Another WOMEN OF WEALTH MAGAZINE EDITION about Success, Power, and Wealth. But this is 2023. How do you continue to nurture your mind, body, and soul with daily reminders of a pandemic and disturbing news? You go inward, you simply go inward and perhaps travel to your own peaceful and beautiful space or to a place where the wealthy and prestigious play. But Why you may think? AFTER retiring from 30 years of practicing law, one of the very first things that I did, was set out on a mission to discover the mindset of wealthy people and how others, and myself, could acquire such wealth. I quickly realized that without someone reaching back for me as they “Lift and Climbed” I may have spent many years overcoming pitfalls that would challenge my faith. But God! Our previous special edition. launched in the Hamptons, April 2022, is very dear to my heart. In fact, it rings a melody of gratefulness, tenacity, and resilience.
I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs God’s been good to me, and the downs have been few I would guess you can say, God has blessed me.
For what started out as a lifetime vision of me hosting 20 perhaps 50 women at the Hamptons, soon became an avalanche of 200 plus women from across the country and abroad making history with Women of Wealth Magazine in the most phenomenal way, for never in the history of The Hamptons has this many women and women of color congregated.
As I reflect on my journey with Women of Wealth Magazine, I can tell you that it has not been easy, however, the hunger of feeding the souls of women through the pages of business, beauty and wealthy lifestyles also fed me. Today, I’m full and lifting as I continue to climb to higher heights. Also, in this edition, we want to extend our gratitude and deepest appreciation to the amazing women that made this possible. There are stories from women from all walks of life that understand my vision and heart. Women who like me, look back reach back and
grab another’s hand to Lift them as they Climb. For the first time this year, we’re introducing a list of Titans, wildly influential design-minded women who have made the Women of Wealth Magazine team so proud to introduce them. Women who fiercely stepped out on faith and have become nurturers through their products, nonprofits, and businesses. These courageous ladies are an example of the power of within and I am proud to take the reins of introducing them throughout the pages of this issue. As a famed Editor and Chief of Women of Wealth Magazine a native of Beckley, West Virginia, raised by three teenagers after the death of our dear mother...the landscape of my mind living with eight other siblings was never a beautiful magazine. It was however love, nurturing, and strength, a strong roots that became the sustainable cultivation of my life over time. For the first time this year, I will be unveiling my signature fragrance line LEI ELLE. My love for life and people, for beauty and art, for music and
collaboration, has also been the fuel that fires my advocacy of lifting others today. In this issue, you too will be inspired as we Lift and Climb to higher heights and continue to watch over the landscapes of those that need cultivating as we march forward creating boss Ladies. This weekend our challenge is to create more Boss Ladies.
As I stroll through the pages of the this Edition of Women of Wealth Magazine and gleam with the excitement of the joy that you too will experience, my heart is reminded of these words from a beautiful song that James Cleveland sang on an Unknown Album. “I’ve had my share of life’s
ups and downs God’s been good to me, and the downs have been few, I would guess you can say, God has blessed me. But there’s never been a time in my life, he didn’t bring me through.” If anyone should ever write, my life story. For whatever reason there might be. He will be there, between each line of pain and glory. Jesus is the best thing that ever happened to me.

MY LIFE STORY.
Janet Tonkins
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO REAL ESTATE MAVEN
When one thinks of successful real estate entrepreneurs, Janet Tonkins, the self-proclaimed “cash flow diva,” is a name that stands out. And yes “she buys houses like women buy shoes.”
Despite her humble beginnings, she is built an empire with over one hundred properties, and has successfully bought, sold, rehabbed, and managed over $700 million in single-family houses and multi-unit apartment buildings in NJ, MD, and GA with family and business partners.
She is an Executive Board Member of the Baltimore Real Estate Investment Association, chairperson, and coordinator of the SAVVY Women’s Investment Meeting, and a member of the Baltimore City HABC Advisory Board. Her story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of financial literacy and education
She is also an author, speaker, mentor, coach, lender, and philanthropist, dedicated to uplifting and empowering young men and women in the real estate industry. She teaches classes on financial literacy and “Building a Rental Property Empire.” She serves as an Executive Board Member of the Baltimore Real Estate Investment Association and Co-chairs the SAVVY Women’s Investment Meeting.
A Story Rooted in Determination and Hard Work
Janet Tonkins’ journey into real estate is rooted in her early life experiences. Growing up in the Christopher Columbus Projects (CCP) in Paterson, New Jersey. Janet was no stranger to hardship. “I suffered from extremely low self-esteem and grew up in poverty in the CCP projects building four, apt 15-C where crime, drug abuse, and violence were the norm. We had to take the stairs to bring groceries and laundry up dark hallways because the elevators were often broken. I got stuck on the elevators between floors and was rescued by the fire department more often than I care to remember. During one of those episodes, I almost got raped.
My parents lived from paycheck to paycheck, were always running from creditors and never owned anything. They did not have financial literacy knowledge so they could not teach us about setting goals, saving, and investing, and I resented them immensely for my low aim, lack of direction and inability to dream Big. We tend to repeat what our parents did, and I have seen generations living in the projects. I vowed I would not repeat the same.
Janet started working at the age of thirteen at Gino’s Fried Chicken (now Kentucky Fried Chicken) and New Jersey Bell as a telephone operator, at the age of sixteen where she did 35 years. Janet saved diligently,
My parents never owned anything and lived from paycheck to paycheck
and vividly recalls attempting to buy her first car, a 1973 white Cougar. However, her parents’ poor credit prevented them from co-signing a loan for her, teaching her an invaluable lesson about financial independence. She eventually got a friend with good credit to co-sign for her. Despite these challenges, her determination to rise above her circumstances never wavered.
Education as a Pathway to Success
Determined not to let her background define her future, Janet immersed herself in financial education. She voraciously read Forbes, Inc., and Money magazines, learning that wealth was built through owning assets. Inspired by Andrew Carnegie’s assertion that 90% of millionaires gain their wealth through real estate, she embarked on a journey that would transform her life.
“She explains. “I was determined that their financial struggles would not be my destination.” This resolve drove her to not only educate herself but also to educate others in her community.
Breaking Barriers and Building Wealth
Janet’s first foray into real estate began in 1987 with the purchase of a three-unit property for 90K and 9 per cent interest in Paterson, NJ. They refinanced and cashed out five times (tax-free money) and sold the property in 2005
for $415,000.00 “We lived in one unit and leased the other two units she shares. Today this is called “house hacking” and an excellent strategy that she teaches to real estate investors to take advantage of FHA, VA, USDA, and First Time Home Loan programs.
This investment laid the foundation for her expansive real estate portfolio, which now includes over one hundred properties across New Jersey, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Atlanta. She and her husband of 44 years were developers and partners in the Baltimore Eastside Redevelopment (Johns Hopkins Hospital area) along with Forest City Development Company (and several other minority partners) where they were part owners of three $110 million dollar biotech labs, a 150-unit apartment building, a parking garage, and completed the sale of 79 newly built luxury townhomes in the Hopkins area in partnership with Ryan Homes.
Her favorite color is Red and “Transforming properties into profitable investments is her passion and can be seen on the red doors of her single-family properties. Just like the perfect pair of red heels, each property she adds to her collection is a statement piece of success.
Renowned for excellence in product and service, her creativity in fashion and personal shopping extends to properties. Her Mantra “I don’t give anyone anything I can’t live in myself” has earned her the title of Baltimore’s point of reference for rental properties and re fl ects her dedication to quality and integrity in every aspect of her work.
She is most proud of their groundbreaking 74unit apartment building in Paterson, NJ, aimed at supporting grandparents raising grandchildren with a mental health component. The First African Americans to build from the ground up in her hometown.” As a partner in this endeavor, my husband, baby brother and I have played a signi fi cant role in revitalizing the community, creating jobs, and providing affordable housing options. We know this will have a lasting impact on the economic and social fabric of the community, and I am proud to have been a part of it. As a result of that venture, The City of Newark, NJ has asked us to duplicate that project. They have also completed negotiations for sixty units dedicated to Homeless Veterans in Paterson.”
Empowering Others Through Education
Janet’s in fl uence extends beyond her local community. She has spoken on many podcasts, including: The Real Estate Investing Club with Gabe Petersen, Pretty Girls Love Real Estate, and Empower HER Money with Angela Duncan. She was also featured on Realty-Trac, USA Today as a Game Changer, and The Voices of Change inaugural magazine Juneteenth issue.
