PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Queensland University of Technology - Undergraduate Studies Simon Macdonald

From an early age, I have always been intrigued by the built environment. Not purely for its aesthetic qualities; but I have often pondered on how architecture holistically integrates with the locale, culture and urban fabric. Personally, design to me is an unconscious reflection on how we view ourselves; structure and make sense of society through built form. Design also provides us a direct vehicle for change; giving us the opportunity to delve into the current issues in a bid to devise design solutions; explore new concepts of living; and project to others what we aspire to become. Throughout the past four years, my tertiary education has heightened my passion for design, and enabled me to explore the ethos stated above through theoretical projects. I revel in seeing the birth of initial ideas, the development and growth of a concepts being concreted onto paper. There is something very satisfying to see the fruits of your labor from an embryonic thought to derive at a built form. As I near the completion of my degree, University has taught me how to consolidate a range of ideas and implement lateral thinking to achieve cohesive design solutions. As a graduate Architect, I aspire to work in a firm which will enable me to work and learn alongside established design professionals; allowing me to develop and refine new and existing skills; whilst enabling me to mature and ripen into a sharpened design professional.

HOWARD SMITH WHARVES NODE

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN FIVE INSTRUCTOR : YASU YASOMOTI

|

SMALL SCALE INTERACTION CENTRE

DESIGN FORCES The intent of Howard Smith Wharves Meditation Facility was to design an educational space defined by size constraints and with consideration to construction and life cycle of the build. Three main forces encouraged the realisation of this project, with historic site context; psychological connotations affiliated with exercise, and the locale informing the final design. Form and tectonic materiality of the educational node references the site's heritage as a prevalent shipping and port facility; with the main volume of space enhancing the meditation experience; with a suspended double skin facade creating a constant interplay of light and shadow within the node. In a bid to encourage and foster learning of psychological exercise, users can freely access meditational curriculum through an application on their smart phone device initiated by the local city council.

FORM MORPHOLOGY

LOCALE INTERVENTION AND INFLUENCE With the educational node located in one of the last undisturbed sites for civic redevelopment, this project integrated the Brisbane populace within the preliminary stages to influence the design of the build and to evaluate feasibility of the concept. Through quantitative data collection, criterion assessed ranged from current exercise habits, appeal and likelihood of use; to general concerns with meditational exercise within a public setting. With an overwhelming response of likelihood of use from the public; key concepts of privacy, cleanliness and group size was addressed in this project to ensure end-user appeal of the meditational exercise facility; promoting hubs of activity for Howard Smith Wharves.

Do you exercise on a regular basis? No Seldom Yes

What exercise do you currently partake in? Conventional Gym Meditation Other Cardiovascular Exercise

What exercise would you most like to experience? Other Swimming Conventional Gym Meditational Exercise

Does the idea of meditational exercise appeal to you? No Yes

If an establishment was offering free health classes would you use it on a regular basis? No Yes

Would you ever take part in exercise in a group environment? No Depends on Group Size Yes

What would be the optimal group size for exercise? Under Five Six to Ten Eleven to Fifteen Other

What are your main concerns with exercise in a public? Personal Appearance Access to Utilities Personal Embarrassment Hygiene

06-07

ZONING PROGRAM Through size constraints from the original brief and public needs found from the data collected; this project was divided into three major zones. Whilst the main activity space dominates most of the allowable area for the build; vertical volumes were exploited within the Node to allow for temporary storage and utility services

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES/FEASIBILITY CONCEPT With the proposed node located on an expansive site with limited energy resources available; harnessing storm water and landscape design was considered in the project to for fill the need for cleanliness and thermal comfort. Borrowed yoga mats installed within the wall of the meditational node are steam cleaned every use from grey water collected from the roof; whilst strategic landscaping and placement of louvre windows exploit indirect evaporative cooling for the occupants.

KELVIN GROVE FAMILY DWELLING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THREE INSTRUCTOR : ADAM WIGG

|

SMALL SCALE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

DESIGN STATEMENT Located in the heart of Kelvin Grove, the intent for this single family residence was to create a dwelling which harnessed and promoted family connectivity; whilst providing a retreat for the occupants from the demands of everyday life. In a bid to encourage family connectivity for the owners, the spatial program was purposely scaled back to necessities required for living; with an emphasis on generous, open communal spaces. The proposed materials of Kelvin Grove residence adopted the above ethos, with minimal maintenance and beauty bestowed with age; the e dwelling enables the owners to focus on socialization ion with friends and d family as opposed to traditional upkeep on the house. ZONING PROGRAM The proposed residence capitalises on the sites unforgiving terrain, with the program divided into three major zones. With the dislocation of the program, all rooms have access to Brisbane’s metropolitan landscape; whilst public living quarters enable socialisation on all scales to take place, and private living quarters attain maximum privacy and retreat.

