Museum for the time that passed
T
he archaeological museum of Bavay lies on the site of the excavation of the biggest forum of Gaules though it is now in a 5 000 inhabitants small north of France town. The surprising discovery of an important Roman city in this small urbanity led to a landscape that can be seen as a collage in which two cities fight : the ultra-regulated Roman city, BAGACUM and the archaically developed medieval city BAVAY. To fulfil the picture, this already non-matching landscape was turned even more chaotic in 1944, when bombs fell and unearthed or re-earthed some parts of the two entities. .

The museum is perceived as a neutral temporality in this
everlasting fight between past, Bagacum and present, Bavay. To do so, we have to accept the urban uniqueness of the museum as a mean to start a dialogue between the two entities.
1 - Perspective of the NAOS. 2 - Axonometry of the exhibition spaces.
A neutral area that enlightens the collage and make us clearly feel history and the accidents that emerged from it, the time that passed, the major role of an archaeological museum.

n inner/outer circulation starts from the gable of the neighbouring typical house and gives access to the four levels. It surrounds and frames a void, a patio, that also constitutes the fire access of the neighbouring residential block, a mandatory constraint on the site. The first two levels constitute the reception and yoga room: simple spaces made of curtains, wooden posts and light filtered by the translucent envelope. Boxes in the box, Yogi master’s dwelling is nestled on the 3rd level, he refocuses on himself. On the top floor is the large terrace where you can practice yoga in the open air or go to the tea room, overhanging the street with a view on the canal.

The whole building is turned into a bathtub, inner walls fall, just a brick skin comes to shelter the water, the pool becomes a shrine, we swim in the ruin (1)

of the bath is brought by white volumes housing the facilities. Materials such as curtains and tiles lighten those volumes and play with the roughness of the brick to turn this bath time into a voluptuous time (2)

sume that the baths were build at the same time as Yuchbunar itself, in the early 1920’s. The plan is simple and efficient, characterized by a strong symmetry induced by the man/woman partition. The project breaks this symmetry now outdated and brings back these baths to contemporaneity by simply inserting new functions. Only the main walls are preserved and still frame the space. The edifice is externalized, reduced to its carcass. The ruin is inhabited.
page 16
Metallic volumes cladded with corrugated sheets house
the functions of the bath (changing room, showers, reception, cafĂŠ). Materials such as curtains and white tiles contrast with the roughness of the brick carcass. We stroll among plants and almost collapsed walls; as the steam starts filling up the air, humidity rises - giving the sensations of a jungle to the space. In the main space, we find three pools heated at different temperatures. Two vertical towers shelter behind curtains more private spaces : where to lay, where to sweat and where to hide.
1 - Perspective of the reception. 2 - 1st floor plan.
page 18
How can we build such a complex/ hybrid building on a site where too much informations are already given? The answer may lie in the historic fabric of the city where industry and housing were once mixed in the same plot . The great dichotomia is here the very nature of the building, here lies the secret of Molenbeek (1)

he ground floor generates the entries of the three components : the inhabitants, the employees, the buyers. The internal organisation makes possible for the two different temporalities of industry and housing to coexist by setting up intermediate ÂŤlayersÂť. A service strip managing the lift systems and also the technical networks isolates the dwellings from the industry. The industry is vertically articulated on 3 levels : above is the production space, storage space and sales area on the ground floor. The offices are located on the north side towards the crossroads.

The 50 dwellings are arranged in mono oriented stripes.
Over a thickness of 5,40 meters, overlap a 1,50 meters thick strip of “services” and a 3,90 meters thick strip of “life”. The terrace, 2m40 wide, is like an “extra room” where the inhabitants can do some tinkering, gardening, eating... It also ventilates and brings light to the interior circulation. The strip of “services” 1,50 meters thick is materialized by a tiling and contains the kitchen, storage and bathroom and is separated and partitioned by a curtain. It phonetically isolates the dwellings from the industry.