Janet competed with Venus and Serena Williams and Shonda Rhimes for Success Magazine’s Woman of the year and received the 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Dr. Cheryl Wood.
She has Co-authored several best-selling books-The Turning Point with Jack Can fi eld, Resilience with Dr. Cheryl Woods, and the “J” Word with Dr. Renee Allen. Her Solo debut “Purses, Heels, Houses,” You Choose is scheduled for the end of 2024.
“Janet’s mission extends beyond personal success. she is committed to empowering others, particularly women and minorities, through education. “You cannot save your way to wealth; you must invest your way to wealth,” she emphasizes.
She teaches financial literacy to children as young as five, emphasizing the importance of investing from an early age. “We taught our son at age 13 how to invest in stocks via dollar cost averaging,” she notes, highlighting her family’s commitment to financial education and we still invest in stocks, mortgage notes, funds, and alternatives to Real Estate.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
Balancing her career with her personal life has been a team effort. Janet credits her husband, business partner, and best friend of 44 years, for their shared success. “He was Mr. Mom, taking care of our children while I focused on my career,” she says. Their partnership, based on love and mutual respect, has been the cornerstone of their business and family life.
He has always been extremely supportive of me, and I thank God for him! I am profoundly grateful and blessed! This enabled me to retire from Verizon at the age of fifty and ramp up our real estate game as we entered the business full time.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Janets’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is clear: education, passion, and perseverance are key. “This is not for the faint of heart,” she warns. “Education is crucial, and you must invest in yourself.” Success is not a secret; it is a system! She encourages following proven strategies and seeking mentorship from those genuinely succeeding in the field. You want to conduct your due
diligence to ensure as my girlfriend Gloria Mayfield Banks says You want to “Copy the Right Cat” This is not a get rich quick game. Just Like a baby you have birthed: You Crawl, Walk and Run. You absolutely can gain wealth, but you can also lose a lot of money!
She advises prioritizing investments over material luxuries, using assets to generate wealth that can fund personal desires.
Looking Ahead
As Janet approaches her 69th birthday, she shows no signs of slowing down. Her future plans include creating a Kiddie Academy to teach financial literacy and real estate to young children. Teaching young women how to close the wealth gap and prioritize saving and investing over buying luxury items, and clothing. Becoming producers and not just consumers.
Passing the Torch Is so especially important to me! I want my work to have a lasting impact on future generations by inspiring them to dream big, work hard, and never give up on their goals. I want to leave a legacy of empowerment, resilience, and service to others—a legacy that motivates and empowers individuals to become agents of positive change in their own lives and the lives of their communities.
Her journey has truly been one of from “poverty to wealth” “from rags to riches” not just in fi nances, but in all areas of her life. Janet credits Christ as her CEO, for allowing her to become the COO of her life. She has altered the course of her family’s destiny as well as the lives of many young men and women.” A teacher at heart, her mission in life is not only to inspire and motivate African American girls, boys, men, and women all over the globe, but to teach them how to do it! “Give a man a fi sh and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fi sh and you feed him for a lifetime”! She honestly believes that She has been blessed to be a blessing to others, and to “whom much is given, much is required.”
“Let my Living be not in Vain!
Janet Tonkins’ story is one of perseverance, faith, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Her journey from the projects to a real estate mogul serves as an inspiration, proving that with determination, education, and a dedicated support system, anything is possible. You can reach her at
Tracie Trotter
THE POWER OF OWNERSHIP
Over the past 30 years, the computer systems world has grown, and this dynamic woman has changed and grown with it. Tracie Trotter has leveraged her military background, vast education and degrees from multiple universities and experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Project Management and Business, coupled with her viewpoints and awareness of technology and the growing needs of her customer base to create a successful IT Consulting firm with her husband who has a Business Information Systems degree. Their company specializes in ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software upgrades, implementation, development, and support.
Prior to creating Trotter Consulting, Inc., they lived a vastly different life. Tracie and her husband worked together at a fortune 50 company. He held positions as a computer programmer, analyst, and technical advisor. While Tracie held positions as a business analyst, technical advisor, and international project manager. As their family continued to grow and decided that she would become a stay-at-home mom, her husband would apply for other positions that would afford an increase in salary. However, as qualified as he was, he would be overlooked for many internal positions. Although it was a foreign concept to them both, Tracie would periodically suggest they should start their own company, but it was something he was uninterested in pursuing. And if she is being honest, Tracie is sure there was some underlining fear in making that move with a big family and the unknown.
You can have all the money in the world, but if you’re not healthy, there’s not much you can do to enjoy it.
Her husband eventually decided to accept a position in the IT contracting and consulting arena. He worked there for several years but traveled every week, which was not ideal for their family dynamics. Again, she would suggest that they start their own company. The answer was the same. But eventually, the inevitable happened. The contract he was working on ended and it was time to search for another opportunity. However, during his search, he was told that he was either overqualified or that the position would be a short-term contract. None of which was ideal for their family structure. She asked again, “do you think we should explore starting our own company”? And again, his answer remained the same. But finally, the day came where he conceded and agreed to create a business. They created an EIN, chose a business structure, and opened a business account. The day after, he placed his resume online and immediately secured their first independent contract. Tracie tells people all the time… she is a strong believer that sometimes God may allow what we might perceive as terrible things to happen to move us to the next level…when a window closes, a door opens. Although it was a scary door to walk through and a huge learning curve, they were equipped for success, and have not looked back. They believe that starting their own business was the best decision they could have ever made. They thank the Lord that the business has successfully grown as they continue to help other companies meet their business goals.
WOW – Arkeah Jacobs: Why technology?
I had foresight at an early age. I asked myself, what will the world need in the future? How had the world changed since I was a kid? The answer… technology. For example, I started to become proficient at typing on a typewriter the summer of my freshman year of high school but by the time I was a junior, the school offered a word processing class, and before you knew it, the typewriter was obsolete. As a National Merit Scholar and receiving a full academic scholarship to my first alma mater, Florida A&M University, deciding on a technology major was easy. Being the first person in my
family to attend university, I wanted to select a major that would be meaningful, fruitful, long lasting, have room for growth, and afford a great future. I decided to explore Computer Information Systems and Business.
So, how did you turn this into a consulting business with your husband? And why was it important for you to teach your six children to take on the family business?
We turned our Information Systems degrees into a consulting business by confidently using our extensive experience, training, and education as well as our desire to create and grow a successful family business. Our desire to create our own legacy stemmed from working for the success of other companies who would not or did not desire to promote us in order to continue to utilize our knowledge, gifts, and talents for their own advancement and growth.
My husband and I were exemplary award-winning employees who were very effective and great at our jobs. We successfully worked for the federal government and some of the most successful fortune 50 companies in the world by providing valuable input and advising on next steps to help those companies increase their bottom lines. We engaged in projects such as cutting edged technology to navigate a company-wide conversion from a mainframe base to a more modern architecture with the introduction of Project Management.
And after seeing and experiencing the power of Information Systems and every business aspect it touched, we encouraged our children to major in information technology as well. Four of our six children graduated high school early, two graduated early with Associate degrees even before graduating high school, and all with honors. Each child has studied or will be studying to receive degrees in Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Business Information Systems, and Nuclear Engineering. All information systems and technology degrees that will propel our family business, Trotter Consulting, Inc., to new levels, giving them a sense of pride, and ownership.
What has been your greatest obstacle to overcome?
Fear of the unknown and change of mindset. Once we began to expand our business, there were challenges in modifying the mindset on reporting to a “boss” and being your own boss. I remember informing our client that we would have to continue the project from a remote location after receiving another contract. He boldly told me that he was not going to “allow” us to work for another company while working on his project.
I explained to him that we do not work for him but partner with him to assist in helping him meet and exceed his IT and business goals. I was happy to offer him three alternatives. 1) He could consider today our last day working together, 2) our company could work remotely for 2 weeks to provide him an opportunity to find someone who might be able to meet the level of excellence that we had afforded him, or 3) we could continue our working relationship remotely and provide him the same level of service and success we had afforded him for the past year and further explained that if he found himself to be unhappy with our performance, I would be happy to revisit the conversation. Not change my mind but revisit the conversation. Of course, he chose the latter and has been a loyal client for the past 10 years. Be great at what you do, know your worth and be confident in it!
Well, that is a very impressive story about being your own boss and bringing your client around to your way of thinking. With that being said, what services does your business now offer?
