William Miller Christy died in 1858 and his sons, who had been involved in the business for some time, equally shared his capital in the business between them to continue Christy as a business.
A towel was created by Christy to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Links with royalty show the continued quality of the products.

Christy celebrated “The Century Achieved”, 100 years of the Royal Turkish Towel. There was an exhibition and parties were held for the press and buyers who were all given a copy of the celebration booklet ‘100 Years of the Royal Turkish Towel’.
Christy produced a special towel to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II; this was presented to Her Majesty as a gift.
Christy featured adverts in magazines such as Ideal Home as the popularity of the brand continued to grow.
Christy produced a towel to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, which marked the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne. They presented this to Queen Elizabeth as a gift.
Christy produced a special silk scarf to celebrate the Royal wedding of Charles and Diana, they also presented this as a wedding gift to the couple.
Christy became the official Wimbledon Championships tennis supplier. The Wimbledon name is synonymous not only with the world class, premier tennis event but with quality, tradition and heritage. It is therefore no surprise that the relationship shared had proved to be a winning doubles partnership for over two decades.

Already available from major department stores and good linen shops across the UK, Christy products are exported through subsidiaries in the USA where we become a major supplier to Bloomingdales.
Using our strong knowledge of cottons gained from our towel production we introduce our first bed linen range. The range boasts high thread counts, intricate embroidery and beautifully woven designs in a combination of classic and contemporary styling.
In honour of our 160th birthday we have created a special luxury towel – Heritage Royal Turkish. The design based on the first ever woven towels (made by us and presented to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria). A wonderful quality of cotton was carefully selected, grown only in Turkish Mesopotamia, a land rich in cotton growing pedigree.
The first stand alone boutique style Christy store was opened in Chester in the second half of 2012. Christy also introduced a new range of bed linen for AW12 branded ‘Henry Christy’ to express the opulence and luxury of the brand even further.
Christy has updated its branding through introducing a new logo which embraces the both the companies heritage roots and its modernity, there has also been a new website introduced to showcase all of the products.
Christy continues to be part of the global Welspun group but remains to be designed and developed at its head office in Stockport, England. Both the bed linen and towel collections continue to evolve with constantly increasing quality in both the latest designs and construction. Relationships with other companies such as Wimbledon continue to thrive.

WASHING GUIDELINES • Always follow the washing instructions on the label of the towel/bed linen. By adhering to recommended washing instructions you will guarantee long-term enjoyment of your Christy products.

• Ensure that you use the recommended amount of washing detergent. Take care not to expose your towels/bed linen to neat detergent prior to washing. • Select a gentle laundry detergent. Many modern detergents contain bleach or whitening agents. Ideally these should not be used when washing coloured towels/bed linen as they may progressively fade the colour. Using a detergent designed for colours will ensure your towels/bed linen retain their colour for many years. • Limit the use of fabric conditioner on your towels. Whilst they give your towels a soft feel, overuse of conditioner leaves a coating on the towels and reduces the absorbency. • Avoid overloading your washing machine and/ or tumble dryer as this increases the risk of creasing your towels/bed linen. • When the wash cycle has finished remove bed linen promptly from the machine and shake out whilst damp to minimise creasing and drying time.

BLENDS In some bed linen, Christy have used blends of two fibres, for example cotton and linen. The combination of fibre types adds individual properties to the bed linen. Specific features within these blends include slubs in linen and silk which are natural characteristics of these fibres and add to the beauty of these products. COTTON PERCALE This is made from high quality cotton with a thread count of 180 or more. Percale bed linen looks matt and feels smooth to touch. Percale launders beautifully is long lasting and durable. EASY CARE COTTON PERCALE Easy care is a finish added to cotton percale. This finish makes fabrics easier to launder and require less ironing. Easy care finishes do gradually wash out over time. COTTON SATEEN This is also generally made from a combed cotton thread, which is woven in a different way, to produce bed linen with a sophisticated sheen that feels luxuriously soft and smooth against the skin. As well as having a lovely handle and drape, cotton sateen bed linen is easier to iron that cotton percale.
• Pulled threads occur when loops catch on sharp objects. Do not pull loose threads - simply cut them off. Christy towels are woven so threads won’t run. To prevent pulled threads avoid washing towels with other garments, which have hooks or zips.
SILK Natural variations and slubs are unique characteristics of all types of silk fabric. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Colour variations may occur.
COLOUR ADVICE
COTTON 50 There are a variety of different cotton plants each of which have their own traditional growing areas. The climate and40growing conditions in these areas produce cotton with different characteristics. The most important of these characteristics is the length and fineness of the individual fibres, the longer and finer it is, the softer, smoother and more lustrous the yarn will be.
• Some facial cleansers and skin treatments contain Benzoyl Peroxide, which has the same effect as bleach. The effect that these products have on your towels/bed linen may not be apparent until after washing. Christy suggest keeping a separate towel when using these products as Benzoyl Peroxide is water insoluble, so may still have the same effect even after thoroughly rinsing your hands and face. • Separate light and dark coloured towels/bed linen, as you would with other items. With darker and brighter colours you may find that some excess dyes wash out during the first few washes.

THREAD COUNTS Thread count is a measure of the quality of fabric and refers to the number of threads used per square inch of fabric. Percale fabrics have a thread count of 180 or more, which results in finer bed linen. Christy bed linen is over 200 thread count and thus is classed as percale.
• For best results tumble dry your towels/bed linen on a gentle heat. This will give your towels the softest finish and help reduce creasing on your bed linen. Do not dry your bed linen for longer than necessary. • Iron your bed linen whilst still slightly damp: it’s easier! In the event that bed linen has been over dried, use a water spray to dampen fabric before ironing.
• Bleach will remove the colour from your Christy towels/bed linen permanently. Avoid contact with surface or bathroom cleaners.

UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT FABRIC/FIBRE TYPES SUPIMA COTTON Supima cotton produces one of the finest cotton yarns in the world with its extra long fibres giving a luxurious, silky handle. EGYPTIAN COTTON One of the most luxurious cotton fibres is sourced from Egypt on the banks of the river Nile. Egyptian cotton has long fibres and is renowned for it’s softness and lustre. Bed linen woven from Egyptian cotton feels cool and crisp to the touch. LINEN / COTTON This is ideal for those who love the coolness and texture of linen, but want the ease of laundering cotton.The natural characteristics of linen may include some small yarn irregularities in the fabric. The handle of linen/cotton bed linen will improve after the first wash. 50

This symbol indicates that bleach should not be used when laundering this product. Not even on white bed linen. The chemicals in bleach seriously damage fabric and colour.
This indicates the temperature at which you should iron your bed linen for best results. The more dots, the hotter the iron is required. Christy recommends that you iron pillowcases inside out.
This indicates whether or not you can dry clean an item. Christy do not recommend dry cleaning their bed linen. However some of our accessories such as throws and cushions may require dry cleaning.
