WHAT IS SCHERÌA
S
cherìa is one of the largest Community Coop. in the south of Italy. It is a great social experiment: it involves 36 people who have been working for two years on the implementation of socio-economic development projects in the territory of Tiriolo - from the recovery of uncultivated land with organic agricultural practices (Terre di Comunità project), to the promotion and sales of the fine local craftsmanship product (Manufactum project). Scherìa has been pursuing a socio-entrepreneurial strategy for two years - with long-term and slow developing projects, which are shared and participated in, as well as real, concrete and enduring. In October 2018, Scherìa launched the project called «Tiriolo Antica» (Ancient Tiriolo), co- financed with the «Cultura Crea» grant, by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The project involves renovation, development and management of the Archaeological Museum and the Archaeological Park of Tiriolo, their promotion and value assessment - together with the surrounding land, its resources, and people.
WHAT IS «TURISMO RESPONSABILE » (RESPONSIBLE TOURISM)
«T
urismo Responsabile» is the Tour agent that cooperates with Scherìa. «Turismo Responsabile» offers alternative travel itineraries for Italy and abroad, through «GOEL’S Travels». It uses environment-friendly hospitality facilities that are managed according to ethical and legal standards and provide a high quality service and aren’t a part of the mafia circuit. «Turismo responsabile» is a part of GOEL Cooperative community, born in the area of Locri, Calabria, to make real changes in the territory. It works on the integration of disadvantaged people into the community, providing jobs for the unemployed. The community takes actions against ‘ndrangeta (the mafia), not only uncovering its presence and activities but with that demonstrating that ethics is not just a rearguard choice of those «noble minds» but is, in fact, an effective and quality response.

WHY TIRIOLO?
T
iriolo has something to offer to anyone: a village of ancient foundation, with houses perched at the foot of the castle; the majestic silhouette of Mount Tiriolo with its legends, caves and the Byzantine fortress; the Archaeological park Gianmartino with its monumental structures of the 4th century B.C., coated and finely decorated; naturalistic trails in the two valleys of the rivers Corace and Amato. All this enhanced with a rich enogastronomic tradition, with artisan shops that for centuries have been preserving an important knowledge of creative craftsmanship, and all this overlooks the narrowest isthmus of Italy between the two seas: Ionian and Tyrrhenian.

THE REGIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
T
he Regional Archaeological Museum holds some of the most important findings that have been brought to light over the last decades in the territory of Tiriolo. Among many of them, the highlights are: the copy of an inscription «Senatusconsultim de Bachanalibus», an Oscan curse tablet and a monumental Brettian tomb. In the nearest future, the museum will welcome some extraordinary findings discovered in 2014-2016 excavation campaigns in the area of Gianmartino. In the museum, there is also an exposition of traditional Calabrian clothes. Duration

Archaeology, history and architecture
ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK GIANMARTINO
T
he urban archaeological park Gianmartino is located right behind the museum building. Researched from 2014 to 2016, it is now an important witness of the long history of Tiriolo, and even more - it is a place of extraordinary historical and archaeological importance. The construction dates back to the 4th century B.C.; it has preserved the walls of 1.5 meters high, the wall coatings and the mosaics representing the dolphins (which gave the name to the Dolphin Palace). THE OLD TOWN AND THE CASTLE OF SAINT ANGEL
T
he old town of Tiriolo is dominated by the ruins of the Castle of Saint Angel, surrounded by magical narrow lanes, antique aristocratic palaces of the 17th-18th centuries and two of the main churches of the town. At the foot of the village, you find the main square, which still holds the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, Alemanni Palace, the viewpoint over the two seas and the church of the Cigala princes. THE FORT-MOUNTAIN PARK

he Fort-Mountain Park contains the remains of the ancient kastron (fortress), built in the Byzantine period on Mount Tiriolo. A large part of the perimeter, the southern gate, three towers and the foundation of the church are still well-preserved today. Duration

MANUFACTUM’ EXHIBHIT HALL OF SCHERÌA
T
he Manufactum, Scherìa’s exhibition hall, contains a representative selection of the excellent examples of the artistic craftsmanship from Tiriolo and not only. From traditional violin making to weaving and pottery, the hall also hosts temporary art exhibitions. In addition to that, it is possible to purchase handicraft products, which are all united by the ethical nature of the production processes, careful choice of materials and the uniqueness of the products themselves. THE GREEN GOLD OF TIRIOLO

he Torchia oil mill offers a visit to the company site and not only: depending on the season and weather, it can be possible to take a walk in the olive grove and watch the harvest, enter the mill and see it in action, or have a chat with the shepherd - which will show you the process of milking the sheeps. KING NILIO’S PATH
T
he excursion itinerary follows the pathway of King Nilio that was convicted to not being able to go out in the sunlight - every night, before dawn, he returned from his palace to the cave where he was hiding for years. The journey starts at Piazza Italia and continues up to the top of Mount Tiriolo, along a comfortable, wide and paved path. Difficulty

ULYSSES IN THE LAND OF THE FEACI
M
any scholars suggest identifying Homer’s Land of the Feaci and the Alcinous Palace with the isthmus of Catanzaro and the center of Tiriolo. Scherìa invites you on a journey that will bring you to the washhouses where Ulysses met Nausicaa, and to the stream that the hero followed to reach the madman of Alcinoo. Along the way, you’ll see the remains of bridges and aqueducts of the 16th century and ruins of majestic mills of the’ 18th century, which will give you an insight of the real life of old Tiriolo. very year the sky of Tiriolo gets filled with hundreds of birds, especially predators, which in spring and autumn pass through the village returning to the North, or, on the contrary, go back to the warmer lands of the world. Other details If you are a passer-by looking for information and the Museum in Via Pitagora is closed… don’t worry! With the Ancient Tiriolo project, Scherìa is creating the widespread InfoPoint: at tobacco shops, bars, pharmacies, and shops of Tiriolo. The ones participating in the initiative will have a symbol displayed. There you will be able to find all the information you need.
How to reach us Tiriolo is less than half an hour drive from the airport and Lamezia Terme train station. A car rental service is available at the airport. But if you prefer, call us and we will come and pick you up with our shuttle service!