We provide IT consulting, design, development, support, and solutions for ERP (enterprise resource planning) software. ERP is a software system that assists in the
management of business operations across multiple business sectors. Supporting automation and processes of finance, HR (human resources), payroll, manufacturing, supply chain management (SCM), procurement, and other business-related areas.
As a woman of wealth, what does wealth represent or mean to you?
Wealth can be so many things. I think for me, it means having sustainable assets that you can use to create generational wealth. I also believe wealth is the ability to help people when you can, to travel, live where you want, and do what you want in life without financial limitations. However, even before the money, my wealth included family, friends, health, and happiness. You can have all the money in the world, but if you’re not happy, or don’t have good health or family or friends to share or enjoy it with, then money could be meaningless.
What is next for your business and your family?
Trotter Consulting, Inc. continues to provide mentorship to new small businesses and serve our community by volunteering and giving back. The next big business move is to semi-retire and enjoy the fruits of our labor. But until then, we are working on expanding the business through international travel, ensuring that we remain abreast of the newest technology, partnering with other IT sectors such as AI and continuing business and technical education. In order to ensure that our children are prepared to inherit all that we leave behind, we are teaching them to be business savvy. Our two younger sons are now at university and exploring fascinating technology and international internships. All of our efforts remain directed at fostering the Power of Ownership.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.
(Romans 8:28/NIV)
Jessica Davis
CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE
Jessica Davis doesn’t just think she’s been called according to God’s divine purpose. She’s fully persuaded she’s been strategically called. To her credit, she’s gone from thinking to knowing. Consider, for instance, the immeasurable brilliant strides Davis has made throughout the years in the ever-evolving world of entrepreneurship. From Texas to Delaware, Davis has become an esteemed beacon of light of her chosen profession, most notably as the CEO of Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation, Inc. Her Newark, Delaware-based featured business endeavor that, much to her delight, continues to have a monumental impact in the spiritual and natural realms.
Davis, 55, emphasized, among things, her fervent rise to entrepreneurial prosperity has evolved in large because of the immeasurable impact of her spiritual parents: spiritual parents Pastor Warren and Cynthia McKnight of Love Kingdom Fellowship Church in New Jersey. “I have a passion to help people,” Davis, a native Texan, said of the sustained success she’s acquired since delving into the entrepreneurial sector. “I love to serve. I love people.” That is abundantly evident, given Davis’ keen professional, coupled with what could be appropriately described as her unyielding love for serving people from various walks of life.
Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation is headquartered at 262 Chapman Road, Suite 221 in Newark, N.J. Suitably known as the “Blessed Boss,” Davis, since her business inception, has led Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation, a fixture for operating primarily as a student transportation shuttle. A venture that went into full operation in Summer 2015 in Texas, fondly called the Lone Star State. Happy Hands &
Feet Kidz Transportation (formerly Happy Hands & Feet Transportation) is geared largely towards providing safe transportation services for children at a reasonably affordable rate. A distinctly unique business that is nearing its ninth year of existence, Davis acknowledged that Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation is extremely ideal, considering it allows her some keen flexibility, particularly as it relates to attending church regularly and spending quality time with family.
So what exactly empowers the “Bless Boss” to steadfastly become a better version of herself while overseeing the day-to-day operations of a flourishing business-turnedministry, one that has gained a reputation for helping to advance the kingdom?
“My diligence and resources to be my own boss and trusting God,” said Davis, explaining how her life’s competitive nature has greatly helped propel her forward to entrepreneurial success. Interestingly enough, Davis acknowledged what separates her business from those similar to it is that Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation provides door-to-door student transportation, all the while letting its light shine in the process. “We are passionate about giving back
to our community and spreading love and care,” said Davis, who also has become a fixture in the Human Resources industry as a payroll professional. “We partner with local schools and organizations to provide transportation service for underserved youth, sponsoring community events, and supporting initiatives that promote education and youth development.”
Besides her beloved spiritual parents and church family, Davis said her 12 grandchildren and children who engaged in lengthy walks to and from school are what fueled her drive to start a rising transportation shuttle business. “(My business) allows me more time to do the things of God,” said Davis. “And I love students and I love to see them smile.” More than anything, assuming the mind of Christ and being a godly example have proven to be a massive game-changer for a transportation shuttle company whose best and brightest days are well ahead of it.
“Anything and everything I have belongs to God,” Davis says without hesitation. “I stand on Roman 28:8: And we know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” I love people and I have the ability to touch children’s lives, especially as they commute to school.” Appropriately and eloquently uttered by this esteemed Christ-centered entrepreneur who’s prominently known as the “Blessed Boss.” For more information about Newark, Delaware Businesswoman Jessica Davis of Happy Hands & Feet Kidz Transportation, call 302897-2375. Dr. Tanya O.
Jones
A WARRIOR OF TRAUMA TURNED ADVOCATE FOR HEALING
In a recent interview with Women of Wealth Magazine, Tanya Jones, founder & CEO of Interactive Advocacy, shared her remarkable journey from trauma survivor to advocate, highlighting the transformative power of storytelling a creative expression in healing.
Jones, a survivor of childhood and adult trauma, spoke candidly about her experiences and how they led her to where she is today. Growing up in an environment where discussing trauma was taboo, Jones found solace in writing. Her journals became a safe haven where she could process her experiences and envision a victorious future. This creative outlet eventually led her to write her own play, No Words, based on her sexual assault experience, which has since become a global sensation.
“When people enter the world of advocacy, they do it because they feel like they have been called to it. It is either because someone they know has been personally impacted by things, whether it is violence, disease, or just loss,” Jones explains.
We did not have access to therapy like we do now.
“For me, I am a thriving survivor, a warrior of childhood and adult trauma. I did not realize at the time that I was experiencing trauma. I knew that the things that were happening to me as a child were wrong. I did not know what to call it. I just knew that I needed to find a way to no longer be in those situations and to protect those individuals around me.”
As a young person enduring childhood trauma, I realized that my voice was stifled - I felt voiceless. The only thing I could do was protect my younger siblings. To shield them, I isolated myself from the world, creating a barrier around us. I became hyper-focused on forming a protective ring around my brothers and sisters, In my young mind keeping predators at bay. This ring was my defense mechanism, safeguarding not only them but also myself. It’s why I eventually came to see myself as the “brown girl in the ring” - the ring was my means of ultimate protection.
On her website, the colors of her logo are all meaningful: teal represents sexual assault, yellow represents suicide, green represents mental health, and purple represents domestic violence. Jones is a survivor of them all and emphasizes the importance of recognizing behavioral signs of trauma, particularly in young people. “Many victims suffer in silence.”
She explains that lashing out, becoming rebellious, fighting, cursing, isolation, body mutilation, giving away personal items, and drastic mood changes are all signs that can indicate deeper issues that require compassionate intervention. She remembers how her family made jokes about her change in behavior at family reunions, but they never asked her the deeper, tough questions. She urges adults to create safe spaces for open dialogue, encouraging communication over punishment and criticism.
“When I started to lash out, no one wanted to ask questions. They knew the answers, but they were afraid to ask,” Jones recalled. “The signs are always there. We show them the best way that we know how.”
Jones had this to say about overcoming her obstacles: “I tell people that I am a person that is constantly under construction. Why? Because of trauma. It is one of those things where you wear this scar and people cannot see it. People see you smiling, they see you laughing, they see you in the wonderful space, and you are giving so much to so many, but they do not realize that you too have scars. There are things that even with all the work that I am doing today, I still have triggers. There are certain conversations, certain people, certain smells, certain spaces that I refuse to allow myself to be in because I know they are triggering for me. Today, I celebrate my ability to respect the boundaries that I have set in place for myself, and I work with others to remind them why boundaries are so important, even at an incredibly early age.”
When asked about going to therapy, Jones explains her experience of being from a family of an older generation.
“We did not have access to therapy like we do now. We did not even know it was a thing, that it was possible or available to us. And to be quite honest, growing up in a family from Panama, they just, for whatever reason, kept so many secrets. They did not talk about what was going on. It was one of those things where whatever was going on inside the house, we did not discuss it, and we did not tell anyone outside the house.”
After taking a deep pause, Jones explains how she overcame the lack of access to therapy to still triumph. “Trauma led me to isolation, but that isolation led me to create. I have been a writer for many years, keeping journals like it was therapy. I chose to lose myself in my words, where I could create an alternate reality; where I could see myself victorious over those that decided to touch places of my body they had no business touching. I could imagine myself prevailing over these people and feeling victorious and powerful. I would use my writing as my tool to escape.”
