W

ith every emerging technology comes a set of assumptions regarding its potential for use. With the advent of mobilebased scanning apps, mass surveillance, and more ubiquitous availability of these technologies, we must prepare for the possibilities of problematic use. This publication attempts to highlight areas for risk management or risk utilization within the realm of 3D scanning.

INFRARED AS PREVENTION IR LEDS TO STOP A 3D SCAN

T

he advent of personal 3D scanning technologies allows for exponentially easier capture of the physical world with each technological advance-

ment. As these technologies become easier and easier to use, with a lower barrier of entrance and even faster methods of capture, 3D scanning will become ever-more ubiquitous in usage and availability. Unfortunately, alongside ubiquitous usage comes ubiquitous mis-usage. It isn’t hard to imagine a world in which you could be 3D scanned at any time, simply by someone passing by you on the street. Once a person has a copy of the imaged self, the possibilities for modification, misrepresentation, and general misuse of an identity are endless.

T

he risk that 3D scanning has toward my own physical being and experience is a risk of identity. Although many of us, myself included, are

consistently extending our identities into the digital on a daily basis, we are generally doing this consensually. Our actions are decisive and curated.

I

imagine I would be most at risk for nonconsensual scanning when I’m in public spaces. MBTA stations, the café I work at, and institutions are the

most likely spaces for obtrusive use of this technology.

4

Therefore, we’ve developed a small USB charge-able keychain device, that’s roughly the size of a flash drive. An array of small Infrared LEDS or (ideally) high-powered diodes on this device can be turned on with the touch of a button, blinding any laser-equipped 3D scanner’s abilities to scan.

Although this hasn’t been tested in much of a capacity, this prevention device should also blind any security cameras to some extent, removing some of the risk for photograph based scanning techniques.

In 1927, the Egyptian government gave the MFA a bust of Prince Ankhhaf, as a thank you for their excavation efforts. It is now 2015, and the Egyptian Government has been asking for this bust back since 2005. Given the history of looting and colonization on the part of the American people, it appears only right to have this artifact returned to its original resting place, as part of Egyptian cultural history. The MFA has claimed ownership over the Ankhhaf, and has refused to return the item due

THE UNCANNY VALLEY Uncanny Valley

10

I

would like the prafce this proposal with a timeline of events. First, in 2011, we see the release of Disney’s Mars Needs Moms - a seemingly innocent film following a young boy who lands on the martian planet.

Unfortunately for Disney, this film completely flops due to the creepiness of CGI that was just too close to “real.”

I

n 2014, Microsoft and Intel team up to begin work on utilizing RealSense 3D cameras as authentication

technologies.

Furthermore,

both

Microsoft

and

Intel advertise facial construction, animation, and transposition of your “digital” self onto digital bodies. At GDC in 2015, Epic Games explains their methods of collecting material to use in their Unreal Engine a graphics engine primarily utilized for video game creation.

These methods included the systematic breakdown of natural environments into components, and extremely detailed scanning of natural forms. And finally, for years now Google and Apple, alongside other parties, have been 3D scanning the entire globe for their mapping software. Although this data is primarily still privatized, a second model of the world exists that is ever growing closer to full represntation. All of these events come together when connected to the theory of the Uncanny Valley. This theory basically states that there is an area in representation that will bring humans to discomfort, if representation is just slightly off what is accepted as real. I am positing that we are moving into an area, as a culture, of technological prowess to the point that the Uncanny Valley may start to dissolve. How about a world in which we suddenly have new-found documentation of past civil disobedience - in which the nonviolent resistance “fights back.” What if that documentation meant justification for further oppression. A world where you’re Facetiming your “mom”, while she’s actually busy somewhere else, responding by text or not even under her own agency. In a pickand-place world, at what point would we stop paying attention or even care to recognize the differences.

EnVironMEnt! LIDAR for more of us

With every emerging technology comes with it a set of expectations and ideals of potential applications. Within the realm of 3D scanning and environment, the current claims and applications are quite underwhelming and potentially dangerous in their ignorance. First up we have the example of ScanLab and their glorification of scanned environments.Specifically with their collaborative Greenpeace work on g lacial scans, they promise some sort of heightened reality through the use of their technologies, while relegating their projects to the passage of time. While their glacial scans may look nice and represent an important changing environment, the scans do not point any fingers toward the reason behind such drastic changes. The same goes for projects like FA BMOB’sa tmospheric spectacles. By 3D scanning an atmosphere and proceeding to print it as a 3D model, with their only “simple goal” being “th e expression of contemporary culture — networked society — as a gesture through public design”, they effectively generate an purely aesthetic object from extremely loaded data. Parallel to this is recent work using drones to 3D scan the Matterhorn, which acquired quite a bit of news coverage. None of this ne ws coverage,n or senseFly, made any mention of alarming fact that the Ma tterhorn is literally disintegrating due to global warming.-

Virtual Reality and 3D scanning technologies, although exciting, often bring with them a certain baggage that we have culturally placed upon these objects for a while now. The idea that these technologies offer a better, realer, more accessible interpretation of our physical world. Often, alongside this outlook comes an ignorance toward those who physically cannot access these technologies, due to physical ‘disability’, political climate, safety of the self, etc. Though it makes some sense, it is strange that software and hardware developers don’t take non-able bodied individuals into account when developing this tech. Often in the past, these technologies have been posited as being extremely useful for non-able bodied people, but in the present, they really aren’t developed for such uses. Only in the highly academic medical and scientific community do we see any real results. Even resources like IOS’s Accessibility featureset are still only tailored to broad concepts of disability, and don’t take into account a singular person’s needs. What I propose is a resource tentatively titled able SDK. This would be a collaborative platform, combining the discursive elements of a platform like Reddit with the collaborative power of GitHub to share, manipulate, and release modified or entirely new SDKs for technologies as they enter the market. I imagine that this platform would ideally be partnered with companies like Oculus, Samsung, Microsoft, and Intel to share their own code and offer feedback. What I hope this idea would bring would be a variety of different SDKs for different uses and disabilities, never stuck to singular concepts.
