the station

development | balance icons | spectacle the site map and photos highlight three main issues the project attempts to tackle. firstly, the amenities and services within the university developed in a highly lopsided progression due to the access points established. secondly, as the university grew in size the residences and dormitories began to grow distant from the services intended for its users. lastly, the icons and monuments built both in the university and the science park are somehow hidden from the public spectacle. this project attempts to create both an iconic spectacle projecting the image of the university and weight against the lopsided development of the campus.

PROJECT BRIEF The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the most spaceous school in Hong Kong, with over 9 colleges and 20 dormitories serving the student and teaching body. Combining its strong sense of community with a forward-thinking commitment to better life in campus, the school required a new building that would provide sporting facilities for wellness and recreation, comprising the main sports hall, six squash court area, gym room, multi purpose room, indoor rock climbing facility and administrative offices. Located at the foot of the mountain by the staff residences and C.W. Chu College, the building is able to serve the two main bodies residing in the premises of the university. The building is situated in an elongated flat land with a steep level difference that marks the foot of the mountain leading up to more hostels and living area. The challenge was to mitigate the level difference that steered users away from this site previously and to minimize the building’s apparent size. The response was to create a series of rectangular dimensions that scales to the dimensional needs for the programme to create public pedestrian routes and sit-out areas across the site. The building has a long spanning footprint, providing 4000 square meters of accommodation with essentialy no partitions for maximum visual connection and flexibility of usage. This was achieved by using curving trusses that follow the elevational drop of the level difference to create a long span one way structure, helping the building to recede visually. The curved trusses are also north facing, which permits large areas of the roof to be translucent to admit large amounts of diffuse light for most of the day.

Site Strategy

The five step diagram depicts the step by step process within the design phase that is boiled down to the essence. Taking the context and site into account, and thinking about the connectivity of the topography. The general footprint is taken into consideration along with the volumetric implications of sporting facilities. The form of the building is also beginning to be explored with accounts of the visual mass and interpretation of the program through the form and expression. The massaging of proportions and programmatic distribution is also being actively juggled throughout this design process as well. Graphically chosen in axonometric and clay render since materiality wasn’t of prime concern. Overlaid with vector drawing attempts to convey the process of design and accentuate what is being explored in every drawing.

The diagrammatic sections were the main conceptual drivers for the design. Highlighting the perception of visual mass through three different viewpoints allowed the design to glide through different scales and address the perceptions of visitors, residents, and spectators through the manipulation of a radical form when thinking in terms of a sporting facility. It was chosen to use stark color contrast and minimal detail in terms of drawing to graphically represent the core of an idea. The renderings were chosen from these respective viewpoints in correlation to the concept diagram exploring the visual perception of the building mass from those three perspectives. As you can see from the thumbnail diagrams, they correspond to each view respectively. Showing the process of form-finding and visual perception as an integral part that contributes to the integrated solution proposed by this design.

Cutting sections through sequentially depicts the diversity and connections in the large shed-like structure. The internal experience of the sports center is filled with a variety of spatial experiences and diagonal visual relationships that are established through the elimination of regular grid forms, and structural redundancy is reduced by using tension members to hang floors. Once again, the simplistic conceptual diagrams are used to distill the idea and convey a singular issue at heart. the use of color was chosen to highlight the scale and positioning of people within the building, and the roof-line given the white outine of the truss.

The four internal renderings depict the general atmosphere of the sporting complex, showing the high-tech nature of the project that allows for an expansive feeling of space which isn’t too empty and the ample amounts of natural diffuse sunlight achieved through frosted materials like polycarbonate sheeting and white reflective interior materials. The high-tech building also provides another experience not available in the current state of the instituite, which would be an attractive feature for the building. Also shows that the partition-less structure allows for great flexibility, anticipating shifting needs through different times.

Construction and services were an integral part of the design, and envelope was a great opportunity that was explored in this detail wall section. Having worked with my advisor in figuring out the technical details of exclosure and expression, the truss was exposed and left with another system of sheeting and envelope to waterproof the building.

1:5000 Site Analysis | Urban Nodes the public space of kennedy town could act as nodal gathering points for people of all ages, taking into account the temporal rhythm of usage from different age groups encompassing the fabric of the site. the present state is in poor consideration of the opportunities and fails to seize the unique essence of this fabric.

FINAL PANEL SITE DIAGRAM ANALYSIS Sketch studies and photomontage techniques were used to convey the feelings and atmosphere of the site context. A strong feeling of urban topography is expressed through human manipulation of the landscape, resulting in intricate ground conditions. The diagram below depicts urban nodes around the site in relative proximity against each other. the resulting discovery of the site being almost like a node point between all of the community social points drove the design to be heavily focused on the public aspect. Graphically chosen to be quite sketchy and expressive in color, because of the emphasis of the character of the artifacts in Kennedy Town and the land-to-sea contrast.

Sequential Photo Journey | Richness in the Discontinuity where a nolli plan is sufficient for analysis, hong kong is the antithesis of such methods of representing a site. this sequential diagram takes the audience through a photo journey into the richness of a community sprung from the opportunisitc nature of hong kong development. the covert and almost subliminal nature of the back alley oozes richness in the discontinuity of the urban fabric.