“Slowly that writing would turn into short stories, affirmations, would turn into poetry,” she continues. “All of that led to my journey to healing. Today I am a published author. I am a playwright—I am a writer of stories. It led me on my 25-year journey of doing this work and pouring into everyone else, working in the fields from client’s compliance to equal employment opportunity to sexual assault prevention.”
“I was busy pouring into someone else, but I missed that. I was pouring into everyone else, but I had not gotten to the crux of my own personal trauma. It was not enough that I would just write. I needed to be able to tell my story aloud. Today, I have a platform where I allow myself to be unapologetically creative and free as I share storytelling of lived experiences. The first play I ever wrote was my own sexual assault experience.”
“So writing was my escape. It was my therapy. It still is today. Having a creative voice and being a creative is one of the biggest things I tapped into and why I am such a huge proponent of creative expression to release trauma and cultivate inner peace.”
Through the violence prevention training organization, Interactive Advocacy, Jones uses her platform to educate and empower others through theater, film, and creative expression. “What we do is travel all over the globe doing live stage performances of storytelling through lived experiences, as well as scripted. So, we use this forum to connect with our audiences and what I like to call, putting them in the hot seat; allow them to experience the harm firsthand so that together we can work on the care. And what we do also is direct individuals to organizations that can support their need or their effort on their journey of resiliency.”
When asked about the topic of wealth, Jones had this to say: “Wealth is freedom, but when I say freedom, I am not associating a monetary value on that level of freedom. Even though money is associated with wealth, there are also other
riches: rich in mind, rich in body, rich in spirituality, rich in faith, rich in the ability to give and elevate people, you know, rich in kindness.”
“So being a woman of wealth is so empowering and being recognized as a person that is wealthy with riches that can give so much with, so little is powerful. And it is something I embrace because it has a lot more to do for me—selflessness, humility, and kindness, and just being able to have a positive level of impact on one person. I look at wealth as something we should be collaborating on and not competing for. There is so much we can do together as people of color, as women of color. There is so much we can do together to be wealthy. If we could collaborate on all these things, the money will come.”
As the newly elected President of the North Carolina Veterans Business Association and a veteran herself, Jones
continues to break barriers, becoming the first woman of color to hold the position. Her dedication to supporting entrepreneurs, particularly veterans and their spouses, reflects her commitment to serving those who have served their country.
In closing, Jones reminds readers that trauma scars are often invisible, and it is crucial to check in on loved ones and offer support. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community in overcoming adversity.
Jones’s journey from trauma survivor to advocate exemplifies the transformative power of storytelling and serves as an inspiration to all. Through her work, she continues to uplift and empower others, proving that healing is possible, and a brighter future is within reach. For further discussion. A COMMITMENT TO PERSONAL GROWTH
In our fast-paced world, we often find ourselves caught in a cycle of relentless work, striving to reach our goals and fulfill our financial responsibilities. The true essence of hard work lies not only in the dedication we pour into our professional lives, but also in the commitment we make to personal growth and becoming the best versions of ourselves. It involves continuous learning, recognizing that life is a canvas we shape and mold, not just something that happens to us. We are presented with countless paths to choose from, each shaping our individual journeys driven by a desire for more in life, a yearning for opportunities to inspire positive change, and uplift those around us.
From a young age, I have always been the one to defy limitations and embrace empowerment. Growing up with ambitious, welleducated parents provided me with a solid foundation and a deep connection to my inner growth. My vision is to use my voice to assist and make a meaningful, lasting difference in the lives of others. I aim to connect with those I work with and focus on supporting them on their personal journey by sharing their narratives and overcoming their obstacles. It’s not about me; it’s about the people I touch and empower to thrive.
My journey is about inspiring and making a difference, empowering individuals to embrace

Despite my aspirations to attend law school, circumstances led me down a different path in fashion and marketing in the early 1990s. Along the way, I faced challenges and setbacks, like being told I couldn’t do runway because of my height. However, I persevered and found myself on the runway stage and in high fashion opportunities, learning humility, resilience, and the importance of collaboration. Over the past two decades, my focus has been on business development and consulting work. I eventually went back to law school, expanding my knowledge in various areas of law. My journey has been a mix of challenges and accomplishments, all contributing to my growth and understanding of people both personally and professionally.
Exploring my diverse lineage with European roots has been a journey of self-discovery, learning about the stories of my ancestors who defied the odds. I believe in uplifting one another and celebrating our unique beauty, which comes from within. It’s important to encourage others to see beyond their doubts and limitations, helping them realize their full potential. True achievement is about self-awareness and growth. By pushing ourselves to reach our dreams and goals, we uncover our true capabilities. I am grateful for the setbacks, challenges, and negativity that have crossed my path, as they have shaped me into the person I am today. My journey is about inspiring and making a difference, empowering individuals to embrace their self-worth and reach their full potential.

Cynthia Decker MAHLON: A NAME THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME.
Mahlon is a name that I hold dear and it is filled with so much meaning. Mahlon is actually the name of my son that passed back in 2017 in a car accident at 15 years old. He was one of my biggest fans and always encouraged me and helped me with my designs when I needed a model. He was my light! I wanted him to live on, so that is how Maxie Mahlon was born.
I have always wanted to design even when I was little. Growing up as an only child I spent a lot of time alone or with my two grandmothers. I would go up in my Nana’s attic and find her old clothes from the 50’s and fabric. I would spend hours creating new designs. My grand mommy taught me how to sew. She was extremely talented and I would love to be with her. Quilting, painting and those trips to Hancock fabrics were some of my earliest and best memories.
I finished fashion school in London and traveled. I’ve spent most of my life bra fitting and helping women find a healthy fitting bra owning an internationally known lingerie store in Georgia. I was on TV on a show called Double Divas and 90 day fiancé, Pillow Talk. I have done so many wonderful things in my life, but at 53 years old, I am finally able to be a fashion designer and fulfill my dream and passion.
I am a bit eclectic and having traveled and inspired by the 70s era I created Maxie Mahlon. I am very bold, but at the same time I love vintage. There’s nothing better than a great fitting wrap dress as it looks fabulous on every figure! I am also into very wide legged pants. I have always designed robes and gowns being in the lingerie business but lately I have started designing daywear. I am absolutely in love with the maxi man line that I have started to create. The jacket I like to call Indie Asian as it has an oriental European flare with a hint of 70s
John Travolta style. This jacket is unisex. I love bold prints, and mixing patterns. The style that I am working to achieve with Maxie Mahlon is for really any age, but it’s flare for the 50 and up woman. For me, it’s very hard to go into a store these days and just buy a shirt. Everything seems to be cropped and I’m left looking for the rest of the shirt! Everybody seems to be into neutral these days, and I’m bored with that! I want to make something that looks high fashion, but is wearable not just on a runway. When you wear Maxie Mahlon, you should feel like you stand out without being too much, but just enough that people want to know about you. They want to know where you got your outfit.
I am starting my line with the maxi wrap, which is a stretchy, comfortable non-wrinkling dress. It’s great for travel as you can ball it up in a bag, take it out and wear it. The maxi wrap is the universal dress in sizes S-2XL. You can wear it to work out in the town or just a day shopping. You could even wear it as a bathing suit cover up as it’s easy to get in and out.
I am expecting my first grandchild in June. My daughter-inlaw wanted to do a pregnancy photo shoot so I decided to take Maxie Mahlon to a different level and have created a version of the maxi wrap in beautiful floral lace to make anyone who wears it feel gorgeous! You don’t have to be pregnant to wear it as it looks good over a body con dress for any special occasion including bridal.
I hope that one day I will be able to start my non profit Brest Frends. I want to help raise money to help teens that cannot afford bras. I want to educate on body positivity and provide a healthy fit. Breast cancer has been on the rise and I believe that prevention leads to cure.

Stephanie V. Harvey
A WOMAN PERFECTLY DESIGNED BY GOD
Women Of Wealth Magazine caught up with this General Contractor, Self-Development Life Style Designer, Classical Singer and so much more while she was taking a muchneeded rest on a 21-day cruise around the world. We call her Ms. Stephanie V, a woman who put the “C” in class. Her story should be a movie series, it is that compelling. The acronyms Beauty and Intellect does not adequately do her justice. She is one of the smartest women we have interviewed in a long while. Her compelling story is so long, we were not able to give it the time that it needed. Look for the book and movie soon. The choice pieces of her story are presented in this interview below; however, you will need to keep watch for the rest of the story that is being written as we place this Cover on display. She is the classy, phenomenon woman of today.
