101 WAYS TO PLAY on the Central Coast

DON’T BE SIDELINED THIS SUMMER t’s summertime; what’s your pleasure? The central coast has no shortage of fun, outdoor activities this time of year. From surfing the waves, bocce ball at a local vineyard, frisbee on the beach, or running your first 5K. Are you able to do what you want to do? Or do you have to wait on the sidelines, while your family and friends have fun? How you feel influences your ability to participate in the vast array of sports and recreational activities that our area has to offer. At Spirit Winds Physical Therapy, we specialize in the mechanics of your

I

body. Misalignment of a joint, muscular imbalances and lack of flexibility are all sources of pain that may prohibit you from participation in your favorite activity. Back pain is a common ailment that can sideline the most active of athletes. A FREE consultation at Spirit Winds Physical Therapy can properly assess the many structures of your body that influence your ability to move. Often times sources of pain may not be where the pain presents. So if you have been stretching your back and getting no

relief, it is possible that a misalignment in your foot or even a tight muscle in your hip is causing your pain. Once sources of your pain are identified, treatment focuses on three target areas: 1. Optimize

your alignment through use of manual therapy. Use of the therapist’s hands is an effective tool to gently manipulate and encourage structural alignment.

sequence. Often this sequence is off when you are injured. 3. Identify

and make lifestyle changes to avoid reinforcing bad patterns. Learning how to move your body in the right way to excel.

The sky is the limit this summer when it comes to fun on the coast! Don’t let aches and pains prevent you from participating. Ask Spirit Winds how we can help you achieve your highest potential. l

101 WAYS TO PLAY on the Central Coast

READING ALOUD TO CHILDREN

new trend in education is arising here on the Central Coast, a resurgence of a practice that through the centuries has proven to provide children a well-rounded, experienceladen, and vocabulary-rich foundation from which to soar. Reading aloud. Yep, reading aloud is magical. Multiple studies have shown that reading aloud to children is superior to bouts of tutoring, batteries of assessments, and fortunes spent on extra help. The beauty of this trend is that it is available to anyone—and it is free. Reading aloud to your child—beginning as young as in-utero—has proven to

lead to greater success in school, more inherent interest in independent reading, better writing skills, and increased ability to understand and sympathize with others in different circumstances. Children entering kindergarten who benefit from parents reading aloud have larger vocabularies that give them an advantage over their peers. When their parents continue to read to them through grammar and middle school, the advantages are even greater. (For more on this topic, see The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease.) In addition to its academic and social benefits, reading aloud to your children

is a precious gift: the gift of time together. Reading aloud slows the hands of the clock in a most appreciable way. Sharing reading time— brushing back stray curls as you read to your little one, enjoying your child watching you as you imagine together—creates new bonds and common references. Reading aloud knits lives together. I remember reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to my two 12-year-old girls. It was a Sunday morning and we were curled up on the couch, each girl with a drawing pad on her lap. The sound of their pencils sketching accompanied the beautiful language of the classic book. We were right

there with Professor Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned Land, descending through the leagues that Jules Verne had laid before us over a century ago. It wasn’t until trembling fingers touched the steely surface of the cold beast that we realized the monster we had been searching for was neither a giant squid nor whale but a submarine. I smiled at my girls’ astonishment. I smiled because I had managed to freeze time for at least a little while. spearheaded by Strachan, Stewardship Travel offers visitors to WineCoastCountry more than 70 carefully created activities and attractions to choose from. What makes this program different from, others is the fact that all these activities and adventures are linked with contribution and learning opportunities, ensuring travelers will connect with locals, nature and heritage while on vacation. The opportunities are as diverse as the visitors’ interests, such as enjoying free wine tasting with a heritage tour, engaging in citizen science near Hearst Castle, protecting coastal habitats with restoration trail days, planting seedlings in an Audubon preserve, enjoying naturalist-lead preservation hikes on a historical California ranch, participating in wildlife education and clean-up kayak tours, enjoying a California coastal light house preservation tour and a railroad history restoration day, joining in a farm to fork chef-led farmers market tour and estate lunch, and much more. ship Traveler vintner, fine dining and a donation to the Pacific Wildlife Care Foundation. casional golf round with his Dad as well as spending time at the beach looking for sasess. Jac is in the active military, based in Germany and serving in the Medical field. He spends his down time playing semi-pro slow pitch softball for a world ranked organization. Nic has found it important to give back to those that he encounters in his daily walk in society. “I have been blessed to have been given opportunity to succeed in life and have devoted myself to giving to those that need, or those that are less fortunate. The cage is definitely a highlight in my life because of the positive results that I see in the people that I/we happen to meet. The most important thing in my life that has shaped me to the person that I am today is having a child. Hav-

ing a child young and being able to live, work, and provide for him to the extent that I have now and will continue to do is what inspires me to continue to grow and perfect everything that I am associated with.” Stated De Angelis. Nic and his team wanted to provide a facility for kids, adults, and parents to come to in order to hang out and improve their core skills, as well as provide a place for everyone to enjoy and get fired up about. This facility is not the average hitting/ training facility that you usually see elsewhere, it is a facility built on friendships, family and providing a welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy and be a part of. The Show is one of many more to come in the county as Nic plans to expand at the end of this year and beginning of next year. l