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES With Kelvin Grove located in a sup-tropical environment, access to solar gain and cross ventilation was considered in the design to ensure thermal comfort for the habitants. Through material and angle strategies the roof design of the residence blocks summer solar gains whilst capturing winter sun. With the program composed in a pavilion aesthetic; the dwelling’s shallow plan exploits wind gains from the north-east to ensure cross ventilation in the residence.

COORPAROO MULTI RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN SIX | INSTRUCTOR: ROSEMARY KENNEDY

MULTIRESIDENTIAL & URBAN DESIGN

DESIGN STATEMENT Situated within a theatrical context of 2050, the intent or Riess Apartments in Coorparoo was to design a high density living which is permissive to both macro and micro contexts and reflected the psychological aspects of Australian Suburbia. The complex, comprising of a three floor podium with a forty-five metre tower in the northern sector, with a further three floors in the North Eastern corner of the site; can transform all spatial functionality to satisfy the locale’s needs and maintain relevancy within the rapidly changing urban fabric of 2050. In a bid to alleviate psychological aspects of high density living, residences per floor are purposely kept to a minimum; to mimic and encourage street communities evident within suburban neighbourhoods. Communal sky gardens located on each floor provide a ‘vertical’ backyard for occupants, often lost with multi-residential living.

URBAN FABRIC INFLUENCES Whilst the present urban environment for Coorparoo is primarily low density residential with commercial, business and educational institutions flanking main transportation corridors; the projected urban fabric for Coorparoo is expected to transform significantly following a review on the Brisbane City Master plan in 2017. With the theatrical context pertaining a deteriorating ecological environment, restriction on urban sprawl and rapid population growth; it is proposed designers have begun to appropriate the ideologies associated with satellite town planning principles within high density urban environments.

By 2050, the immediate building typologies surrounding the development are envisioned to be high density multi-purpose buildings; with varying commercial, business and residential programs.

Current transportation routes will be prevalent within the future urban fabric, however established rail and vehicular corridors will be connected with a pedestrian mall with light rail transportation alternatives.

With Coorparoo’s future persona as a district for outdoor eateries, markets and green spaces takes hold of the urban fabric; green spaces permeate the neighbourhood strengthening connectivity to surrounding precincts.

DWELLING ADAPTABILITY With individuals living arrangements evolving over one’s life, all dwellings within the multi-residential complex have the ability to adapt to one’s circumstances. Habitant’s can buy, sell or lease neighbouring floorspace through the body corporate to mold their units to their needs, strengthening pyschological aspects on the concept of place and community.

HALL OF DEMOCRACY ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN EIGHT INSTRUCTOR : DAVID NIELSEN

|

LARGE SCALE CIVIC DESIGN

DESIGN STATEMENT Situated within the Queen's Wharf District of Brisbane CBD, the client's brief requested a large scale civic building – which encouraged greater interaction between public servants and the locale; in a bid to reinstall trust in the democratic systems within the populace. The theoretical requirements articulated the build had to be contemporary in glass design; whilst being environmentally responsible within a subtropical context. The response to the brief was derived from two key concepts; 'Democratic Voyeurism' and implementing emergent design theory. Exploiting voyeurism as a concept, spaces within the build have been orchestrated to enable transparency, confrontational encounters and interaction of governance. As opposed to the designer dictating the form of the build; emergent design theory enabled the populace to have a direct impact on the build. Through examination of current and projected pedestrian movements on site and within the district, form and master planning of this development was influenced by the locale. With a time frame of fourteen weeks, the project delved into the chronological stages within architectural design, with the final result achieving a full set of council approved construction documentation.

ZONING PROGRAM The spatial program for the Hall of Democracy has been deliberately composed to maximise encounter and interaction; in a bid to provide a voyeuristic connectivity with parliamentarians and the Brisbane locale. Public spaces are purposely kept open plan – punctured by voids - and intertwined with private offices to enable visual contact for all end users throughout the build. Commercial, retail and utility services are not immune to this voyeuristic dialogue; with carefully composed materials such as brushed aluminum sheeting and one way glass to aid in the transparent architectural vocabulary.

Asymmetrical Butterfly Roof as a Shading Device for Occupants

Indirect Evaporative Cooling & Stacked Ventilation Methods

Power Generation through Transparent Photo-voltaic Cells

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES FEASIBILITY CONCEPT

&

With the client's brief articulating the development to be ecologically responsible; subtle strategies where implemented in both the building and master planning of the proposal. With execution of an asymmetrical butterfly roof; the build is protected from harsh summer solar gains whilst welcoming winter sun exposure. Purposely set back from the property boundary, the surrounding green plaza activates the ground plane; whilst strategically placed flora aids in the stacked cooling of the structure and it's occupants. With glass the primary facade material; a kinetic ethos was adopted. Implementing E10 glazing with transparent photo-voltaic cells – the double glazed curtain wall can transition into a shading device whilst providing thirty five per cent of the builds energy resource. 46-47