If you have a dream don’t be a hobbyist, be an entrepreneur!
WOW: “NEW BEGINNING BY DESIGN” What powerful words I thought, tell us Ms. Stephanie V. what is the significance of these words and how do they relate to you as a general contractor?
Ms. Stephanie V: The words, New Beginning by Design has such a powerful meaning for me. Throughout my years as an interior designer who transitioned into a state licensed general contractor, I was able to see the comparison between building your external home and your internal home within you. During my time as a celebrity interior designer, I noticed there were clients who were always happy with their project, who were usually people with purpose inside of themselves vs. people who would change things repeatedly and never know why.
Over time I saw a correlation between a person’s internal home and external home and realized there really wasn’t much difference in the processes I used in building an architectural structural home and the internal structure within us. In 2003 I went through a very devastating life displacement called divorce which brought me from a 13,000 plus square foot mansion to sleeping on the floor in a house with no heat for months. But I thank God today for the floor because it was the floor that brought me to writing my New Beginning By Design
series, teaching people to redesign their lives with the same processes and principles I use to redesign, remodel, and rebuild their homes.
WOW: General Contractor, Author, Public Speaker, and Transformation Specialist, to name a few. So please tell us how your professional lifestyle became so diverse and why.
Ms. Stephanie V: For 25 years I was a celebrity interior designer, designing interior spaces for NFL ballplayers, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Falcons, and other teams. Having an interest in interior design was a natural since I was skilled in all areas of fine arts from playing piano, singing, and fashion. While designing interiors for celebrity clientele, I was asked to design interiors for oceanfront mansions in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, which was the beginning of a wonderful ten-year adventure. Eventually I would oversee renovations which led me to becoming a residential / light commercial state licensed general contractor in 2006. The devastation that took place during my divorce was an exceedingly difficult turning point in my life, but it was a part of my journey. Had I not followed the winding road, I would never have been in a position for my spiritual rebirth and purposeful life as a Transformation Specialist and Author.
WOW: Who or what has been the greatest inspiration in your life?
Ms. Stephanie V: My deceased husband Donald E. Harvey has been the greatest inspiration in my lifetime.
I know my husband was my gift on earth sent by God because this man fed life into me every day. He was amazing. I’ve always been that girl who had dreams. And I’ve always been that person that never let anyone tarnish my dreams. I purchased an acre lot in the multi-million-dollar gated community Echelon country club in Milton, Georgia One Sunday, Donald and I went on an afternoon drive, and showed him my dream lot overlooking a scenery of luxury, Donald asked my plans for the lot. I told my husband because of the challenges of the old ways of the south, I sought to be the first
Black female or woman of color to build in a mega mansion debt free in a multi-million-dollar gated community on the north side of town.
He smiled and asked, “Well, what changed your mind?” I said, “The challenges and the burn out of going up against the obstacles alone. Do not allow someone who is not worthy nor possess your tenacity, thinking, or entrepreneurship rob a dream that was destined for Stephanie V.?” Donald took me to dinner one evening presented me with six red roses and asked me to read the card, which said “you purchased lot #6 because God knew we would meet, and I would make your dream a reality. You are now in the luxury construction business. We started strategically planning and Harvey Residential Home Builders was established.
Donald lost his battle with cancer on September 13, 2022, and never got to start our dream, but I picked up the torch in his honor and I am on schedule to break ground spring 2025 in his honor.
WOW: And the last question. As a woman of wealth and great wisdom, is there any last advice or tidbits of wisdom that you would give any woman out there that’s looking to, change careers or just get started and don’t know how to do it? Any words of confidence that you would like to leave them?
Ms. Stephanie V: If you have a dream Don’t be a hobbyist, Be an entrepreneur! Don’t let anybody feed you labels based on age, gender, or color. Be the person you’re supposed to be and claim the destiny you’re supposed to have. Remember, when you were born God didn’t give your life plan to anybody but you, which means nobody can give you directions for your destination. Consequently, when people tell you you’re too old,
remember success has no age limit. That wasn’t their destiny. People don’t realize the famous chef Julia Child secured her first television deal at the age of fifty-one, but didn’t make her fortune till after she was 60. Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken didn’t franchise till after he was in his 60s. Now, what if they had stopped because someone said, at this age, why do you want to do this? So, to gain wealth, you must keep your mind open, dream big, implement, and realize that your destiny only belongs to you. Remember you should always evolve and have a new beginning that you customize for your happiness and success.
WOW: We cannot thank this formidable lady enough for sharing just pieces of her story series with us. If you want more information on Ms. Stephanie V. Harvey reach out to her at iamstephaniev.com
Be in this world, but not of this world.
Dr Yugandrie Maharaj AMBASSADOR OF AFRICAN ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
“And then a hero comes along; with the strength to carry on. And you cast your fears aside, and you know you can survive. So, when you feel like hope is gone, look inside you and be strong. And you’ll finally see the truth, that a hero lies in you.” – Mariah Carey, American singer and songwriter
The world is in dire need of superheroes who will ensure remarkable transformational shifts in their own lives and in the lives of others. At no time in the eventful history of mankind has there been so many opportunities for advancement on the individual and collective levels. In an age in which first class performance is in fervent demand, there can be no excuse for anything less. For that reason, the hero in each one of us must advocate strongly for the pursuit of the heroic transformational change that will liberate humanity from the shackles of ignorance and mediocrity. This is my story.
Humble Beginnings
My quest to discover my own inner superhero commenced with my difficult upbringing. I was the eldest in a family of three children who were raised by a simple, humble woman in the tense atmosphere created by an alcoholic father. My family had to endure despairing and dispiriting grinding poverty occasioned by unemployment, unimaginable domestic abuse, personal health issues, and the rather incapacitating social limitations placed on my parents by the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation characterized by an authoritarian political culture that ensured that South Africa was dominated through a systematic and institutional form of minority rule.
I rather precociously, at the age of thirteen, decided to become a feisty participant and activist in the anti-apartheid struggle.
With the wisdom of insight, I am now in a better position to appreciate the enormous risk I took at such a tender age, to wear the toga of a human rights activist, and join in the fight against the cruel and unjust apartheid system. I was so committed to my purpose of fighting for the political and economic freedom of my people that I ended up sacrificing the sweet innocence of youth hastening my evolution into adulthood.
Embarking on The Road of Life
The road of life can be long and arduous. I arrived at the wisdom that, while I could never totally master life, I could, at the very least, learn to love life to perfection. I resolved to find the love that was embedded within me and quickly discovered that the only way to achieve this seemingly Herculean feat was to hearken to the words in one of the most beautiful prayers ever offered by the Son of Man, in which He alluded to the eternally relevant phrase, “Be in this world, but not of this world.”
With my Creator’s glory beaming its grace upon me, I completed my legal studies, graduating with a law degree. However, even before I became an attorney, I was appointed into a position as one of three provincial managers to run the first cycle of historic elections in South Africa. The election
took place under the direction of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the institution responsible for running and administering free and fair elections.
I worked closely with leaders of different political parties, and I can declare, with all the pride, yet with all the humility at my disposal, that President Nelson Mandela was most impressed with all that I accomplished at that critical period of the emergence of a new South Africa. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Lawyers for Human Rights, under the directorship of Anne Skeleton, was equally impressed. Two years after those landmark elections, the African National Congress (ANC), nominated me for local city council elections in the central ward of my city. I consider myself extremely and uncommonly fortunate to have had the rare privilege of working at such close quarters with this great leader. Nelson Mandela worked from a place of the rare combination of unimpeachable integrity and unassailable truth, both of which are principles I have always resonated with.
By virtue of my short stint in formal politics, I developed an expansive network of associates amongst leaders in the rural areas of South Africa. I served the rural communities by providing over 100,000 meals to them. After this exhilarating excursion in politics, I shifted gear into the formal legal sector gaining experience in Family & Divorce Family Law, Commercial Law, Insolvency Law, Criminal and Civil
Litigation, as well as Conveyancing. I have achieved nothing short of roaring success with my conveyancing law firm, YMi (Yugandrie Maharaj Incorporated). As a South African attorney, I have been able to meritoriously attain the highest designation in legal practice; one that is only earned by less than 1% of female attorneys in the entire country.
