revealing the unseen - designing the intangible experience The bakery moves around the structure on top of Aarhus. It spreads the joy of fragrance, tells the story of the daily rythm, becomes the new city clock and awakes the consciousness of food. The bakery functions as a daily meeting point for locals when bread is lifted down and sold as a tribute to nature.

Aarhus and future environmental challenges - masterplanning Aarhus will be flooded in the future and most significantly in this masterplan we have placed a structure on top of the city. In the future this will serve as food ressource in the shape of hunting, several initiatives in energy, food, community and other things that take the city in a sustainable direction.

A TOOL FOR ARCHIVING TUTORS: TOMMY BRUUN, FABIO GIGONE, NIELS MARTIN LARSEN, KASPER RIIS JENSEN TYPE OF PROJECT: INDIVIDUAL WORK

’A Tool for Archiving’ is an architecture rooted in the current that talks about the past, aiming for the future. It has the purpose of collecting fragments of the existing to pass it on. The project is situated in one

of Aarhus’ ’hottest’ cultural areas anno 2012 and deals with issues regarding urban transformation and expansion in relation to historical and future perspective. The proposed architecture is a tool for creating new neighborhood identity within

the new areas masterplanned to come. The archive encapsulate the existing, what has been, to open up a future democratic discussion. - The Ritual - The Procedure The Archive - The passing on -

past, present, future - programming architecture With eye for an upcoming restructuring and an understanding of the historical perspective in the understanding of identity, and how the current Godsbanen spirit to some extent is in line with future planning, I want to establish and introduce an archive that will form the frame of a collection of personal stories from the current life of Godsbanen. It is a collection of artifacts, rooted in what has been, telling stories of the current with a focus of passing on to the future.

The Archive provides the setting for a collection of personal archives of stories that relate to perceived experiences at Godsbanen. The archive is a collection of stories from the current Godsbanen which aims to pass on its contents of stories to the upcoming neighborhood in relation to a future self-reflecting process. The archive has the purpose of becoming a platform that tells about the former and hereby awakes and become the foundation of an identity discussion through reflection.

material investigation - robotics & casting with LECA As part of the project I investigated the potentials of using LECA as construction material. These investigations concerned potentials in shaping with robotic techniques, strength testings at the School of Engineering and insulations tests concerning heat potential. In the archive, LECA is used as the main material in constructing the outer wall system. The use of LECA is inspired by The Pardo House by Jorge Pardo and is a eco-friendly based material, a light weight material and has high insulation cement values. By sanding, the material gets a clean and rough look when breaking When using concrete the LECA nuts. the result was

Since the results from our previous casting was a disaster because of the choice of leca as binder, we decided to go back and try it with cement instead. New formwork was milled and hotwire cut to be able to try the process a second time.

completely different. The new castings came out close to perfect. This clearly shows a distinction between the two binders. Concrete is preferable although the environmental impact is larger.

ANTIQUE MUSEUM AARHUS TUTOR: ANDRIETTE AHRENKIEL TYPE OF PROJECT: MAINLY INDIVIDUAL WORK, GROUP PRE-PHASE

It brings forward a historical understanding that contributes to the architectural proposal and relates to the history within an antique museum itself.

Through several tests within the design of the facade, the facade is now opened up with an entrance towards the amphitheater. The glass facade connects the inner and outer spaces and make them both spaces for exhibition. Inside an atrium has been added connecting the floor plans and bringing in light to the heart of the bunker-space. The flow has been made circular instead of former one-way movement and the arrangement of pillars allows the curator freely to interact with the spaces. A

FOOD WASTE TUTOR: WALTER UNTERRAINER TYPE OF PROJECT: GROUP WORK

This project deals with challenges related to the amount of food wasted in our society every day. The intention was to inform, fascinate and provoke people passing on the street and make people think and take a stand. The project was expres-

sed in a spatial street installation at Kloster Torv, Aarhus, with hanging, discarded fruit and vegetables from local supermarkets. Our investigations were based on meetings with local organisations dealing with the problem. This lead

to discussions regarding subjects like communication strategies and education. The project was covered by local radio stations through which the issues of food waste was spread.

’Hanging Fruits’ - the installation The installation focuses on creating aesthetic experiences out of what society usually defines as ‘ugly’, discarded. Food was hanged in relation to human scale, roof height, which through the day could be experienced, interacted with and naturally would change character according to light exposure. The installation took place during winter time with parallels to classic Christmas decorations and was placed at one of Aarhus’ ,pst visited locations, Kloster Torv. The installation was present for four days.

BUILDING A BOATHOUSE TUTOR: STEFANO CIURLO WALKER TYPE OF PROJECT: GROUP WORK

‘Building a Boathouse’ had the purpose of creating a small scale framework for an architectural process from research to design to constructing in 1:1. The project was intended to become part of the marina at Aarhus harbour front and given

to the local sailor community for a social space to meet. Through collective competitive proposals for design and concept, one proposal was chosen for all participants to continue working on. The winning proposal went through further de-

velopment with all participants as developers who primarily worked within three main groups: Anchoring, construction and covering. Parts of the project focused on how to build relationships with existing communities.

Anchoring, construction, covering - constructing 1:1 The format of the final built boathouse measured 14 m in length, 5 m in height and approximately 6 m in width. The design was primarily made up of three main components, each of which constituted its own material. Foundation blocks of concrete anchored the wooden structure to the ground. As partially encircling roof elements we chose white tarpaulin that blocked off the sun heat, kept letting light through and secured a breeze of ventilation passing the inner workspace. In order to attach the tarpaulin to the wooden construction, we chose from a construction and design perspective to use black sailor rope from with regular repetitions forming a pattern on the outside.

Flyndra

’Flyndre’

“Jeg legger meg flat som en flyndre” Petter Stordalen, famous Norwegian flyndre

Our proposal is an attempt at constructing a boathouse that can protect both a vessel and itself — having the ability to convert into a storage unit during the warm summer months. The structure consists of two main elements: A triangular, self-supporting frame that can be multiplied into a custom length, load-bearing wall, and a pitched roof rafter. In addition, outriggers help to stabilize and keep the covering canvas in place. Most of the wooden elements are made up of 100 x 47 mm pine rafters cut in half on the short side — the only exception being the ridge and header boards. This is done both save materials and to lessen the weight, making the individual pieces easier to handle during assembly and transportation. The main joints (marked with circles on the drawings) will be bolts that allow the parts to pivot when they are not fixed in the structure. Thus, each individual frame can be folded flat when not in use, and stored in the small space inside the triangles left standing. Covered with canvas, these remaining frames will help keep the area tidy, protect the materials for reuse, and contribute architecturally to the harbour. Stemjernets