FINAL PANEL PHOTO JOURNEY Further studies on the site in photo-journey format reveals the back alleyway is almost like a hidden gem within the fabric. The plan of the back street comes off as unnoticeable and unremarkable. However, at the site, this back “alleyway� becomes the emotional attachment that continually inspired the design. The richness of community life and extensive usage from local residents is completely shadowed, both figuratively and literally by the residential development atop. Each photo has a keyword attached, giving readers a sense of what the photo is trying to convey.

Isometric Ground Relationship | Reintroducing the Hidden Fabric multi-level spaces open to the public performs various functions for different users at temporal times of the day. the upper stepped level acts as a threshold for the entrance lobby for residents and elevated public space during the day for public users. the sunken courtyard plaza links the hidden community fabric to the urban nodal hub, therefore physically and socially weaving preexisting and old fabric back together to form a more coherent whole.

Plan Diagram | Current vs. Proposed Housing Condition the current housing condition does not encourage residents in taking public ownership of their building. the proposed housing layout takes residents through a meandering experience, generating an increased public ownership of the place.

FINAL PANEL RESIDENTIAL PLAN DIAGRAM A study on the current residential situation of Kennedy town reveals a uniform approach to living. Perhaps the most economical, but definitely not the most ideal for social housing and promotion of human interaction. The slab form introduces another way of approaching the residential block. As opposed to virtually zero chance of using the public lobby in the conventional central core residential block, the proposal elongates the public circulation with nooks and crannies to create moments where the semi-public circulation area becomes a spot for residents of the same level to interact.

The goal of the design is to restitch the hidden community fabric back to the public, so its intended richness could be unveiled. The diagrammatic isometric of the ground-level shows the condition of the design that ties back to the site. The use of steps conforms to the nature of the context, but the play on dimensions allow for other usages for steps to become a social hub for residents and visitors. As shown in the previous photo-journey diagram, the back street already contained rich social life. The lifted up resident block unveils, in an architectural gesture, that there is more to the plot of development than gigantic residential urban artifacts. What was previously sandwiched between titans of housing blocks is now alleivated with the lightness of a hovering slab. The freed up ground level is left for the urban topography to take over, along with the community usage that comes along with it.


Long Perspective | Mutualistic Coexistence depicted above shows the everyday non-sensationalistic use of the public space, yet the public gesture not only doesn’t disturb the residents but also enhances the feeling of community living.

The rendering shows the public and residential life of the design. Taken from “back alleyway” that was originally view-less and detached from its surroundings, the sunken plaza opens up to this back pedestrian walkway. Acting as a communal hub for the residents and visitors, the housing project achieves more than provide a place to live for a couple hundred people. The public gestures of invitation and conforming to the murmurs of the site integrates the housing block into the fabric and enhances the community.

The pleat housing block provides ample amounts of outdoor space for both residents and visitors. It envisions another type of living, celebrating a sustainable livestyle that leverages its richness from its contextual history and cultural background.

FINAL PANEL LONG SECTION LAYOUT WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT The long section graphically expressed in solely linework was chosen be expressed as a sectional perspective to show the fan-like separation of the school zoned programmatically. Each component acts as a break-out type classroom. Advocating the teaching to be flexible and integrative, the layout offers large flexibilty in configuration.

This pavilion is a temporary architectural structure that explores how cardboard weaving techniques and sinuous undulating curved modules work together. This creation is highly expressive and dramatic for the passersby of Fab Fest to enjoy both from a distance and up close. The structure challenges and explores the spatial, tactile, and material possibilities that simple materials can offer by using traditional/conventional weaving techniques in a digital fabrication atmosphere. The pavilion is an experimental structure which is designed from multiple uniform modules and an angled module, which in turn creates a dynamic form due to the continuous undulating sine curve.

The competition was deemed necessary to build a real scale pavilion. It was heavily focused on hands-on approach towards the design. We had to explore options through materiality. The tacile, visual, and spatial experience were explored at scale. We chose a modular approach towards fabrication, which speeds up the process of making and increases the ease of production. In the process, we also used techniques like numbering, positioning, and manual-like instruction sheets to create a smooth production process.

The play of shadows through sinous curves shows through in the photo with cast light. We chose to create panels that had thick frames and infill weave skin to protrude the construction of the pavilion. We wanted to express the modularity through the frames, the tactile expression of weaved cardboard as infill, and an undulating sinous fabric-like whole when constructed together.

The assembly diagram shows our understanding of construction and the materiality’s strength and weaknesses. We bolstered the flabby nature of cardboard with thick frames, and showed off the flexible side of cardboard by weaving the material.

The spatial diagram explores options in our curved wall. We wanted to express a continous curve, much like how a fabric would react in the wind. Our goal was to explore how to express dynamic natures of fabric-like physics and superimpose such ideas onto the idea of a wall, something that is so concrete.

Following our interest in fabric, we also wanted the perception of the pavilion to visually read as something that wraps entirely around. The diagram explains how the pavilion, at eye level visually looks as if it is one serpentine wall that wraps around the area. Yet, as one approaches, they come to realize the possibility of entering the pavilion. Another spatial experience is presented once within the pavilion, likening to an experience of walking in a Richard Serra sculpture.

With the restrain timeline of the competition, we only had time to refine parts of our expression. However if given more time, I would like to explore and refine the expression of construction, the interior experience vs formal perception, and bolster the idea of the wall as a fluid architecture element.