A Journey Like No Other
My purpose now is to embrace a life mission in which I am irrevocably committed to helping empower South Africans who find themselves in similar circumstances through building initiatives such as International Association of Human Values, Saree for Change and Life For A Purpose. I have partnered with local municipalities to transform communities by awakening the spirituality of the people, so that they can tap into their deep reserves of potential, exploit their innate gifts and talents, and develop their entrepreneurial skills.
Along my own journey I have taken two proactive steps. The first step was to decisively come out of my comfort zone. There is a self-imposed prison called ‘Comfort Zone.’ where, not only is the average individual the prisoner, but he is also the jailer, for the simple reason that he is in possession of the key to a freedom he is surprisingly unwilling to pursue. The second step I have taken in my life, and which I still consistently take, is to insinuate myself into a gap as soon as I see one. I like to shake things up.
A Woman of Incomparable Influence
I am an internationally certified John Maxwell Leadership Coach, a Doctor of Humane Letters, an Ambassador for the Trinity International University of Ambassadors, a global Ambassador for the Women of Wealth Magazine and a director of the Global Women Empowerment Organization. As a transformational coach, I have shared the stage with influential speakers like Tony Robbins, T. Ecker and J.T Foxx and have also attended many prestigious international events with Coach Nido Quebin. I have won prestigious awards for philanthropy, and for my role as an Ambassador for African economic empowerment. I am a recipient of a Presidential Award of Service from the President of The United States and have been honored with a Resolution from The State of Georgia. The South African Sunday Tribune Newspaper honored me as a South African Hero.
I have succeeded in building a strong personal brand that has empowerment and transformation as its key drivers and that passion has found expression in my seminar series, “7 Steps To Becoming A Superhero; otherwise called 7 Steps To Self-Mastery.”
Enter The Wealth Elevation Academy
I am fortunate to join the faculty at the prestigious Wealth Elevation Academy, with its eminent array of distinguished and accomplished experts. The Academy was founded

She is also an Icon of the Fourth Estate as CEO & Publisher of Women of Wealth Magazine. Boasting an expansive, all-embracing, cross-disciplinary and thoroughly inclusive curriculum, WEA aims to teach you how to start a business on your own terms, grow it into a multimillion-dollar empire, and live the life of your dreams.
I will be facilitating a course called, “How To Grow And Expand Your Business Into Global Markets.” This course provides participants with the tools and knowledge that will empower them to propel their businesses into the global arena. I intend to employ my expertise in business and commercial law to help South African women business owners, and black-owned small businesses, to position their companies globally. I want to encourage them to step out of their own comfort zones and become disruptors.
Conclusion
Right from my youth, I have developed a capacity for refusing to play it safe. The common denominator amongst the generality is the tendency to play it safe. Most people are either willing only to, at the best, play in familiar territory, or at the worst, maintain fidelity to the evil that they know, or can see. Yet, beyond this crippling comfort zone often lies the field of infinite possibilities in which may ultimately be found potentials for advancement on a scale that most people cannot even begin to imagine. They are unwilling to trade what they can see for what they cannot see, in total ignorance of the fact that the greatest of life’s dividends often lie hidden in treasure troves that have remained unexplored for centuries.
May the ultimate sacrifice of the Son of Man; Him who is also known as the Prince of Peace, infuse your life with the inspiration, and the new hope, to continue to follow the path of courage, truth and redemption all the days of your life. Amen.

Dr. Almas Jiwani UNLEASH THE POWER WITHIN
Almas Jiwani when asked what her favorite motto to inspire women, she was not at a loss for words. In fact, the question should perhaps be - what are her favorite mottos, because actually two come to mind. The first one being: “Values are the principal th ing. Value yourself, be yourself – value your good values.” Just to explain values a bit further, what Almas mean is to operate with love, ethics and compassion. These three components should pervade every aspect of one’s life. Being generous, Standing up for what is right, raising good children, educating and nourishing them, keep them in good health, helping the poor, the elderly and the sick, and loving one’s self. Be your authentic self. Almas believes one should always determine to be a dispenser of love and goodwill and do not necessarily dance to the rhythm created by others.
The second motto is “We all possess power within that is simply waiting to be unleashed and women should recognize this inside themselves.”This motto is even truer when one speak about what must be done for gender equality in the world. This question seems to be never ended and won’t be until equality is met. Almas sees the issue of gender parity is primarily a human rights issue. If we delve deep into the subject, we will discover that the primary problem is that women are not considered as human as men. She believes that empowering women is the fundamental step that must be taken first in tackling this issue of gender equality.
Values are the principal thing. Value yourself, be yourself — value your good values.
The factors to consider are economic, political and cultural. With regard to cultural norms and policies for instance, it is imperative to sift through the underlying values governing various cultures and make a distinction between the values that are progressive and those that are retrogressive. The idea is to create a level playing field for all genders so we must determine which values favor that. Almas also completely endorse the idea of having women all over the world coming together in international women’s forums where you have policy-makers such as academics, governments, nongovernmental organizations, corporations and supranational organizations, all voicing their expertise in bridging gaps in equality. But one, has to start someone where and that start is usually with leadership.
Over the years we have seen how women make great leaders. We all can name at least one woman that comes to mind. Though women can be more vocal, especially those within public service, the better. So why don’t we see more women in position over power? Again, the environments these women are operating in have to be also developing in a corresponding manner so that their voices may have even more legitimacy. However, women leaders should address all problems in their communities and not just problems related to women, because that would result in confining their outlook and growth.
The number of women leaders we currently have is not enough. But there is progress both in politics and business about the number of female leaders and managers. For total social justice in the world, each nationality, each
gender or each belief must have a voice in political arena. What do you think about it? In this context, we must first identify and define ‘justice’. What is just? Anyone can have a strong voice but do their ideals center on the public good and consensus building? Are they based on human rights, economic development and protection of the individual? If a certain belief is going to stand in the way of progress, progress towards equality for all, then these beliefs have to be re-evaluated. This is where conferences become important cornerstones for identifying what is interfering with progress and in turn identifying consensus-based policies for the future.
Besides gender equality, the differences between men and women are also important when we think about the place of women in business life. For example, women raise children and cannot often find flexible jobs that are suitable for their life. Sometimes working 6 days per week wear out women because of their family life. Business life is intolerant and in many countries government don’t find enough resolutions. What can be done for this situation? What Almas Jiwani has just accurately described are severely patriarchal arrangements in societies of male dominance and historical power relations within the family where women have always been considered weaker and subordinate. The woman’s place in this scenario is at home. This kind of patriarchal thinking has been carried forward into organizational policies and is very restrictive for women. Women cannot be held hostage to complex social arrangements that perpetuate unproductive and rigid traditions.
Almas is all for the promotion of women’s rights movements against residual patriarchal thinking. This is another reason why she also encourages women to improve their skill sets in our current fast-paced and competitive market to ensure their relevance and meaningful contribution at all levels of society. We should be mindful not to be rigid and let women in. Imagine the developmental progress a society makes when a hundred percent of its adult population is being productive in one way or another. Women have a lot to contribute to any society. Besides, it is also crucial for every individual, man or woman to realize that performing household tasks and raising children are extremely significant and productive jobs. The single most significant step towards gender parity would be eliminating the mindset that these jobs are less important only because more women than men are doing them. This and given the immense progress in this era of unprecedented globalization, one of the biggest problems that women face is being marginalized and left behind in the development curve. Women in so many countries are still oblivious to the potential and capacity that they carry as they find themselves trapped in rigid traditional societies that stifle their potential and leave them underperforming.
In addition, women raise men and women continue in many ways violence against women by giving education to their sons. Another perpetual patriarchal structure we are all complicit in the never-ending traditionally unequal way of organizing societies. Almas says the only way to reverse the trend is to pull all the plugs out on education. We need to keep sounding the necessity to “educate, educate and educate”… educate all parties, those in authority but particularly even women should be made to understand that patriarchy has to be stopped. Women have to shift their self-perception so they can be mentally liberated because as long as nothing changes
in the way they think, nothing around them will ever change. Education is definitely our major weapon but this education will span on several levels. Therefore, Almas is committed to working with governments to facilitate the creation of policies and laws that will lay out the necessary groundwork across all spheres within the army, within industries and business at all levels.
Per UN’s Violence Against Women Act; “Any act of genderbased violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” There are several variables that come into play that can be attributed to the reasons for violence against women. However, the underlying reason lies in Value Perception. Naturally, we treat with respect what we deem to have value. For instant, even with the innate objects around us that were expensive to acquire, we treat with respect because we appreciate the value of those objects. Unfortunately, from time immemorial, the perception of the value of women has been tampered with –through beliefs, religion, customs and traditions .Women have been, more or less considered a necessary evil that humanity has to put up with for the sake of progeny. They have been and continue to be viewed as sex-objects and are therefore treated as such, with the end result most often being violence. Women’s human rights are consistently violated by inequities based on political or religious agendas, such as laws that are biased by patriarchal forces in society. Social justice can only be realized when women are not having to face discriminatory policies. These kinds of policies attack the value of women. But it does not stop there. Violence due to unequal power relations is perpetual and a worldwide problem.
My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style.
~ Maya Angelou
AN UNAPOLOGETIC LIFE OF RESILIENCE
By Michelle Mras
The Maya Angelou quote above is my mantra for the current segment of my life. Over the past seven years, I have experienced several personal challenges which have caused me to revaluate how I participated in life prior and to create a plan to how I vow to live every day thereafter. I am a strong believer that God prepares us for all challenges in our lives. We are unknowing students as we learn lessons long before the lesson will be applicable.
In 2014, I was in an auto accident that caused a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). I was trapped within my mind unable to speak more than a few singular words or walk without assistance for over 2-years. The hiatus I was forced to take allowed me immense amounts of time to examine the choices I’ve made throughout my life.
My “Ah-ha” moment came as a vision of my seven-year-old self jumping over concrete storm ditch on a bicycle. I promised myself, the universe and especially God that if I was permitted to speak and walk without assistance again, I would live with the courage of that seven-year-old. I would dare to push through my insecurities, live a life of joy despite my fears and to share my lessons with others so they too will stop apologizing for what they aren’t.
Within months of gaining my ability to speak and walk again, two things occurred in rapid sequence: 1) I was invited to share a TEDx Talk. This was a huge blessing and accomplishment for someone with a 16 second memory caused by my traumatic brain injury, and 2) I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. This time, I didn’t lose myself. I had already been stretched further than I thought I was capable, yet here I was facing another battle.
I reflected on all the stories I remembered while trapped in my head. I had mapped thousands of scenarios to the question, “What would I do if….” One of those scenarios was, “What would I do if I was diagnosed with cancer?” When the doctors asked me what my choices were for each step through my cancer process, I was always ready with an answer.
Once on the dual journey of Traumatic Brain Injury paired with Breast cancer, I asked my neurologist and oncologist what would increase my chances of healing and survival. They both responded with the facts that I needed to feed and care for my body properly, stay hydrated and drop a minimum of 80 pounds. My goal was to survive, so I began doing everything I could to create healthy habits all around. First, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Then every six months afterward, I went under the knife to remove or mend some other internal body part. Throughout, I remained consistent with my healthy habits with the assistance of my husband of 20+ years and my children. Over the course of about three years, I shed approximately 240 pounds off my 5-foot frame. People noticed the weight loss, but what wasn’t as apparent was the mental shift which occurred within me. My ability to accomplish what I did was because for the first time in my life, I truly believed I was worthy of accomplishing anything I set my mind to. Looking back at the first 47 years of my life, I managed to sabotage every advancement in my life. My self-esteem always managed to get in my way. How about you? What gets in your way? If you have answered, “myself” I suggest it’s time to step aside and believe in yourself.
The power behind resiliency is to understand that there is always a way to move. You must choose to get up, keep moving forward and find your own way. My mentor, Dr. Paul Scheele of Scheele Learning Systems, once told me that if children approached challenges with the mindset of an adult, we would be a world of crawlers. Children are naturally
resilient. When learning to walk, an infant will pull up, fall, pull up, fall, etc. They keep trying until they perfect the ability to stand, then they begin practicing their first steps. Imagine a world where we all kept getting up when challenges are presented. Even after the bruises, we still take the next steps. Embrace your toddler mindset. Be the naturally resilient person you were built to be.
The knowledge I garnered through losing my ability to use my mind and body has propelled me to complete the healing of my spirit. This learning journey of massive change has guided me to realize that there is a harmony to be reached among: Mind, Body and Soul. Missing one of the three elements leads to false summits of accomplishment. We each need all three to maintain our accomplishments. Another key to resilience is to have compassion for yourself. We all fall and fail sometime. We make mistakes. We are human. Demeaning yourself for errors that you never plan to repeat is a punishment you do not deserve. Allow yourself grace. You may have changed, but you are a better version of yourself from enduring the experience.
“Change is not easy. It’s not rainbows and butterflies in a field of daisies. Maneuvering through the challenges is what reveals who you really are. The beauty is in the possibilities.” - Dr. Michelle Mras
Part of my mission as an Executive Speaking Coach is to guide others to rediscover their inner child that believes in miracles, dreams, and most of all… themselves. I accomplish this through sharing stories in my books, inspiring from stages with keynote talks, private and group coaching, and singing. My livestreamTV show, Mental Shift on The New Channel (TNC), Philippines, is where I interview influencers about the epiphanies that shifted the course of their lives. A more recent business venture has been my involvement with creating storylines for upcoming authors with Perfect Publishing.
The CEO of Perfect Publishing, Dr. Ken Rochon aka Dr. Smiley, has joined forces with me in a venture we call Amplifluence, where we amplify the voices of coaches, authors and influencers from across the nation to highlight them as influencers to know. In everything I am involved with, I understand that my purpose is to inspire others to reach for their dreams regardless of how terrifying or how obscure it may seem. A short five years ago, I was learning to walk on my own and setting up safeties for when my brain would short out and stop working for days at a time. I was also creating new habits to keep my body healthy in order to battle breast cancer. Despite the challenges, I have evolved into a woman I could barely imagine existing within me. Perhaps my biggest blessing is that my brain damage made it difficult for me to remember who I used to be. Because I didn’t have a clear memory of who I was, I started with a clean slate and uninhibited.
My wish for all who read this article, watch me on stage, read my books or catch one of my SciFi movies, is to stop limiting yourself. Allow the younger version of you to come out and play every once in a while. Throughout my health journey, I have learned that many of us drive through life with the safety brake engaged. We have no idea how well we can navigate because we are always holding back on our dreams. Don’t hold back. Take steps toward what makes your heart soar. The worst that can happen is you end up where you already are. The best is you get what you want. So, stop apologizing for what you aren’t and be the best version of yourself every day. Be Unapologetically you!

with Dr. Reneé Starlynn Allen HEART-TO-HEART
Meet Dr. Reneé Starlynn Allen, a celebrity emcee and former host of the dynamic podcast Renee Allen & Friends Show. She is also known as The People’s Emcee, Radio & TV Host, Advocate for Women, Families & Human Decency. Dr. Allen is the Founder & C.E.O. of Global Conscious Initiative (GCI) and launched the DMV 48 Men of Power during the pandemic to highlight men of color who have accomplished phenomenal deeds in this earth and community. Dr. Reneé has been a symbol of inspiration for so many in the entertainment industry and beyond.
Growing up in Fairfield, Connecticut, with two younger sisters, Lisa & Sonya, Reneé had to take on a great deal of responsibility at a young age. She was always a force to be reckoned with throughout her academic life; whether it was becoming the first black female all-school Congress President of her High School or winning tournaments in volleyball, Reneé has worked her way towards the top of the success ladder. Transparency.
When asked about the women who inspired her, this is what Reneé had to say:
“I’ll start with my family because my Grandma Connie [late], my mother’s mother, she’s just the epitome of what a grandma should be. I mean, she was there for everything! She Inspired my two sisters and I, immensely. My Aunt Pookie (late) was another one who was always there for us, too. She did not skip a beat and I remember that she gave me my deposit on my first home in 1984. She was extraordinarily supportive, and I miss them both dearly. I owe everything that I am to Charlotte Fraser, my mother, and Leith Douglas Fraser, my dad. She gave you just enough rope to let you have some fun while keeping you protected and safe. And I just can’t repay her enough, and I try to do everything I can for her daily.”
My Mom & Dad (late) are/was one in a zillion and was responsible for assisting many people in our family as well as several of her friends who lived in our home temporarily. They were always looking out for us, our extended family, friends as well as the community.”
With the opportunity to meet the great Oprah just at the start of her career, Reneé already knew she was born to serve a bigger purpose.
“It was a fundraiser for $1 million to pay off a building downtown, for I believe the National Council for Negro Women, and I met Oprah at that time. She has just completed an interview with Forbes Magazine. She has always been someone that I respected and was proud of; I only wish that I would have given her my card at the time.” She is a living testimony of perseverance.
After successfully running the Reneé Allen & Friends Show for over twelve years, years, Reneé took time to spend time with her family, and , tended to a family crisis and caregiving. Now, she is proud to help launch her son, Chase Joseph’s, first book Chase Your Dreams, A Youthful Guide To Riding The Waves Of Life Through Poetry as well as her first anthology The J Word which is a #1 best seller on Amazon. Praise GOD!
Dr. Reneé has had various mentors throughout her life who helped her excel and grow in her career and pushed her to never give up on her dreams.
“I have been extremely blessed with many extraordinary experiences where I have received priceless advice from amazing human-beings throughout my life!” Of course, my mother, Charlotte Fraser (my shero), has been the ultimate mentor and role model to me. My father, Leith Fraser (my hero), who was my first male mentor and the first man I ever loved; spoiled me and molded me. Charles Overton, Scott, C.S.O. insurance became a mentor of mine, taught me so much, not just about insurance, but just life skills and how to be the greatest salesman in the world. I really learned a lot from him. Darnell Self and his wife, Traci, have been excellent friends to me since 2000. When I met Marcia Dyson, we became remarkably close; so much so that she was my keynote speaker at my retirement from the government. She and I met through a mutual acquaintance, and I fell in agape love with her and shortly thereafter, brought her to my first women’s event in D.C. where many of the women in my front & second rows had the opportunity
to meet her and eventually develop friendships. I love to connect with people. I am not selfish and believe that it’s our duty on earth to connect people and support their dreams so that they will experience trajectory in their passion & purpose. I cannot forget about Dr. Lance London. I have known him for over 37+ years and he has been a haven of loyalty and friendship, unwavering. Marcella Barnes who since our military days have been as close as Siamese twins (lol). Roger Gore, whom I’ve know and who has been my brother from another mother for over three decades. Ozzy Ramos, my Puerto Rican brother friend, Bishop G.E, Holmes who has prayed over me for decades and has been my peace many times on
the battle ground of life, to name a few. I am blessed to have a huge amount of support in my life and for that I am grateful!
Life is a beautiful thing! Despite life challenges, including the biggest monster, cancer, I am living life to the fullest until the wheels fall off! These days I am grateful to be alive, to be able to spend quality time with the people that I care about, to be able to pick & choose projects that bring value to my life and others, and to be able to LOVE despite any circumstance because your mindset with agape love will get you through anything in life! I am a living testimony!

She then attended Virginia Commonwealth University and received her first degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and then her Medical Degree. She has been a member of several medical societies and she is a recent member of the International Peptide Society. She enjoys giving back and volunteering. She also enjoys helping women of all ages feel better on the inside as well as the outside and that is how EVIN SKINCARE Rx was created.
EVIN SKINCARE Rx wants you to allow your inner beauty to shine through. The glow of healthy skin will allow you to put your best face forward. Our products are made with organic ingredients along with additional clinically proven ingredients. Together this combination provides exfoliation, hydration, skin brightening and wrinkle reduction. You will truly experience a more even skin tone with daily use. All products are paraben-free, sulfate-free, vegan and cruelty free. We were extremely excited to see an African American Doctor take a dive into skin care. Evin Skincare introduces a way to bring out the beauty of the black skin tone. As well as other types of skin tone.
My three top habits, I can say for myself, that has contributed to my success thus far would have to be Prayer, Persistence and Consistency.
With so many skincare products on the market, what inspired EVIN SKINCARE Rx and its uniqueness?
I enjoy taking care of my patients and take time to establish a relationship. With that comes trust in multiple ways and on various levels. I get asked my opinion on decisions such as do you think I should have surgery to what skincare products I would recommend. With that, I realized that some women
were overwhelmed with skin care choices and weren’t choosing any skin care products at all. They did not have a routine but had skin concerns such as dark under eye circles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. They also had the need for a good facial cleanser. I wanted to make it easy for most looking for a simple regimen to address those needs and EVIN SKINCARE Rx was created.
What products are included in your skincare line?
Our product line includes the following:
• The Trio is made up of the essentials needed in a skincare regimen. That includes a facial cleanser, a moisturizing eye serum and a moisturizing facial serum.
• Wash Away The Day Facial Gel-is a gentle cleanser for most skin types. Our beauties see a difference in their skin quickly.
• Eye Uplift Eye Serum-is a moisturizing serum that helps reduce fine lines, puffiness and under eye dark circles.
• Be The Light Facial Serum-is also a moisturizing serum and contains ingredients that decreases fine lines, stimulates collagen production, and helps with hyperpigmentation.
What is your bestselling product?
The Trio by far. Our beauties comment that they enjoy and see the best benefits when the products are used together day and/or night.
What separates you from your competition?
We try to keep your routine simple but effective with clinically proven ingredients. We would like to start a minimalist movement because sometimes less is more when it comes to skin care. We can be our own worst enemy by overloading our skin with too many harsh ingredients.
In your opinion, what makes you the next trailblazer in the skincare world?
What makes me a Trailblazer, that’s a good question. I would like to become your skincare beastie helping you to navigate the skincare world with more ease. We will continue to bring you quality products that take care of your skin.
I’m sure you have women approach you all the time
with how your services were life changing for them. How does it feel to know that you have a hand in creating positive mental health, body image and self-esteem for so many women?
This is part of the inspiration for starting EVIN. I want to remind people that it is not selfish or only a luxury for a few to take care of themselves. It is important to take care of your skin, which is your largest organ. Skin care is self-care as well as healthcare. We have even selected our product names to inspire you with each use. Our mantra is… “I get up, WASH AWAY THE DAY and BE THE LIGHT because EYE UPLIFT!” My goal daily is to let my light shine and if that helps or lifts at least one soul I feel blessed. We all have the power to be the light.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being an entrepreneur?
In my day-to-day world of practicing medicine, I operate in a very masculine environment. With EVIN I allow my feminine energy to lead me to operate in a more creative and intuitive manner. We are in a remarkably interesting time of opportunity. There are opportunities to create and build like never before, especially for female entrepreneurs.
What are your three top habits you feel contributes to your success?
damage due to free radicals. Vitamin C also helps to boost collagen production. Healthy fats like omega-3 are natural moisturizers and are anti-inflammatory. Finally, zinc supports oil production and repairs skin damage. These vitamins and nutrients represent a small sample of what is needed to keep our skin healthy, happy, and glowing.
As a minority entrepreneur, let’s talk more about legacy and building wealth. What is wealth to you?
Wealth to me is multifaceted. It is composed of having the financial means to live the life you choose to live. It also allows you the time to enjoy the life you want to create. Finally, having good health, being present and feeling your best is wealthy.
My three top habits, I can say for myself, that has contributed to my success thus far would have to be Prayer, Persistence and Consistency.
At what age should one begin a good skincare routine and why?
You can start as early as the tween-teen years with sunscreen, a gentle cleanser and moisturizer only. As hormonal changes occur, an anti-acne regimen may need to be added. For anti-aging concerns it is important to start in your late 20’s to early 30’s. The earlier the better as signs of aging can start around this time.
That is good advice. Oftentimes, women wait until their later years to adopt a healthy routine, let alone pay attention and give their skincare that attention it deserves. Tell us what role does diet play in healthy skin and why?
Our genetics plays a role in our aging process. Diet is no doubt second. What we consume daily such as water for hydration, to eating nutrient dense foods, to also avoiding the habits that can accelerate aging, it is all important. It is important to consume foods that contain selenium and vitamin C and E, which are antioxidants to help repair skin
Interesting points. Many people contribute wealth to money and that’s not always the case. Tell us more about your legacy. What do you want your legacy to be and why?
For my children and family, I hope to be a role model of service. I hope to leave a legacy of service to others behind. I serve daily to help lead my community to a healthier lifestyle and better health.
What is next for EVIN SKINCARE Rx?
We have always been focused on taking care of the inside as well as the outside. We plan to continue that focus.
Tell us about the life of an African American Physician.
As an African American physician, I have chosen to practice medicine in our community. The practice has a long-standing history of providing care to our community for over 100 years. There are still disparities in healthcare and mistrust still exist, but I do my part to bridge the gap. One way to improve the relationship between African American patients and the healthcare system is to increase the amount of physicians that look like them. Currently African American physicians make up only about 5% of practicing physicians. Our communities are also still dealing with food disparity, crime, poverty, and school conditions that exacerbate poor health. This needs to change because when one community suffers, we all suffer.
